2024-06-26 Thread Andrew Letton
Ah, I remember that ride with fond memories. I rode it several times (as a

 wrote:

Last Saturday I rode the SCR 200k that rides up to Half Moon Bay and back to
Santa Cruz, including some miles through San Gregorio/Stage Rd.,
Pescadero/Haskins Hill etc.
I think the best part of the ride was that 8 of the 9 riders stuck together
throughout the ride and finished the ride together.  This made it a great
opportunity to ride with friends and make several new friends.
One of the riders, Jim, rode one of the early Riv road bikes (color red) and I
was riding my red Roadeo, so we had a good presence there.  (Many would argue
that our red bikes are not as fast as orange ones, but nevertheless...)
The morning started out foggy on the coast, and unlike the previous ride a few
weeks earlier, I neglected to wipe my lenses with the anti-fog wipes, which
were effective the previous ride; so unfortunately, I had to windshield wiper
my lenses with my fingers throughout my jaunt up the coast.

One of my ride mates, Ioannis, didn't know about these anti-fog wipes, and they
work quite well.  They became especially popular during COVID times when masks
would cause glasses to fog up, and these wipes helped prevent that.

Although the temperatures got into the 90s inland, by the coast, it was
extremely pleasant, especially after the fog burned off mid-morning.  We
stopped by a bakery in Half Moon Bay, where it was nice and sunny, and I ate a
delicious ham and cheese croissant as well as a chocolate croissant, although
in this case, the savory one hit the spot better.  As I mentioned previously, I
am seriously considering PBP 2027, and feel confident that savory croissants
can fuel my ride very well.  I'll have to see how I feel about that after
riding 300 miles, but I remain hopeful.
Usually one of the best parts of the day is when we ride down the coast back to
Santa Cruz with a tailwind, and we were not disappointed on our return down the
beautiful coast.  A couple spots had some lingering fog that added to the
coastal scenery with rugged beaches to the right and some beautiful meadows on
our left.
I'm thinking that either I should have easier access to my phone, or I should
bring my camera along, especially on the 200k so I can document the beautiful
views as I ride.
The 200k is always an enjoyable ride distance because you usually get to end in
the daylight and have an opportunity to enjoy a nice dinner afterwards.  Many
of us ate some good Mexican food after the ride, and despite a little traffic
getting out of Santa Cruz, we took our time and enjoyed the rest of the evening.
I definitely want to give thanks to my fellow riders, whose company made the
day go by smoothly and delightfully.
Toshi in Oakland, CA

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Technomic Stem

2024-06-26 Thread Kim H.
@Joel,

One of the main reasons why I bought a Clem Smith Jr L bicycle is having no
difficulty in mounting and dismounting of my bike as a senior cyclist. I
found it difficult to swing my right leg over the back end of my former
bike.

The ride comfort of my Clem is steady and smooth as an elongated bike of 80
inches.

Worth considering IMHO.

So, in a nutshell, you are trying to find a way to get your handlebar
 higher ? Right ?

After a long research on the internet, I found that long quill stem. I
was and remain very pleased with the outcome. I just couldn't cross the
threadless stem bridge as stubborn as I am from being old school. My bike
 would not look right.

Let me know what your decision choice is.

Joel, maybe look into one of those Nitto 4 bolt face plate stems. I believe
that the quill is just as long as the Technomic, or Tallux, at 225 cm but
the stem comes out at 90 degrees which gives you a few extra cm of height.
A little geometry, or an online stem length/height calculator, will tell
you how much.

Concerning a step through for balance issue mitigation - I don't know.
Maybe getting on is easier since you don't necessarily have to swing your
leg over the saddle but when you stop the lack of a crossbar makes keeping
the bike upright a little trickier. I got my Clem Jr. this spring (love it,

I dropped the bike. I've since gotten used to it, sort of. That said youay
be right, getting on and off might be easier if the balance is getting to
be an issue. Good luck!

New Email Newsletter all about the Roaduno is out. So, based on my above

the complete instead and letting me in on the parts. The price delta is
$650. My offer is $700 plus my personal expert labor in helping you pull
your complete together. You'll get the frame a hair cheaper. I only want
to do this if it's local, so we don't have to ship things around.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roaduno - Are you buying one?

