[RBW] Weight of Hunqapillar frame?

2012-05-03 Thread Jeffrey
Does anyone know the weight of the Hunqa frame by itself? I can't find
it on the Riv site.

[RBW] Re: Weight of Hunqapillar frame?

2012-05-07 Thread Jeffrey
I'm the OP, and I take NO offense at the wieght weenie jabs!

It may be of interest to know why I asked, and its not because I was
looking for a light-weight ride. I have a black '92 Bridgestone MB-6,
and I compared the geometry to the Hunq and found that they are very
similar with 2-3 differences. So I now conceive of my MB-6 as a poor
man's Hunq (bought it for $75). To my surprise, my 49 double-butted
Tange CroMo MB-6 weighs 7.25 lbs. (fork and frame), and the 58 Hunq
weighs 9 lbs. according to this thread. What a surprise!! I wasn't
trying to see if I could shave off a few grams or anything, I just
wanted to see if I am pedaling a battle-axe around. Turns out its not
so heavy!

So go buy an early Bridgestone MB and Hunq it out! (Kidding...I'm sure
the Hunq has a much better ride).

I'll post a pic here, let me know if there's interest.

[RBW] Re: Weight of Hunqapillar frame?

2012-05-07 Thread Jeffrey
Wow, I started a thread and it went into flames...how entertaining!!

The OP not offended, so this is fun to watch. ;-)

I asked the question because I can't afford a Hunq right now. So... I
have have been building my '92 Bridgestone MB-6 as a poor man's Hunq.
I compared frame dimensions of both bikes and they are very, very
similar. I figure this old piece of tig-welded steel MUST be heavier
than the Hunq and guess what? According to the '92 catalogue on
Sheldon Brown's site the frame weighs 5.5 #'s, the fork 1.75# = 7.25
#'s. Is it possible it's really lighter than the Hunq?!? Surprising.

I'm no weight weenie, but I am glad to know I'm not riding around on a
Sherman tank.

[RBW] Re: I copied Grant's Uber-Mark-mod

2012-05-29 Thread Jeffrey
This is very cool! I have a Mark's rack with the smaller Wald basket
that Riv offers that holds my small Sackville bag. I don't have a boss
on the fork and use the crimps on the fork. When I load the bag with
heavy groceries that basket moves quite a bit an upsets the steering.
I was thinking of getting a longer strut to attach to the front fork
axle stays for stability, and this tells me that may solve the problem
if I keep the other strut in place. So I don't think this is a
"problem looking for a solution" but maybe others have had a similar
issue.

[RBW] Re: Simple dreaming

2011-05-16 Thread Jeffrey
My first Riv, my first build of any kind. I'm a bit nervous.

56 CM SimpleOne designed to ride a 20 mile round trip commute over
hills, in all weather, with a bag for stuff, as light, clean and cheap
as possible.

Interface
**
Bars - Albatross on Nitto 11cm Technomic, stem with cork grips. If
this doesn't work I'll try some down bars.
Seat - Brooks B17 black
Seat Post - yes
Pedals - MKS Touring with Power Grips
Brake - One front Tektro MTB with Tektro CR720 cantilevers

Drivetrain
**
Rear hub - Sturmey-Archer S2C two-speed kickback with coaster brake
Cog - 17 tooth(?)
Crank - TBD

Wheels
*
May have Rich build these, or a local guy. Nothing special.

Bolt On
*
Rack - Nitto Mini Front
Bag - Some Rando style TBD.
Fenders - SKS or if I can find some green painted fenders!
Light - IXON IQ Speed

That's it! Very curious and a bit nevous about the S-A S2C hub, hope
it works.Any experience here with these or someone considering the
same?

Is there a rando bag that with work with Albatross bars?

~ Cheers,

Jeff

2011-05-16 Thread Jeffrey
Patrick -
Thanks for the heads up about the front loading - I hadn't considered
that and am not married to a front bag. I'll consider a large saddle
bag. I'm starting with the Alba bar 'cuz I have one here, and will try
a Mustache and then drop if needed. I am also considering the S-A 3XS
(fixed) and will post when I've got and ridden either one. So many
excellent choices! Suggestions welcome - new to this stuff, really.

