[RBW] Wheel Stabilizer or no?

2014-10-31 Thread Cecily Walker
Since putting a Mark's Rack and a basket on the front of my Betty Foy, my
front handlebars flop most prodigiously (and annoyingly) when there's
anything in the basket. I'm writing to get you folks' opinions on wheel
stabilizers, or any other solutions you can think of to fight the flop.

Cheers,
Cecily

Re: [RBW] Surly after Riv

2014-10-22 Thread Cecily Walker
Surly used to use cockroaches on their website as part of their branding.
It was an instant turn-off for me. Horses for courses!

On Friday, October 17, 2014 8:26:19 AM UTC-7, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
wrote:

I find that the Surly/Riv overlap is pretty small. It seems like only 3
Surly models have a comparable Riv analog. Much of Surly's line is more or
less unique to Surly, or was unique when first introduced. That said, the
two brands share a lot of similar ideas about versatility, tire clearance,
etc. And I never thought I'd see Surly do 650B, but now they are coming out
with a 650B Straggler (down to 38 cm frames!!!).

I see a lot here and elsewhere about Surly's marketing rubbing people the
wrong way. I don't read many magazines or read many bike blogs that include
ads, so I'm missing most of their formal marketing. Somebody told me awhile
back that Riv appeals to the misfits of cycling, and I think that's right
(and not in an insulting way). Much of GP's past writing, which reflects
many Riv owners' attitudes in my experience, is about feeling alienated by
modern cycling trends, and about digging in to resist dumb things that are
done in the name of innovation or the perception of improved performance.
Surly also appeals to alienated misfits, but in a different way. The Surly
image seems to be more about having, um, unorthodox cycling needs (that are
somehow related to drinking beer under bridges and having lots of tattoos)
and designing a whole new category around it. While Riv frequently gets
criticized for being stuck in the past, Surly frequently gets criticized
for pushing products on us before we knew that we needed them. In the end,
Surly and Riv, in their own ways, pull the broader bike industry in a
 better direction.

[RBW] Happy Betty-versary to Me

2014-08-17 Thread Cecily Walker
A year ago today, I brought my Betty Foy home from the bike shop. Rizzo's a
bike I've wanted for years, and when I finally laid eyes on her in her
completed state, she took my breath away. I had so many plans for this
bike, so many adventures, and fortunately I've been able to make a few of
them come true.

My health hasn't been the greatest, and the thing that hurts me most is
that she spends a lot of days in storage, just begging to be taken outside.
But even though I haven't been able to put in as many miles as I would have
liked, every time I'm on this bike she brings a smile to my face. I've
never had a better bicycle. I never get tired of looking down and seeing a
heart staring back at me, reminding me to smile, to not take things so
seriously, to just enjoy the ride and the beautiful scenery, whether I'm on
a city street or riding out somewhere in the country.

I look forward to many more years with her, and many longer rides after
I've recovered from knee surgery. Despite the setbacks, I can honestly say
that buying a Betty Foy was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Thanks for bringing so much joy to my life Grant (and the rest of the
Rivsters). Much, much love and admiration to you.

you can. It may not come back, if some other bike or currency exchange or
whatever goes in an as yet unknown way. Typical really of most things
RBW. If you like it, get it. It might not be there next time. They'll have
good stuff for sure, just maybe not that specific item you always wanted.
Like a Romulus, a Quickbeam, etc etc.

[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)

2014-08-05 Thread Cecily Walker
Ye gods. I've had a torn meniscus (on top of all my other knee wonkery). It
isn't fun, but luckily the surgery -- if you go that route -- is
outpatient, and you should be riding again in about 3-4 weeks after
surgery.

Well, pain hasn't subsided after all this time so I went to the doctor.
The tentative diagnosis is a torn meniscus. MRI tomorrow morning and an
appointment with a sports medicine MD to determine whether I should do PT

Over the weekend I talked with Vince at Riv about saddle height. I checked
my saddle height and it was maybe a half-inch *high* after all my afore
mentioned fiddling around. Unknown if this was the culprit or exasperated
 an existing condition.

I should add that decades of backing up a touring motorcycle from a riding
position took its toll as well. (Black 1973 BMW R75/5 with a toaster tank

Anyway, keep y'all posted as I know more. In the meantime, still off the

[RBW] Re: Somewhat OT: Advice about basic Kindle versus Kindle Fire

2014-08-05 Thread Cecily Walker
I don't have a Kindle, but I do have a Kobo Aura (similar to the Kindle's
Paperwhite, but Canadian). Even though I have an iPad Mini, I keep the Kobo
around for longer reading sessions. It's distraction free, there is no
glare when reading in direct sunlight, and the light weight is so much
easier on my achy wrists than even the very light iPad.

Even when using the Aura's built-in light, I can go about a month between
charges. More if I remember to shut it off instead of just putting it to
sleep. I imagine the Kindle has similar results.

You can read free Project Gutenberg titles on a Kindle by going to
m.gutenberg.org from the Kindle, or by downloading the files to your
computer and transferring them to the Kindle using a USB cable.

You *can* use it for Gmail, but I'm not sure you *should*. The processor
and memory in dedicated eBook readers make them poor choices for email,
except in the most extreme circumstances. If you have a smartphone, use
that instead.

I'm inclined toward the basic Kindle at $70 since I want it very largely
for reading and because it is light (and cheap). But a couple of questions
for those of you who have used such things.

 1. Will the basic Kindle download and display books from The Gutenberg
Project and other such sites? (I don't order from Apple, so it needn't
 handle their products.)

 2. Can one read and send gmail on the basic Kindle?

 3. How long in reality does the battery hold a charge on average with
daily use of, say 3 hours?

 I'll welcome other practical comments.

Bike content: I'd take it with me on a bike tour.

Thanks, Patrick who not too long ago discovered the free and almost-free

[RBW] Re: Crane bell metals and quick reviews. Forget frame metals discussion. Lets talk bells!

2014-07-30 Thread Cecily Walker
My LBS wouldn't sell me a Crane when I picked up my Betty Foy, saying the
Crane mount wouldn't fit the Soma Oxford handlebars. So I ended up with a
Velo Orange
Brass Striker Bell.

I haven't compared it to the Crane, but MAN, does this thing have an
incredibly long sustained tone. It's so long that if I ring it to get the
attention of a wandering pedestrian, I put my hand over it a second or two
after striking as not to appear rude! I do love the way it sounds though.

However, my absolute favourite bike bell is the Pashley Princess
ding-dong bell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoFQKEyFFhY

I have been wanting a silver one to match my silver components on my
Rivbikes. Here is what I discovered.

 *The brass goes :* blnnng(sssiaaarrrnnnggg)
(rolling overtones in parenths) Crystal clear sonorous sound. Complex
overtones. Low note, trolley sounding bell. I love the sound. The brass is
beautiful and a rich looking color.

*The Copper goes:* Dng. Not much in the way of overtones.
Fundamental tone. Crystal clear and also nice. Higher tone if I remember
than the brass. But the color is dull and not as pretty as pictured on
 websites.

*The aluminium goes :* Plunk. Dull, muffled tone, like someone stuffed it
with felt or something. I even looked inside to see if anything was
dampening the sound. All three in stock were devoid of packaging material
and were plunky toned. No packing in the dome. The silver color is dull and
 flat.

So I guess I like the brass best. It sounds best to my ears, and is cool
when it ages and gets all patina-ed up.

I have one from RBW already and hope to get another in the next order.
What would really be great is a *real* 1 headset spacer hammer bell.

*Which of the crane suzu hammer striker bell metals do you like best?*

Unbeknownst to me, my work ID lanyard had looped around the brake lever

untangled myself, righted the bike (thank heavens for kick-stands), and
made it into the kitchen, dripping blood as I went. Grabbing a dish towel,
I glanced at my finger. #*!!*#$#!! that's gonna need stitches.

Problem-solve, problem solve. Won't be able to drive very weIl if at all,

out…got an appointment within an hour at my own close-by clinic, and Pop
ferried me around. The doc looked at it and confined that I did, in fact,
almost cut the tip off! Turns out he was a resident and wasn't quite as
confident and assured as one might hope. Fortunately, he came back with an
attending MD and an attending nurse; the resident got the job done with
lots of advice. I will just say that I am a bold soldier when it comes to
pain, but this one had me yelping! The initial injections hurt like the
devil and then weren't completely effective for the first stitch, so the
attending calmly and gently stops the procedures for more injections.
Sheesh! Anyway, in the end, my poor little pinky got 6 stitches and I
 kept my finger tip.

I'm a bit of a wooden spoon carver and maintain very sharp nice knives and
axes, so to be so sloppy in my knife use is a bit embarrassing. The nurse
said I need to make up a story about a bear or something. Maybe I'll say
there was a grizzly at the Virtual Entmoot Last night when I took off
my BBH wool cap, there were drops of blood on it from elevating my hand, so
that'll make my bear story more believable, don't you think?

Word to the wise: take great care when using a knife around your stuck
bar tape. In fact, reconsider—scissors might be the most prudent course of
 action.

Last winter, while riding 30-60 degrees F, about 30 miles into rides, my
upper thighs started to get tight and feel funky. Not hurting, but just
tight and complaining. At about 45 miles, my knees would start acting up in

All things on the bike being equal to spring, summer, and fall, when this

MUSA long pants, wool cycling shorts, and wool long underwear is what I
 would wear on these rides.

Is this typical to happen in cold weather riding?

[RBW] Re: Overheard at a bike shop

2014-06-26 Thread Cecily Walker
This reminds me of my local bike shop and the run around they gave me after
I discovered that the post-fit riding position they tried to shoehorn me

against getting Bosco handlebars, because he didn't recommend changing a
bunch of parts around and I'd get used to the fit eventually. He
completely disregarded all my physical challenges, which left me more

As I was waiting for a riding companion to get his issue dealt with, I
listened to a young, fit employee who was apparently selling one of those
carbon bikes to an older guy, maybe in his 50s. The customer was a tall
fellow with a substantial beer keg of a belly, and judging by the
conversation he was a new rider.

The employee was earnestly telling him that he really needed to use padded
bike shorts, and they had to be tight. The employee further explained that
the only bike shorts that were truly appropriate were bib shorts, and the
bib shorts should be so tight that it would be uncomfortable to stand
upright in them, but that would be all right because with the low
handlebars and the low riding position, the bibs would work. The bike shop
guy's attitude about the bibs was about the same as my and your attitude
about, say, carrying a patch kit when riding: they were utterly necessary.

It was unclear to me how the rider would be able to ride those low
 handlebars, given his round belly.

 I didn't say a word.

Go wild, Cecily! Seriously. You may not like what you end up with for some
nitpick reason, but you really really can't go wrong. First, figure out
what you want wrapped. Are you wrapping over the grips, or from the grips
 forward?

Basic rules that are made to be broken:
-- electricians tape or duct tape torn narrow make a great way to tape
cables in place. Just figure out where you want them to exit the wrap and
put a piece of tape there too.
-- wrap so half the tape is over new bar, half over previous wrap of tape.
Exceptions for this include messing up, curves (less overlap on the
outside, more on the inside), and getting around obstacles like brake
 levers, kid's toys, etc.
-- have twine ready if possible to finish the ends, otherwise the same
tape you used for the cables will also work but look different.
-- finish with a couple coats of shellac. Amber if you want it to
darken/reden, clear if you like the original color of the tape.

Watch the video on Rivendell for a great bit of learning by seeing. Have
 fun!

 With abandon,
 Patrick

[RBW] Re: OMG Bosco Handlebars Changed My Life!

2014-06-01 Thread Cecily Walker
Hey Liesl,

I've been using Ergon GP1 biokork grips since I got the bike. They're nice
and comfy, and they protected me from a lot of road shock, but they
couldn't really do anything to help with the stretched out, forward leaning
riding position. Only the Bosco handlebars could help with that.

My cockpit is set up exactly as you described, including the B67 saddle.
It's a hold over from my Dutch bike, but it wasn't that comfortable with
the more forward position. Now it feels great.

Happy riding,
Cecily

This is fantastic news, Cecily! I've boscoed-up no less than four bikes
with these bars and all are so much more comfy and give me lots and lots of
hand/riding positions. My impetus came from both neck pain and hand
discomfort. Now I'd choose 'em even if that weren't the case!

My latest Boscos on the custom have Miesha cork grips, Shimano BL- R550
levers (with a set screw to adjust for small hands), and Paul thumbies
mounted so the shifters are on the *inside* just forward of the levers.
This is the sweetest of all the shifter set-ups (others are stem-mounted
and bar-end). I also tried Ergon grips and they are quite nice on wrists,
but I for myself I think I like the Mieshas. But you might want to check
out the Ergons. My favorite of the Ergons is the GP1 Biokork. The large
and small sizes refer to length, not diameter. I like the the small
because it left room on the forward part of the bar for more hand
positions. I think what the Ergons do is to provide more *wrist*
positions, so you might really like them. But, as I said, right now my fav
is the regular Mieshas. I am also liking a sprung Brooks champion flyer
with these upright bars; a B67 would have similar effect.

Here's an overview of Ergon grips:

Anyway, all this is to say wonderful news!

[RBW] OMG Bosco Handlebars Changed My Life!

2014-05-31 Thread Cecily Walker
I took Rizzo (my Betty Foy) to my LBS today to have Bosco handlebars put
on. I wasn't sure if they'd make a difference in the pain I was feeling
while riding, but I trust the folks here (and at Riv) who suggested that I
give them a shot. I'm happy to report that all of the pain I was feeling in
my wrists is gone, as is most of the pain in my knees. I have an
appointment with a (new) physiotherapist in a week which includes a bike
fitting, so there may be further adjustments to come, but I am ever so
happy with these handlebars. I am riding upright (yay!) but my bike still
feels sprightly and quick, and still takes hills like a champion. The smile
on my face was almost as broad as the day I brought Rizzo home.

I can't thank you folks enough for the suggestions and encouragement - I'm
back in the saddle again!

[RBW] Re: Bike geometry and pain

2014-05-18 Thread Cecily Walker
This is my Batavus: https://flic.kr/p/8RBm2N (may she rest in peace)

The wheelbase is much longer than the Betty Foy, and the seat tube angle is
more slack, so when I'm on it I'm in a sit up and beg position, similar
to this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mindcaster-ezzolicious/6476153325/

Here's a side view of Rizzo: https://flic.kr/p/hUbWXm and this is a view of
me riding the day I picked her up from the bike
shop. https://flic.kr/p/fwqrUV - I've had a bike fitting since then, but
I'm still in a forward leaning position.

So while I can definitely be more upright, I don't think it's possible to
be as upright as I was on the Dutch bike. Maybe I'm wrong about that.
However, having spent three years with that bike on Vancouver's hilly
terrain, I'm not even sure I want to be that upright anymore, just more
upright than I am now.

On Saturday, May 17, 2014 6:19:40 AM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote:

 Cecily,

You mentioned getting upright like a dutch bike. I don't know if that
will solve the problem, but if that is what you want, I would think your
Betty could easily be set up that way.

To get yourself sitting bolt upright, with all your weight on your behind
and your trunk vertical, you need to get your bars *up and back*, so
your hands come up and back, closer to your trunk.
You can do this with a shorter stem extension that has a high rise quill
to it, like a 7cm or 8cm* extension* Technomic or Tallux stem, and set
 it at maximum height.
Also, you can use *Albatross bars or Bosco bars* with that stem.
These bars have a lot of rise, to get you higher, as well as a lot of sweep
back, to get the hands closer to your trunk. Bosco has the most, I think.
 http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/hb10.htm
Then, you can sit bolt upright while riding. So get the bars up and back
 towards you.
That's how I got that position on my Sam when I had Albas on it. I used
an 8cm extension Tallux with Albas and it handled great, and allowed me to
 sit totally upright.

Let us know how it goes. I will pray for you. I hope you feel better
 soon. God bless you, Cecily!

The shorter the crank, the less range of motion required to rotate the

Yes, it absolutely makes sense. I know you can't really compare the two
styles, and as I said in another message, I don't want to be as upright as
I was on the Dutch bike, because that position is really inefficient when
you live in a city as hilly as Vancouver. But there were certain things

get my Batavus repaired.

[RBW] Bike geometry and pain

2014-05-16 Thread Cecily Walker
I've written about my pain issues before, and unfortunately things have gotten
worse on that front, to the point that I can barely ride my Betty Foy anymore.

My bike is my car - it isn't just something I ride for fun - so putting it away
for awhile isn't really an option, not if I want to keep my job. I don't recall
having this much pain in my knees, wrists, or hips when I rode an upright Dutch
bike, but pain is a constant companion on my Betty Foy.

I'm hoping you folk might have some suggestions for me. Would a longer stem and
different handlebars help? What about a different saddle? I know she'll never
be a fully upright bike, but is there anything I can do to bring the handlebars
closer and higher so I'm not putting as much strain on knees, hips, and hands?
I'm desperate - I really don't want to have to sell this bike.

Thanks,
Cecily

That's a good and fair question, Deacon. Pain is a constant companion in my
hands and knees, but it's worse on the bike, even after a fitting. The hip
flexor pain is new, and I notice it when walking and on the bike, but nowhere
else.

The stem is a Soma Sutro quill stem with 100mm extension. Handlebars are Soma
Oxford with Ergon cork grips. Seat post is a Velo Orange grand cru which is
pushed back a bit to compensate for the knee that doesn't have a lot of
flexibility.

are nevertheless robust vehicles. Not having one, my suggestion would be
 the following.

I can only imagine Vancouver librarians rolling up to the book
repositories (or straight through them, if desired) in Canadian state
 issued editions of these contrivances.

That truck might be impractical for this Vancouver librarian (my Betty Foy
is mostly a city bike that goes on a few long rides in the country). This
might be a little closer to my automotive vision of a Betty Foy.

I had anterior method surgery on Monday, went home on Wednesday, and today
I had my first out of hospital PT session. I am doing well enough that I
was allowed to get on a stationary bike just to see how I'd do. I did about
five minutes pedaling around 80 RPM with no pain. They had to make me get
off (though the soft saddle would have done that soon enough anyway).

Luckily my PT guy knows a bit about biking so he didn't argue about
setting the saddle high enough. I only had to ask him to move it up higher
 twice.

I'm not sure how long it'll be before I'm cleared to ride a real bike but
I don't think it'll be all that long (and I'm going to be learning how to
walk for a while because while I've been able to ride for the last two
years walking has become more and more difficult).

That's it. I'll be back on the road soon.

 Aloha All!

Betty Foy is a character in the Wordsworth Poem *The Idiot Boy*. Poem

 Lines 52 to 61:

And Betty o'er and o'er has told
The Boy, who is her best delight,
Both what to follow, what to shun,
What do, and what to leave undone,
How turn to left, and how to right.

 And Betty's most especial charge,
Was, Johnny! Johnny! mind that you [line 58]

Come home again, nor stop at all,--
 Come home again, whate'er befall,
My Johnny, do, I pray you do.

It kinda works, but I'm not happy with it ending at line 58. It seems to

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: The Hundred Mile Burger

Or: How I fell in love with my bicycle again.

After the awesome ramble out to Mason Hill, I wasn't planning to do any
more riding this weekend, but a social engagement fell through so the first
 thought I had was,

eff it, I'm going to Crown Point.

 I have evidence of this:
 https://twitter.com/secretasianman/status/455385037743988737

But really that was a straw man. I really wanted to go to Bonneville Lock
Dam, and probably Cascade Locks, home of the Char Burger and The Bridge
of The Gods, roughly 50 miles distant.

I packed plenty of fruit and nuts and water, but forgot my maps, so I did
some psychic navigation to Troutdale and the Historic Columbia River
Highway. The Easterlies were strong today; I had to just pick a lower gear
and spin my way on the flats. It was not my favorite thing but the skies
were so blue and Mount Hood was so clear I nearly forgave the wind.

The highway leaves Troutdale and enters the Scenic Area proper after
crossing the Sandy River. I took Woodard Rd., which is one of the first
turns off the historic highway, which takes you up the bluff in a direct
fashion. It was a hoot to see cabbage fields I had last seen when I did my
birthday ride on New Year's Eve. Woodard is a pretty honest direct climb.
To stay on the ridge (or close to it) I needed to move over to Mershon,
which has a few pretty rollers. This dropped me back onto the historic
highway just outside the Town of Corbett. In short order I hit the main
vista spots, the Women's Forum, Crown Point (where I hung out at the picnic
area nobody ever seems to use), Multnomah Falls (which reminds me of
Disneyland more and more every time I visit), and the Bonneville Fish
Hatchery, where you can see GIANT STURGEON.

The last six miles of the ride to Cascade Locks was on the Trail portion
of the Historic Columbia River Highway, which I've come to like. Except for
the stairs. Oh god the stairs.

The first restaurant you reach when you get to Cascade Locks is the Char
Burger, which is currently undergoing renovations, so I ended up eating in
the smaller restaurant in the basement, which is less guns on the wall
and more waterfront dining. Oh well. BURGERS WERE HAD. I use the plural
because I took the burger of a customer who left after ordering. MORE
 CHEEZBURGER FOR ME.

I'd known that I wouldn't get back home before dark, so I was a little
apprehensive of riding on curvy country roads at night, but as it turned
out, this was the most magical part of the ride. By the time I'd reached
the touristy areas, almost all the cars were gone, and all I had to deal
with were clouds of Gnats. As the sun disappeared and the temperatures
started to fall, I found I had more energy. I've noticed this
before--riding gets easier when it's cooler.

So here's the magical part: All the small towns were really quiet, and way
more charming at night than during the day. By 10pm most all the businesses
are closed, and it's just so quiet. I heard frogs! I adjusted my dynamo
 light to point a little higher and I was able to see far in the distance;
the stars were out and the moon was nearly full.

I returned back via Marine Drive, which is a road that is built atop a
flood control dike; It was a gorgeous night to return to Portland that way,
and the radar speed reader clocked me at 15mph, which I'll take any day.

Pictures prove something, but mostly that I'm thinking about planning more
rides that go late into the night.

 ~100mi, leave noon, return 11pm.

I was inspired by a thread last year Could you own one bike? The answer
for me was no, but I could trim down the number of bikes I own. I want to
minimize and plus I don't have room as I live in a condo and bike parking
 has become an issue.

There hasn't been a lot of talk about using Riv's as commuters on this
board and even Rivendell doesn't seem to push the commuting aspect for
their bikes. The Sam to me, might make a good commuter. My commutes are 60
minutes each way, so nothing drastic. It is set up with Albatross's and a
Brooks B67, plus the required basket and Mark's rack. The bike currently
has Hetre's but I think I will use a pair of Marathons that I also own. I
will pick up SKS Longboards today and if the experiment works, a new dynamo
front wheel will be built. Ninety five percent of my cycling is commuting
so I really need to like the bike I ride. I am hoping the Sam will fit that
 bill.

The brief description supports my suspicions that the bike has cro-mo

Reading Grant's ideas on bicycles is what has led me to be curious about

The bike is a treasure. So sure and confident and comfy and beautiful.
It will go anywhere and everywhere. For a very long time.

I went out on the Saturday Gentlewoman's ride with the local Rivsters. I
can't really give a full report, though, because I was too sick with an
upper respiratory thang to venture out in the hills with the rest of the
gang (thank you Cora for sitting in the shade with me). Any time you
borrow a saddlebag to tote Dayquill and a box of Kleenex is just not a good
sign. Anyway, the little riding we did on Saturday lets me know that it is
a joy to ride and fits like a broken-in pair of wonderful handmade shoes.
I managed to get in the shortest of descents on a grassy Riv-style hill and
I was in awe of its stability. Like a mountain goat.

The paint has to be seen to be believed. JB added pearl to the paint that
you can't see until it's in brilliant sun. And then it flickers and
dazzles with the most subtle blues and yellows and whites...like you just
found a treasure on the beach.

Some details: The Select Flyer wasn't just a test saddle; it's the
saddle. Paul seatpost, thumbies, and brakes; SON hub, White Industries MI5
rear hub, brown big bens, phil BB, shimano xt derailer. Will add cedar
fenders and a nitto mini front rack.

And how wonderful to say to my fellow low PBH friends like Manny: Take
it for a ride! (Rich Lee, you're next in line!)

Once it's set up here in Minneapolis, there'll be more photos and ride
 reports.

Thank you everyone for your knowledge, skill, artistry, support and
input. And especially Grant, Mark, Mark, Rich, JB, and Keven.

grinning from ear-to-ear, Riv Chica Warrior

don't even know how I settled on tan. Wait, yes I do - I flipped through
the Group's photo pool and noted that the bikes similar in paint to my
Betty Foy looked bright and lively with the tan; I felt the olive color
looked heavy and separate from the bike - like it would not complement my
bike but rather compete for its own attention. (Though on the orange or
green bikes olive really was spectacular.) Probably nobody else even
understands what I'm prattling on about, which is why I took the precaution
of writing to Riv in the notes: I chose the tan because it brightened
bikes similar in color to my Betty Foy and looked lively. If you disagree
and think olive is better, please call me and get me to come to my senses.

Well, it's done. I have no great need for such a bag on my short commutes
to my sons' school, but I am a shameless bag hound of the worst kind. And
 there you have it.

That brings me to school biking. I've mentioned before on here about the
traffic snarl at the school. It truly brings out the worst in people - even
me! Routinely, people park and block access to the sidewalk (yes, it's
legal to for bikes to ride on them here, and with 2 kids - 1 who is on a
tiny 16 inch wheel bike - I certainly use them) by parking across the
sidewalk. I've started leaving notes on cars, knocking on windows, calling
traffic enforcement. Some poor child will get hit after being forced off
the sidewalk into the busy street; it really is a matter of time. It's been
very frustrating but then today happened: I was stopped by a MOM on a BIKE!
This is a brand new thing! She lives a few houses away from me and decided
she was going to bike commute with her child (who is still on training
wheels). She was riding a Lemond road bike with drop bars and none of the
Rivish accoutrements. She was admiring things on my bike (mostly my dog)
but maybe I can send Grant some new business. If not, he'll just have to be
happy with my reckless order from tonight. ;)

[RBW] Soma Oxford vs. Nitto Albatross

2014-02-24 Thread Cecily Walker
When my bike shop substituted the Soma Oxford handlebars for the Nitto
Albatrosses I'd originally requested, I was told that the handlebars were
just like Nitto, except for the finish. However, I'm learning that the
Albatross bars are a bit wider, and they're also a bit longer than the
Somas.

I'm wondering if anyone has a photograph or some other graphic that
compares the size of the two handlebars so that I would be able to see the
difference? I'm still trying to tune in the right fit on the Betty Foy, and
even though I've gone in for a fitting, I can't help wondering if the
longer, wider Albatross handlebars would make an appreciable difference in
how the bike feels, especially on those days when the arthritis is flaring
up and my wrists hurt a lot.

Thanks in advance!

2014-02-24 Thread Cecily Walker
Hey Liesl,

Keven at Riv actually suggested the Boscos back when I thought I was going
to buy the build kit from Riv, but for whatever reason (stupidity on my
part, maybe?) they didn't make it onto my list of considerations when I had
the bike built locally. They sort of remind me of the handlebars I had on
my Dutch bike. Now that I think of it, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I've just gotten so used to riding in a somewhat forward position (instead
of bolt upright) that I worry the Boscos might make me too upright, if that
makes any sense.

Thanks for the reminder and the link to the other thread. I've got some
thinkin' to do.