2024-06-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
The down tube graphics are exceptional. I agree the purple "1" on the
silver pops. I'm hooked on the Saint Jump stickers.

I bought two different R05C0 8U883 bikes because of the rocket headbadge.
The Rosco Bubbe Road that I owned is available from CMR right now, and I
endorse it.

I half want to convince one of you frame set buyers to get a complete
instead so I can grab the parts kit. I want a set of the svelte new Silver
cranks (in 173) and the Saint Jump wheels are great too. If you are in the
East Bay hand-off range and want to do something, let me know.

[RBW] Re: Internal rim width

2024-06-26 Thread J J
Hey Dylan. Yes, I've run the Fleecers on Dyads with tubes. No problems at
all. They were on a Hunq and I rode them hard, frequently with heavy loads.
I have different tires now, but I would not hesitate to run Fleecers on
Dyads again.

For what it's worth, I had *endurance plus* casing, as my previous
experience with various RH tires in standard and extra light casing showed
me that the latter two were very, very, very prone to sidewall gashes and
flats on regular pavement and easy gravel trails, nothing hardcore or
"technical". I had more flats with standard and extra light than with any
other tires I have ever used.

Thanks for the tips!I will check that it’s straight.  The cage is rather narrow and perhaps later on I’ll look for a 9-10sp one and if it’s wider, a little less rub.  I probably won’t make any other adjustments because it’s only a minor inconvenience.  On today’s ride it only happened a handful of times and I just nudged it.  The imperfections are what make the whole experience interesting ;-)JasonOn Jun 26, 2024, at 11:40 AM, Joe Bernard wrote:I've never experienced a FD where I never had to trim, even with indexed front shifting. weeks). Hopefully I can make the Fall Ride - with the added bonus of nicer
weather!

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Technomic Stem

2024-06-26 Thread Kim H.
You are more than welcome, Joel.

So, in a nutshell, you are trying to find a way to get your handlebar
higher ? Right ?

After a long research on the internet, I found that long quill stem. I was
and remain very pleased with the outcome. I just couldn't cross the
threadless stem bridge as stubborn as I am from being old school. My bike
would not look right.

Let me know what your decision choice is.

Sincerely,
Kim.

Hoping you are well and riding, my Hillborne seems to be the most

I am looking to buy the right indexed/friction 9-speed Shimano Dura-Ace bar
end shifter Model SL-BS77 without buying the pair. If you have one stashed
away in your parts drawers, and in good condition and working order. I
would like to buy it from you.

Send me some pictures.

Paypal payment, please.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Adjustment - Friction DT Shifters

2024-06-26 Thread Joe Bernard
I've never experienced a FD where I never had to trim, even with indexed
front shifting. After a while you'll get to know when you're about to have
chain rub and will start moving the fd a smidge before you up- or
down-shift the rear.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Inspired Ibisu

2024-06-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
Brian

It's not a stupid question and you are right that c-to-c vs c-to-t is just
a 1.5cm difference. I think Ken answered at the top that there is a
significant difference in fit philosophy between Iimura-san and Rivendell.
They provided Iimura-san some measurements and Iimura-san designed a bike
that "fits" according to Iimura-san. Somebody who is habituated to a
Riv-fit may find that fit sort of tiny. The OP Ken reported a similar
story with other traditional fitters and his Waterford. It's just
different philosophies.

Ken also stated the opinion that we customers should not prescribe to bike
designers how to design a bike. Some customers think that's the definition
of a custom. I'm going to specify every single thing. The middle ground,
I think, is Stack and Reach. If Ken's brother had only given Iimura-san
the Stack and Reach numbers he was after, then I think the frame would have
been quite a bit bigger. The setup would have been a French looking
"fist-of-seatpost", but would have fit great. My own Ebisu (second-hand)
is big. Here are three bikes that fit me and have similar Stack and Reach:

https://flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/13016460295/in/photolist-kxtPZa-kQdGgx-kQdLae-kQfyiU-21SYx66-7pi77s-83uZiE-8v5RMV-2jzMoAM-2p1fwnV-oQfqiq-7peeRR-7pefcB-7pi6Dm-7pi6HG-7pi71o-8nSHbN-8pbMo7-95X2JT-9616Gj

https://flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/53117530540/in/photolist-2oVPef5-2pHGgUk-2pHGgYZ

They all look a lot different. The point is that a level top tube bike to
fit like a Rivendell has to be pretty large and have a lot less standover.

