[RBW] Will a Hilsen fit the Rock N Road Tires?

I just read somewhere back in the archives that a Hilsen will (just barely)
fit a Marathon Supreme 50c tire which leads me to wonder if the BG Rock N
Road tire might fit also. Kinda thinking the side knobs might rub but now
I'm curious. Anyone have any experience with this combo?
Thanks in advance,

building my Hilsen or else this bike would be mine. Really miss my
Quickbeam. Such a great bike. Good luck with selling it?... or keeping it

[RBW] Anyone wanna sell / trade a 66cm Quickbeam?

2012-04-19 Thread Cycletex
Hey,

If anyone's interested in unloading their 66cm Quickbeam please let me
know. I'd prefer frame only with front rack braze ons but I'm not
picky.

Or even better yet, if anyone wants to trade a 66cm for 68 with a Joe
Bell custom paint job and Clif Wright custom beausage that would be
ideal.

Thanks,
Clif

[RBW] Re: How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make

2011-08-05 Thread Cycletex
There's a pretty substantial difference in feel from the 35mm Paselas to the
28 Paselas imo. I'd try that first and see how you like it. I float from 28
to 32 to 37's on my Rambouillet and Quickbeam. The 37's feel sluggish on
steep hills but the 28's are downright zippy with the 32's trailing close
behind. Pretty light also even for the TG version.

[RBW] Re: Japanese Atlantis vs Wisconsin Waterford Atlantis

2011-03-20 Thread Cycletex
Concerning the detail differences between the two Atlanti, do you know
what they are? I don't remember seeing them discussed anywhere. Not
that it's here or there, but I think my Atlantis is a Waterford having
come (used) in a Waterford box but then that doesn't really prove
anything. I have a mild curiosity though either factory would be just
fine.

What size do ya'll ride? I'm guessing my 68cm bikes are too tall but I
could ask around. There's also rentals from Bicycle Sport Shop and I
talked to a couple of guys at NAHBS that picked up bikes on Craigslist
for the week for around $100. Kind of a pain to hook up to buy though.
Come to think of it, you might try calling Ozone Bike Dept. and seeing
if they'd rent out one of their used bikes.

[RBW] Re: Caprock Canyon State Park Trailway (Texas)

2011-03-07 Thread Cycletex
I've heard the same sketchy reports on trail conditions. Have you
tried calling Caprock Canyons? 806/455-1492

I passed through Estelline a couple of years ago and did some quick
riding on that end aboard my Quickbeam. Lots of stickers.

http://tinyurl.com/5r2f2r6

http://tinyurl.com/6ylf72x

Granite pack was kinda loose but not too bad. As you can see in the
second pic the trail is kinda overgrown but not unridable (where I
rode it).

I'd love to get back up there and try and do the whole thing. If I did
I think I'd go 50c Big Apples at about 45-50 psi on the Atlantis and
maybe take some time and make it a two day ride. Please keep us
updated what you find out and if you decide to ride it.

[RBW] Re: 68cm Rambouillet for sale "Do I Detect the Odor of a Rat?"

2011-01-22 Thread Cycletex
I apologize if I jumped to any conclusions.

After an email exchange with another interested party we both decided
there was something not quite right with this sale. The lack of timely
response, lack of pictures, the timing after I expressed a desire to
buy one, pressure to close quickly... Also not too sure why Scott
didn't offer to sell the Ram to me directly since as he says, "I
listed my Rambouillet after seeing Cycletex's solicitation of
interest in purchasing a 68cm Ram".

With this apology, I'll close the issue on my end.

I wish Scott all the luck selling his Rambouillet and the best of luck
to any potential buyers as well.

2011-01-21 Thread Cycletex
Seller finally responded after three days. No pics. Not real positive
he'll have any anytime soon. Something about it being cold in
Alaska... The last line of the email is: "I must say that I've gotten
several responses so I'll have to close." Hey, no pressure or
anything.

Another interested party contacted me to see if the seller wrote back
and said his inquiries were unanswered and the last mail bounced.
Curious that the seller has only one post on RBW to sell a bike I
mentioned I really wanted in another post...

