Re: [RBW] Nine is fine! 1x9 drivetrains in 2024. Who else is doing it?

2024-07-24 Thread Ben Adrian
Not 1x9, but close.

My wife and I are lucky enough to own a vacation rental in Portugal. After
renting a bike for every visit, I decided that it would be worth it to just
buy a bike to keep over there. I ended up getting a killer deal on a steel
frame cyclocross bike from 1998. It has cantis and could easily fit 38c
tires. I did a bunch of parts swaps and ended up with a 2x9 drivetrain
(46/30 in the front and 11-36 in the rear), barcons, noodle bars, and a few
other things that I can't remember.

The result is a bike that is somewhere between gravel race bike, and
Rivendell. It feels great, everything works well, and I think I spent less
that $500 on all the secondhand parts. It is such a fun ride that I just
don't even think about gear or setup when on the bike. I jump on, I go, and
I'm all smiles.

Cheers!
Ben

[RBW] Re: Favorite clip-in/flat pedal combo?

2024-04-24 Thread Ben Adrian
I've been using the Crank Brothers double shot pedals for a while and
really like them. The platform is nice for me, and the clip-in side is as
good as any other brand I've tried.

Crank Brothers are kind of like the forgotten brother of clip in pedals. I
only tried them because my friend used to get a discount. Since then, I've
found that I can often find great deals on barely-used pedals. I think
people try them, but move back to SPD; probably because the rest of their
bikes use SPD. So I've picked up Candy, Egg Beater, and Double Shot pedals
for very good prices. I recently got a set of Double Shot 3 pedals. I had
only used the Double Shot 1 up until then. The 3 series fees MUCH nicer to
me.

I will also add that the Egg Beater style of pedal has been my favorite
version of clip-in pedals. You can clip in from any angle. Insertion and
removal feels very smooth. Everything is rebuildable. And they are one of
the lighter pedal systems... if you care about that.

Good luck!
Ben

Re: [RBW] Advantages of triple drivetrains (VO post)

2024-01-09 Thread Ben Adrian
I had that same thought, Bill. The big ring on my triples are always the
least used.

"Unfortunately," my brank is a 110bcd with the Bikingreen 46/30 chainring
set... machined from one piece of aluminum.
But if a WI VBC crank pops up used, I'll make a dash for it!

Honestly its all marketing to me. I like the simplicity of a 1x because I
get the bulk of the gears I need with less maintenance. For me (personally

Re: [RBW] Advantages of triple drivetrains (VO post)

2024-01-09 Thread Ben Adrian
I've been kind of triple-curious again. I live in a hilly part of L.A. My
commuter/city bike has an 11-34 11s with a 46/30 front. I've been finding
the 46 to 30 jump to feel pretty large. It feels much more dramatic than
50-34. For instance, if I switch big to small in the from, I'll sift down
at least 3 cogs on the back to totally avoid spinning out immediately. I
sometimes find myself mildly cross chaining in either direction to find the
right gear.

So I've been thinking of either going 1x, or 3x. My other bike is 1x, and
it's a carbon all-road/gravel thing. I like the setup for rougher terrain.
Also, I just don't like the idea of having duplicate bikes. I also
romanticize the bike I had about 20 years go, which had an 11-27 9 speed
with 24/36/46. At the time, it felt luxurious, natural, and easy. But I
didn't know then what I know now, and many times when I've set up a modern
bike like this one from my past, I get quickly disillusioned and undo that
change.

I kinda feel like the headline should be "triples: still fun and useful for
hands on bike nerds who like to tinker."

[RBW] FS: Dia Compe Gran Compe 610 Centerpull Brakes

2023-10-31 Thread Ben Adrian
Dia Compe Gran Compe 610 centerpull brakes.
Comes with straddle cables and hangers.
Recessed nut.

Amazing brakes, but the spring tension was a bit high for me.

$110 for the set, shipped in the L48

Photos are easiest to find here.

Re: [RBW] Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-10-09 Thread Ben Adrian
I've been on the lookout for a set of Paul Racer brakes for my rim brake
bike. I tend to find that cheaper U brakes have too much spring tension and
are not adjustable. My expectation is that Paul with be a very nicely made
brake with much more tweakability that I'll enjoy. I probably should just
buy it new to support the semi-local business.

Re: [RBW] Re: Style on the bike

2023-10-04 Thread Ben Adrian
I was in Portugal in May and got a pair of these capri-length
shorts/knickers at Decathlon.
https://www.decathlon.fr/p/bermuda-de-randonnee-nh500-homme/_/R-p-332747

Now, I've always loved the "longer than shorts, shorter than pants"
clothing. But sometimes people are less friendly to dudes who wear capris.
Luckily, when I tried them on my wife thought that I looked super cute. So
those short pants became the hit of the summer. They are by far my best
short/pants for casual bike riding. They are my best non-lycra pant. I
should have bought 4 of 'em. Next time I'm gonna stock up.

