Thanks Johnny, I took your advice and the bike rides much better! I

The new Specialized saddles are quite comfortable— I use one with a 168mm
width; it is about the same width as my Brooks saddles. They are also
impressively light.

Doug, I use Silver 2 shifters with 9-speed Rapid Rise RDs. The cable pull
length/ratio changes when I pull to the smallest cogs. From the largest
gear to, say, the fifth cog down, the cable pull amount is about the same
from gear to gear. Going further down the sprocket definitely requires more
cable pull.

Re: [RBW] Your preferred non-leather saddle

2022-09-22 Thread Richard Rose
I was totally in love with my SQ Labs 611 “active” saddle on my Jones 29 with
somewhat upright position. They offer instructions for measuring sit bones then
using a formula to calculate the correct width. Most comfortable saddle I’d
ever owned - on any bike. When I got my Clem it just was not wide enough for my
very upright position. So I went whole hog & got a B67, which is superb. I
would suggest SQ to anyone. Better shops have their fit kit in house & would
let you try different saddles.

The bike shop I worked at would let you try out a saddle for a couple of
days or a week as long as it's returned in sellable shape. Discus your
experience with leather saddles and the sales person could help you select
one that works for you. A good time to establish a relationship with the
shop too if you buy a saddle from them.

[RBW] Re: Your preferred non-leather saddle

2022-09-22 Thread Ben Adrian
I have tried a lot of saddles and I find that I can't do any that have a
strong arc or curve. It's too much of a "taint blaster". Unfortunately,
I've found that almost all leather saddles have either too much arc, or are
difficult to get into position. I have found a number of modern saddles
that I like.

Specialized Power and Toupe saddles - 155mm width for me. These are flat
and feel stable and comfortable. However, they do work best with padded
bike shorts if the ride is long, and can start to get challenging after a
couple hours without a padded chamois.

I also have a Selle SMP "Plus" model as well. This has worked great on my
Riv; correct amount of padding, desireable shap, but OH IT'S UGLY

I revently picked up a Rivet Imogene saddle from this forum. It's a flat,
pretty wide saddle. I THINK it's working, but I"m waiting for a longer
setback seatpost before I decide for sure.

But holy hell, saddles are a litera and figurative pain in the ass until
something comes along and you ride and stop thinking about it.

Cheers!
Ben

Re: [RBW] Your preferred non-leather saddle

2022-09-22 Thread Josiah Anderson
I agree with Joe, the Fizik Aliente is pretty good as non-leather saddles
go, if that's the same one I'm thinking of. Mine is much older and is
battered beyond recognition at this point. I love the Selle Italia Flite
for race bikes, but I can't imagine it working well in as upright a
position as you described, and they're getting rare and quite expensive, so
I don't think I can agree with that suggestion.

I also like the Brooks C17 with some shellac added to make it smooth; there
should be a thread on ibob or maybe here where I posted about that a couple
years ago. It has the same sort of soft hammock feeling as a leather saddle
once broken in, but is definitely not the same shape as any leather Brooks.
However, nothing is more comfortable for me than a well-broken-in Brooks
Pro or Idéale 90 (or B17 for upright positions), and since a saddle is
better for me the more it feels like one of those, something entirely
different that what I've recommended might be better for you.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini 61 on Craigslist (not mine)

2022-09-22 Thread J J
We lost it, Joe. In the immediate aftermath, a quiet hush descended over
the entire shop because everyone was shocked by what happened. And then it
was like, wtf?!?

The shop's first response was an unsatisfying and defensive, "it was an
honest mistake," and they would have been content to settle it with a mere
apology. After a lot of negotiation, the shop agreed to reimburse for labor
and to replace the brakes — but good luck finding polished (or any other
finish) NOS Racers. It's been three months since it happened and I've heard
nothing but crickets. So I was super pleased with Eric's message about Paul
Component resuming Racer production.

It had taken me nine months to find the brakes — scouring the interwebs,
cold calling dozens of bike shops all over the country, putting out WTB
posts. Finally a set appeared in an eBay auction listing. I preempted the
auction by offering the seller a (very) pretty penny for them. I wanted
those brakes.

Now... I have not lost perspective. This ordeal was upsetting, but it was
not an issue of grave existential importance. Still, these things matter to
bike nerds and to nerds in the making.

Getting back to the original theme of this thread, I'll reiterate that if I
had the option, I would gladly and enthusiastically pay Rivendell to do any
frame prep, builds, etc. over any of my local bike shops, even if it meant
waiting a while.

Trying and failing for years consecutively sounds pretty rough. I'm not
that patient.

What works for me might not work for you, though.

