2019-04-04 Thread Howard Ramsay
Please look on the RBW website for the Stem - Nitto DirtDrop (MT-10) 8cm X
26mm with a 22.2 mm quill. You will be able to have plenty of height
adjustment and the proper clamp size. I do not know what angle of the
extension you wish for your bicycle. There are other models listed on the
RivBike and NITTO websites. The important thing is that you are
comfortable. Take a look here for detailed measurements. Remember your bar
clamp diameter is 26.0mm with the NITTO Noodle bars. Hope this helps.

[RBW] SUPPORT YOUR BICYCLE COMPANY

2019-03-11 Thread Howard Ramsay
I believe one way I can help RBW survive is to shop their website. Sure,
I can comparison shop for a "better deal" online for a pair of brake
levers, a saddle and seat post, or sets of tires. It seems so easy to buy
something from someone down the road, or ebay. I may even save ten dollars
or so doing these things. At the end of the day what do I really care
about? A faceless web page peddling items from multinational
corporations? A glitzy business selling big box bikes and accessories to
people who really don't know any better? I care about quality and
craftsmanship. I care about a parts selection that are going to work on my
bicycles the first time, every time. I care about being able to count on
that company being there. The time to buy a quality bicycle and parts is
when they are available.
Writing this reminded me of a song that is on
point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBh-m1yTZS0

[RBW] Re: Rust proof question

2018-11-14 Thread Howard Ramsay
Should you desire to keep your bicycle forever consider a full disassembly.
If you do the application yourself, assemble everything you will need
before starting. Buy a small blanket to work on. Work in an uncluttered,
well ventilated area. USE EYE PROTECTION. Allow enough time. Do one coat,
then a second later while the bicycle is still apart. Apply the *J.P.
Weigle Frame Saver*, let it cure for one day while you clean, polish, and
lubricate all the other parts and true the wheels. Then apply a second

Re: [RBW] Re: removing broken hex bolt from rack mount

2018-07-16 Thread Howard Ramsay
Jason, here is a tip I learned working on similar screws over the last 50
years. Tape off the surrounding painted area. Apply a couple of drops of
penetrating lubricant to both sides of the damaged screw. Using a ⅛" drill
bit Carefully start a hole in the CENTER of the damaged screw. Slowly drill
into the damaged screw head approx. ¼ inch. Now Reverse the drill
direction to remove the bit. (As you do so the screw may self extract.)
Carefully repeat using the next size bit. Should you find you need to use a
Screw Extractor may I recommend Alden Grabit, available at Lowe's, Home
Depot, and Amazon. Remove the card on the inside of the case and Look
carefully at the pictures Twice before using the extractor. Note which end
of the tool is used first. The tool is only operated in the Reverse
direction. With a hole predrilled into the center of the damaged screw, it
should come out quite easily without damage to your paint. Here is a link:

It's a kind of delicate job with many opportunities to screw it up. I

on that frame forever. If it's pretty important, I'd recommend you find
somebody who has done this repair before, can put their hands on it, look
it over, and quote you a price. It's money and effort well-spent if it's
 important that you succeed.

If you are determined to try it, here are several thoughts:

 1. The bolt is not aluminum. It's stainless steel. If the bolt was
aluminum it would be a far easier job.
 2. Did you break the bolt? If so, describe the situation. Did it
thread in easy and smooth, and when it started getting tight, you leaned
 on
it and it broke? Did you install it 5 years ago and then it broke while
you were riding? Did somebody else install it five years ago, so you have
no idea how easily it went in? Were you forcing it in, because the
 threads
are full of paint? All this contextual information will give you a hint
 at
how hard it will be to remove the bolt.
 3. You will start by dimpling the bolt as close to center as you can.
Some people use a drift punch to make a dimple. Some may use a center
drill. Building a good support fixture and using a drill press would have
a much higher chance of success, which is one of the reasons why I'd
 consider paying somebody
 4. The larger the hole you can center drill into the center of the
bolt shaft, the better, for the most part. A bigger hole gets you more
contact area for your easy out. Sometimes with a big hole you can clear
out the rest of the material with a tap. But since you are already
borrowing a drill, you presumably don't have either an easy out or a tap.

I'd really strongly recommend at least having a good mechanic look at
it. If a good mechanic charged you <$50 to do the job, I'd recommend you
pay him. Otherwise you might be spending $30 on tools that you may

The levers are sold Howard, sorry. I've been out of town and not been able to

[RBW] Re: What type of bike would make you buy another riv

2018-02-06 Thread Howard Ramsay
Ann, consider messaging Rivendell and discuss a custom build using the
Roadeo geometry and tubing specifications. You can request the Roadeo lugs,
paint, decals, and head tube badge should you desire. It will be a little
more expensive than the standard size Roadeos, but it will be a custom
built Roadeo just for you. Uniquely yours, and a perfect fit. We only live
once. Another option is a Roadini painted to your liking. The custom paint
is $300 and worth every penny. All the best to you!

[RBW] CHEVIOT For Me

This is the bike I plan to build from Rivendell. The step through design
will aid me when I am no longer able to comfortably ride my classic
BRIDGESTONE bikes and my Harley. My pelvis is (actually) bolted together,
and swinging my leg over the top tube will become harder as the years
progress. Quality bikes are more expensive year to year, so purchasing now
makes financial sense. I will ask for a few custom touches, have the bike
assembled, tested, then shipped to me in Longview, Texas. I like the RBW
Blue, the frame style is classic and very well made. The lugs are lovely,
the fork is fantastic, the brakes are basic, and the braze-ons are
bountiful. Accessorizing this build will include fenders, racks, lighting,
a basket, a bell, and a kickstand. I have been researching the build parts
this weekend. Rivendell has parts o'plenty to pick from, with a Chevoit -
2017 Pre-Sale, web specials, coupon codes, Rivendollars, and a LET'S HELP
CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM two for one credit from Grant Petersen. More info here:
My community is improving intersection lighting, creating bike paths along
existing walking trails, and dedicated bike lanes on new roadways. The
local bike shop has a regular group of cyclists who come together for easy
rides. Each spring they set up a training program for new riders, building
up skills and strength, promoting esprit de corps, and helping to prevent
injuries. Some guys and gals compete in local area races of different types
and competition levels. There is a large number of teens riding single
track and gravel grinding, with great support from the local communities.
Most all these people ride new style bikes, carbon and aluminium frames,
multi-suspension mountain bikes, etc. Not my style, but at least they are
riding. I am blessed to live here. ♥ More to come as the parts are
selected and the frame arrives. Howard Ramsay - Longview, TX