We got a 2 wheeled trailer that proved quite useful, stable, easy to attach
/ detach from the bike, able to double up as grocery getter, etc. Even a
small dog seems like it could upset things if it suddenly decided to hop
from one side of the basket to the other.

Since you already have the front rack basket, you might see if panniers
work out for shopping. Carry some re-usable shopping bags into the store,
pop them into the panniers when you're done. Personally I like the way my
Atlantis handles with a front load in low riders. The downside to front
low riders is bending over to access them and with my natural clumsiness I
tend to bang my head on handelbars.

For a rear rack, consider one with the second set of pannier bars like
the new Nitto that Rivendell keeps teasing us with photos. They must have
some up there in Walnut Creek by now. Tubus makes several with that
feature. It allows easy use of the top platform even with the panniers on
the bike. Or you can take a bag off the bike without disturbing the top
 load.

Depending on how much stuff you need to handle, several rear trunk racks
(REI, Jannd) make them with built in, zip out panniers but they are fairly
smallish. OK for light shopping but not enough for a tour.

As others have pointed out, big saddlebags are another way to go. When
the Really Ginormous Big Saddlesack came out, early adopters delighted in
posting how many gallons of milk, pounds of food, dozens of eggs, etc, they
could carry. Big saddlebags need a rack for stability support but almost
 anything will work.

The whole process of working out racks'n'bags is great good fun. That's
why so many listers have so much extra stuff.

BTW, re: the bike falling over problem - try a rear triangle mounted
kickstand. They seem to provide better support for loads than traditional
stands. There is even a little short stand for the front that mounts to a
low rider rack. They are bug ugly though.

I'm headed toward the devotee camp myself. A friend just bought a
super-duper high end downhill mountain bike, and I want to accompany her on
some of the less strenuous but somewhat demanding single track rides that I

I have no idea how I'm going to pay for it, but I have no doubt that it

I love riding in the dirt. I was surprised by how much I loved it, but

I think with a different set of wheels/tires, Betty could take me on most
of the trails I'd be happiest on in the area, but I'm pretty sure she isn't
North Shore ready. To be honest, I'm not sure I am, either. But I do love a

Cecily, I can't say enough, get whatever bike makes you comfortable out in

[RBW] Loving Tributes to Betty Foy

2014-02-08 Thread Cecily Walker
I've read many loving tributes to Sams, Hilsens, Hunqapillars and other Riv
bikes over the last few years, but there is precious little writing out
there about the joys of owning and riding a Betty Foy. I'm familiar with
Lovely Bicycle's faint praise, and I've read and re-read the posts (and
seen the videos) from the women of Let's Go Ride a Bike, but I've always
found it odd that there isn't a lot out there about the history of the
Betty Foy, the fun people have had in the saddle, or musings about what the
Foy has meant to the lucky woman (or man) who owns one. Even Rivendell's
site is scant when it comes to copy about the Foy, saying only that you can
do equally well on a Betty Foy what you can do on a Sam. That's the
equivalent of saying Yeah, so's your sister.

And now that Betty Foy (and her brother Yves) are nearing the end of their
model lives, I fear that I'll never learn all there is to learn, or read
all there is to read about this bike that I've come to love so much. Unless
I write it myself, of course...

Feeling thinky on a Saturday night,
Cecily

[RBW] Re: Wool, Ventile, and Quicksnow Non-Intentional Experiment

2014-02-04 Thread Cecily Walker
I have no thoughts on the robustness of the Riv gear, but you sure do tell
a good story.

On Monday, February 3, 2014 12:19:18 PM UTC-8, Liesl wrote:

I think this qualifies as Riv content given the nature of this winter for
many of us in the cold climes, so indulge me for a moment

This weekend, since it's too crappy to ride bikes, I went to my college
dorm-mates (circa 1977-78) reunion on a small lake in northern Wisconsin.
Cold temps (below zero as we drank morning coffee) and 2-3 feet of wet snow
on the ground. Five of us headed out with our snowshoes onto the lake in
the morning just as ice-fishermen were also heading out in their heavy
4-wheel drive pickup. I was attired in fantastic gear for snowshoeing:
vintage buffalo plaid thick wool hunting pants, a down sweater with a
wind-proof Empire Canvas cotton anorak over it, Empire boots, and leather
chopper mitts. Very quickly, though, the truck got into trouble with
'snow-ice/lake slush and as we watched it, we realized the same thing was
happening to us. We came to call this deep and foot-thick layer of slush
'quicksnow', because it acted a lot like quicksand. This slush can form
when there's a really heavy snow cover on a lake and it depresses the ice
and water seeps over the top or through ice fishing holes. Anyway, we see
the truck spinning up green slush, look down at our feet and see that we
too are sinking into about a foot of wet wet slush, and elect to *urgently*
move to the shore, which was about 50-75 feet away. (see attached photo of
the truck's standing-water tracks—water still standing 8 hours after this
 story happened!)