[RBW] protecting raw metal cranks

2011-07-01 Thread Jeffrey
I just removed the black anodization and rust from the cranks on my old
Bridgestone MB6 winter/beater/townie bike. They not stainless steel and are
a bit pitted.

Will they rust right up in my maritime climate?

What should I do to keep it from rusting?

Cover them in oil?

What kind of oil?

Thanks!

I have several large abrasions through the paint that have rusted. what do
you do to treat them? If I just paint/fingernail polish them will that stop

[RBW] Riv sighting in Nova Scotia

2012-07-16 Thread Jeffrey
I have only seen two Riv's in my short life -- one orange AHH frame from
afar hanging in the back of an MEC store, and a tourer driving by. Not a
lot of these types of bikes here in salty, icy Nova Scotia.

Yesterday I saw a couple cruising on a Betty Foy and an Atlantis. I wish I
could have stopped and gabbed, but a friendly "Nice Bike!" shouted out my
window was all I could muster.

Maybe someday I'll actually get to touch and ride one!

I came to the exact same conclusion. I have a Bridgestone MB-6 and after

Here are pics of my MB-6 in a couple of variations. I now have Alba's and a

comfy.

2010-09-26 Thread Jeffrey

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I was amazed (as usual) to find a
whole sub-culture of people on the internet who are fans of hammocks
on the site above. The hammock seems like a natural for bike touring
or S24O's - light and easy to set-up, and comfortable for many. My
only concern is the chilly nights we get up here in Nova Scotia. Will
keep researching.

Thanks everyone!

[RBW] Backpack maker mentioned in an old Reader?

2010-09-27 Thread Jeffrey
Grant was supporting a backpack manufacturer in a Riv Reader I once
read. Can somebody save me a little time and tell me if they recall
who that maker may be? I remember he touted them because they (the
designer) were first to develop a frameless pack (IIRC). They went out
of business for a time, then resurrected and now work out of the
Northwest, (I believe). I would like to support and "Originator".

[RBW] Tent advice needed for S24O?

2010-10-05 Thread Jeffrey
I am researching a tent to use mainly for S240's, and I am wond'ring
if on a short trip (<40-60km each way), if I would really notice the
difference between a tent that weighs 3 lbs., and one that weighs
6lbs? For 3 lbs. I can get an ultralight solo tent, for 6lbs. a
roomier 2-person. I'd like the space of a 2-person 'cuz its more
versatile, but not sure the extra weight is worth it?

Any experience/opinions out there?

[RBW] Re: Tent advice needed for S24O?

2010-10-07 Thread Jeffrey
Thank you all for the good information, and for pointing me to that
older post on tents. I really like the idea of the tarp tents and the
hammocks. I live in Nova Scotia -- the ground is rocky and the weather
is very unstable and gets nasty quickly...and cold. So I think the
double-walled free-standing tent is the best. I am just AMAZED at how
much variety there is out there. Just not sure if I want to make it a
solo or two-person tent. You guys on the west coast -- I envy you! I'm
an Angeleno by birth and would love to cycle in that stable and dry
environment!

[RBW] Tire clearance question: 44mm tires in 50mm stay?

2010-10-21 Thread Jeffrey
Would you put a tire that measures up at 44-46mm in a 50mm (2")
chainstay? This leaves approx. 3mm clearance a side. Is this too
close? My bike mechanic thinks so. I'm thinking of putting Big Apples
on my old MB-6 and the Apples measure up at 44mm according to the Riv
site. Would love to try the fat, cushy tires somehow.

[RBW] Re: 1988 or 1989 Bridgestone Trail MB-4 rehab questions

2015-05-25 Thread Jeffrey

I have an '84 MB-5 and have tried various stems and bars on it. I have had
a dirt-drop and Technomic stems, with Noodles, Albatross, Bullmoose and
Moustache bars. What I like best is close to a Velo Orange Tourist bar, but
a little more swept back. I have short legs and am 5'7" and found I was
always too stretched out and needed to get the bars back and up. One thing
I love about this bike is I can play around with it so much with all it's
clearance and braze-ons. It's so adaptable. Here is a pick of the bars I
like best, but I'm using a Nitto L-shaped stem now, not the Dirt-Drop
pictured. Enjoy it--you're bike is in excellent condition!

