[RBW] Clems for Kids

2020-09-02 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
In 2018, my older son, E, was gifted a 45 cm grilver Clem H by someone on
this list, who wishes to remain anonymous. You can read about it in the
link below.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/qrKUcYAQetM

Anyway, E was very proud of his Rivendell (an outrageously nice bicycle for
a 7th grader) and very sad that one day he would outgrow it. Conveniently,
he grew slowly though his peers shot up, but that kid hit a 5 inch growth
spurt this summer and he’s now looking me in the eye and threatening to
keep growing. Today, I pulled my husband’s cast-off 2015 52 Clem H from the
storage room and had E try it out. It fits. Not that he is happy about this
- he was attached to his bike. He’s pointed out that the blue Clem doesn’t
have “cream in the windows” (lugwork...should I let him take after it with
nail polish?) and it isn’t grilver and it “doesn’t look as cool.” But once
we got his saddle and his bags strung up, he’s warming. The Bosco Bullmoose
have got to go; he’s emphatic that the triangulation messes up the way he
had his bags. This will mean new grips, stem and bars. 

Well, what does this mean for Baby Bear? Baby Bear finally gets the grilver
Clem! He’s been riding a Specialized Hotrock (handed down from E) and he
was fond of pointing out, “It’s a fellowship of Rivendells...and a hobbit.”
We wheeled out the 45 Clem and Baby Bear tried it out. He can’t quite stand
over it (hobbits ), but he’s close. He rode the Clem up and down the
street and couldn’t believe how different it felt. When he parked the bike
he pointed to the friction thumb shifters and asked, “What are these?”

Baby Bear is my cautious kid and he’s elected to keep riding his Hotrock
for now because the dismount on the Clem unnerves him. We’re stripping the
“E” from the little Clem so it will be a blank canvas for the hobbit when
he decides to finally ride it. We’ll keep the rack and basket (Baby Bear
wants them) and the saddle will be the original Clem saddle because it’s
lightweight compared to the sprung Brooks I have laying in the bin.

The new platform is preventing my photos from going through, so I’ll try in
a comment to this post.

Goodnight,
Leah

I'm afraid I can't help with this one, I've never ridden a Sam or MIT
Homer. Maybe Roberta can chime in here, she has an Appaloosa and Homer.

Another oops. I colored outside the lines! It only now dawns on me that you
were soliciting Clems from the latest batch, which of course makes sense.
And there I go on about my old outdated 2019. But I didn't build it until
well into 2020. And nobody had responded, so I suppose I can be credited
with getting the ball rolling. I will pay more attention next time. Lots of
nice new Clems out there!

[RBW] Re: Sellers, post your full emails

2020-09-02 Thread dougP
When switching from the new version to Classic, a box pops up asking why
you want to do so. I made a list of my concerns & sent it to them. If
enough of us do that, perhaps it will change their minds.

My specific concerns are that in the new version, groups with new posts are
not indicated; in Classic they are bolded, making it easy to select which
group to review.
In Classic, "mark all as read" is a top line button; in new it's behind 3
dots.
In Classic, within a group, new posts are bolded; new version it's not
clear to me if there's any difference between new & old posts.
And of course the lack of or non-functionality of the "reply privately to
author" function that is so useful in Classic.

Just for fun, I asked them "What problem are you trying to solve?".
Probably a question they haven't considered. OTH, hopefully if they get
enough pushback they'll rethink this change.

While the box does indeed say Agnel, the saddle sure looks like a
Galibier/Solour. The width I believe matches spec for that narrower saddle
with the photo with a ruler, and there are no saddlebag loops.

I know Joe B has opinions on this as he has owned at least 2 of them.

My Bleriot is a tad big, not terrible but a tad too high for me. It also
has very lively handling, especially with Albatross bars. To counter this
a bit I hold them near the curves which puts more weight on the front end
and is very comfortable for me. My Atlantis is being built up right know
and will be ready tomorrow. I have considered replacing the Bleriot with a
Sam or Homer. Group member Rich has given me some good information, the
Sam will be a tad smaller (1cm) in 51cm and will be a definite fit, the
Homer will probably be fine. I want the bike should I do this that will be
the most comfort and stable. The chain stay difference is a couple of CM I
think. Any thoughts?

Re: [RBW] FS/T berthoud saddle

2020-09-02 Thread Steve Palincsar
Abraham doesn't mention the name of the saddle model, but it's clearly
visible in the photos: Agnel.  For those unfamiliar with this model (I'd
never heard of it) here's what they say on the Rene Herse site about
this model:

  Berthoud Women’s Saddle, Agnel/Marie-Blanque

$235.00 – $299.00

Gilles Berthoud’s extralight women-specific saddle has a shorter nose
than the Aravis saddle. Choose between titanium rails (Agnel) for
superlight weight and even more comfort (titanium rails flex more), or
economical stainless steel rails (Marie-Blanque).

Leather saddles have long offered the ultimate in comfort for
long-distance cycling, because they shape themselves to your unique
anatomy. Gilles Berthoud’s saddles use thoroughly modern materials and
construction methods, while maintaining the advantages of a tensioned
leather saddle. We’ve been riding these saddles for years, because we
find them so comfortable.

