[RBW] Re: Quick introduction and Clem parts questions

2019-11-27 Thread Nerl L.
Hello All,
Thanks for all the helpful replies! I posted an earlier reply, with some
pics (of another bike), which is either still awaiting moderation, or got
lost.
Kai, I hope you are not in pain! I've been following your posts regarding
tubeless, I think I need to study up!
Dorothy, may I trouble you to refer that ebay wheel vendor to me?
Patrick, my Clem is shipping out next week. I'll be sure to keep you
updated. Pics of my 80's Dawes (alas, about to be demoted to second
string) are what held up my earlier post.

More later, enjoy the holiday!
Best,
Noah

I bought those wheels and have been riding them hard on my MTBubbe. They were
true and round out of the box and have stayed that way for over 100 miles of
Rocky single track and jumps.

I set them up tubeless with Neo Motos. They work fine. I did have to build up
the rim bed with 2 to 3 layers of tape, but the seal is holding without a
problem.

It's a great value for a very versatile wheelset.

[RBW] Re: 1x11 on a Roadini?

2019-11-27 Thread Jeff B
I have a Specialized Sequoia with 1x11 but my Roadini is 2x11.

My Roadini has a gear inch spread of 29.1" to 114" on 700/32 with a 46/30 &
11/28.

The Sequoia has a gear inch spread of 26.9" to 103" on 650B/47 with a 42 &
11/42.

They both use SRAM Force and feel great. I really dig the simplicity of 1x
but find myself using only a small section of the cassette, which might
promote accelerated wear. I never really spin out though and always can
climb hills if needed. I really never use the 46/11 on my Roadini unless
I'm really going downhill so I find that the spread is a little more
useable on the Sequoia. with a 42t chainring. I don't mind the gaps in the
cassette either, you use your legs more to power through small hills and
spend less time shifting. For centuries and light rondo it would be perfect.

If you wanted to play around and can get to Walnut Creek, Harry's Roadini
has SRAM Force 1x on it, although the bike is quite large (57 or 61)

Herse cranks are a thing of beauty. I would personally go 107mm cranks if the
chainrings clear and you won’t have heel rub issues. Since you’re going to
utilize big-big combo at times, it makes sense to move the big chainring
inboard a bit.

with the 46-30 it was nearly touching the frame, probably 0.5mm clearance,
though it never touched. I since put a 26T on which has good clearance.
Smaller rings are not only great for hills, but they get that Q factor as
low as possible!

I only have 200 km on my Sam, but it is PERFECT in my opinion with the
Herse cranks and Campagnolo Athena 11 group set. I think it's a bit more
extravagant than Grant would recommend, purely because from his Spock-like
logical thinking, it is unnecessary to spend more than the Silvers. True,
it's not necessary. But the extra cost is well spent, in my opinion!

Re: [RBW] Wanted - 59cm Clem H

2019-11-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Interesting comparison between BF and Dahon -- not that I know Fridays, but
I've always thought of them as "real" bikes, and thought Dahons suffer all
sorts of compromises because of their folding design and price points.
While my Dahon Hon Solo -- an upper-end chromo limited edition model -- is
decent and, after many modifications, is pleasant to ride, it certainly
does not feel lively compared to my "real" bikes.

That said, I also have never found my Dahon darty or awkward in handling --
I've used 30 mm-or-so Kojaks and, presently, 40 mm-or-so PowerBands (the
PBs are nicer. Am I right in thinking that these are simply variations on
the Power Block?). It handles like a non-optimum road bike and, in fact,
the sluggishness that I feel compared to my Rivs and Matthews has to do
with pedaling effort. (Again, the PowerBands roll a bit better than the
Kojaks, and those rolled a lot better than the horrible OEM Marathon
Racers. And, note, that my drivetrain (obviously) is ss fixed; no great
weight in the rear.

Question: Do you other Dahon owners find that it is hard to adjust the main
boom-tube hinge perfectly, and once adjusted, keep it that way? Even when I
adjust it frighteningly tight and locktite the adjustment nut, the hinge
always develops at least a wee bit of play after a few miles. Is this tiny
"wiggle" play normal for Dahons?

Patrick Moore, who has considered having a frame builder weld the frame
joint in place permanently ... (but who, instead of doing that, should
invest in VO's new small-wheel frame).

FWIW, I've often bought tandem-specified cable + housing for bikes with
disc brakes and full-length-housing from bar down down tube and along
chainstay to rear caliper, just to be sure. A tandem cable will work with
any long-stayed Riv single, I'll bet.

[RBW] WTB Sugino 30-46t double crankset w/ 175mm arms (or triple to make a double w/outer chain guard) or another brand 2x9

2019-11-27 Thread Pancake
*Summary*: WTB affordable 30x46t double crankset with 175mm
crankarms. Sugino would be great but open to other options. A triple that
has (or can have) the outer chain ring position replaced with a chain guard
would work just as well.

*Details*: I am building a bike for my brother-in-law (VO Campeur frame)
with components left over from my Hillborne and Cheviot builds. I'd like to
include a 2x9 drive train with the chainrings of 30t and 46t. Cassette is
XT 11-34t.

I understand there are several options for this and I'm not picky though
this is a budget, mostly spare parts build so cheaper is better:

   - Sugino double or a Sugino triple by mounting the 46T ring in the
center position and using the outer for a chain guard. OX901D, OX601D XD2,
   XD600, XD500or similar
   - Velo Orange double crankset

   - IRD Defiant Wide Compact

   - FSA Omega Adventure Crankset

   - Random mountain bike crankset that you think I can make work?

