[RBW] FS: Pedals, Nitto Stuff, Etc.

2013-01-31 Thread Blindrobert
I'm cleaning out the closet here's a few things for you, please email me
for pics of anything you might be interested in. Lots of references and
past sales, I won't oversell anything and describe my bits accurately.

Nitto R-50 saddlebag quick release: Brand new in bag, never used or
mounted. This lets you remove your saddlebag quickly and easily and bring
it with you. Compatible with bags that have loops for saddles such as
Carradice, Sackville, Berthoud, etc... $80 delivered to any USA address.

MKS touring pedals with Soma double gate metal toeclips (designed for
single leather strap) and Soma straps. Used, but tons of life left in all
the components, the bearings turn smoothly and don't feel gritty, the
rivets on the toe clips are showing tiny spots of surface rust, but it's
truly superficial, leather straps are a little worn, but not dryrotted or
worn out by any means. $30 delivered to any USA address

MKS touring pedals with MKS large size half clips attached. Touring pedals
are used but tons of life left in them, bearings still turn smoothly and
easily with no gritty feeling. The half-clips are the "deep" model with
silver finish and leather pads, leather pads are still soft and stitching
is intact, they are a little dirty looking but nothing unusual for a pedal
that has been lightly used and well-cared for. These are great for riding
with hiking boots. $30 delivered to any USA address

SRAM rival 10 speed cassette, brand new in box, never used, never mounted.
Box is a little mashed but still intact and the cassette is spiffy new.
Model is OG-1070 11-25 Open Glide. SRAM and Shimano compatible. $35
delivered to any USA address.

Happy riding everyone, thanks for looking. You can reach me at roberto
(dot) cipriano (at) gmail (dot) com.

[RBW] Re: FS: 63cm A. Homer Hilsen (AHH) with S&S Couplers Frame/Fork or complete bike

2012-10-13 Thread Blindrobert
It took a little bit of fiddling with both the rack height and the decaleur
- also I bought the tallest version of the Berthoud bag. Maybe you got a
shorter one? It's better looking to go with the taller bag, IMHO, rather
than have the rack jacked way up above the fender or the top of the bag way
down below the flats of the bar.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Bombadil, 60cm Fully-Built

2012-08-25 Thread Blindrobert
Thanks for posting that Matt.

My PBH is 90.5 to 91 depending on what time of day I measure. There's a
lot of overlap in sizing as you can see from the list Matt posted, the
slightly sloping TT makes these pretty adaptable bikes, fit-wise.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Bombadil, 60cm Fully-Built

2012-08-10 Thread Blindrobert
I have decided to sell my Rivendell Bombadil. This is the original model
with parallel top tubes in the 60cm size. It is fully built with premium
components:

   - Shimano 9 speed barcons
   - Shamano XT rear derailleur, rapid rise
   - IRD front derailleur, triple
   - Sugino XD triple crankset with 170mm arms
   - Nitto Technomic Stem
   - Nitto Noodle Bar, yellow cloth bar tape tied with hemp twine and
shellacked with amber dewaxed shellac (by me)
   - Velo Orange hammered fenders
   - Phil Wood front and rear hubs laced 3-cross to 40 spoke Velocity Dyad
rims. Silver Salsa quick release skewers. Super sturdy for touring or
   larger riders!
   - Tubus racks, front and rear
   - Tektro CR720 cantilever brakes
   - Tektro brake levers with quick release buttons and black rubber hoods
   - Phil Wood Bottom Bracket
   - Schwalbe Marathon Extreme 35mm tires

I am asking $3,000K for the bike packed and delivered in the lower 48
states, I would prefer payment by some means other than paypal and can give
you lots of references for both bike and camera sales. I am open to
reasonable offers and promise not to be offended if you promise in return
not to be offended if I decline.

There are no issues at all with this bike, everything works perfectly - the
chain is getting old and could stand to be replaced but that's about it.
Very clean, no crashes - maybe a few smudges of dirt in the pictures,
fenders have a few small dings in them from normal wear and tear. Never
crashed or traumatized - this is a great bicycle! I am the original owner
and bought it from Rivendell myself.

That's the price of the new frame alone at Rivendell - you are basically
getting a high-quality build for free in this deal. You can see pictures
of the actual bike and build here:

[RBW] Austin, TX - who owns the Atlantis in East Cesar Chavez?