Anyone happen to know Scott Smith from Alaska with a blue Ram?

Not to be a jerk or anything but does anybody else smell a rat? Feel
free to insert eye roll at my gullibility here...

Regardless, I think I'll pass on sending my $1800 to Scott in Alaska
with the unconfirmed Ram deal in Alaska that must close quickly...

[RBW] 68 cm Quickbeam for sale?? Now Forbes Black and the 2XLT

2011-01-19 Thread Cycletex
>From a discussion group post on bikes for big guys from Forbes,

"Allan Wanta in California built me a prototype, which worked well. I
got in touch with a trading partner in Taiwan and asked him to take my
design into production."

The prototype:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclesvalhalla/1581813904/in/pool-497742@N25

Here's my 2xlt:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/clifwright/4158057169/in/pool-497742@N25

And some more from the discussion:

"These are "virtual" 68cm frames made from butted 7005 aluminum
cyclocross tubing. The top tube slopes up 5cm from the seat tube to
the head tube, so the frame measurement at the seat tube is 63cm
center-to-top. The horizontal measurement across the top tube is 63cm.

Frame design is classic "sport touring" geometry in terms of angles.
I made the chainstays extra long to accomodate big feet. The frames
are built for 700C wheels. I designed the frame to handle wide tires
and fenders.

The frames come with beefy carbon forks. They would work very well
for someone 6'8"/330lb.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I've been lamenting the lack of info for

such as low trail, ect. Headed over to join now. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Anybody have a 68 cm Quickbeam for sale??

2011-01-19 Thread Cycletex
Yes.

I have one of Forbes' road bikes. The "2XLT" is an aluminum road bike
designed (I'm pretty sure) by Alan Wanta and built in Taiwan at the
same factory as.. (enter major maker of aluminum road frames) somebody
or other. He no longer sells the frames.

How is it? Well, it's obviously not a Riv, but for an aluminum bike,
it's way more Riv than the "major makers" aluminum road bike. It rides
great. Very stable at all speeds. No shimmy... at all. Carbon fork...
well, I get the heebie jeebies about that at times but it feels good
and all. The bars would be higher if my ding dang LBS hadn't cut the
steerer tube down an inch or so but the coolest thing about it, beyond
the ride, is it's tire clearance. I ride it with 32c Paselas and most
recently with Grand Bois 30's (about the same actual width as the
Paselas). Using these "fattish" road tires, I find they mellow out the
stiffness of the aluminum really well. When I've been off this bike
awhile it takes me a bit of time to get back in sync with it, but when
I do it feels really sweet. Set up with open pro's, dura ace 7700
components it's pretty dang light for it's size. Climbs the west
Austin hills better than I do so no complaints. Oh yeah, it has fender
mounts too.

I have the specs that Forbes shared on a user group I can forward to
anyone interested. Overall, I'm really glad I purchased it (esp. at
the discounted Ebay price) and it's a nice alternative to my Quickbeam
and Atlantis when I get the go-fast bug.

Thanks for posting that. As a tall rider I've never tried long cranks.
As it happens, I take delivery of a custom bike next week with 185mm

[RBW] Re: VO 50.4 BCD Crankset is here

2010-08-20 Thread Cycletex
Ok, I'll go.

I had a Grand Cru seatpost clamp shear. This was the round part that
the rear bolt screws into. Kinda scary but the saddle stayed in place
long enough that I could climb off safely.

I weigh 210 and ride semi off road at times so maybe that had
something to do to it though I would hope a seatpost clamp could
handle that.

VO took care of me and sent another clamp very quickly and I sent them
a photo detailing the break for their info.

I'm trying the Grand Cru seat post one more time as it's the only
(affordable) seat post with the setback I need to ride a Brooks
saddle. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I wouldn't hesitate to order a number of other parts from them and am
about to buy a stem and the Grand Cru brakes. Possibly the crankset
later in the year.

[RBW] Re: Shorts--MUSA alternatives

2010-07-02 Thread Cycletex
Swrve vs. Rapha. On the bike Rapha is way better. They're thinner
which is great for wearing over lycra or padded undies and the button
adjusters inside mean you don't need a belt. I need a belt with my
Swrve shorts and that makes them a bit restrictive on the bike. The
Raphas look pretty decent off the bike but maybe not as normal looking
as the Swrves. Both are stupid pricey but I'd buy the Raphas again.
They're that good.