[RBW] Baby got new shoes ...

2014-03-02 Thread jeffrey kane
Cross-post from the 650b group :

I've been nursing a pair of Pari Moto's since mid-summer and the weather
has helped extend their life (read: much reduced riding around here since
December) … but I've been telling myself to p/u a new set o' tires for the
last month or so and had decided I go for those highly acclaimed Hetre EL's
for a change. This will be my 4th season riding 650b, much of it on Hetres
.. heck, I even commute on them year-round in NYC. So just as I was about
to pull the trigger I see the post from Compass and *voila*, enter the
Babyshoe Pass XL!

Took 'em for a little solo 45 mile loop over the GWB to parts north
yesterday in mid-30's temps on what was left of my November legs. Now, I'm
no expert tire reviewer but I know what I've come to like … and these last
few years on PM's and Hetres have been some of the most enjoyable of my
many years of riding.

So here's my deep bow of respect to Mr. Heine and his cohorts at Compass …
and a great many thanks for making life so damn good for so many of us in

Re: [RBW] Baby got new shoes ...

2014-03-02 Thread jeffrey kane
Hi Jim,

The fenders you see are Berthoud 650b x 50's. Mike Kone sells them out of
Boulder Bicycles. I have them on a Belriot also. The fit on either frame is
tight but requires almost not crimping, which, is saying a lot since
neither frame was optimized for 42's and fenders. The tire to fender
inner-edge clearance is also what some might consider to be on the tighter
side of ideal … but I think not by much. I've had both bikes set up this
way for 3+ years now and haven't had a problem ... and while I know that's
a hardly scientific assessment, my riding consists of plenty of unpaved
trails and year round NYC streets.

That said, I have a pair of similarly sized Honjo's like your hanging in my
garage. They fit 38's well but don't work for Hetres. If you have
questions, give Mike Kone a call … he's a great guy to hash out solutions
with.

[RBW] Re: SimpleQuickOneBeam Project - Blue Sky Features - What would you like to see?

2013-11-26 Thread jeffrey kane
Heck, this is easy for me: I'm short, just shy of 5'8" and while I can't
remember my PBH I do know that I fit beautifully on Riv 650b 54cm & 55cm
frames. The S/O simply wasn't sized small enough for me and therefor, I
don't own one.

I'd ask that GP stick to the simple tried-and-true geometry of the previous
iterations (no sloping top tubes, please) and make a 650b 54cm or 55cm
frame. Mind you, I wouldn't balk at a 700c only model if it fit. If that
happens, then I'm going to be in big trouble around the house … *(but it
will be worth it*) !!!

[RBW] Re: nice kids' bikes

2012-06-23 Thread jeffrey kane
My son is seven and rides a Fuji Ace 20. It's a beauty, he rides to school
nearly all year, which, is pretty good for a NYC kid.

Here's the bike:

http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/ace-203

I was a little weirded out by the 20" x 1"'s but like Thomas said, kids
kinda don't care and the bike is so cool looking that he gets compliments
on it all the time!

Here he is riding it to a nail biter of a photo finish last weekend at the
Harlem Skyscraper Classic Father's Day race:

http://nyvelocity.com/content/gallery/race-photos/2012/harlem-kids

btw: the Fuji comes in a 24" wheeled version with drop bars as well. As for
other kid bikes, I'd like to find him one of those Redline 24" wheel cross
bikes next as he'll outgrow the 20 in another year, I fear. Otherwise, Felt
makes a nice 24" racer type remember, kids like fast stuff ... and
they have their whole lives ahead of them to figure out the beauty of fat
road tires and fenders and such!

[RBW] Re: Saluki love & tires

2013-06-19 Thread jeffrey kane
Hetres will fit your Saluki front + back just fine. Fenders, on the other
hand, can be an issue. VO makes a few sizes ... you'll want to measure
yours first to be sure ... look for at last 52mm inside across the span. I
use 50mm SS Berthoud's (via Mike Kone's online store) on both a Saluki and
a Bleriot. There's some trade off in coverage but no problems with fit
anywhere.

