[RBW] Another Riv in Dallas!

2021-08-06 Thread Fred Craven
Paul, I've only once ever seen another Riv in Dallas, but now that I know
you are here, maybe we will cross paths someday. During the week, I can be
found commuting from about downtown to and back Addison via White Rock, and
on the weekend I'm down in Cedar Hill. But right now, my bike is awaiting a
new bottom bracket cup...such little things.

Fred,
Duncanville, TX.

[RBW] Re: "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-07 Thread Fred Craven
Update: Great help. I've been swamped at work so I haven't been able to
reply to the thread yet.

So far I have been reminded that Layering is key (I knew that) and y'all
have given me several options in the wool/"not wool" realm. This is really
helpful, actually. I hope to buy some stuff as soon as I can. The ability
to wash something easily is helpful, but so is not stinking.

WIND, yes, that is my key enemy, I think, cold wind. Sure, I'll make a goal
of it to go out in snowy conditions, but we rarely get that around here.
It's the cold dry stuff with the cutting wind that I need to consider.

More comments to come later.

[RBW] "Winter" clothing help

2017-12-05 Thread Fred Craven
It's fast approaching winter I would like to keep riding to work. My
problem is that I don't have any appropriate winter cycling clothing. 30
years ago, I had some wool tights and jerseys, with layers that worked just
fine.

I can go "all cyclist" and get fancy winter cycling clothes on line or at a
LBS (We have several good LBS' in our area); however, I would like to keep
to the spirit of a stealth "Rivendell" look if at all possible. Currently I
layer up with various regular daily clothing. I don't have proper face
protection, and I don't have proper gloves...I don't have proper anything,
really. The wind simply cuts through.

I'm in the Dallas area, so we really haven't had much cold yet, but I would
like to be able to ride comfortably in the 40s. I know that many of you do
that. I'm open for suggestions.

[RBW] Re: Anyone have a sub-25lb. complete Rivendell?

2017-08-30 Thread Fred Craven
In today's lightweight-breakable-plastic world it's easy for people to
forget how light steel can be. Sure, Rivendell bicycles often weigh more,
but they are built to last, and have more stuff attached to them. Back in
the day...(OK, circa 1986) 20 pound steel bikes were available, and 22
pound bikes were readily available, *and* weights always *included* pedals
and seats.

When my custom arrived from Joel (I bought it used from him) I weighed it
without any of it's livery, just the bike with everything needed for
riding...22 lbs for a 56cm. Once loaded and with some heavier tires it's a
bit more, that's true.

My question is, "How much would all these other bike weigh with racks,
water bottles, a pump, tools, a bag or two, a change of cloths?"

The new Brooks is a little pricy but the Harrier that I bought looks good
and fits really well. I don't like the flat black (the only color they
offered with the early release), other than that it's great. They also make
a "commuter" model, the Island, which also looks great. Hidden under their
Brooks badging they are made by Kask.

[RBW] Re: 56cm or 58cm Atlantis

2016-04-10 Thread Fred Craven
Just to throw something into the mix. That issue about being stretched out
is all too complicated to me. I should ride a 58 by Rivendell standards,
but my Arms–my arms. They are just a wee too short. This slight variation
in body proportion has made my life subtly out of proportion. Suit coats
and shirts are always too long, the steering wheel is alway too far away,
and so are handlebars. So...

I was delighted to buy a used custom Rivendell from Joel Stern (as seen
here on this forum) with a "Short" top tube. Turned out to work great for
me. Like you, I have a long torso, but my arms... IF I could lean over into
a more aero position (like when I was 18) then it wouldn't be a problem. In
fact I think my long torso just makes it worse because my arms have to
start higher.

Anyway, best of luck in your decision.

Oh, I'm 5' 10" with an 84 PBH, and a 32" sleeve length.

[RBW] Note to self, cold weather and pedal installation.

2016-01-27 Thread Fred Craven
Last night, well yesterday, two things arrived. My new VP-001 Pedals and My
RR44. Yay!

The Reader is fun, it's nice to have a throwback to the days of newsletters
that are printed.

Now to the pedals. I purchased them because I need some more support for my
foot. The historically wonderful, and most awesome, Campy Record pedals are
awesomely awesome, but there isn't much support for my non-cleated feet. To
make matters more interesting/challenging I have short wide feet that angle
out--they always have. Yep, I have duck feet. Small duck feet, but duck
feet just the same. So, I got the VP-001 in hopes that they would do me
well.

