Great security and quick to lock up. Heavy as hell, but you didn’t buy a

With the pitlocks and a Kryptonite u-lock, you can put a mount on your bike
for carrying the u-lock and you don't have to worry about chains and
cables. The weight is integrated into your frame, kinda. It's also really
ugly.
There's another lock/chain combo called the Hiplok - the chain integrates a
plastic clip so that you can wear the chain/padlock combo as a belt. It's
not uncomfortable for me. But it's heavy. I bring it sometimes when I don't
know what the lockable situation will be, or as an extra lock when we're
biking as a family.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-23 Thread Thomas Blak
I use Pitlocks on my Sam and my wife's Betty Foy for both wheels and the
seat post. Each bike is then locked with 2 New York Fahgettaboudits,
supplemented with a Krypto cable and Kryptonite Evolution. So three U locks
per bike. Then they are placed in a bike locker in my condo building with
another Kryptonite mini locking the door plus a Master padlock.

Yes, it seems like overkill to many but you chose the locks to the amount
of risk. If someone gets into my locker they are isolated and have plenty
of time to attack the locks. This way I make that as difficult as possible.

My wife's bike that she keeps in Japan is locked with some cheap Dutch lock
that would take nothing to open. The risk is low, therefore no need for U
locks etc.

When I commuted to work I left three Kryptonites at work so I wouldn't have
to carry them back and forth.

For the Bromptons, they stay inside our unit but when traveling we use ABUS
Bordo 6500 locks. They are easier to carry on the Bromptons, but I have
less confidence they can hold up as well.

Again it is all about risk and minimizing that risk. In Toronto, the risk
is high, in Japan the risk is low and I lock accordingly.

[RBW] Re: King's Crown on Easter Morn

2019-04-23 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, Nick. It's an iPhone and Gorillapod and CameraPro app for the
timer/burst shot set up.

My other bikes being fixed, I obviously stand to climb a lot more, but learned
that is a tricky proposition on steep climbs (which of course is where it is
most needed) because it unweights the rear wheel). So I learned to sit until I
needed to stand, and then, if possible, just stand enough to get the aid of the
weight while keeping some on the rear wheel. That's with gear inches of 40-57"
on singletrack. With Boot, however, it's "Wow. Did I really just ride that
section I and most everyone I see or ride with usually have to walk?" Boots
flattens mountains. Grin.

I actually looked at this post last night and it ended up spiraling into
about 40 min checking out your page. Really great stuff on there. I too
prefer seated climbing most of the time.only really like to stand up
and mash them when I'm getting competitive with somebody and I don't do
much of that anymore. The thing I was most struck by on your post however
(besides the obviously great performance of the bike) was the photography!
Lots of great action shots that really made the Riv Shine out there in the

method) or do you bring a cameraman/woman with you on these little outings?

Ed, I got the first large demo GBW. 90pbh. 66 QB, 62 Hunqabeam. Both of those
are up-sized and I really love how they ride, though I use a 5cm stem on them.
My 90pbh is dead center of what was recommended for this GBW (not sure how the
production run will compare), so this was a first for me. I love it. Could I
ride the xl and get 29+ instead of 27.5+? Doubtless. Still, this bike fits like

Re: [RBW] Re: utility biking shop in SF east bay?

2019-04-23 Thread Randy Franks
Don't give up on the Clem L!

My Pleasanton-based mother had a step thru Trek hybird that she was excited
to get (moderate price point, good local shop), but ended up riding only
begrudgingly after a couple years. Even with tune-ups and different tires,
it just didn't "roll very well" in her words.

Anyway, she has a green Clem L now (fenders, big Wald basket on the front)
and cannot get enough of it. "This bike just...goes...when I pedal it" is
how she puts it. Come to think of it, that's probably the best compliment
you could ever come up with for a bike.

Re: [RBW] What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

Almost the same as Shoji - pitlocks on wheels and seat post - but with a
black and yellow "Fuhgeddaboutit" Kryptonite lock. Here in NYC it can be a
challenge to find something small enough to work with the frame or back
wheel and the Krypto Mini. I also put a cover over the saddle.

Re: [RBW] What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-23 Thread Patrick Moore
I made a lock from about 3' of towing chain from the hardware store, held
by an Abus padlock. I leave this attached to the bike rack at a local
Sprout's some 5-6 miles away. It's a reasonably cheap and I suspect and
certainly hope reasonably secure system.

When the clerk cut my length of chain, he started with an angle grinder and
finished up with a hacksaw; at any rate, a bolt cutter would not work, and
using the 2 cutting tools took him 10 or 15 minutes to get through a single
link.

Does anyone know anything about towing chain? Googling calls up scuttlebutt
that it's quite hard to cut. But I haven't heard of anyone else, at least
on my lists, using this stuff.