 Hi everyone,

I'm looking forward to seeing y'all this Saturday at Griffith for our
LA Riv meet-up! All riders are welcome, Riv bike owners or not.
 Originally,
the meet-up was for 8 AM, but I want to push it back an hour to start in
some warmer weather. If anyone isn't cool with this, we can always go back
to the og time, just LMK.

*As a reminder, here are the details:*

 When: 9 AM
Where: Franklin's Cafe across from the Greek at 2650 N Vermont Ave,
 Los Angeles, CA 90027
Route: Loop around Vista del Valle to the Observatory around 10 mi with
 1k ft. of climbing

Optional Extras: If people want, we can throw in a pie stop at House of
Pies after the Observatory &/or add on the Hollywood Sign climb for folks
who want to do some more climbing!

 the

Isaac and Matt, I'm gonna try to make it out to the Cub House that

U.K. sources in teh last 5 years or so. that would be my guess.

[RBW] FS: Rambouillet 58cm Orange

2023-01-13 Thread Ben Adrian
Early 2000's Rivendell Rambouillet 58cm frame (Grant from Rivendell swears
this is my size, but I'm a corgi with a long torso and short legs  ),
Orange and Cream finish, lots of small paint dings, some touch-up paint
from a previous owner, small top tube dent. Everything works great and it
still looks stunning, but it was once somebody's daily driver and shows
appropriate wear.

The Rundown:

   - 58cm Rivendell Rambouillet Frame/Fork
   - Mavic Open Pro Rims on Ultegra 6500 Hubs (32h) (12-26 cassette)
   - Ultegra 6500 Deraillures with 3x8 Bar End Shifters
   - Sugino XD Triple Crank 48-38-26
   - Panaracer Pasela 35c folding bead tires with maybe 50-60 miles.
   - TRP RRL Brake Levers
   - Soma Highway One bars (42cm)*BUT I also have some Nitto Noodle
bars in 42cm. take your pick!*
   - Nitto Cold forged 7cm stem (Tallux? It's pretty tall) *BUT I also
have the same model in 10-11cm. take your pick!*
   - I'll also toss in an 8 speed 11-32 cassette and derailleur hanger
extender. I ran that for a while and while shifting was not quite as
   awesome, having a 26 x 32 gear was nice.
   - Oh, there is also a set of beat up SKS fenders that I will include.

$1,600. + actual shipping cost. I'd, of course, prefer a local sale, but I
can ship to a loving home.

Why am I selling? I'd want to know as a buyer.
The size is a little big for me. It has never felt quite right. The ride is
great. It glides over the road beautifully. Still ,I never was able to make
myself comfortable. I just want to try other things.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Derailleur precision and wear characteristics for 11+ speed systems

2022-11-30 Thread Ben Adrian
Campy Ekar is machanical only and has 13 speeds. I've heard nothing but
good reviews (also, how high price comments). My guess is that they just
have a lot of cable pull and the derailleur is a lower ratio than other
mechanicals.

There's also the Ratio Technology retro-fit kit that turns SRAM 10 or 11
speed mechanical into a 12 speed with their SRAM MTB mechanical standard,
so one can run road shifters up front and mechanical 12speed MTB in the
back. I've also heard good things about this.

I think the problems mainly come when people try to make a 1.7:1 ratio
derailleur (like Shimano 7-8-9 speeds) work on higher numbers of cogs.

Re: [RBW] SunTour Rachet Bar Ends shifting a Modern RD - Need to Trim??

2022-11-28 Thread Ben Adrian
I have a nutty setup at the moment:
Silver 1 shifters
R7000 105 rear derailleur (yes, this is modern 11 speed which has a lower
cable pull ratio)
11-32 8 speed cassette
9 speed chain

In general, it works really well. I have has some issues "finding" the
larger cogs. When shifting from small to the 6th or 7th cogs, it sometimes
either doesn't go enough, or goes too much. I make up for it by
intentionally shifting too far and then trimming it back down. A bit
tiresome, but I'm okay with it for the simplicity of the setup.

Also, since this RD has a 1.4 cable pull ratio rathe than a 1.7 of the 9
speed and earlier RDs, it sould have finer movement. I believe that I have
experienced this. The R7000 is definitely more forgiving than the RD-6500
that I had on previously. Thought if I want to go back to my indezed
shifters, I know this RD won't work.

Cheers!
Ben

[RBW] Los Angeles Ride Saturday October 1st

2022-09-26 Thread Ben Adrian
Hello Riv List. I often plan rides for my non-racing bike friends. Many of
them are Riv riders and a few even post here. This Saturday I"m doing a
fun, casual ride around L.A. to eat donuts, talk music, and nerd out on
bicycles. The description I posted to my friends is below. Thanks!

--

I love donuts. I love bikes. Let's do both! I've planned a mostly flat,
casual ride, but there are a couple of little climbs thrown in because it's
L.A. and you can't avoid it.

Saturday October 1st. 9:00 am.
Ms. Donut.
1353 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026

Meet up at Ms. Donut for the first snack.
We then ride to the river path (first climb to get there) and stop by La
Colombe if anyone wants good coffee.
After that it's up to Eagle Rock to Colorado Donut.
Next is a sharp climb, a fast descent, and a stop at Donut Friend for any
vegan needs.
Then a cruise AROUND Mt. Washington (not over), through Chinatown, and
landing at Donut Man (or whatever else you want) at Grand Central Market.
Then back to the start.

I'm going to promote this ride to the Rivendell owner's list. Really, ride
any bike you want and wear whatever you want. All are welcome. Still, if
you are fortunate enough to own more than one bike, I encourage riding your
steel frame, flat pedal, easy-going commuter bike.

A few pieces of advice.

   - Parking can be annoying if you plan to drive to the ride. You're
welcome to meet at my place at 8:30 and ride down with me. Text me for
   details if you need them.
   - There is also no bathroom at the start. There's a McDonald's across
   the street, though.
   - It's probably a good idea to bring a lock on this ride.
   - At least one donut shop is Cash Only.

See you Saturday!

Re: [RBW] Re: Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-09-23 Thread Ben Adrian
Since I didn't REALLY want to mangle the pods, I decided to dremed the
square centered washer spacers. A few minutes carefullt carving on each and
I got the stopper washers to fit over the indexing alignment bump.

Here's hoping for the best on my ride this evening.
I really live in a charmed world... Amixing shifting on the downtube where
I have to lean dow a couple inches vs quick-access bar end with MAYBE a bit
of bonus friction from the housing.

Cheers!
Ben

[RBW] Re: Your preferred non-leather saddle

2022-09-22 Thread Ben Adrian
I have tried a lot of saddles and I find that I can't do any that have a
strong arc or curve. It's too much of a "taint blaster". Unfortunately,
I've found that almost all leather saddles have either too much arc, or are
difficult to get into position. I have found a number of modern saddles
that I like.

Specialized Power and Toupe saddles - 155mm width for me. These are flat
and feel stable and comfortable. However, they do work best with padded
bike shorts if the ride is long, and can start to get challenging after a
couple hours without a padded chamois.

I also have a Selle SMP "Plus" model as well. This has worked great on my
Riv; correct amount of padding, desireable shap, but OH IT'S UGLY

I revently picked up a Rivet Imogene saddle from this forum. It's a flat,
pretty wide saddle. I THINK it's working, but I"m waiting for a longer
setback seatpost before I decide for sure.

But holy hell, saddles are a litera and figurative pain in the ass until
something comes along and you ride and stop thinking about it.

Cheers!
Ben

More shifter nerd talk!

Attemped to mount the silver shifter onto the shimano pod this morning and
ran into a snag. Many of you probably know this, but if not, here's the
deal.

Here's a photo of the Shimano Pod. Thanks Park Tool!
https://www.parktool.com/assets/img/repairhelp/barendshifter44.jpg

There is a little extra half-circle of metal on the little square area
where one fits a spacer/washer. The shimano spacer fits right over it. The
standard square-hole washer does not. Riv obviously knows ths=is because
their silver pods do not have this half-circle.

The only reason I can fathom why this is there is to make the Shimano pods
not be compatible wiuth other bands of shift levers. They probably don't
want people futzing around. I believe I can dremel that half-circle off and
fit my washer, and it will also not affect the shimano performance in any
way if I want to put the Shimano shifters back on.

For now, I will remain a downtube shifter user and see if/when I go crazy ;)

[RBW] Re: Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-09-19 Thread Ben Adrian
Pointless updates because I just like talking bikes.

Ever since I rerouted my cables, my performance has been very good.
However, I've never tried any of the Suntour/Silver ratchet shifters and
I've always been curious. I found a used set here so I grabbed them. I
gently removed my rear derailleur cable, wrapped the cable and housing, and
tied it down to my rack. Then I mounted the SIlver shifter to the DT boss
an ran the a new rear cable to the RD. WOw, these are really nice. And the
direct cable run gives me the smoothest performance yet.

So now... set up the front and leave it as a DT shifter bike, or try
mounting the Silvers on my Shimano pods and do full friction bar-end?

[RBW] WTB: long setback seatpost

2022-09-13 Thread Ben Adrian
Hey All!

I've recently purchased a leather saddle that I think I'll get along with.
However, like most leather saddles, I'll need a bit more setback to really
get my sit bones into the right place.

The plan is to get the Velo-Orange Grand Cru 30mm setback post. I can find
one for about $50 or so. However, before I buy a new piece of gear, I
always like to look for something second-hand. Sometimes I can even find
something nicer for about the same price as a new unit.

So, does anyone have a 27.2, 30mm or longer setback post they might be
selling?
Thanks!
Ben

[RBW] Re: FS - Riv Bits - Silver 1 Shifters, Sun/SRAM Dynamo Wheel, Compass Snoqualmie Pass Tires, Rivet Saddle

2022-09-11 Thread Ben Adrian
I bought the saddle and shifters from Huston and I just wanted to drop a
note here. His pacing job was the BEST packing job of used gear that I have
ever received (bike or guitar). Fully reccommend him for transactions.
Thanks Huston!

 Greetings,

I'm in the process of overhauling a new-to-me Rivendell and have some
Riv (or Riv-ish) items for sale. Photos are available here

 .

 1. Rivendell Silver 1 Shifters. Shift levers are very clean.
Attachment hardware shows a bit more wear. Does not include bar end
 pods;
however, the stop washers that attach to the downtube bosses are included.
Plastic washers are not cracked (as they often are). $50.00 shipped to
 CONUS.

 2. Dynamo Wheel. 700c dynamo wheel with Sun CR18 36h rim. The hub is
a SRAM I-Light D7 series. For a used wheel, the hub is quite clean. Rim
shows a bit of wear. Includes QR skewer. This would be a good wheel for
giving dynamo lighting a whirl. $75.00 plus shipping. Box is 26x26x7.

 3. Compass/Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass tires (2). 700c x 44. Standard
casing. Lightly used. Rear tire shows a little tread wear; front tire
shows minimal wear. The tires were run with tubes, so they are clean on
the inside. $85.00 shipped to CONUS.

 4. Rivet "The Imogene" saddle. Chrome rails. Used but clean with a
few light marks on the leather. These have a listed width of 175mm. $100
 shipped to CONUS.

Thanks for looking. Please send a PM if you are interested. I will
update the list as items are sold.

Could a small cable channel be cut with something like a dremel? I've never
used these brakes, so I"m not sure if this is a possible modification.

Cheers!

 Hi Folks,

I have a 2012 Sam that uses Tektro R559 side pull canti's with a square
"smush" style anchor bolt for the brake cable. (See picture)

Trouble is I generally fray or smush the brake cable more than I'd
like. Can one replace these with something that has a little bit more of a
"pocket" for the cable, so I can adjust as the pads wear with less
 smushing/fraying?

 Something like this-
 https://www.amazon.com/Brake-Part-Anchor-Bolt-Tektro/dp/B0047MCLUE

Maybe the answer is I get one of those 'third hand' brake tools to
really seat it in there better when installing...

 Thanks for any help,

 Tim

I actually am running 42cm highway one bars. I'm not sure what you mean by
more run out. However, I'm thinking maybe I can do something like start to
run the housing out of the bar tape once the bar starts to curve upward.
This might make the shifter cables run upward out of the bars rather than
forward?

This is a fantastic point. Shimano STIs on a set of 42cm wide bars with a
loaded front basket seems like a bad idea.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Scene report!

To the Riv out for an urban cruise today. Shifting was still terrible. I
did some tests while riding where I just leaned over and pulled on the
shifting cables between the stops and the bottom bracket. The shifting was
really smooth. So it must be the cable going through the handlebar bends
while under load/tension. Around the circle I continue to go...

[RBW] Re: Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-08-25 Thread Ben Adrian
I love all the replies and knowledge here. It's pretty fun.

I did a little test. I put my RD in the biggest cog. I then shifted all the
way down to the smallest cog without pedaling to put slack in the cable.
Then I pulled the cable tight at the downtube. Then I shifted back up to
the biggest cassette without any derailleur spring tension in the way. It
actually felt pretty smooth. I never did this test BEFORE this routing, so
I have no control, though.

I will say that just a couple days before I ran new cable that I put a
derailleur hangar extender on the rear so I could go up to a 32t rear cog
with my Ultegra 6500 derailleur. It works fine, but I wonder if some of the
shifting resistance is more about making larger cog jumps and running my
derailleur out of spec, and not entirely cable friction. Also, I've been
running the bike in indexed mode.