The leather is thick and initially firm, but Berthoud saddles are
pre-softened to shorten the break-in. They are comfortable after just
a few long rides, and then they last many years. If the leather gets
dry, we recommend a light treatment with Obenauf’s leather
preservative
.
Berthoud saddles rarely need tensioning. When they do, the tension is
easy to adjust with a 5 mm allen key.

Ha, I spotted a Clem L as it passed me on some park trails on Monday -
which is very unusual here in BC, we have a far lower Riv-density here!

Wheelies with >50cm chainstays are more impressive too

[RBW] FS: Parts - 650b tires mostly, Nitto Pearl 12cm/26.0, Soma 700c 38mm tires

2020-09-02 Thread David B
In search of a new tire for my 650b-converted Redwood, I've tried out a LOT
of 650b tires and amassed a somewhat embarrassing collection. I posted to
the 650b group, but figured this might be a good fit too.

I have Ultradynamico Rose tires on the way from Riv (with a Wavie bar I'm
looking forward to trying out) so need to pay off the credit card!

I've set up everything in my webshop. Links below.

Prices listed INCLUDE shipping in the US.
I can also ship outside of the US - contact me for shipping quotes.

Since Google Groups is a bit of a mess with PMs right now, you can go
through this link in my webshop to contact me if you can't reply offlist:
https://treetop.bigcartel.com/contact

There's other items in my webshop, on-topic bike bags and a couple other
parts and off-topic leather goods. Feel free to add those items and I'll
adjust combined shipping if I can fit everything in a padded flat rate
envelope.

Tires Available...

1. Panaracer Pari Moto Tires
 - 650b x 48mm - pair, new
in packaging, black/black - kinda forgot I had these - $65 shipped

2. WTB Horizon Tires
 - 650b x
47mm - pair, tanwalls, minimal use, extremely minimal wear to treads,
really not noticeable, so nearly like new tread - $70

3. Soma Grand Randonneur
 -
650b x 42mm green label, pair, lots and lots of use on these, tread is
thin, best for a backup or to test fit in a frame - $25 shipped

4. Continental Contact

- 650b, 1.9", pair, ended up being too wide for my frame, wire bead,
minimal wear to tread - $45 shipped

5. Nitto Pearl Stem
 -
12cm, 26.0mm, older version with script in side of extension - $45 shipped

6. Soma Supple Vitesse SL

- 700 x 38mm - pair, tanwalls, minimal use, briefly had these on my
now-sold Roadini - $55 shipped

[RBW] Re: Sellers, post your full emails

2020-09-02 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Thanks for bringing this up, Joe -

There is no discrete setting for me to allow this. I've flipped back and
forth between new/old google groups and cannot replicate the condition on
my MacOS system using Google Chrome.

Would one of you mind sending me a screen capture (a true screen capture -
not a photo of your monitor) when the "greyed out" Reply to Sender option
appears?

Email to cyclofiend overat gmail

Another variable would be whether or not you have permission to post to the
group, but since people are posting on the topic without having to be
approved by me, I'm assuming that's not an issue.

I have heard some issues for folks on Android (which is odd, since it's
Google's OS...but there are large number of Android flavors...)

Will poke around a bit - for those you who experience this, look for
"report a bug with new groups" option and send to the googlers...

I bought a bike and a saddle off this list last year. The bike is a keeper,
the saddle is too narrow.

It's beautiful-- titanium rails, amazing color, still with original
packaging, never treated/broken in-- but a 5 mile ride made it clear I need
a wider platform. Unfortunately, while laying around my garage for the past
year, it earned a scratch in the top. (Pix here

[RBW] Re: MUSA pants and shorts replacement elastic band?

2020-09-02 Thread Patrick Cronin
Edwin,

I've tried two replacements, both 1". One was from Amazon and it was total
crap. The other was from JoAnn Fabric and it is perfect! The latter was
"non-roll" and after comparing the two, I now understand what that means,
i.e. the Amazon one was so thin that it rolls lengthwise, whereas the JoAnn
band has ribbing that stops it from rolling or doubling over.
Here's a link with different colors:
https://www.joann.com/sewing/sewing-and-quilting-supplies/elastic/

I've also ditched the buckle and gone with a 1" plastic strap adjuster...

Cheers,
Patrick

allows you to send private messages to posters. If you prefer the style of
the new Groups, you can change it back by clicking the "View New Groups"
button in the upper left when you're finished sending the PM.

Still, it's a good idea to include an email in your post--makes things
easier for everyone.

Thanks,
Ray

Hey Craig,

Enjoyed those ads. How about supple as a constrictor but lively as a kitten?

[RBW] Re: Any flare for ankle clearance on Rivendell's Silver cranks?

2020-09-02 Thread Nick Payne
Thanks, but I use 170mm cranks. I've decided to use a reasonably mint pair
of Deore XT M739 cranks that I have in 170mm. Although they use 94/58 BCD
rather than 110/74, I have quite a few chainrings lying around that fit the
94 bolt circle, plus the chainrings that came with the cranks look
remarkably unworn and don't need replacing - judging by the generally
unmarked condition, I doubt that the cranks were ever used for more than a
few rides:
