Damn, Bill! That's going to be a dream bike. Maybe you've already covered 
this and I missed it, but I'm curious whether you went with a  threaded or 
threadless fork?

With that tire clearance, I would prefer that both bikes had cantilever 
posts, but I don't really mind the braking on long reach brakes. Disclaimer 
- I don't weigh that much (140-145 pounds), and even camping loads are 
usually pretty light for me. I just like that cantilever brakes allow you 
to maximize your fender clearance. 
The new Roadini sounds like it will be more of a bridge between the Roadeo 
and the Homer Hilsen.

[RBW] New Roadinis will have clearance for 42 mm tires

I saw today the announcement that the new Roadinis are niw designed for 
R559 brakes and will easily clear 42 mm tires. Good news, as far as I’m 
concerned! The only thing I am slightly sad about is that they aren’t 
coming in grilver, which is THE color for the Roadini, in my opinion. That 
may be influenced by my love for the silver gray imron paint on early 80’s 
Treks. Regardless, if I have a  job by then, I may have to get one.

My idea of a dream semi-custom Roadeo would be pretty much the same - canti 
brakes and the fender/tire clearance of a Sam or Homer. Then it could 
always have 38mm tires, whether it had fenders on or not. Roadeos are 
already kind of a dream bike though… ;)

 Golden Gate Bridge.  The cross winds that would continue all day were very 
 light in the morning and would be far stronger in the afternoon, which was 
 advantageous.  The course headed mainly into a headwind while the winds 
 were weak and returned with a tailwind while the winds strengthened.  I 
 did 
 most of the ride solo, and I believe I was probably the second finisher.  
 One rider who went out fast on the first climb of the day, I passed buying 
 mangoes at a fruitstand late in the afternoon.  One rider who blew past me 
 was on a current A Homer Hilsen, and he cheerfully said "Nice Bike!" as 
 his 
 youthful strong legs propelled him down the road.  

 My early vintage Roadeo did exceedingly well.  I had a slight panic 
 when I realized that I did not pack gloves, so it was also my first 
 barehanded 200k.  The only inconvenience that ended up causing was it give 
 me another place to apply sunscreen, and with no gloves

Okay, I just received mine. I am between 5’11” and 6’, 140lbs, and normally 
wear a medium. I don’t like baggy clothes, but per Riv’s recommendation 
(and picture of Will wearing one), I sized up to a large. The fit is 
perfect for wearing on a bike. The ribs keep it fitted, but the sleeves and 
back are plenty long for not riding up when on the bike (even with drop 
bars). I love it!

I went with their recommendation to size up one size, but am worried it 
will be too big. I don’t like baggy clothing, but they made it sound like 
ordering your normal size would be too small.

Dang, I really wanted to get one of these, and hoped to be gainfully employed 
again by the time they are out. I’m no really interested anymore if it’s going 
to be made for long reach calipers. I don’t understand that change, but wish 
them well. Being able to run cantis was what was sealing the deal for me. It’s 
really a great design otherwise, but with big tire clearance, I really want 
cantis.

With the chain stays on the Appa, it may not fit with both wheels on, based on 
what I can fit in my Hyundai Accent hatchback (a bike with 46cm chainstays is

[RBW] New batch of Sam Hillbornes this fall.

Getting back to the original topic, what is the old color being brought back 
for the new batch if Hillbornes? I would guess by the wording that it’s not a 
color that was previously used for Hillbornes. There’s been some nice greens in 
the past - as dark one that some Simple Ones had. That would look great. I’ve 
seen a copper/cream color on some Homers and Legolas models over the years. 
Might be my favorite Rivendell color ever. I think the black/cream and sage 
ones were the best colors the model has come in so far. There’s been a lot of 
blue and orange variations over the years, but who knows?

Clayton, I'd probably need the zero offset stem to fit noodles on the 
current 59 Atlantis. Obviously, the 70 degree head angle can get the bars a 
lot closer, but only by having the bars much higher than I want). Yes, it 
could be done for me, but only just. The 55 Atlantis, with its 59cm top 
tube would fit easier, but I would only want that much standover if I was 
setting it up more like a mountain bike (it'd be great with a dirt drop and 
wavie bars).

For uprights, it would really depend on which bar I chose. They have such 
varying amounts of rise, drop, sweep, and forward extension (or lack 
thereof).