[RBW] Re: East Coast frame painting

Hey BB,

Those are both beauties ... tell me (us) ... how durable would you say
the paint is? Will it hold up to street signs and U-Locks, that sort
of thing, or does it nick and scratch easily? And, btw: I'm not saying
nick and scratch easily is a bad thing, I'm just looking for something
durable for NYC style abuse, as I know the original poster is ...
(and I happen to have a house near Toms River).

[RBW] Re: can anyone relate--getting older (50) and back into cycling: finding drops not so easy...

2011-06-06 Thread jeffrey kane
Of course, this really all depends on what kind of riding you intend
to do. Around town or out on the road for 2 to 3 hours at a stretch?
Most importantly, keep in mind that 50 is like, the new 30 ... and the
minute you start suggesting to yourself that you're getting "older",
well ... I'd suggest taking your time, being patient and relearning to
love the drops.

Anyway, no doubt, you're going to get plenty of good suggestions
here!

Well, I ride a 54, so I'm def. on the small side. I've been using bar
end shifters but am looking to switch to DT's. Travel break down,
shorter cables, less cable housing, etc. are the motivation for me.
Anyone looking to move a pair of Dura Ace SL7700's (the straight lever
DT specific 9 speed type) please let me know and I'll snatch 'em up

Fussy? I don't know ...it is funny though ... but I also wonder why Riv/GP
feels the need to contribute to an already polarized community (cyclers in
general) ... while the button is innocuous enough in itself, all the
anti-this and anti-that stuff seems unnecessary. I can't help but think
whether you're into wearing "sausage skin clothing" or tooling around an a
$4000.00 artisanal "hobo" bike with a $25.00 basket ... that sort of thing
makes everybody come off looking silly.

[RBW] Re: A23 vs. Synergy

2012-08-10 Thread jeffrey kane
I had a pair of A23/650b wheels built by Anthony at Longleaf in June this
year. The Hetres and A23's are a hard fit ... first time I tried I really
suffered. Then I used a little dish-soapy water along the rim and bead and
overinflated them until I literally heard the bead "pop" into place. No
problems so far, well over a few hundred miles later (but I'm wondering how
this is going to play out along the side of the road one day).

Re: [RBW] Re: A23 vs. Synergy

2012-08-10 Thread jeffrey kane
Valid points, Steve.

I didn't exactly employ variable elimination when I tried the soapy water
either ... meaning it was also the first time I got the bright idea to over
inflate, too. Heck, I'm not even sure I could overinflate as much with my
road pump as I can with the floor pump I keep at home.

The Hetres in question are around 18 months old now and have seen around
3000 or 4000 miles. There's a 1/2" wide smooth spot in the center of the
rear that no longer shows ribbed tread (but the front looks pretty newish,
still). I'm thinking about picking up a new tire and putting it up front
and rotating the front to rear so I guess that "at home" test might just be
on the horizon.

2012-08-18 Thread jeffrey kane
Yes, the bridge is original and the frame has a nice rear cable hanger welded
in place as well ... this, I believe is because the first runs of these frames
predate the silvers or Tektro calipers. I've run both and found a little more
room for the fenders with the center pulls (particularly in front). Maybe the
side pull calipers are a little nicer feeling ... but not enough to be bothered
over.

[RBW] Nitto Noodle (B177) questions

2012-09-08 Thread jeffrey kane
Has anyone ever noticed a significant difference in the degree of curves on
the Noodle bar when comparing different widths? I have an older 46cm and a
brand new 44cm sitting side by side in front of me right now and am rather
surprised at two points:

First: the backward angle of the tops is considerably less on the 44 than
the 46
Second: the downward angle of the tops is also less on the 44 than the 46,
tho not quite as significant as the sweep back difference

Quick back story: I was perfectly happy riding the 46's but just kinda
thought they seemed (meaning looked) a bit wide on my 54/Saluki.
Eventually, I switched to a different 42 bar for the last 3 months and
while it seemed ridiculously narrow after being on the 46's, I didn't find
it uncomfortable in any negative way ... 42 matches my CF racing bike as
well so it's not like I wasn't used to the width. And the new 42 (GB Maes
1970's) has nice long flat ramp, which, I've always liked. Que in GP's "you
can used to anything" quote here ... anyway, while not uncomfortable on the
Maes, I couldn't help but think how much I missed the downward drop and
backward sweep of the old 46/Noodle and so I reasoned: 42 seems skinny,
lets get a 44/Noodle and ride all the way to heaven ... hence, my questions
above.