Of course I was excited to install them, but they simply didn't want to go
in. I got them in the threads, but wow were they tight.
.
.
It was only later that realized that SCIENCE RULES.
The bike was in the cold garage, and
the pedals were in the warm house.
When I went to install them

I'm looking forward to giving them an actual ride.

[RBW] Custom Paint: Army Green or Tuxedo Black?

2016-01-03 Thread Fred Craven
Ok, I'll play.

There are lots of beautiful black bikes, a lot of beautiful black Rivendells.
So, I say go green. You can worry about what shade and hue. Definitely cream on
the head tube because it's a Rivendell and it looks sublime.

As mentioned above, go for black components. I typically don't think of that
for Rivs but in this case it meets you description. Now, that tends to move me
more to a mid-toned olive so you can have more contrast.

For fun, I really like the idea of a couple bright red "things" because red and
green are complementary after all.

Gloss, keep it gloss.

If you really want it to look good (and don't mind a surprise) leave it in
Grant and or Joe to decide. Kind of like going into a restraunt and saying
"chef's choice". Unless you are really good with colors, you can often get a
better result by letting the so called "experts" tweak your final color. So,
"some dark green khaki" might be a good description. My front door is a Dutch
green which one might call "Green that's so dark it almost looks black until
the light hits it just right."

Best of luck, it will be intriguing to see the final result.

[RBW] Re: Groceries and baskets

OK, so far I'm getting the idea that a rear rack/basket/pannier is better
than front for carrying a few groceries, especially given the fact that my

as fine as long as I don't load it up too much. All of the comments are

[RBW] Groceries and baskets

2015-10-12 Thread Fred Craven
Front or rear?

Now that I'm able to ride a reasonably short distance without cardiac arrest, I
desire to go to our local grocery store and pick up a few items for dinner (and
you can be sure that I will get wine cheese and baguettes at least once).

To facilitate this chore I will need "on bike" storage: most likely a basket.
But where to put it, front or rear? My Rivendell Road Bike is of the generation
where extra braze-ons were not standard fare. But that's not a problem. I think
a front basket looks awesome, but rear storage might be more stable. As I'm
utterly ignorant on the ramifications of this choice so I welcome your
opinions.

The geometry is Riv-road, with a delightfully short top tube (thanks to Joel).
I'm not sure if that affects things, but that's the situation.

[RBW] non-destructive complete removal of tag in MUSA moleskin shirt - anyone know how?

Re: [RBW]Bike shop ridiculousness, was Test ride Sam in Dallas?

2015-09-14 Thread Fred Craven
Anne, I suffered a mild shock the first time I walked into RBM because it's
huge. One thing to note about Oak Cliff Bicycles is that they are small.
"Micro" compared to RBM. If one is used to that RBM's hugeness, and then goes
into a normal bike shop, that too might cause some shock. In other words, their
stock of brands and sizes is reduced.

Also, parking...expect to have to hunt.
Valet is usually available.
I'm just saying.

Finally, once you (she) gets there, some of the best pizza in Texas is right
across the street.

[RBW] Fenders: Cream or Silver?

2015-08-20 Thread Fred Craven
I put wider tires on my Rivendell and the existing fenders are, now, too
narrow. So, I'm getting wider ones.

Silver is an old standby (very nice; classic) But I also like the idea of
cream fenders.
Does the Cream match, or mostly match, the Riv Headtube Cream?

Since Rivendell sells the cream, I assume that it looks fine, but I
appreciate your input.

[RBW] Re: Liquid Proofide?

2015-08-18 Thread Fred Craven
Follow up.

Thanks for all the input, it was/is very helpful. Yes, the refrigerator
seemed to do the trick. I guess it's just that cold in England.

I shared the information with Rivendell, and they are taking care of me.
They had never heard of the proofide arriving in as a liquid. The issue
here was/is ultimately the surprise at the liquid nature. It simply never
got to any form of solid until the refrigerator, and the spilling/leaking
in the box was a little annoying. But all is good. My bike is arriving
tonight, not tomorrow. And I'm like a little boy waiting for a giant scoop
of ice-cream.

[RBW] Let the Little Children Come Unto Me

2015-08-18 Thread Fred Craven
I am a 10-year-old boy on Christmas morning. The bike didn't arrive until 9 PM.
But she arrived. Beautiful, green, shining, and wrapped in swimming pool
noodles.

Of course this means becoming preoccupied with getting her assembled. It also
means: having the realization that I need to be at work tomorrow an hour and a
half earlier than normal to take care of a project for a very sensitive client.
Sometimes being an adult sucks--but I have a bike!

I have received nothing but great service and cordiality from: Joel Stern,
Harris Cyclery, and Rivendell, the guy I bought the Paul comp breaks from on
eBay, and my more-than-patient non-cyclist wife.

Pictures will come later until then suffice it to say that I am a giggly little
boy.

[RBW] Liquid Proofide?

2015-08-17 Thread Fred Craven
My new Brooks saddle arrived last week. Yesterday, I finally had the chance to
unboxed it. It's beautiful...and the Proofide is liquid. Some of it spilled in
the box. I'm guessing that it reached some extreme temperature on it's a
journey to Texas on the UPS truck that it doesn't want to go back to a solid
form on its own.

Has anyone else dealt with this?
Anyone know how to reconstitute the Proofide?

Fred

And the rest of the bike arrives Wednesday.

[RBW] Homer in green?!

2015-08-16 Thread Fred Craven
Hmm, could that be Joel Green? I'll know soon, when my Joel Green Riv arrives
from Massachusetts.

[RBW] Re: DFW shops

2015-08-07 Thread Fred Craven
Thanks John.
Between the time I sent the question and it being posted (I'm still under
probation as newbi, and that's OK) I stopped by Oak Cliff and discovered
that they will probably be my go-to place.

[RBW] DFW shops

2015-08-06 Thread Fred Craven
Now that I'm about to become a Rivendell owner I have the dilemma of where to
get bike stuff locally. Do any of you know of a Rivendell friendly bike shop in
the Dallas area?

[RBW] Re: Ballad of the short arms

2015-07-31 Thread Fred Craven
Handelbar plan: Noodle, because I like them, I know how to ride them.
Setup of said bars: Normally with Shimano Tiagra road brakes, and maybe
Tektro interrupters (always wanted something like that).
Saddle height: I don't know, I didn't even know there was a high low
option. Not very high. Comfortable enough for a moderate cadence.
Current Bike: Dead, buried, stollen, well remembered.

*My* last bike was the antithesis of Rivendell (except that it was steel),
it was the forerunner of what time trial bikes are today. I used the bike
long after I was young and eager to go fast, but it was always TO
Stiff, and the handle bars were always way too low: early cow horns. It
stretched me out something fierce. Other bikes that I have ridden were more
comfortable, and larger, but I was still stretched out. My arms are
literally two inches shorter than they should be. Even baby strollers are
*just* out of my reach; most chair arms are too low to support my elbows
(unless I slouch a lot); and if I sit my with my butt flat on the floor and
my back straight, my knuckles don't touch the ground. That old custom bike
was designed well for what it was but the builder was new…

[RBW] Ballad of the short arms

2015-07-27 Thread Fred Craven
My first post, yay!

I am currently considering the purchase of a used bike from another forum
member. His bike has a unique feature in that the top tube is short. 56cm dt
and tt. My body has a unique, and sometimes annoying, feature and that I have
tyrannosaurus Rex arms. – – about 2 inches shorter then all of my shirts and
all steering wheel columns.

Historically I rode a 56 cm frame. 54 was too small 58 too big. However,
Rivendell sizes frames more generously. This means that a 56 cm frame may
actually be too small but then there's the thing with the short top tube in
my short arms.

The seller and I have about the same PBH mine's 83+ he's 83-, our arms are the
same length: around 32(sleeve length). But I'm 4 taller--mostly in the torso.
(5'6 vs 5'10).

So, what do you think? Is this a sure you will be fine or no, it won't work
situation?

When I was younger and more limberer I was always way too stretched out, but
I could do it (My custom frame builder thought it was a good thing at the
time). That's never going to happen again.

Of course a shorter stem is in the works as well. I have read all the
literature on the website and I've seen all the measures. If I was ordering a
new bike I might-could go with the 58 cm frame instead. But I'm looking for
input in the context of a used bike that is lovely, less expensive, needs to be
ridden and may fit my silly arms.