[RBW] Re: 67cm AHH double top tube inquiry

I hope somebody with a tall Hilsen chimes in. Particularly someone who
also has experience on another tall bike like a 68cm Ram or
equivalent. I'm riding a 68cm Quickbeam and Atlantis and have no
rigidity problems though I was told by Riv HQ the Hilsen has lighter
tubing than either of those frames. So little info out there for
frames in our size. It seems Zinn is using compact frames with the
head tube and seat tube extending quite a bit over the top tube as his
solution. I've also spoken with another builder who was proclaiming
the sloping top tube as the answer. Of course, he was a pretty short

[RBW] Re: Charity Ride Atlantis Poll or "What Would Fred Do?"

2010-06-02 Thread Cycletex
Well, besides not getting any sleep the night before, at all..., it
went great. Didn't change a thing on the Atlantis. Front rack with
basket, shop sack, fenders and 37c Paselas were all kept as was. Felt
a little rough the first 20 miles or so but kicked in strong for the
remaining 60. Received LOTS of compliments from the carbon crew. No
derision. Rode through Luchenbach 20 miles from the finish. Lots of
wind. Drank my two free beers of Fireman's 4 afterwards (...) and
the exhaustion hit me hard so I raced back to Austin with devil music
playing on 11 before collapsing. Mighty fun!

Incidentally, I did strip the Atlantis down yesterday and put some new
shoes on. Now running the 50c Big Apples I've had in the garage for
the last year. Now that's some fun. Made it across the two creek
crossings on one of my regular routes without putting a foot down for
the first time. 30 psi holds my 215 pounds just fine and makes for a
super plush ride on dirt. Gonna have to splurge on the 60c's sometime
in the future.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Mini Front>Wald Med Basket>Shopsack = Perfection

2010-05-08 Thread Cycletex
I'm running the same setup on my Atlantis and you're right, it makes a
great around town configuration but I'll add that I also ride road
rides with the same combination and love it. It's really nice to have
the extra capacity the sack gives you and you can stop by the market
on the way home and top off the bag without having to go home first
and get your "grocery" bike.

[RBW] Re: Speed Up My Sam

2010-04-27 Thread Cycletex
When I need to speed up my Quickbeam I simply switch out the tires
from 37c Paselas to 28c or maybe 32c Paselas. Lighter tires equal less
rolling weight, quicker acceleration and a bit easier time on steep
hills. Not being able to compensate with rolling gear changes on the
QB accentuates the difference in tire changes. It's kinda amazing how
different the bike feels with lighter tires and no other changes.

[RBW] Fitness Ride in Austin Tonight

2010-04-12 Thread Cycletex
I'll be helping lead the Heavy Metal Fitness Ride from aboard my 68cm
Quickbeam with big ol fat Paselas tonight if any Austin Riv owners
would like to join.

The Metal ride is kind of a club ride for the rest of us. We have a
fast group (slayer class) and a more mellow group (melvin class) and
will ride aprox 24 miles through South Austin and wind up at the
Jackalope for free beer and half price pizza.

Lugged steel, carbon road, mountain, bmx will all be there along with
my favorites - fast guys on touring bikes.

Helmets, lights, lock and tip money all highly suggested...

[RBW] Re: Will riding a Rivendell make me self-conscious or overly worrisome?

I once came within inches of running headlong into a prostitute that
lurched into my path while cycling in North Austin. Disaster was only
averted by her quick thinking co-worker who pulled her back at the

perfume and cheaper whiskey in my nostrils for the next five miles.
Neither noticed I was riding a Quickbeam...

[RBW] For Sale

2009-12-11 Thread Cycletex
Hey ya'll. I have a few things I need to get rid of. Shipping prices
are in parenthesis and I'll be happy to refigure shipping if anyone
buys multiple items.

Shoot me a pm if you're interested and I'll send pics to anyone
wanting to take a looksie.