I'm open to any suggestions or ideas. Brother in law is coming from a 1984
Palo Alto (Italian steel race bike) that is WAY too small for him at 6'3"
and 34" long trousers.

Also looking to buy:

   1. 700c, 135mm wide rear wheel 9 speed compatible, 32h or 36h, can fit a
32-42mm wide tire ... it will pair with my front wheel that's an LX hub
with Atlas rim, likely 38mm Marathon tires
   2. Cantilever (CR720 or CR710 or similar) or mini-V-brakes (930AL
or 930AL) compatible with Dia Compe SS6 levers (sweptback bars, Jones H
   660mm or Albatross 56cm)
   3. Downtube shifters
   4. If you have a dropbar that 44cm wide and brakes levers I could use
that instead of my sweptback bars if the price is right.

[RBW] Re: Favorite All-around Drive train?

2019-11-27 Thread John Bokman
Lotsa good options and thoughts here. I must admit I'm leaning toward the
Herse setup, damn the cost. If I'm going to pay to go custom, I may as well
spend my wad.
107 BB or 110? (Thanks for that data point William D. R.)

One concern is that it seems to me that Grant's bikes do really well with
his spec'd components. Not so sure if they do as well without. Specifically
I'm speaking of the more "versatile" bikes, like my Sam HIll. Will the
narrow tread and shorter bottom bracket play well with this bike?

When I built up my Clem frameset recently I used a link from this forum to an

WTB All terrain 26x1.95 tires on them. Rims are fine, which the slight caveat
that they are Schraeder drilled, so I use a set of Wheels Manufacturing rim

Welcome to the list. Please post a photo of your Clem.

It used to be that cheap wheels were machine built, and that the cheaper
the wheels, the less hand truing. And $155 is pretty cheap! But perhaps
machine built wheels are better now? I've not bought machine-built wheels
for decades.

The components of those wheels are good, though, from what I hear.

I agree: spend money on good tires.

[RBW] Quick introduction and Clem parts questions

In my experience almost all lower end (cheaper) Shimano parts work really well.
That Altus derailer is great, the standard MTB levers are great, there are
cheap thumb shifters that work great, the cheaper v brakes are great. Splurge
on nice tires and a nice saddle. Go budget with everything else. This is,
obviously, just my opinion.

Thinking of getting a wheel like this for my wife’s 45 Clementine to help with
pulling kids in the bike trailer.

[RBW] Quick introduction and Clem parts questions

2019-11-27 Thread Nerl L.

Hello All,

I have been lurking here for a bit, but now with a new Clem frame set on
the way, I am posting for the first time.

I’m a commuter in NYC, where the streets can be, um, bumpy. I ride daily
in all weather, but distances aren’t high, usually 5 to 30 miles a day. I
am also not wealthy, so I’m trying to build this bike in a sensible but
economical way. I will put money towards parts that need higher quality,
but will always look for ways to cut cost.

Regarding wheels, I’m a bit stunned by the range in prices. please tell me
why I shouldn’t buy this

cheap set? If not and if you were me, what would you look at?

Finally, if anyone has parts they would part with, I’m in the market! Swept
back, low- or no-rise bars, like the Billie or Albatross. Brakes, racks,
derailleurs, etc. Consumable drive train parts I’ll buy new. I’ve got a
crankset, brake levers and shifters so far.

Thank you for your help!

Best,

Noah

[RBW] Re: There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-11-27 Thread Dorothy C
My cable challenge when I was building my 2019 45cm Clem L was that the rear
brake cable length I needed exceeded what was in the Rivendell Yokozuna brake
kit.
I had to use almost the entire housing length from the package for the rear
brake and order a new extra long Shimano mountain bike cable from another
seller. Front was fine as that one came off the hybrid I was rebuilding as the
Clem.

[RBW] Re: Happy Retirement Bob!

2019-11-27 Thread George Schick
JD - neither. It's Japanese, a '71 or '72 Fuji Finest. It was a "rescue"
bike. The fork was trashed, I got a replacement, aligned the frame,
re-spaced the rear dropouts from 126mm to 120 so I could use a Phil hub I
had in the parts box, and repainted it. It now bears Resurrectio decals
for a good reason. The RD is the original Shimano Crane (the predecessor
to Dura-Ace) that was on the bike, but the FD is a period Campy Record and
so are the DT shift levers. Everything else on the bike is newer.

I have been feeling rather nostalgic lately; missing the 80s; the

Good luck to him; I hope he's retiring early enough that he can still
 enjoy it.

2019-11-27 Thread Rob Kristoff
Jock:
I worked at a Schwinn shop in 1987 and the mentor who got me started road
riding had a Paramount that (at least in memory) was similar to yours.

So, needless to say, I LOVE your bike.

Such timeless beauty.

Re: [RBW] Wanted - 59cm Clem H

2019-11-27 Thread Joe Bernard
I've noticed this about hub-gear folders, too..the weight of it really calms
down the darty feeling compared to derailer models. So does the belt, oddly,
but I think it's psychological: I owned a Silk (I think you have it) and a
Dahon Mu Uno with belt drive and the silence has a way of making the ride seem
smoother and less involving. Weird, right?