In any case, I'm not arguing that no one can put drops on these and be 
happy (just not me). I'm saying that it's obvious that they are meant for 
swept back bars, especially for someone who only just fits the pbh range 
for their size. There's nothing wrong with that, and if some folks like 
their short reach bars and ultra short stems, more power to you. There's 
also nothing wrong with the rest of us.

Clayton, most people I know, if changing from drops to upright bars on the same 
bike, would use a longer stem for the uprights. That’s not an emotional 
decision. For myself, if on a 59 Atlantis with its 64cm top tube, I’m not 
running anything but upright bars on it. I bet it’s great too, but it’s not an 
emotional decision that I wouldn’t want drops on that bike, especially my bar 
if choice - noodles. Maybe bars like the one James from Analog showed, but they 
are personally an aesthetic and ergonomic abomination to ME. I fully understand 
many people like them.

To each their own, but if that is “making drop bars work”, it’s not for me. I’m 
not afraid of short stems either. But, hey, it’s all about what works for each 
individual. I just think the new longer bikes are designed for swept back bars, 
and if you are near the bottom end of the pbh range for a given size, most 
folks are going to consider it a compromise or worse to try running drop bars 
on them.

I’m interested to see what the new Hillborne color will be. The black/cream 
ones were great.

The newest MIT Atlantis models do seem to have gotten even longer than the 
first round. I personally wouldn’t be able to fit dropbars to one without it 
going a size too small, and having way more stem and seat post than I would be 
happy with (short stem notwithstanding). I do hope the new Hillbornes haven’t 
gotten longer. The roster is pretty chock full of long bikes. Could be what 
others want, though. Who knows?

[RBW] Can we talk about long wheelbases?

There is a point at which a bike that is long enough that it becomes a 
specialty bike similar to a tandem or a long tail cargo bike. Very useful but 
at the same time limited. If a bike is difficult to park in places I need to 
park it, or is too long for my car or public transportation, then it’s 
usefulness is limited to me. I wish it were otherwise, as a 59 Clem (my size) 
looks like a fun bike to ride, but it is a BIG bike. I almost bought a Clem 
anyway, but changed my mind because of the impracticality. I know a lot of 
supporters of these long bikes think that people who hesitate just need to ride 
one, but that’s not the issue for many. They are simply too long to be 
practical fir some people, in some cases only realizing this after buying one.
For ME, a new Homer is pushing the limits of how long a bike I can practically 
use. I wish Rivendell well with these bikes, especially as they seem very 
committed to exploring how long they can go, but I hope they keep some bikes 
with more Roadini like dimensions in their stable.

to move the canti brake posts down. The existing brake posts would be too high

Believe it all. There just isn't one answer that fits everyone's situation. 
Yes, someone has fit 38's in a Roadini, despite Rivendell recommending 35mm 
as the max. That doesn't mean Rivendell was too conservative, it just means 
someone was willing to fit a 38 in there with very little clearance for 
debris, out of true rims, etc. (the pictures I saw showed a TIGHT fit). 
It's all about how little clearance you're willing to accept (or how much 
risk). On frames with that brake reach, 28mm with fenders and 35mm without 
are always going to be the safe bet. 32mm with fenders can probably fit 
too, but probably only with well setup fenders and no venturing offroad 
(where debris might get caught between fender and tire, causing a lockup). 
I've had a front fender get jammed, and when that fender accordions up to 
the fork crown, you are over the bars faster than you can imagine.

There are a lot of factors to consider if you want 32mm tires and fenders. 
Do your brakes hang down low enough that you can't get your fenders snug up 
against the fork crown and chainstay? For most sidepulls, the answer is 
probably yes, and it's safer to stick with 28's. Centerpull brakes are your 
friend here, as they typically leave more clearance. My vintage Trek with 
similar clearance will fit 32's and fenders using Dia Compe 610 centerpull 
brakes, but no modern dual pivot sidepull I tried left enough room (at 
least with clearance I was comfortable with). The type of fenders can make 
a difference, and tire width/height varies from manufacturer to 
manufacturer, plus the rims the tires are mounted on can change the 
dimensions.

This is the root of why I can’t have a long chainstay Rivendell bike. Without 
getting a much larger vehicle with much worse fuel economy, I cannot ever 
transport a bike that long (especially with fenders). I have an 89cm pbh, so 
I’m definitely in the large size range. A 59 Clem is not feasible on the public 
transportation here either.