If/when I have no clue what works for me, I enthusiastically try saddles as
cheaply as I can. The best deal I know of is bike shops that have a test
saddle program. For most shops that have a test saddle program, they have
a bunch of test saddles. They charge you something like $40, and you get
to try as many of their test saddles as you like over some time period,
like 90 days. After the time is up, if you decide to buy a saddle, they
knock $40 off the price. If you don't buy a saddle, they keep your $40.

I think that's a good program.

This might be bad advice since I like brooks saddles (the B-17), and only
gave up on them because my sweat in combination with my riding style
basically destroyed too many B-17s so quickly that I went with a lower

I find the Selle Italia flite comfortable in all positions. I rode an original

I couldn’t get comfortable on a turbo or rolls and hated the Brooks Cambiums. I

[RBW] WTB: 60 Riv Simpleone Frame/Fork

2022-09-22 Thread Michael Ullmer
All this talk of Riv Singlespeeds by Bill and others has me wanting to try
out a Simpleone Frame. I passed one up years ago and am kicking myself for
it now.

I recently built up a Trek 520 as a fixed gear and while I love it, it
leaves much to be desired, mainly in terms of tire/fender clearance. I can
fit 32mm tires, but alas there's not enough clearance for fenders.

A simpleone would allow much more room for wider tires/fenders, and put me
solidly back in the Riv Owners Bunch membership (currently no Rivs in the
stable).

Anyone have one they're sitting on. I'm set on components/wheels, just need
the frame/fork and maybe the headset.

Thanks!
Mike in Minneapolis

Re: [RBW] Re: Roaduno substitute for a while...

2022-09-22 Thread Patrick Moore
If you forgo a derailleur, the whole point is to maintain the simplicity of
a fixed gear or at least single speed drivetrain. So expect few alternative
gear ratios. OTOH, fixed gear/ss aficionados with aging lungs and knees
need help: solution? main, direct, cruising gear + climbing/bailout gear.

How to do this? Expensive and elusive SA 2-speed fixed gear hubs aside,
much more available, slanted longish dropouts or the ENO hub. Many old
road bikes have slanted dropouts; you can use the ENO eccentric axle hub on
vertical dropout frames.

Me, the whole point of fixed/ss drivetrains is lost if you try to get too
many gears on a "ss/fixed" setup. After all, the derailleur has been
perfected to the point that no other multigear system can compete -- unless
you look at the alternatives as "expansions" of the ss/fixed drivetrain. I
say this as someone who for personal arcane reasons loves SA hubs. (My
reasons are logical.)

All that to say that my experience leads me to really like the idea of
combining old pre-susp but post-Repak mtb frames with ENO hubs. That very
early '90s top-end Diamond Back with rigid (and, I have to say, very
elegant straight-leg, finely tapered fork) with 60 mm Big Apples and 64" ss
drivetrain (42 t Pro 5 Vis X 17 t fw, 170 mm arms) was almost perfect as a
pavement/sandy-dirt all-rounder, tho' I think I'd gear it up today to 68"
with a 16 t fw. Or, if I wanted some range, a 44 in place of the 42, and a
16/18 or for the weak 17/19 DOS fw.

The Silver 2 shifters look wonderful. I got the less expensive option of
the Suntour Power Thumbies (two sets actually) and love them. The Silver 2

The most recent example was a fender installation on a Wilbury on which
we had just installed a NOS set of Paul Racers (the hard to find polished

Long story as short as I can make it: the eager, wide-eyed mechanic who
wanted to work on the bike because he “loves Rivendells” did it his way,
anyway. The fender hanger tab that bolts onto the brake hole on the fork
was unevenly bent and rubbing against the headset as the handlebar moved

I went and measured the stack and reach on both bikes. Turns out my
touring bike actually has a higher stack (71.8cm measured from BB to
handlebar hood) and reach (45cm measured from BB to handlebar stem
 center),
while the Roadini had 68.58cm and 41.91cm on both of those measurements.
What is significant is that the BB height on the touring bike is 10.5"
while the BB height on the Roadini is 11", which is a 1.3cm difference. I
guess I can definitely feel a 13mm difference in center of gravity shift,
5mm of which is accounted for by the BB drop difference, and then other
 8mm
is accounted for by the bigger tires (which is strange since the
 difference
between tires is basically going from 25mm to 30mm tires, but 3mm
difference might be within the margin of error)

Re: [RBW] Re: Do Roadinis ride tall?

2022-09-22 Thread lconley
Bicycle tires are basically circles in cross section, as the tire gets
wider it also gets taller. The width of the rim will impact the width to a
certain degree, but not the height. Modern car tires a more like rectangles
where the width and height are independent of one another.

Re: [RBW] Re: Do Roadinis ride tall?