So, step 1 is to go to friction mode and hang out on the smaller side of
the cassette; see if it feels any easier. If so I'll have to figure out
where to go. If not...
Step 2, try the long floppy cable thing.
Step 3. consider Tiagra 4703 and a 4700/5800/6800 long rear derailleur. I
have a 2x10 4700 setup on a budget carbon road bike and it was actually
pretty good. It looks like they have a 3x10 lever setup. I know that RD can
handle a 34, shifts smoothly, and is easy to set-up. Plus a 10s cassette
will still fit my older wheels.

Or I just go back to a high end, ratchet, downtube shifter and learn to
love it ;) Keep this circle going!

By no means should this kill the conversation, though. Chat away!

Cheers!

[RBW] Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-08-24 Thread Ben Adrian
Hey all! Just looking for some gear chat.

I have a Rambouillet with drop bars. I'm finally getting everything
comfortable, but I've been around the block with my shifters.

My bike came with 8 speed bar end shifters. However, when I did my first
configuration I mounted them on the downtube. They worked great. It was
kind of a bummer to reach down, but I went with it because I loved the
simplicity and getting the cables off the handlebars.

After a while I decided to put them back in the bar ends. I had previously
used bar ends for a long time, so it felt like home. However, I have a
front Mark's rack with a basket and the derailleur cables were always
getting in the way of the front stuff.

So I just ran the cables fully under the bar tape and that install works
great to get stuff out of the way, but now my shifting performance is
pretty bad from the twisty cable runs; much worse than any other
configurations.

So, nothing is really broken, but I know it can be better. Wondering if I
should try again with a new take on the "not under tape" routing. Or try
downtube again? Or just go nuts and look for a used STI system?

Let's chat!
Ben

[RBW] Re: Your Road or Road-ish Riv Rubber Radius (tire width)

Just watched your assembly video again, Eric, and I see it's a 7cm. Love
the videos, especially as eye candy to see different build configurations
close up.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Your Road or Road-ish Riv Rubber Radius (tire width)

2022-08-11 Thread Ben Adrian
I just put the 700 x 35 Rene Herse slicks back on my Rambouillet. I had
them on before, but the wider tire and a loaded front rack started to feel
weird. Plus, I wanted to put on fenders and the fenders I have were too
small for 35s. Anyway, I'm shifting the load to the rear and I've removed
the fenders, so I put the 35s back on. What a fantastic ride now.

I just got some 700 x 44 tires like yours above for my Salsa Warbird. I've
not had a chance to do a serious ride on them, but they look like they are
going to be very nice.

Also, what's the stem length on your Hillborne?

Cheers!

[RBW] FS: Thomson Elite Setback Seatpost Silver 27.2 x 250mm

2022-08-01 Thread Ben Adrian
Thomson Elite Setback Seatpost Silver 27.2 x 250mm

A few insertion marks, but still in very good shape.

I used this on my Rambouillet and, for me, I couldn't get it low enough
with the saddle that I ended up using/ The setback area should run into the
seat tube. However, with other saddles that weren't as tall, it worked
great. I'm happy yo take measurements for people.

[RBW] For Sale: Shimano Dura Ace 11 Speed bar end shifters

2022-07-12 Thread Ben Adrian
Dura Ace 2/3 x 11 bar end / tri / time trial shifters. Left friction. Right
is index only. should work with 5800, 6800, 7000, 8000 and whatever number
Dura Ace called their 11 speed Rear Derailleurs. It will also work with
Tiagra 4700 RD if paired with an 11 speed cassette.

I got this crazy idea to run an 11 speed setup on my Riv. I started buying
parts. After doing some reconfigurations, I have decided to go in another
direction.

I got these used and never installed them. Shifters, original box, one
housing, one cable, cable stops, other misc. stuff. It's what I got from
the previous seller.

[RBW] Re: Front Rack for Rambouillet

2022-07-10 Thread Ben Adrian
I keep remembering this post and I hate to admit how much it probably
applies to me. It feels so much more alive whenever I ride the bike without
the front rack. I really want this to be my "utility" bike. For instance, I
went and picked up some sushi tonight, and I needed a flat area to keep the
food upright and stable. Something on the front just seems so much more
convenient for me. I usually leave my bag on all the time and it's always
getting used.

Perhaps I just need some kind of larger rear bag for my everyday stuff;
tools, lock, emergency road snacks, light jackets, etc. Then I keep an
empty front rack and only bungee stuff to it when the rear is not an
option?

It's that or get a different bike that likes a front load more.

Cheers!
Ben

[RBW] FS: Velo Orange Randonneur Rack and Suntour shifters

2022-06-16 Thread Ben Adrian
*Older Velo Orange Randonneur Rack with separate 1" decaleur.*

This shows some wear, but works fine. Mounts with included P clamps or to
fork braze ons.