I cover it with a section of old MTB tube.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-23 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi,
I like Kryptonite Mini U-lock with pitlocks securing wheels and seatpost.

I find Mini U is fast locking and removal with favorable weight/security.
With reasonable places to lock, it's also likely to hold the bike upright.
Larger U-locks might be easier to find locking locations, but the larger
size is heavier, easier to defeat in leverage attacks, and bike is more
likely to twist and fall.

I have Abus folding locks-- work ok, but the folding mechanism is not as
convenient as I thought. (Rivets prevent rotation in third dimension,
limiting its ability to wrap around some objects.) Also much slower to lock
and remove compared to U-locks.

I also have various cable locks. Those work fine, but Mini-U is probably
viewed by thieves as more difficult to defeat.

I am intrigued by TIGR locks. It would be lighter than Mini-U, and design
seems to-be similar use scenario as Mini-U.

(BTW: I really like how Pitlocks removed my worry about wheels being
stolen. This means that Mini-U can be used to secure only the bike frame if
I can't find an appropriate pole to Sheldon Brown lock method.
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html)

Good luck!

[RBW] What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

I just found out the Kryptonite lock with a barrel key is easy for thieves

What locks do you like and why?

[RBW] Charity auction Riv-ish bike

2019-04-23 Thread Tom Allingham
Hi, all,

First, thanks for all the interest in round one of my bags for sale. I'm
hoping all buyers have their bags now -- if not, please email me on
talli...@yahoo.com

Second, more bags, parts and bikes to come -- I'm being forcefully reminded
that domestic downsizing actually means DOWN sizing!

And third, I thought that the attached pics might be of interest to some in
the group. I was asked to do one last bike build for my daughter's former
school's charity auction, and I wanted to cobble it together without buying
anything new. This is built from what was originally a Sears "Ted
Williams" road bike frame/fork, made by Puch (from Austria) from, I
believe, all Reynolds 531. It's a very nice frame. I had it repainted,
and slapped on some Resurrectio decals from Riv. Also used some Bosco
handlebars from Riv. The rest of the build is catch as catch can -- Phil
Wood single speed wheels, Dia-Compe calipers, Tektro levers, an old track
crank, Riv Sneaker pedals, Brooks leather grips and Cambium saddle, gold
Izumi chaim and gold cable housings, terra cotta Soma tires, and -- for a
pop of color -- red Paul Moon Unit cable hangers. And for a bit of whimsy,
a flask mounted on the saddle. It's quite fun to ride, but probably won't
fetch much at the auction. Here's a link to a few pics:

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Timeline

2019-04-23 Thread Tom Allingham
There were 10 Mystery Bikes built -- I don't know if that qualifies as a
custom or an actual photo-ish model. There were certainly a bunch of posts
on the Blog about those bikes, and they were instrumental in Grant's
thinking about long chain stays in many subsequent models. I could go find
the Blue posts if you want to include the Mystery Bikes on this sheet.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread John McBurney
One of the guys who used to work on my bikes was a bike mechanic in
Charleston had a customer who was an instructor in the Marine Recon School,
a small part of the Corps similar to the Navy Seals. A passionate cyclist,
he routinely carried a Glock even on the bike.

He was riding down a two lane road toward a bridge when a pickup carrying 3
good ol boys sped by and someone threw a beer at him. The marine flipped
them off and they pulled over, each coming toward him with a baseball bat.

It’s not a fair fight even if the marine is unarmed but..,

He backed them down at gunpoint, forced them to throw their bats in the
river and told them he didn’t ever want to see them on the road again.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hand-Cranked Coffee Grinder Recommendation

2019-04-23 Thread Sean McAtee
Thanks for your suggestions. It seems like the Porlex mini gets a lot of
love, as does the Hario. I'm going to ponder this a bit more before making
a final decision. I guess I am a bit torn trying to decide how compact of
a unit to purchase. The Porlex mini is small enough that I can easily
carry it on the bike. I've also been reading a bit about the Hario "Mini
Slim Pro" grinder. Several list members have mentioned the Hario Skerton,
but that model is larger than the other models that I have mentioned (so
not as easy to pack or carry on the bike) and it also has a glass bottom,
which may or may not be a concern.

I'm sure that any of the models that have been mentioned would meet my
needs. The struggle, as always, is making the decision about which model
would "best" meet my needs. I should write the model names on small pieces
of paper, place the papers inside a hat, close my eyes and pick the winner.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread David Bivins
I used to run a cheap go-pro wannabe on my front handlebars to document my
commute to/from work (downtown-ish Brooklyn to midtown Manhattan, NYC). I'd
take it home and edit it to the length of a piece of music of mine (45
minutes cut down to 5 or 6). Then I'd put it on a blog I used to have. It
was fun. The tripod mount on the camera got worn and it fell off my bike at
39th and Lex in Manhattan. I stopped safely and before I could run toward
it, a truck rolled over it, crushing it. REMARKABLY the USB i/o still
worked and the SD card was intact, so I was able to extract that fateful
ride :)

[RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread Lynn Haas
My absolutely favorite form of harassment is when I am yelled at for
blowing a stop sign that isn't there, usually at a 2-way stop. It's
happened a few times. Once it was a cop.