Hi Joel,

One more suggestion, albeit more extreme than a stem change, would be to
have a framebuilder replace the existing steerer tube with a taller one.
I guess that alternative would depend on how committed you are to keeping
the Saluki. Good luck with whatever direction you choose. The mixtes you
mentioned would be on my list as well if my septugenarian body demands it
at some point!

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Adjustment - Friction DT Shifters

2024-06-26 Thread Drew Saunders
I agree, it seems likely that your FD is rotated just a wee bit. I'm not
familiar with "indexing" FDs, like your GRX 810, but I would expect them to
be wider than older friction only FDs, just to accommodate the fact that
indexing front shifters can't trim. Either I'm the best home mechanic, or I
got really lucky, in that when I set up my new-to-me c. 1990 Campy Croce
d'Aune FD for 2x11 friction, I got it in just the right spot no not rub on
the chain through the entire 11 speed range with the "big" ring (middle
position of a 26-42-guard triple). I was fully expecting to have to trim as
I ran the cassette. With my bar-end shifters and 9-speed, I would
occasionally have to trim the FD as I used more of the cassette, but I
shifted the FD a lot more with a triple than with my "one-by with bailout"
setup.

Anyway, if you want to embrace full friction, a simpler, older FD may do
the trick. A quick search on eBay for "Shimano 600 front derailleur" got
quite a few for under $20. Ultregra was one time "600" then "600 Ultregra"
so that's an easy search for older Ultegra-level equipment. Dura Ace has
been Dura Ace for a very long time, but an older 8-speed or 9-speed era DA
FD would be nice too, but for more money. I went with a Campy FD to go with
my Mavic DT shifter so I could maximize the number of different brands in
my drivetrain just to be a contrarian.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Adjustment - Friction DT Shifters

2024-06-26 Thread aeroperf
“…often making minor adjustments…” kind of goes along with friction
shifting, but if it seems excessive, check that the front derailleur cage
is absolutely parallel to the big chain ring. It only takes one chain jam
to knock it askew. Also that the outer stop of the front derailleur is
adjusted as “in” as possible (towards the bike center) to *just* get a
shift up to the big chain ring.

If nothing else works you can try using a 9-speed front derailleur. It
should have a slightly wider cage, giving you more rear gears before it
starts to rub. The downside is a little more shifter motion before you
start to move the chain.

This may be a stupid question, so if I'm way off, I'm hoping someone here
will enlighten me. Regarding the difference in c-c vs. c-t, wouldn't that
difference be somewhat nominal given the latitude we are used to with a lot
of Rivendell frame sizes? I mean, unless we're talking about a frame with a
sloping top tube, wouldn't that only be 1 to 1.5 cm difference for a frame
with a traditional mostly horizontal top tube? It seems to me if I could
ride both a 51cm and a 54cm Sam Hillborne by altering my cockpit setup
slightly, measuring c-t vs. c-c would not factor much into the overall
fit... but again, I could be way off base in my understanding.

Careful measurements of several most-comfortable reference bikes

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Inspired Ibisu

2024-06-26 Thread Ryan
That is a lovely frame...very clean and understated. It's too bad it didn't
fit. Wonder what the story is...confusion about how frame size is measured
like @Max suggests? You would think for a custom frame , given some
objective measurements like PBH, Ibisu should be able to nail the size
exactly rather than selecting the optimum size from a couple of production
sizes; the subject of many posts on this forum.

Golly that's gorgeous and kind of heartbreaking, the thought of
ordering a custom Ebisu and it doesn't fit. Were mistakes made on the
front end? Ordering the wrong dimensions?

Since it was acquired recently, what was the turnaround time? A year?
Less? More? I ride by the shop frequently and think about getting a
 custom built...