2012-06-11 Thread Blindrobert
I was walking down Willow Street yesterday when somebody whizzed by on
a nicely decked out Atlantis (I think it was an Atlantis - the color
was right). In any case, if you are in the neighborhood we'd love to
meet up for a ride or just to geek out on bikes a little bit.

[RBW] Custom Hampsten / Independent Fabrication rando bike for sale

2012-05-25 Thread Blindrobert
I had this bike custom built and simply haven't ridden it. It has less
than 50 miles on it. Here are the details:

Custom Strada Bianca road bike designed by Hampsten Cycles (Andy
Hampsten was the first American to win the Giro, as many of you
probably know.) and built by Independent Fabrication. Designed for
randonneuring - fast paced, comfortable, long distance riding. Great
for club rides or exploring or just riding around - this bike does it
all.

The details:

Steel tubing mix of True Temper and Reynolds 853

Seat tube: 61.5cm (center to center), 63.0cm (center to top)
Top tube: 58.5cm (center to center)
Chain stays: 42.5cm
Rear spacing 130mm (road bike standard)
30mm headtube extension for a more comfortable, upright riding
position
Custom steel fork with threadless steel steer tube (tube has been left
long so you can adjust it down to fit you)

Fully built with premium components including:
Ritchey WCS bar and Thomson stem
Chris King pewter color threadless headset
Thomson Elite seat post
Black Brooks Team Pro saddle with hammered copper rivets
Dura ace brake/shift levers (10 speed)
10 speed rear cassette (I think it's a SRAM)
Shimano compact double front crank with oversize outboard bearing
bottom bracket
Dura Ace 10 speed rear derailleur
FSA front derailleur (more reliable than Shimano for the compact
crank)
Phil Wood front and rear hubs (rear takes shimano compatible
cassettes), 36 spokes laced 3-cross to Mavic Open Sport rims (I know -
you are thinking Open Pro's are better, but the Open Sport is a little
bit wider which allows you to ride a fatter, more comfortable, tire.
Honjo polished stainless fenders attached with Sheldon's fender nuts
for easy removal on fast, dry days.
Tektro long reach brakes go around the fenders and also allow for
fatter tires!
Brand new Rivendell Ruffy-Tuffy 28mm tires fit under the fenders with
tons of clearance
Black Velox bar plugs
Black cork bar tape tied off with black hemp twine
Cateye Mity8 computer, tells you all the important stuff
No pedals
2 silver Ciussi stainless steel bottle cages

This is a first-rate bicycle in every respect. I simply have too many
and my house is small. This bike is perfect for fast paced club rides
or long distance rides, it will excel on pavement, cinder tracks, bike
paths, rail-to-trails, or simply riding around town or campus. There
are braze on's for fenders and two water bottles. The intention was to
use a classic randonneuring saddle bag like the Carradice Nelson with
a bagman support. I was going for a classic fit so the size is a
little large and was intended to show just a fistfull of seatpost
(think Rivendell meets Indy Fab). Bike is in amazing condition showing
little to no wear, it should last a lifetime. It will fit 28mm tires
with the fenders and 32 or 35mm tires without fenders. This is a great
bike and I'd like to find it a good home.

Charcoal metallic with cream filled windows on the lugged fork. Frame
is TIG welded in the ultra-clean IF style.

Offered at $3000, I have over $5K into this bike - the price is a
steal, but reasonable offers will be politely considered: I promise
not to be offended if you promise not to get upset if I decline.
Recent pictures can be seen here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/sets/72157629896234412/

Thanks for looking, keep the rubber side down!

[RBW] Re: Pedal strike and platform pedals

2012-05-19 Thread Blindrobert
I wouldn't worry about it. If you're riding a Riv you probably aren't
racing...don't pedal through the corners and keep your outside crank
in the down position if you are turning agressively at high speed (you
should do that regardless of what pedal you are using). I've used the
MKS touring pedal on my AHH and Bombadil for years and never had a
problem. I have done long tours, everyday riding around town, fast-
paced but casual group rides. It's just not an issue. It's not an
issue on my Fraces or Waterford fixed gear bikes either - same setup:
MKS touring pedals with clips and straps.

A few months ago I put a pair of grip kings on my AHH and haven't had
any problem with that pedal either. I'm sure you could make the pedal
strike if you wanted, but it would be the result of poor riding
judgement rather than a shortcoming of the equipment. Platforms=one
less obstacle to getting on your bike and riding it. I say go for
it! Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-06 Thread Blindrobert
Well - I wouldn't buy a used bike for 75% of retail. The flip side of
your argument is that I would rather spend the extra couple-hundred
dollars and get the full warranty and the excitement of a brand new
bike. At $2800 your competition is going to be people looking at
things like a brand new Salsa or Surly, decked out new for under or
around $2000.