I am sure they ride great, and almost got a 59 Clem anyway, but realized if I 
couldn’t put it in the car ever, or the racks on local buses/trains, it would 
seriously limit my usage.

My ‘83 Trek is theoretically the same brake reach as a Roadini, and I ran 
Tektro 539’s for a while. 35mm Paselas on CR18 rims were very tight for me 
without those brakes. Closer than I was comfortable with, while the original 
single pivot Dia Compes fit no problem, and probably could have taken a 37 or 
38. I like the 539’s as brakes, but they do encroach on tire/fender clearance 
more than a lot of other brakes.

[RBW] Roadini Clearance

If it does fit, it’s likely to have the best clearance with a centerpull brake 
like the Dia Compe 610 or one of the Pauls. I have seen someone fit 
Compass/Rene Herse 38’s, but it was very tight. I know they fit 35’s without 
fenders, as does my similar brake reach ‘83 Trek. I suspect to some degree, it 
may come down to how little clearance you’re willing to accept, and how 
accurately sized gravel king 38’s are on your rims. The fork crown and rear 
brake bridge are probably where it will be tightest.

I love the top tube panniers, and I think my top tube is long enough to keep my 
knees away from them, but I wonder how much they would mess with my downtube 
shifters. Downtube shifters were the norm for derailleur equipped bikes when 
those were designed, so maybe I should just get out a tape measure and see. The 
Rough Stuff folks seemed to like them. They look like they would be good for 
snacks, small camera, etc.

I am currently running a pair of R539 brakes on my '83 Trek, and at least 
in the front, they are the limiting factor in fender/tire clearance. Dia 
Compe 610's offer several millimeters of additional clearance over the 
539's. I think if you want maximize clearance with that kind of brake 
reach, you need to go to centerpulls (or have canti posts brazed on).

I have had a front fender accordion on me before, so I like conservative 
clearance with fenders. Others may be more comfortable pushing the limits.

I wonder if they are actually any wider than a 48cm Noodle. They state 50cm 
c-t-c at the ends. Noodles are 48cm c-t-c at the lever clamps - with the 4 
degree flare, they must be close to 50cm at the ends. The other 
measurements seem very close to the Noodle as well. I wonder if they aren't 
just a SimWorks branded 48cm Noodle.

If you mean the Nitto RM-013 Dirt Drops, the listed size is measured at the 
ends, where the Noodle sizes reflect the width at the hoods. The RM-013 
flares at the ends of the drops a little more. I think a 48cm Noodle is 
actually 48cm at the hoods, where the 52 RM-013 is closer to 46cm at the 
hoods.

I suspect that what brakes to see using will be part the deciding factor. 
Centerpulls typically help maximize clearance at the crown and bridge as 
compared to dual pivot sidepulls, but they're not all the same. How much space 
do you have between the top of your 32mm tires and the brake?

If you look at the geometry charts, Grant does use slightly different 
geometry for different wheel sizes (especially noticeable is differing HTA 
and fork rake). I think he tries to tune the handling feel nearly the same 
regardless of wheel size. Obviously, acceleration might feel different with 
smaller wheels, but I bet they handle pretty similar otherwise.

I don't have a Rambouillet, but I think your experience is about what to 
expect from any bike designed for 57mm reach brakes. Under best case 
scenario, you might fit 32mm tires and fenders, but clearance will be 
tight. I think the intention is for 28mm max tire size with fenders, and 
35mm (maybe 37 in some cases) without fenders.

I’ve never had more than 75psi in my Chinook Passes, but I only weigh 140 
pounds. I have the extra light version, and am a little over 1000 miles in, 
with no flats. I do find them noticeably nicer riding than the 28mm non-belted 
Paselas they replaced, but not necessarily dramatically so. I chalk that up to 
the unbelted Paselas still being a really nice riding tire for the money. My 
only gripe with them is that the tread pattern picks up debris in the rain, and 
it slowly works its way in, causing flats. In a decade or more of riding them, 
almost every flat I had (not many) was in November and December (first 2 months 
if Seattle’s rainy season). After December, it seems it’s rained enough to wash 
most of the debris off the roads. If it was less rainy here, I’d probably still 
ride them in 28’s. I do still ride 26x1.75 Paselas on my old mountain bike.

Personally, I would consider the extra clearance a plus. That's commonly a spot 
where fender clearance is reduced by brake interference. I understand not 
wanting that if you don't plan on ever fendering the bike, or don't want to 
maximize tire size, but I'd personally only consider it a problem if it had 
REDUCED clearance.