Thinking the pier that someone hadn't taken out for the winter would do
the trick, my friend Kris and I made a b-line toward it. But the pier was
too high and covered with, again, over 2 feet of snow, and it became clear
in a hurry that the pier was not our salvation; we're now about 20 feet
from the shore. I look down and the decks of my snowshoes are covered in
very watery slush that is instant-freezing to their decks and bindings. I
attempt to move my literally freezing feet and fall over onto my side.
Immediately and with dread, I feel ice water seeping in at my wrist and
elbow. I now have a sense of panic because I am wearing a down sweater
with a cotton anorak over it and my boots also have cotton tops. I can
see that my wool hunting pants are in the water, but I don't feel it
seeping through. I knew if I tried to right myself I would wallow more in
this icy water and become perhaps really soaked. I calmly yet urgently
said to my friend Kris, I need help getting up. She swiftly pulled me up
and I got myself to a sappling on the shore. All of us made it out to the
shore/road and back to the cabin with no hypothermia. I've attached before
and end-of-the-day photos with both fetching ensembles.

Okay, here's the Riv point: I wore my heavy wool pants, wool lined
choppers, and wool-lined Empire canvas boots for the entire rest of the
day, which was spent outdoors. I traded out my upper torso garments for a
ski sweater and a Filson vest. Wool, the miracle fabric. Keeping people
warm and alive for 10,000 years.

My question: how would the Riv Rain Jacket have done? Would it have kept
my down sweater dry in this situation? Any ventile-wearers (meaning at
least you, Deacon Patrick) with any kind of similar experience?

[RBW] Re: From Sadness to Happiness - I'm Riding Again!

2014-01-30 Thread Cecily Walker
Hi Ron,

So happy to hear that about your mom! I'm not afraid of the knee
replacement. The sooner they do it, the better, as far as I'm concerned. My
only obstacle is the ridiculously long wait times for this surgery in
British Columbia.

Cecily, my Mom had the knee replacement last fall at a truthfully spry 80.
Her knee canted sideways - it was horrible to look at before. Straight as

replacement - the work that goes with recovery is already built into your
 psyche.

in my arthritic right knee. I still have one more injection to go, but
after that, the knee should be good for another 9-12 months! This stuff
isn't cheap, and it isn't covered by my extended medical insurance, but
it's a small price to pay for freedom from pain and greatly increased

I just wanted to share my good news since so many of you were so lovely
and expressed such great concern when I was convinced I'd have to stop
riding until I had surgery. Love you guys and gals.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne as tourer

It was probably a dumb idea, but I rode my Betty Foy on some (very easy)
singletrack on 38mm Soma New Express tires. Betty and I both lived to tell
about it.

More nice photos, this time of Sams, on the Blug. I am suprised to see

We shouldn’t be pigeonholing Sam like this, but for the prospective
bike-shopper choosing options *in an established category*, we could
say it’s a “road touring bike.” And it does that *one* thing better
than any other bike we know of (we’ve tried ‘em all)

I thought the Atlantis was the model for touring. (Yes, I know that Riv
is trying to squeeze this beautiful round peg into a quotidian square hole.)

At any rate, there are nice photos of the Sam (including two with *Drop
Bars!* and *single top tubes!*) that make me a bit nostalgic for the 56
I used to own. I didn't like the way it handled with a heavy rear load, but
I daresay that, with load better distributed fore/aft, it would have done
 well.

(For the record, if you are going to build a Sam up as an upright city
bike, I *do* approve of a kickstand plate, though I would not want one
on my bike -- mine didn't have one.)

But as a country bike it was close to ideal; just not ideal for me,
since 45 mm tires off road, around here, are just too skinny for my taste.

But it is *pretty* and, had I all the money in the world and a lot more
time to ride every bike I own, I'd have kept it. Certainly I would have
chosen it over the old 1958 Herse (nice as that was) that replaced it for a
year or so until I split the difference between Fargo and Ram.

Segwaying and swaying (in the metaphorical breeze): I took the '03 fixed
 (70) out on the same climbing route today that I rode the 14-speed Ram
over yesterday. And although yesterday's ride used only these gears (in
 order of use) -- 65, 70, 60, 50, 74 -- the 25 gap and a freewheel for
steep downhills makes one almost apologetic, it all becomes so easy. OTOH,
there is nothing in cycling life as fun/challenging/satisfying as pacing
yourself to stand on a 1 mile hill. (My climbs are steepish but modest in
length.) The '99 gofast, 75, is even more fun on the same route, but it
doesn't carry a load of mail or groceries.