Yes, if you are prepared to wait, you can probably get closer to your
asking price. Though, as others have pointed out you will have to be
able to wait for the right person to come along.  I wouldn't sell it;
if you still like the bike and still plan to ride it when you return
then keep it.

Don't sell it on eBay. Also, keep in mind that listing it in other
forums or sale boards isn't a mutually exclusive proposition. List it
here, list it on velospace, list in on CL, list it anywhere you can
that's free. And yes - take great pictures!

Good luck with the sale and with your travels.

[RBW] Re: Was your RIV sizing right on?

2012-05-03 Thread Blindrobert
Spot on - for two different geometries. I have an AHH and a Bombadil
- followed their advice on both and it was exactly right both times.
In fact they are more comfortable than my custom road bike. I would
also follow their advice on measuring your PBH. Take it three or four
times and average the results...and really jam that book/ruler/
whatever up there tight against the pubic bone.

haha. The name goes back to my early college days and the first

obsessed with all the blind blues guys - blind lemon, blind blake,

to keep the other one open when I'm riding bikes. Especially in
traffic.

[RBW] FS: One of two Rivendell bikes: A Homer Hilsen (63cm) or Bombadil (60cm)

2012-04-14 Thread Blindrobert
I have two Rivendell bikes that I love. They are both superb and fit
me perfectly, but I'm moving and consolidating and it occurs to me
that maybe 8 bikes is more than one guy really needs.

So - whichever sells first is the one I will get rid of. General
info: both frames are in excellent condition with a little riding wear
and the usual tiny paint nicks from gravel and careful use, no
crashes. If you are looking for collector mint, these aren't the
right ones, but if you are looking for solid, loved, lightly used, and
well-maintained bikes, please read on. Your choice for $3K delivered
east of the Mississippi - if you are elsewhere we can work out
something reasonable. Please email me for pics: roberto (dot)
cipriano (at) gmail (dot) com.

63cm A Homer Hilsen in the classic blue/cream paint. I had the S&S
couplers installed after-market by Bilenky for about $1K including the
repaint which is flawlessly matched, I am the original owner. Sugino
triple crank, 9 speed rear casette, Silver downtube shifters,
shellacked cloth bar tape, Tektro long reaach side-pull calipers, VO
hammer fenders, Nitto Noodle bar (I think it's 42 wide), no pedals,
and the spare wheel on the rack in the rear is not included! Wheels
are Phil Wood rear hub 36 holes on Velocity O/C rim, front hub is
Schmidt Dyno hub 36 hole on matching Velocity rim to rear, but not O/C
since it's in the front! Includes a Schmidt E6 light and bracket,
Brooks sprung saddle in brown that shows a little wear, but has years
of life in it and has been maintained regularly with proofide,
Schwalbe 32mm tires, wheels built by Peter White Cycles. Phil Wood
BB.

60cm Bombadil - built like a serious touring bike - last of the
parallel top tubes, I am the original owner!!! Phil Wood front and
rear hubs, with 40 spokes laced to Velocity Dyad rims, VO hammered
fenders, Sugino Triple crankset, Phil BB, shimano 9 speed rear
derailleur and casette with Shimano barcons, shellacked cloth bar
tape, Nitto noodle bar (I think it's 42 wide), Schwalbe marathon
tires, Brooks B17 special (copper rivets) saddle, shows a little wear
but has been maintained with proofide. Clear coat paint finish shows
the metal construction and brazing underneath - it's gorgeous and it's
not rusting. I think that whole controversy was a red herring
anyway. Tubus racks NOT included in price, but available for extra.

[RBW] FS: 63cm A. Homer Hilsen (AHH) with S&S Couplers Frame/Fork or complete bike

2011-08-01 Thread Blindrobert
I have an AHH 63cm AHH with S&S couplers installed by Bilenky. Frame
is in excellent shape - low miles - excellent paint, a few spots show
use in the usual places, but no dents and no major scratches, just
normal wear and tear for a few year old bike.

Standard AHH blue paint was perfectly matched, blended and clearcoated
by Bilenky after the retrofit, so the decals are all intact and if I
didn't know better I would think it came out of the Rivendell workshop
this way.

The only reason I am selling it: I have a lot of bikes - this one was
a holdover until I got a custom done by Curt Goodrich, which is due
later this year.

