[RBW] Racer Wald basket

2020-04-09 Thread Joe Bernard
Tis this here.

I wasn't planning to add stuff to my Frank Jones singlespeedy but I ordered
that new cut-down-Bosco-looking bar today (Losco) and now I'm thinking a Mark's
Rack with a cut down basket might be just the trick! 

The drag is in practical terms zero, even with lights on. The modern hubs are
incredibly efficient. I'd argue dynamo systems come into their own for
commuting and randonneuring, but are also brilliant if you just popped out to
buy bread, bumped into friends and found yourself coming home in the wee hours.
The lights are on the bike - no need to plan ahead.

There's some awesome battery lights available too, especially from some German
manufacturers like B and Trelock. Those awesome lights are not cheap though
and go a long way to paying for a dynamo set up.

The best system would be good dynamo lighting and a good battery set up. But,
if a person could only choose one, my bias would be firmly on the dynamo option.

Starting at 4:30 they give the sequence for rear fender
installation using a bracket. The VO bracket you have is
easily bent to shape, one tab at a time when it is
secired to the seat stay bridge. I have used old
handlebar tape scrap stuck on the underside of the he
bracket and trimmed to fit as a gasket between the fender
and the clip. It helps to eliminate rattles. You apply
the tape before you atache the bracket to the seat stay.

Looked up Wald--nothing, Jandd has a Jandd-jp account with 428
followers. Swift has 57.2K followers, and there's no need to follow them
since their message is multiplied by influencers and happy customers.
Clearly it's up to the companies to do their marketing consistent with
their price points, and kudos to Swift for their products and marketing.

My point is that while developing markets for high end stuff is good for
the diversity of the marketplace, it has the unfortunate downside of
training people to think that perfectly good or maybe even excellent
ordinary stuff is not quite good enough which raises the bar for people
of modest means or those traditionally less represented among bike
riders to join the party. I don't mean to discount the LBSs, coops, and
coalitions doing great work to get and keep people riding and smiling at
modest cost. Any support for Taiwanese Fender Day?

[RBW] FS: Pair of skinwall Soma Supple Vitesse SL 700c KV 38mm

2020-04-09 Thread Andrew Turner
These have less than 400 miles on them but they are pretty dirty on the
sides. I originally had them on much wider Ritchey Zeta rims (MAN that was
a fast wheelset!) and they measured pretty close to 38. Today, I tried them
on A23 rims and they barely made the 35mm mark so I'm looking to let them
go.

$60 for the pair plus shipping CONUS

Cheers!
Andrew

2020-04-09 Thread Andrew Turner
Thanks for the input! Will suggested 50's (lolz) so I'm just gonna roll the
dice with those and hope for the best. I can't think of a single time
fender + tire combinations wasn't just a game of Russian roulette to my
wallet. The universe doesn't want me to break the pattern I suppose.

The good news is I have a pair of 38 marathons as back up and I'll have a
better idea of what the max tire size will be for when I want something a
bit more light + supple.

[RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-09 Thread Joe Bernard
Getting back to Adam's question - which kinda got lost in tubeless arguments
and peculiar shenanigans - having owned both I would agree that a Cheviot is
not *significantly* lighter than a Clem L. I think there's other things going
on there with full lugs and a different style - mixte v. step-thru - that make
it appealing as an aspirational frame to hang lighter/fancier parts on.

As for tires being a big player in all this, OH yeah. I've run various Schwalbe
Marathons and Big Apples and such with all their flat-protection goodies, and
they're straight-up boat anchors compared to the Compass/RH Barlow Pass on my
Frank Jones. ALL Rivs - Clem, Chev, et al - benefit from nice light tires.

[RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-09 Thread Joe Bernard
See Ken, this is where I just can't get into tubeless. I've owned a couple
bikes that cake to me that way, which was dandy because they were already
seated and pumped up; but then I needed sealant, a tool to unscrew the valve to
add sealant, and tire plugs. Ok so what do I take as tire repair stuff? Whelp,
I guess I could take all this in case I need it, plus a tube and tire levers if
the trick to getting home after a puncture is to pop a tube in there. Then when
it's time to seat a tire I'm going to need a machine because my very good
Topeak floor pump isn't good enough, or I'm not good enough at pumping.

So I get the advantages in ride, lightness and puncture resistance of tubeless,
but for a Luddite like me who does all his own work all I see is more stuff and
more work. I'm not into it.

[RBW] SKS P50 or P65 for Schwalbe Big Ben 700x50 tires

2020-04-09 Thread Andrew Turner
Hello group,
As the title suggests, I'm debating between these two fender sizes. The Big
Ben's are mounted on A23 rims so their true width is closer to 43-44mm.
Perks of the 50s would be aesthetics and probably little to no
modifications to get them to fit on the BMC monster cross frame. P65's
would cover more but would need some wicked modifications which I'm alright
with doing but it might negate performance.

Thanks!
Andrew

[RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-09 Thread JAS
Carl, thanks for the John Prine reference. He was such a talented
songwriter with so many great songs; what a loss to the music world.

I love the idea of tree henge...will you keep checking that and let us know
if/when it happens?

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello"

Are they at the groovy Instagram party? I follow bikey stuff I come across
there..albeit a small sample, I don't have an appetite for making that site a
big habit for me. I'd follow Wald for sure.

Re: [RBW] Wald Bag

2020-04-09 Thread tuolumne bikes
I agree with Eric and with most of the comments in response about the value
of the local bags. It's great that the market meets so many needs. What I
have issue with is the contradiction between wanting to widen the scope of
biking past the stereotypes (roadie, etc) but then pushing marketing/style
that effectively excludes those that either can't afford top shelf or that
enjoy riding but just aren't *obsessed* with bikes and bike stuff. When do
we invite the basic family bike shop Wald/Jandd/cheaper yet folks to the
groovy Instagram party?

I don't expect manufacturers to not market their products, but being
inclusive as a community might mean we don't need all our stuff to be
exclusive.