Notice, the mount for the brake/fork crown has been cut. Also, it's not a
diving board style, but rather is welded to the rack frame. Also, I have to
squeeze the decaleur mount slightly to put the mount onto the receiver. I
don't know if this is a standard thing or just some weirdness with this
unit. It's never been a bother for me though. I just want to be fully clear
of what is being sold.

$80 shipped for the set.

*Suntour Friction Shifters*

In excellent shape. They look super cool to me. True friction; no indexing,
no power ratchet. I went back to my bar end shifters.

$20 shipped

Re: [RBW] Riv Enthusiast at Midnight Oil show

2022-06-09 Thread Ben Adrian
Yes, it's a delight to be able to ride to most shows in Los Angeles. My
wife and I will ride to see the symphony at Disney Hall, many concerts at
the Hollywood Bowl, and pretty much everywhere in between. I've discovered
many well hidden or well protected bike racks. Outside the Midnight Oil
show was a little sketchy, but we had three locks between two bikes.
Luckily everything was still there when we left.

Now, to organize the So Cal Rivendell "Owners and Appreciators" ride ;)

[RBW] Re: Fender Wobble

2022-05-18 Thread Ben Adrian

I finally got around to taking the fenders and front rack/bag off of my
bike. I only had time for a short ride, but it does seem to have a
significant change of feel. I never though that it handled poorly with the
front rack. The best way to put it is that maybe the bike seems "sleepy"
with the front rack and bag. One thing I did notice is that it really wants
to be a wheelie machine without the front rack. My front wheel kept coming
up when climbing steep hills.

Tonight I have a longer ride planned with a friend. We'll see how it does
with a non-trivial distance.

Cheers!

 Hey all!

I have SKS Fenders on my Ram. I live in L.A., so I rarely need them.
Still, there are puddles of gross water, damp mornings, and smatterings of
rain, so I really appreciate them when I need them and I leave them on.
Now, they do move a bit when riding. I'll look down and see them moving
from bumps and wind. I know they're not the best fenders and I'm okay with
 that.

There's something else that happens on this bike. When cornering, I
sometimes feel it getting a little noodle-y. There is a wobble, and not
 all
the time. It never feel dangerous, but it is a bit disheartening and
 weird.
I'm wondering of the lateral wobble of the fenders is also giving a wobble
to the cornering sometimes. Perhaps it's something else, and the wiggling
 fenders are becoming the scapegoat.

So, anyone else have anything like this happen? My instinct is to just
take them off and see if it happens again. I guess the result would be the
same either way; it's the old fenders so I buy nicer fenders because I
 like
having them, or it is the fenders, I fix it with the fenders off and I buy
nicer fenders because I like having them.

 Cheers!
 Ben

Re: [RBW] Re: Which rims did Rivendell endorse in the early days?

2022-04-12 Thread Ben Adrian
I scored a set of Mavic Open Pro rims for free when buying another wheelset
on Craigslist. The guy just threw them in.
I built them up with some Ultegra 6500 hubs and it's a strong,
straightforward, and reasonable light wheel set that is adjustable and
rebuildable with standard tools.
I don't know if they were "riv endorsed", but they fit the spirit of Riv as
I believe in it; graceful and durable bikes that can be worked on for years
and built with industry standard parts that cab be rebuilt or replaced
indefinitely.

Re: [RBW] Fender Wobble

2022-04-12 Thread Ben Adrian
Hey all! Thanks for all the advice so far. When I see Fender wobble my
brain goes more to a telecaster with a Bigsby... not my bike!
Here are responses to questions and comments.

At one point my rear wheel went out of true. I trued it and found one spoke
was totally slack. I though that would fix it, but no. I will go back and
check spoke tension. Just because it's straight doesn't mean there's not a
tension problem.

I've had strap and clamp on handlebar bags. It has wobbled with those. I
have done very few rides with nothing on the bike. I will remove fenders
and racks and all bags and go do some cornering; see if I can make the
problem happen with fewer variables.

I've checked headset. Will re-check skewers and wheel tightness. Also, will
check hub bearings for play.

I don't have a lot of fender experience. These SKS fenders came used with
the bike. I've watched videos and I'm pretty handy mechanically. The struts
have flex in them that is not very damped. I can whack the fender laterally
with my hand and it will oscillate for about 1-2seconds. It's like a fast
pendulum swaying from the mounting points.

I just went to the garage to check, and there's a crack in the rear fender
on the left lower strut. Maybe this is it. It can flex to hit the tire, and
it might be bouncing against the wheel as I turn. Maybe it's been a broken
fender all along.

It's not supposed to rain for a while. Off with the fenders soon for
testing!

Cheers!
Ben

[RBW] Fender Wobble

2022-04-11 Thread Ben Adrian
Hey all!