The build details: Nitto Noodle bar with cloth tape and shellac,
shimano bar end shifters (barcons), threadless stem adapter and
threadless stem for easy breakdown and packing, Shimano LX reverse
throw rear derailleur, Sugino XD2 46/34/24 triple front crank 175mm
length with self-extracting crank bolts, Ultegra Headset, Phil Wood
Bottom Bracket, Peter White built wheelset: front Schmidt Dynamo Hub
with Schmidt E6 dynamo headlight, rear phil wood road hub, front and
rear 36 spokes laced 3X to Velocity Synergy rims (Synergy OC rear for
stability, mountain bike geared cassette (the tooth count and brand
escapes me right now, but I think it's a 34t low end made by either
shimano or SRAM - I can verify if it really matters, but it's geared
right to get up the big hills and go fast enough on the flats), shift
brake cables already have the cable splitters attached. Anything I
missed, let me know!

And now the pricing:
Frame/Fork only with headset and BB: $1800 (these currently go for
$2000 and the S&S couplers with paint will run you another $1000).

Complete Bike: $3100

Shipping will be at actual cost. I will provide an estimate based on
your shipping zip - you pay that amount, if it's cheaper I will refund
your money, if it costs more I will ask you to make up the
difference...and I'm not going to quibble or make a fuss if I end up
eating a couple of bucks.

Pics on request. This is a great bike, I have traveled the world with
it including France, Spain, Borneo & Japan. It's never created a
problem, I can break it down or build it up in under and hour. I
usually travel with it in two suitcases - the hardshell case for the
frame, bars, etc. and the backpack suitcase for the wheels and
fenders. There's always enough room left over for a helmet, lots of
clothes, and a few souveniers.

I have over a decade of positive feedback on ebay, sell lots of high
end camera gear on various buy sell boards, so I have lots of history
and feedback.

Let me know if you are interested!

This picture was taken a few years ago on my tour of the Oregon and
California coastline.

[RBW] Re: Bike Life

2010-10-17 Thread Blindrobert
Great piece, Anne!

I am in Borneo now (been here a week, will be here for 103 more weeks)
with my AHH. I bought (but didn't try it out until I arrived here) a
large Sackville sack for use on my bike. My first trip I hauled, a
box of cornflakes, a tin of dutch cookies, a bag of powdered milk (a
goat just walked into my house as I was typing this), two Anker
beers (Iarge) and a bag of oatmeal. My favorite trip though has been
to the beach: two towels, a cold beer, sunscreen bottle, concert-sized
Fluke ukulele (neck sticking out the side).

Love the Sackville sack and absolutely adore my S&S coupled A Homer
Hilsen!

As to bike life - the town here is MAYBE 4000 people, the loop of road
is a little under 5 miles and for the most part is nicely paved, yet
people ride motorcycles and drive cars to do errands. To be fair,
there are a good number of cycles on the road, but it depresses me to
see so many people riding motorcycles that they have financed at 18%
to go to the beach and run other short-distance errands. Arrrgh.

A little OT, I suppose. But I enjoyed your post.

[RBW] Re: Hard Headed

LOL on the SPD's. I put platforms with toe clips on one of my bikes
last fall, and realized I rode it all the time because I didn't have
to change my shoes when I left the house. So put platforms on another
two of my bikesrode them more too...now all 11 of my 12 bikes have
platforms and cages. The only one with clipless is my racing (track)
bike.

Just keep telling yourself how much you love those SPD's!

[RBW] Sackville Large Saddlesack: lessons

2010-09-04 Thread Blindrobert
So I got the L Sackville saddlesack, I don't have the instruction
sheet with me right now (out on a trip), but I think it said to use
the interior flap for large loads. Well, you should use it for small
loads too - I had an expensive pair of sunglasses bounce out of the
back while the bag was very lightly loaded. I think the problem is
that if it isn't decently full, the top flap sits loosely over the
trunk opening and stuff can bounce over the lip of the trunk and work
it's way out by road vibrations.

It was one of those situations where you think you hear something
plasticky fall on the road while you are riding, but a quick look back
reveals nothing so you figure you ran over something...then you go to
look for your sunglasses later and realize that's what the plasticky
sound was. I had the same thing happen the next day with a book that
was back there, but I managed to retrieve the book.