Look, I haven't mounted the 44 yet and I'm sure I'll be happy on it.
I'm also sure the manufacturing of these bends is insanely difficult but
still, the difference, particularly on the sweepback, is visually great
enough to make me ask if anyone else has noticed this or can comment with
any insight.

[RBW] Re: Rivs by city

2012-09-08 Thread jeffrey kane
In New York City, well, I bought my Bleriot last summer from a list member
in Bklyn. I ride it every day on my commute, lock it up up everywhere and
it does occasionally collect a few nods and comments of appreciation ...
but I can count on one hand the number of Rivs I've seen around town in the
past 2 1/2 years.

I live in Manhattan and well, the majority of shops here are concerned with
what you would expect for a large city with a staggering cost of doing
business ... that is, lot's of catering to the racer/carbon fiber end of
the market. There's a huge community of racer and racer wannabe's in the
greater NYC area. And honestly, it's beautiful. Everything I've ever
learned about cycling as an adult I've learned here. From commuting on the
first crappy Chinese mtb's back in the mid 80's to later being adopted by
Team Bklyn and then Team Gotham ... guys from every imaginable ethnicity
who graciously tolerated just how badly I sucked at mtb racing, cyclocross
racing and road racing ... NYC has given me everything I could have ever
asked for on a bike ... except for the seed of love planted by the feel of
wind on my face and beauty of leaving my troubles behind as a seven year
old who finally was able to get up on his two wheeled stingray ... but
that's another story.

I've (mostly) left my CF racer days behind and for the last year and a half
have been killing it on a 650b Saluki up and down the Hudson ... River
Road, 9W, Piermont, Nyack, Haverstraw by woods trail, Bear Mountian, etc.
... and while that bike picks up more compliments than a pretty girl in a
short skirt in midtown, again, I just nearly never see any Rivs on my
travels ... I know they're out there 'cause I read about 'em here ... but
invisible, we seem to be ...

[RBW] Re: Kid's bike

2012-09-08 Thread jeffrey kane
My son has been on a Fuji Ace 20 for almost a year now, he got it on his
sixth b-day. I found it online from a shop in FL. and it wasn't more than
$260.00 total, shipped. It's been great for him, he's learned to shift
(seven speed grip shift type on flat bars) and easily mastered hand brakes.
He was a little weirded out by the 20 x 1" tires but soon forgot all about
it after winning a race on father's day in Harlem ... kids, boys anyway, I
think, like to go fast! The thing pulls in compliments like a magnet also,
which, tends to build confidence in little guys. He's going to outgrow it
quick though. They make a 24" wheel version with drop bars and a 650c too.
I think Fuji makes a lot of them, which is why you can find them cheaply if
you noodle around on-line. Certainly less that the 24" Felt or the Redline
24.

Hey Joe,

I live on the UWS and frequent River Road to Piermont to Nyack to
Rockland, etc ... this past year, 95% of which on a Saluki. You're
right about the curb appeal of the Riv's in NYC, mine regularly gets
more compliments than a pretty dame in a short skirt. It's been a
great winter for riding and I expect to be out regularly in March.
Drop me an e-mail if you're looking to spin north.

[RBW] Re: Need a new floor pump

2012-11-30 Thread Jeffrey Newton
I have an SKS Rennkompressor. It's fantastic beyond description in every
way imaginable, will last forever, each and every part is replaceable, and
the base folds up so it's portable. It's made of cast iron, steel, wood
(handle) and top-quality German workmanship and ingenuity. There's a ton
of rave reviews on the 'net and they are spot on. And it's only $50! I
did a ton of research last year and this one was light years above
everything else. Buy one!