I have SKS Fenders on my Ram. I live in L.A., so I rarely need them. Still,
there are puddles of gross water, damp mornings, and smatterings of rain,
so I really appreciate them when I need them and I leave them on. Now, they
do move a bit when riding. I'll look down and see them moving from bumps
and wind. I know they're not the best fenders and I'm okay with that.

There's something else that happens on this bike. When cornering, I
sometimes feel it getting a little noodle-y. There is a wobble, and not all
the time. It never feel dangerous, but it is a bit disheartening and weird.
I'm wondering of the lateral wobble of the fenders is also giving a wobble
to the cornering sometimes. Perhaps it's something else, and the wiggling
fenders are becoming the scapegoat.

So, anyone else have anything like this happen? My instinct is to just take
them off and see if it happens again. I guess the result would be the same
either way; it's the old fenders so I buy nicer fenders because I like
having them, or it is the fenders, I fix it with the fenders off and I buy
nicer fenders because I like having them.

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Items for sale to help a friend

2022-03-24 Thread Ben Adrian
Hey Everyone!
I bought the Carradice Keswick bag from Joe, but it's not working out for
me. It sits a little high on the handlebars for my taste. I have it on drop
bars. It might be better for flat or riser bars.
It's in fantastic shape and includes a shoulder strap, the bottom light
mount, and and two Klickfix mounts.
$80 and I'll split actual shipping.
No photos yet, but it's Black and looks just like the one on the website.

Re: [RBW] How do you track mileage?

2022-03-02 Thread Ben Adrian

Hey Joe and all!

I just use a standard GPS bike computer and have it set to auto-load it
to both Strava and RIdeWithGPS.

I do al kinda of riding on all kinds of bikes; Rivendell cruising,
gravel rides, club road rides, commuting and utilitarian riding. My
carbon gravel/road bike has a power meter, speed sensor, and cadence
sensor. Plus, I will wear a heart rate monitor. I don't live and die by
these numbers, but the Garmin keeps track and lets me know how my
fitness is holding up. I don't need those sensors when I ride my other
bikes, though, and the Garmin just does fine on GPS alone. Plus, I'm a
map nerd and I love having everythign available without having to get my
phone out.

I know the Riv ethos and GPS computers are sometimes at odds. I've heard
of plenty of people who start the ride on their computer and just toss
it in their handlebar bag. It's just collecting the data for later use.

My Garmin has "profiles" I can customize like road, mountain, gravel,
rando, commuting, etc. The main screen of my commuting profile is just
map, speed, and distance. When I want to have a worry free ride, I don't
need to see any performance data. It's pretty nice. When I do a quick
pre-work, morning ride for exercise, I can see heart rate and power and
make sure I push myself the right about in the short time available.

Anyway, Joe, if you ever want to do a ride around our neighborhood, talk
music gear, bikes, and GPS computers, let me know. I think Ron Frazell
and Hugh Smitham? are close-ish too? L.A. Riv List meetup?

? I’m curious what methods people are using.

I’ve occasionally tracked with a GPS watch only to never look back at the data,
let alone tally up a cumulative mileage count. I mostly ride without tracking
as it makes it less about the stats and more about the ride. But it would be
fun to know how much I rode in a year, over the course of owning a bike, etc. I
wish I knew how many miles are on the first Brooks saddle that I bought 15 or
so years ago.

I was inspired by Pam’s post about 63,000 miles on a bike and Rapid Rise RD.
How did you come up with that number?! How does everyone else who keeps track
keep track?

Re: [RBW] Re: If a group of people may want to put an order in to Blue Lug

2022-02-16 Thread Ben Adrian
I was looking to do an order for some DT shifters, lights, bar tape, and
a front rack. Shipping was $80. While still kind of a good deal for air
freight from Japan, it's still much more that we Americans are used to
paying. I took out the front rack and the shipping went down to $40.

So, I'd be down to do a group order, especially for SoCal friends. Also,
I'm interested in your front racks and down tube shifters that you may
have for sale ;)

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Re: Heterodoxy — reconciling RBW with the mainstream

2022-02-11 Thread Ben Adrian

Okay, I'll jump in.

We're all on a bike mailing list specializing in once specific brand and
type of bikes. Granted, they are more practical bikes than specialist
bikes, but we're all still bike nerds here. I have a carbon gravel/road
bike, a steel commuter and errand bike, and my Riv as my "zippy, do
whatever" bike.

Now, in general, most people who are bike nerds tend to specialize in
one or more specific types of riding; MTB, gravel, high performance
road, randonneuring, etc. With bike nerdery come riding nerdery, I
suppose. I can be extreme in both bike/component choice and riding
choice. And while this is extreme in performance, it's kind of the
mainstream for "people really into bikes."