In any case, it's a really nice bag, very high quality, but always use
the flap. To be fair, the Riv instructions might say that, but I
don't have them with me to verify. So, no knocking Riv or sackville -
it's a fine bag and I would recommend it highly.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Knickers

2010-09-04 Thread Blindrobert
+1. A little bit more tailored fit would be good too, they look baggy
around the crotch, judging from the photos on the site. I wear
knickers year round on my bikes, have them from Swrve, Rapha, Chrome,
Hypnotic Designs, and Chicago WIG - would be happy to add the Rivs,
but the excess fabric in the crotch and the contrasting panel turn me
off.

I think the clothing is one area where the photos on the Riv site
aren't helping them move the product. A lot of the pieces are
probably better than the photos lead you to believe. I don't think
they need full-on modeling and pro-photographer shots, but slightly
more flattering photos might be helpful.

a cargo bike that I use in all kinds of nasty weather, I routinely
carry myself (200 punds) plus over 100 pounds in the front bed, plus
the weight of the bike which must be another 35-40 pounds. No sign of

[RBW] Re: Rear Hub Advice

2010-08-29 Thread Blindrobert
Synergy O/C is 10g heavier, probably because of the eyelets. I LIKE
eyelets! But I have both Synergy and Dyad rims laced to Phil rear
touring hubs with 135 spacing. Neither has ever given me a problem, I
don't think you can go wrong, The Dyad is a tough, stiff rim but it
probably won't feel harsh if you are riding fat 32 or 35 tires.

I have owned the Synergy set for a good while longer than the Dyad set
- my guess is that the Synergy wheelset (rear in particular) will turn
out to be the more stable, longer-lived wheel given similar use/
treatment. That's just a hunch.

[RBW] Re: Rear Hub Advice

2010-08-29 Thread Blindrobert
Unless you are going to be super hard on the wheels, Dyad is probably
overkill. I would go with a Synergy OC rear rim and regular front.
The reduced spoke tension in the OC rim will make for a very stable
sturdy wheel. I have the Synergy setup on my AHH with a Schmidt
dynamo front hub and it's great. No problems at all.

I also have a phil hubset laced to Dyads (40 spokes) on my Bombadil.
I have used both for touring, the Synergy is super strong and unless
you are going to be on rough off-road trails or something I think you
are going to be fine - even loaded with a good bit of weight. I weigh
about 200 pounds and carried 35-45 pounds of gear on the 36 hole
Synergy set all the way down the west coast from Portland to SF with
no spoke breakage or truing problems. In fact, I trued that wheelset
for the first time in 2 years this morning and only had to adjust
tension in 6 spokes to get it perfect.

The blue label has thick tread and kevlar belt - these are great for
touring, the pair that's about to come off my AHH has about 2,500
miles on them with no flats! Great tires, I am just putting on
something with a heavier tread for my upcoming trip abroad and trying

[RBW] Re: FS: Rapha Waxed Cotton Cap - "Gentleman's Cap"

2010-05-27 Thread Blindrobert
I have lots of rapha clothing. I wore their wool base layer tee-
shirts and fixed shorts exclusively on several tours. They held up
remarkably well and I wouldn't use anything else in the future. The
Rapha clothes have lasted longer and remained better looking through
hard use than anything I ever bought from Castelli, Pearl Izumi,
Assos, or any other cycling clothing I can think of (though I find
that smartwool's stuff tends to last and stay fresh looking).

So yes, $150 is a lot for a pair of fixed shorts (I have 3 pairs) -
but they have held up to repeated weekly use for several years without
problems (no split seams, no pilling, no broken zippers) so to me the
long term value is well worth the up-front premium.

Of all my custom bikes, it's my favorite! And it get's the most
comment/stares of any bike I own except, perhaps my cargo bike, which
is like being in a parade every time I ride it.

http://www.bikecult.com/works/archive/09bicycles/bolognacargoRC2.html

The interaction with Josh (at Frances) is very straightforward and I
think he's a really conscientious builder and decent man, though newer
than some of the big names out there in the world of custom bikes. I
have no complaints about the workmanship at all, and he was on
schedule for the delivery of the bike (trust me, that's rare in the
world of custom bikes). My expectations were met, there were a few
little things that weren't exactly like I wanted - for instance the
old style rubber slap guard I asked for was an invented system instead
of the (formerly) standard pin for a pre-made rubber band. I have to
make a slap guard out of a strip of inner tube or other rubber when I
need one - it's not hard, just not what I expected and he wasn't
familiar with the detail for the other system. No major complaints at
all, and like I said, it's my favorite bike.