2022-09-22 Thread Piaw Na
I went back and measured the height of my tires, and discovered that
indeed, the tires were 8mm taller on the Roadini than on my touring bike.
It's very strange, since these were nominally 700x28 or 700x30mm tires, but
measured only 27mm wide on the rims. I guess all the extra material on
"wider" tires went into raising the height of the tire (which is
undesirable) as opposed to increasing the width of the tire (which was what
I expected). Does this continue as you increase tire size? For instance, if
I got a 700x38mm tire, would I expect to it to end up being only 30mm wide,
but end up adding another 1cm to the height of the bike?

Re: [RBW] Re: New Roadini Clearance and Brake Reach

2022-09-22 Thread Michael Doleman
My plan is to use the GC700 front and rear, for the sake of consistent look
and convenience (the 610 has threaded pad mounting, while the 700 has
unthreaded posts). Also I'd just prefer to keep sets together.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thank you Rivendell

2022-09-22 Thread Doug H.
Thank you Rich. The description of shifting on Rivendell's website makes
sense to me and I don't think I need a 9 speed cassette as I don't shift
often to maintain a certain cadence. The one thing I'm still getting used
to with friction shifting is that not every gear change requires as equal
amount if shifter lever movement so that I imagine having only 7 gears in
the rear will help facilitate muscle memory for the movement in various
gears. Do you notice this as well when friction shifting?

[RBW] Re: New Roadini Clearance and Brake Reach

2022-09-22 Thread lconley
I got them off of eBay a few years ago. Just save your search and eBay will
keep looking for them 24/7. That is where I get my Brooks B68 saddles,
Vetta boxes and Nigel Smythe bags. Getting fewer hits lately, but takes no
effort and costs nothing. Just have to go through the false hits - Brooks
B68 turns up baseball cards and Vetta turns up sneakers and watches, but
you can turn the automatic emails off and just check manually, but
reasonably priced B68s go quickly.

[RBW] Re: New Roadini Clearance and Brake Reach

2022-09-22 Thread Michael Doleman
Sorry if I caused any confusion, my post was supposed to be more about
whether the GC610 brake model would work on the new Roadini models. I only
intended to mention the reach differential between frame/fork as a "by the
way" thing. I realize it's a thing on many other bikes -- I've worked on
lots of other framesets where the difference is even more pronounced (and
I've never been sure the cause of it). To answer the first response, I
didn't intend to imply there was anything at all wrong with putting the
GC700 brake both front and back (which is what I'll do).

There had been a much earlier thread wherein several people were concerned
about the braking power of long-reach caliper style brakes, in particular
the Tektro side-pull models. So I'd mentioned I would test the GC610 when
my partner received her new Roadini. It was just interesting to me that it
works perfectly well up front but not back. No big deal, the GC700 is
effectively the same brake; in some respects maybe even better.

In a previous conversation I promised to post my findings on actual
brake reach needs for the new Roadini frames. Specifically, I had been
speculating that the Dia-Compe/Gran-Compe model GC610 center-pull could
work, despite having only 61 of the specified-as-required 63 millimeters
 of
 reach.

My partner just received her new 50cm model, and I've conducted some
initial studies. Findings are interesting, the main one being that there
seems to be a rather huge difference between reach needed for the frame
versus the fork. For the fork, the GC610 very easily works, with plenty to
 spare.

On the frame itself, it's a different matter. The brake shoe is very
close to contacting the (35mm) tire.

Some might argue that it could work, but don't include me in that set
 -- too close for comfort.

So I'll be installing the GC700 model which gives another 9mm of reach
and is a very nice brake as well.

Side note: the fit of the rear wheel axle into the dropout was really
tight. At first I didn't have the wheel set into it properly and it
appeared that the reach was even greater. Make sure you get the wheel
properly seated into the dropout -- with the paint, it's quite tight.

I tried to add photos to this message but was told the post was too
 long with them.

After much debate, I think I'm going to sell my Large Susie Longbolts .
I built it up as a commuter but quickly realize I prefer my prior commuter
better. Anyway, I'm not right now ready to ship it so local pickup only in
the Tallahassee Area. I am willing to drive a couple of hours with the
 bike
to facilitate the sale. Bike has a total of around 200 miles or so.

 Specs Below
 Susie Large Frame - Orange
 SRAM GX 11-Speed Rear Derailleur
 SRAM 11-Speed 11-42 Rear Cassette
 Microshift 11-Speed Thumb Shifter
 Billie Bar
 Nitto Technomic Stem
Wheels - Deore XT laced with Velocity Cliffhanger Rims
 Tires- G-One Speed 55mm, Tubeless
Sugino AT Crankset with Wolftooth 36t Narrowide Chainring.
 Avid 7 V-Brakes
 Brooks B17 Saddle
Pedals and Rear Rack are not included.

 I'm asking $2600.