The simplest (definitely not the easiest) way to de-escalate is to ignore
them. If you are in danger, remember that you are on a bike and can get
away via places they can't go - U-turn on the sidewalk, over the grass,
behind another vehicle, etc. I sometimes pull out my phone and take
photos/video, in which case they can't shut up and zoom away fast enough.

I know more than a few cyclists, and drivers, running cameras, front and
rear, full time. I can't bring myself to that level of paranoia on my bike.
It kills all of the joy.

The Recyclery in San Rafael (a bit of a haul, I know) tends to have a fair
number of used commuter type bikes at reasonable prices. I am going to be
stopping by this afternoon and will let you know if I spot anything decent.

You might try California Pedaler in Danville - they always have used bikes
as they have a good trade-in policy.

The IGH might be tough to find on a used bike beyond a 3-speed.

This is great. I think we had similar self-defense teachers: "Get away, get
away, get away, get a weapon."
I used to respond to a buzz or a honk-and-buzz or an agro yeall with a

about as effective at changing their behavior, but it makes me feel calmer

[RBW] Re: utility biking shop in SF east bay?

2019-04-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
The shop I would recommend is Blue Heron Bikes in Berkeley. Blue Heron has
the Clem L, among other things. If her budget is like $300 though, I don't
know that she'll find anything there. She maybe should have a look at
Public Bikes to stay in the 400-600 range, but that's just direct online
purchasing.

[RBW] utility biking shop in SF east bay?

2019-04-23 Thread ted
Hey all,
I have a friend in the market for a new bike. She had an upright, step
through, fendered, chain cased, one speed, "mama-san" bike she bought in
Tokyo.
She wants a "lighter" bike with some gears. I think she's going to want 26"
wide tires, fenders, step through frame, upright bars, and rear derailur or
or 5 or 7 speed igh,
Though I think she would be well served by a Clem L I'm not sure she will
go for that price point (I think her old bike cost a few hundred $$ new).
Can anybody suggest a bike shop or two in the SF east bay (friend is in
Fremont, I'm in Pleasanton) that serves urban/suburban commuter type riders?

TIA

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-04-23 Thread lconley
Saddle sizing is mostly about perch bone (sit bone) width, just like frames
are mostly about PBH. The Rivet site has a procedure for measuring your sit
bone width. It is not a be-all end-all for determining the correct saddle,
but knowing your sit bone width is another tool in your arsenal. If you
have narrow sit bones a B17 is probably the correct seat even upright. I
ride a B68 with drops (mounted fairly high) and a B67, B71, or B73 upright
(I am heavy enough for the springs to be functional). But I also need a 54
cm frame with a 60 cm top tube (6' with an 83 PBH). It is the reason that I
have a pile of stems and handlebars for experimentation. Not easy if you
are on a budget.

[RBW] Opinions On Handlebar Selection

2019-04-23 Thread Johnny Alien
I am getting a 90's Schwinn High Plains that I am going to be upgrading. I
am not sure what handlebars to put on it. It will mainly be used for some
short commuting and trails rides. Nothing hardcore at all. I don't want
too upright so I am ruling out the Bosco. I am in the realm of the
Albatross, Billie or Choco. I also lean a bit toward a Bullmoose or
ChocoMoose to maybe keep some of the 90's MTB style. I will probably keep
the stock STI Rapid shifters on it until I figure out what thumb shifters I
might go to and whether I want to single speed it. So the albatross might
not work as well with those? Give me your opinions and thoughts. If anyone
has any of those bars that they are looking to unload feel free to hit me
up I would be interested.

[RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread lconley
Back in the 70's I used to ride with a friend who had been harassed by
someone with a gun once, so he started carrying a 9mm Smith and Wesson in
the holster strapped to the center of the handlebars, which was legal at
the time. No more harassment. Not my style, but it worked for him. We used
to ride the 120 miles between Gainesville and Daytona Beach on quarter
breaks. I was on my Paramount and he rode an aluminum Alan (glued lugs?) as
I recall.

[RBW] Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread Ryan M.
Best course of action would be to leave the area if a driver got more
aggressive than just yelling. You won’t prove anything to them by engaging and
it can only really go downhill.

I no longer ride on the roadways as I’ve noticed the last few years an
increasing hostility towards bike riders. The last bike ride I did on the road
a driver chucked a bottle at my back then swung into me. That was it for
me...not worth it. Mountain biking is more fun anyway.