My advice to anyone getting a custom frame is to think hard about what
you want, don't sign off on production until you feel good about every
detail, including the braze ons...then DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING after the
order is signed off. It just leads to confusion and second guessing
yourself...and when you start changing things, it gets expensive and
mistakes get made.

[RBW] Re: paul's racer brakes vs cantis questions

2010-05-19 Thread Blindrobert
Wow - I guess I am the only person who had these brakes and didn't
care for them. I ordered my AHH built with the polished center mount
version of the Racer and found them to be rather problematic. Neither
the folks at Rivendell nor my LBS were able to help with the problems
I was having:

Problem number one: to remove the wheel, I had to really fight to get
the straddle wire free. When the brakes were adjusted with the pads
running close to the rim, I couldn't close them enough to get the
straddle wire out easily - even after hitting the QR button on the
brake levers.

Problem number two: the brakes wouldn't center up consistently after
braking. They would be fine 75% of the time, but every now and then
(and at least once a ride) the front or rear would spring back
unevenly, leaving one pad rubbing the rim. The folks at Rivendell
weren't able to make this happen with a pair in their shop no matter
how much they tried. I tried adjusting the spring tensions, and
finally took it in to my LBS who adjusted the brakes, but I kept
having the same problem.

I am a pretty good mechanic and routinely build up and break down my
own bikes - there aren't a lot of complicated things to adjust on a
brake so this problem was really frustrating. It went on for months
before I finally swapped them out for a pair of Silvers and sold them
at a hefty loss.

I want to close saying that I continue to be a fan of Paul Components,
I am having a touring bike built and will use their cantis on that
bike, I use their e-lever on two of my fixed gear bikes, and would
love to own one of their road cranks some day.

[RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac

2010-05-17 Thread Blindrobert
By "rides big" I just mean that it is sized more traditionally with
just a little seatpost showing and handlebars close to level with the
saddle. On a modern racing frame, I would ride a 60cm bike and in
fact the bikes I use at the velodrome are that size; this bike has a
63cm seat tube. For lights, I usually just put my petzl headlamp
around the bag and turn it on. I have lots of bikes, and I ride them
all, so moveable lights are more useful to me than fixed lights.
Though, for touring, I use a dynamo front hub and wired light.

I mostly use this bike for commuting and city riding - I do sometimes
ride up on the curves and it is comfortable for short distances. I
always wear padded gloves, so I don't need much cushioning beyond
that. The shellaced cloth tape is very grippy, even when it's wet.
The cork grips are comfortable, I suspect they would be even more
comfortable if I shortened my stem and sat a little more upright. I
tend to ride a bit aggressively in traffic and that usually means
leaning forward and pushing a pretty good clip.

[RBW] Re: Cork, Tape, and Shellac

2010-05-16 Thread Blindrobert
Patrick,

I will have to dig up the drawing for the ST angle - I am not sure off
the top of my head. I think most of the ugly threadless stem/headset
setups are because so many of the stems come in ugly finishes. I
think matte black looks (generally) terrible on bikes - especially in
the areas that I expect to see polished chrome/stainless/alloy. MORE
POLISHED THREADLESS STEMS, PLEASE!!!

The Brooks is a little forward on its rails, it's just what ended up
being comfortable - this is the first bike I have ever had moustache
bars on, so it was a bit of a guess on stem length, if I ever bother
to switch it out for a shorter one, I will slide the saddle back - for
now it's comfortable.

The curved stays are just something he (josh muir at frances cycles)
does on a lot of his bikes - I think it's just an aesthetic move. I
like them, but I doubt they do anything significant to road shock; the
fat-ish tires this bike was designed for are much more effective than
any relieved stay will ever be!

Bill - the fender was not effective once I got up over 14mph or so - I
recently changed it out to a full size satin aluminum VO fender. I
may crop it again, because I like the look - but it needs to be a good
6" or so longer than the fender in the picture. If I had it to do
over again, I would probably consider horizontal dropouts so that
removing a wheel for a tire change wasn't so hard. That said, I
haven't had a flat yet on this bike. The Rivendell Jack Brown tires
are awesome in that regard - ditto for the ruffy tuffy tires which I
have used on a few long tours and never had a flat!

Ryan - I have been riding fixed gear bikes for 14 years and my knees
have never complained (knock on wood), even my days of brakeless
riding/skidding in NYC.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone!

I took it on two trips using the S&S hardshell case with no problems,
twice to Europe, once to the west coast. As always with S&S bikes,
you have to practice the breakdown and packing, but the frame fits in
the case without any difficulty.