Then, there are people who are kind of average, utilitarian riders.
They're generally not bike nerds. My wife has an ebike for commuting,
errands, and the occasional fun ride. It's like a Toyota Corolla... but
a bike. The brand and the specs don't really matter so long as it's
reliable and functional.

However, Riv bike owners/riders seems to appreciate both the
practicality and utilitarian nature of these bikes, AND the gear head,
bicycle craft, nice component nature of bikes. It's an uncommon
crossover, and it's something I find I have to describe to both by
extreme cycling friends AND my non-cycling friends who might just have
their "errand bike."

But it's fun! I love maintaining my Riv. I love the classic look of my
bike. I love being able to fix and maintain everything with a pretty
basic tool set. I love the fact that I can find really nice parts for
usually pretty cheap because they're not the latest modern standard. I
love the joy of riding my very nice bike in everyday situations.

For me, I kind of enjoy playing around with the Riv trends because they
usually work well. Here's how I've come to explain the Riv culture to
people who aren't familiar. Riv bikes tend to take the best parts of
practical bike design from the 70s, 80's and 90's and put them all
together on one classic looking bike.

Cheers!
Ben
P.S. L.A. folks, we should all try to do a meetup soon-ish!

Hey Joe

I’ll take the carradice bag if it’s still available. I live in Echo Park so
maybe I can just pick it up sometime? Happy to pay right away, though.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Velotaxonomy: What are we, anyway?

2022-01-27 Thread Ben Adrian
We're Fun-bikers. Fun-cyclists? I don't know. We live in a weird world
where most of us love the bikes and the gear and the experience of riding,
but maybe we don't want to go super hard or super-extreme.

I posted a photo of a ride on the Rivendellicious facebook group. A guy on
the group recognized exactly where I was and we started chatting. Now we go
for riv-style rides once or twice a month.

Having said all this, I still find myself in bicycle subgenres all the
time. I have a friend with whom I do a lot of gravel riding and go on
off-road adventures. I do lycra road riding with an organized club. I have
some friends who ride for exercise and just want to do high intensity, 45
minute morning rides. I have musician friends that ride bikes and we
sometimes do rides just to hang out. I have friends from the Rivendell
world. I'd love to pull some of these groups together, but realistically
it's just hard to make the different styles come together. A lot of times
I'll just send a ride invite to a bunch of friends, and then I tailor the
ride and choose my bike based on who says yes ;)

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs Downtube

2021-12-29 Thread Ben Adrian
I love the idea of downtube shifters; simplicity, good looks, easy packing,
disassembly, and repair, etc. However, as soon as I'm off road, bar-end
shifters become much nicer and down tube is a giant pain.

Right now, I have downtube shifters on my Ram. However, I'm still getting
my bars and stem length set up. Once I have a setup that I like, I might
move my shifters. I think the plan is to just use DTs until they drive me
crazy... then I'll switch ;)

[RBW] Re: Looking for Rim Advice

2021-12-05 Thread Ben Adrian
I'm a pretty handy home mechanic and have never had tire mounting problems
until now.
I've had fine luck with Bontrager, Reynolds, DT 411, DT Spline, WTB,
Pacenti, HED, etc.

This DT 1.1 rim seems to have almost no center channel it's pretty much
straight across. I've never seen anything like it. General internet chatter
seems to mention the difficulty of mounting tires on these 1.1 rims. The
Open Pro is difficult, but doable. The DT seems to have problems with any
tires that are made to tubeless compatible specs.

My main concern is just being stranded. When I got the bike it took two
tire levers and a screwdriver to remove the Schwalbe tires that came on it.
I know that was bad form, but I had no other options at the moment. If I
got a front flat even with the tires I have on the rims now, I still don't
think I'd be able to fix it on the road. To further the story, I then put
those Schwalbe tires right on my Pacenti Forza rims by hand and with zero
problems.

My only other thought is to check overall tension of the wheel. I've
radially trued many wheels. Maybe it just needs to be pulled in all
around... which also seems like a bad idea.

Anyway, that's my story.
Thanks everyone.
Ben

[RBW] Looking for Rim Advice

2021-11-29 Thread Ben Adrian
Hey all!

I recently picked up a Rambouillet. I'm really liking it except for the
rims. It has an Open Pro and a DT RR 1.1. The DT especially is VERY
difficult to mount and unmount tires. Mainly, though, I'd just like to run
35mm tires.

I really like the hubs, and I've built wheels before. I'm looking for rims
that I can easily swap out. Not switching spokes is a plus. Right now it
seems like Velocity A23 and Mavic A316 both have the same ERD, so I should
be able to just swap them on. Any reviews, pros/cons of these rims. Also,
is there anything else I should check out?

Cheers!
Ben