*68cm Specialized Expedition Frame..$250 ($50 thru fed ex)
I'm catching and releasing this one. I was stoked to catch it but I'm
overextended a bit so must now release.
Pics of the frame built up are here:

http://hardmenwithsoftbellies.wordpress.com/2009/09/15/its-alive/

Plenty of nicks and scratches but not really all that bad. The
seatpost binder braze ons have some damage and I stripped out one
binder bolt but it held until I stripped it. You might want to have
that repaired but other than that it's a solid frame. I'll send pics
of the damage to interested parties. Purchased for $275. Comes with
the original Mafac brakes with new pads and the Specialized headset
that needs rebuilding or replacing.

*Sugino AT Triple Crankset.$60 ($7)
175mm 46/36/26 Really great condition. Shiny!
*Sugino XD Double Crankset 48/34.$75 ($7)
175mm Less than 200 miles. Great shape.
*Sugino RD Black Single Speed Crank Arms.$45 ($6)
175mm Good cond. Nicks and scratches.
*VO CR18 / 105 rear wheel.$95 ($15)
Cr18 rim w/ shimano 105 hubs. Less than 200 miles. Great cond.
*VO Model 3 Saddle.$65 ($5)

Hey Jeff,

I'm gearing up for riding with you guys on a brevet or two. I wasn't
ready for you guys this last Saturday and I'll have to see how my
training goes through cedar season for the Jan. brevet but by this
time next year I hope to be there. (Fingers crossed and knocking on

I don't know. My 37mm Paselas are pretty supple. Maybe not as supple
as some in the test, but when compared with other 700c tires in it's
class the Pasela fairs well in suppleness and weight. The 35c pasela
did really well in the performance test that was published in BQ Vol5
#1. At that time they were the fastest of the "fat" 700c tires
tested.

"The surprisingly fast times of a few tires, such as the Panaracer
"Pasela" (34.5m m wide), the Avocet "Cross" (34.5mm) and the
Mitsoboshi "Trimline" (37mm) appear to be mostly due to their great
width."

My fast preference is the 32c tg pasela. I run them on a light
aluminum go-fast and I'll pick them over every other tire I own.
Again, they hold there own in suppleness and weight when compared to
others in their class. I ride this bike with some really fast riders
here in austin with carbon and skinny's and when they drop me I never
blame the tire. The engine however... now that's another story.

[RBW] Re: an imitation or just a coincidence?

2009-11-03 Thread Cycletex

I saw that one at the Texas Custom Bicycle Show in Austin a couple of
weeks ago. Nice bike. I doubt he's trying to imitate the Hillborne but
maybe there is a nod to Riv there. Regardless, I like his using the
names of a Texas historical figure and not surprised an Austin
framebuilder would. Violet Crown itself is a historical reference to
Austin in one of O'Henry's stories. Yes, he's a newer builder and his
prices reflect that somewhat. He wasn't the only newish builder at the
show. Texas framebuilding, while not unknown by any means, certainly
isn't as established as in other parts of the country. Particularly
framebuilders in this vein. Seems most of the more established guys
are either road performance or mountain bikes but the lugged steel Riv
style are starting to catch on. There was another builder at the show,
Gallus, that was showing a porteur bike. Not such a big deal in Oregon
maybe, but it was cool to see some of the Texas builders using the
front loading french design ideas. BTW - Violet Crown also showed a
Rando style bike at the show.

[RBW] OT - Stolen Handsome Devil in Austin, Texas

2009-10-16 Thread Cycletex

Heads up on a stolen 60cm Handsome Devil in Austin, Texas.

Cream colored frame, tiagra rear derailleur, dura ace downtube
shifters, dura ace cassette, black crankset (not sure brand), Masi
handlebars, black stem, velocity dyad rims...

Stolen from an Austin ride organizer that's done a LOT for the local
social cycling scene here in Austin, so we'd love to see his ride
returned.

Here's a link to a pic:

2009-09-30 Thread Cycletex

Heard back from the seller and yes, indeed, the bolt on hanger is what
he was using.

I love running my QB single speed but this is all interesting to me.
It's a great riding frame and I can see someone wanting to run gears
on it for a tour or a change of pace. Cheaper than ordering a whole
new frame. Especially one in the same class.