Centerpulls are going to be your best bet as far as minimizing brake 
interference with fork crown clearance. I think you'd have to go used to find a 
set under $100, although the new Dia Compe dc610's are worth it.

I currently run Tektro r539's on my '83 Trek 520, and they DO reduce my 
available clearance. I have plenty of clearance for 28mms tires with fenders, 
but it would be too tight for my taste with 32's.

These IRD brakes are in your budget and claim good fender and tire clearance, 
and the shape of the arms looks promising, but I guess it also depends on how 
far below the bolt they hang.

The Jones LWB shows a long wheelbase can be successfuly used on a mountain 
bike. I bet it will at least be long in the rear center - I’m curious what the 
front end geometry will be like. I would bet that Grant will want to balance 
the stability and “in the bike” feeling of a longer rear with some nimbleness 
in the front. It will be interesting to see how much of that comes from head 
tube angle and how much from fork rake.

Regarding the name, all I came up with were dumb nonsense names that surely 
aren’t correct. Someone else will have to figure it out!

Seconding this. I've used CR18's (and previously Sun M13's as well) for 
years. Most tires have been no problem, although some were a little tight 
with cloth rim tape. Switch to something thinner like tubeless tape and you 
shouldn't have a problem.

Similar feelings here. I also had a set mounted on VO Porteur bars. I found 
that if you grabbed the curved end portion hard in an emergency braking 
situation, the levers could rotate on the bars, causing the lever to bottom 
out against the bars. This led to a very scary near crash for me. I 
couldn't seem to tighten the band clamp enough to make them feel safe and 
secure to me.

[RBW] Re: MIT Homer pre-order

I just saw the samples in person. I was killing time waiting for a flight back 
to Seattle this evening, and took BART out to RBW, since I wanted to pickup 
some new Dia Compe 610’s.

Will showed me the new Taiwan Homers, and they look great! A little more 
upslope, and longer, but proportional to size chainstays. Will did say they 
take 27.2 seatpost. These look like a hell of a bike for the money. I am 
seriously thinking of getting serious about saving, selling stuff, whatever I 
need to do to get one. I didn’t think I’d like the color, but was completely 
won over in person. Don’t think there’s any corners cut by being made overseas 
- these are beautiful bikes.

Will offered me a test ride, but it was very smoky today, and I have lung 
issues, otherwise I expect I’d be telling you how great they ride. I’ve always 
wanted an Atlantis, but I may have converted that desire to a Homer.

[RBW] New Dia Compe 610s on Redwood.

Looking good. I'm hoping to visit Rivendell soon, and think I'm going to pickup 
a set myself. I'm going to put them on my '83 Trek 520. I've had my old 610's 
in there in the past, but like how much nicer the new ones look, and also like 
the idea of smoother lighter action.

No need to be sorry - nobody claimed a HiteRite is everything a modern 
dropper is. I just said I think they work better than some might give them 
credit for, and I don't think anyone else said or implied much different. 
Happily use your dropper judgement free - I bet their fun to use!

Your Bombadil looks really good! I am generally not super big on that light 
silvery blue color, but the contrasting dark blue heartburn wins me over. I 
would take one like that in a heartbeat. It's funny how such a small detail can 
change your while impression of something.

Hite Rites are kind of awesome low tech wonders. Yeah, modern droppers have 
more functionality, but Hite Rites work better than I bet a lot of people would 
expect.

I don't have one, so can only speculate, but Sam Hillbornes are supposedly 
somewhere in between the Homer and the Atlantis on the stoutness scale. Now 
that they're offered with canti/V brake posts, they supposedly clear 48mm 
tires too. They also build up great as touring, trail, or road bikes.

I feel you on the featherweight thing. I'm between 5' 11" and 6 feet, at 
about 140 pounds or less. Most bikes my size these days are way sturdier 
than I need, even loaded. I wonder what people take with them touring. I've 
never brought more than 30 pounds, even in the mountains for 5 days. I 
guess cans of beer add up pretty quick!

Both my bikes are standard diameter tubing. A 1983 Trek 520, with 
.09/.06/.09 Reynolds 501 tubing, and a 1987 Trek Antelope with Tange 
unbutted .09 tubing. They feel pretty right to me, and I like the look of 
skinny tubes too.