Thanks for the input ya'll.

2009-09-29 Thread Cycletex

Hmmm. Seller has excellent feedback but I'm confused by the " it can
easily accommodate a rear and front derailleur" bit. I've got a
question in to him to find out more. Also the "left the steer tube
uncut" thing is confusing. Is that ever an issue with a threaded stem?

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants, Knickers & Shorts

2009-09-29 Thread Cycletex

Don't have the knickers but I wear the Musa shorts and I've got a pair
of the Ex Officio pants that I'm pretty sure are the amphi's and are
definitely the super flyweight nylon.

The Musa's are lightweight but I wouldn't call it flyweight and the
fabric is just a hair / smidgen stiffer than the Ex Officio's. Not
stiff at all, but only in comparison. The Musa material has that
slightly shiny nylon effect.

My shorts also tend to come down in the back unless cinched up tight
and pulled up when saddling up. Even then they come down in the back a
bit. Still, I really like them. I wear a cutoff pair of Jonesware wool
padded shorts underneath and that's a real comfy combo even for long
rides. Off the bike, I wear the Musa's almost every day.

Belt is fine for my use. Never thought about it much so it must be
working properly. I don't think it's removable.

Hope that helps some.

[RBW] Re: Selle Anatomica

2009-09-27 Thread Cycletex

The Selle Anatomica is the most comfortable saddle I've tried. Much
better for my butt than the Brooks. I use the one without the cutout
and without the webbing underneath. Break in is nil. Love the long
rails. That's the number one reason I started using them. That's the
good. The bad is they stretch out really fast. I'm 205 pounds and on
the one I ride the most I hit the limit with the adjustment screw
within about 6 months. Drilled the holes and tied up the bottom of the
saddle next. We'll see what happens now. The other beef I have is it
sags a bit on the left hand side and that pulls the front of the
saddle to the right. Not pretty but it's still comfy. I got a great
price on the three I have so no big deal, but at retail they ain't
cheap. I'm trying the VO #3 on my touring bike. I'll share my thoughts
after I put some more miles on it. So far so good. Longer break in
than the An-Atomica but that's probably a good thing when comparing
life span.

[RBW] Re: Pondering Sale of 68cm Quickbeam

2009-09-25 Thread Cycletex

Don't do it!

I have this distinct feeling we'll hear back from you in a year or so
about how much you regret selling your Quickbeam. Especially if it's
your favorite bike. Actually, I don't think you should sell the
Atlantis either. As you know, neither one are made anymore in our size
and will be hard to impossible to replace. My advice is to sell
something else.

Funny about this go-fast thing. I've got the same bug and noticed
another go fast post over on ibob last night. Luckily, I have one of
the Valhalla virtual 67cm 2XLT aluminum frames that's been gathering
dust in the garage for a couple of years. I've come really close to
selling it and even had a very interested local guy looking at it for
a time. Fortunately, I still have it as the go fast bug is hitting me
hard. I'm not sure what direction I'd head if I'd sold this aluminum
frame. Big bikes are far and few between. And the Roadeo isn't even
going to come close to fitting us.

Lesson? If you're riding 68cm bikes don't sell anything! Way too hard
to replace and you'll always come back around to wanting to ride your
QB and Atlantis.

BTW I'm really curious what you're looking at for a tall go fast.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay

2009-09-14 Thread Cycletex

I wouldn't necessarily consider it over priced. Kind of depends on the
buyer. If you have the money and want a quickbeam I'd say go for it.
Not like they're making more 68's. I've got a 68cm quickbeam and am a
huge fan. Definitely nimble with 32's and stripped down. I hop it over
all kinds of stuff and ride it in fast rides with guys on carbon,
alum, ect. Nimble enough. I would agree with cyclofiend though that if
your looking to put gears on it you might consider if it's really the
bike for you. BTW - I also suffer from knee issues and was surprised
at how little single speed riding effected them negatively. You know,
you only have one gear (actually two on QB) but you pick it. I would
say my quickbeam has actually strengthened my knees. Your mileage may
vary.
