This colorway reminds me of an old Raleigh Technium my friend has set up as

[RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2019-07-29 Thread Nick Ybarra
First, I'll say "ditto" to everything Drw said.

I owned an 84 expedition before purchasing my current canti-sam with double
top tube. I used the expedition as a commuter for a while before taking it
on a tour from Edmonton to Missoula. It performed fine fully loaded, but I
found it a little noodly on the climbs and squirrely on the descents. Not
too bad, but noticeable. Also, I am by no means a Clyde at 6'0", 135lbs.
My Sam is noticeably stiffer, and I much prefer how it rides with a load:
stable, predictable, smooth.

[RBW] Re: Thanks Grant

2018-06-22 Thread Nick Ybarra
Just a few quick responses:

1). Do you have cites for the second sentence? It does not appear to be
true:

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/immigration/sd-me-safe-country-20180518-story.html

The article gives a lot of pretty good reasons people might want to avoid
seeking asylum in Mexico. But, more to the point, it also notes that they
are not required to do so if they get there first. The only country we
have a "first safe country" agreement with is Canada.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada–United_States_Safe_Third_Country_Agreement

2) See above

3) This is a defensible position, although the last clause ("to eliminate
that possibility by letting those not eligible for asylum flee is an
affront to US citizens.") seems to be an exaggeration/misrepresentation.
The possibility is not eliminated, and there have been other solutions put
forward and attempted besides detention centers. For example, this very
reasonable and successful-sounding case management program discontinued
last year by the current administration:
https://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2017/06/ice-shuts-down-program-for-asylum-seekers/529887/

4)This isn't really fact so much as your opinion, with which I heartily
disagree. Again, the false claim about what asylum-seekers are required to
do.

I hope none of that came off as abusive.

Re: [RBW] Sackville Saddlesack Large or Medium?

2017-04-08 Thread Nick Ybarra
Just a counterexample. I've got a large on my double top tube cant Sam,
and I love it. I use it for commuting every day as well as touring and
camping rides. I agree it's extremely big, but I like having the option of
filling it up and don't really see a significant downside to having more
room.

If it were me, I'd get a large and test it out for a bit. If you don't
like it, you probably won't have trouble reselling it or even trading it to
someone with a medium who wants more volume.

bike. I've got it set up with fenders, 42c Marathons, Albatross bars,
dynamo lighting, front medium wald basket, rear large saddle sack, and
friction bar-end 3x9 gearing. This thing is comfortable and capable and
the bike I most often grab when I'm heading out the door.

2. Gaulzetti Cazzo - I'm in a cycling club, and on the weekends I often go
on road rides with some very fast friends. This is the bike that lets me
keep up with them, and, if I'm in decent shape, drop them every now and
then on the steep climbs ;). Constructed of light oversized steel tubing
and set up with Campy 10-speed, 27c slick tires, and light aluminum wheels.
This thing is a rocket-ship, and I love it.

3. Cooper Cycles (out of Portland, not to be confused with Ron Cooper)
rando - This is my rando/light touring bike. Set up with fenders, 35c Soma
New Xpress tires, and also Campy 10 speed, but much easier gearing than the
Cazzo with a White Industries 44 x 30 VBC crank. It's got low-trail
geometry, which I'm still getting used to but like so far, and several
options for bags. This bike is perfect for exploring the tiny towns that
dot the many beautiful but sometimes rocky dirt roads around Austin.

4. 2008 Salsa El Mariachi 29er - I've been trying to get more into
mountain biking lately even though I'm not very good at it and am much too
timid to take any aggressive lines or ride down anything remotely scary.
Set up full rigid with a 1x9 drivetrain. I actually picked this up from a
local guy who included some beautiful custom XPac frame bags he made for
it, and I dream of taking it out to Big Bend State Park to do some
multi-day bike camping. Some day

Other than that, I've got 2 frames in the attic:

-a 1983 Specialized Expedition that I might rebuild at some point and am
too in love with to let go
-a custom steel track frame a friend of mine built up for me about 11 years
ago that my knees won't really let me ride any more but which is too
beautiful and holds too much sentimental value for me to sell

And one frame in the stand that I'm currently building up: A really nice
531 Mercian road frame I just picked up that will be my around town bike
when I want to get somewhere fast. Just need to find a decent Campy rear
wheel to finish it off.

This stable seem to fulfill my current needs and is, conveniently, all that
will comfortably fit in the bike/laundry room in my current living space.
If I try to add another without moving something on, my girlfriend will
definitely start to grumble.

Re: [RBW] WTB Nitto R14 Rack with Tombstone

2017-04-03 Thread Nick Ybarra
Yeah, I'm kind of suspecting that Soma is the same and just using an old
picture for the product.

At the moment, I'm using a Nitto Big Bag Rack for saddlebag support, which
is a little overkill. I don't really mind that at all, but I'm going to be
shipping the bike for a trip soon, and I think it would be easier to pack
with an R-14 that can fold down compactly.

[RBW] WTB Nitto R14 Rack with Tombstone

2017-04-02 Thread Nick Ybarra
Hey y'all. I'm looking for the version of the Nitto R14 Top Rack *with a
tombstone* to use with my large Sackville Saddleback. Anyone have one
they're willing to let go or know of a place that still offers them?
 Thanks!

-Nick in ATX

P.S. - also still on the hunt for a pair of Snoqualmie Pass tires.

[RBW] Re: Are there a lot of Roadeos out there?

2016-07-26 Thread Nick Ybarra
Don, I believe I've got one of your old Roadeos, actually -- recently
acquired by way of Bruce S -- and I'm loving it so far. Currently, I'm
running the 700x35c Kojaks it came with, but am thinking of switching to
some slightly skinnier Compass tires or even some Ruffy Tuffys (I too am a
roadie and only weigh 140lbs). But yeah, with 44cm Noodles, the feel of
the bike is so, so comfortable.

Re: Zip ties (WAS Re: [RBW] Re: Wald Basket??)

2016-06-08 Thread Nick Ybarra
Just thought I'd throw in my experience. I've been using zip ties to
secure front baskets to front racks on my bikes for a number of years
because one time I bought 400 zip ties at the hardware store, and I'd
really like to use them all before I kick the bucket. I don't usually put
anything that heavy in the baskets, but sometimes I do (camp fire logs, for
instance). One time I was getting on my bicycle, and I noticed one of the
zip ties attaching my basket to its rack had broken, so I reached into my
saddle bag and pulled out a new one and secured it where the old one had
been. That was roughly a year and a half ago, if memory serves. I always
carry a few extra zip ties in my saddle bags because they weigh nothing and
they've proven super useful over the years for fixing random roadside
mishaps and getting me or a friend home without having to call for
motorized help. And again, I've still got more than 300 zip ties to put to
use. The clock is ticking!

[RBW] Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-08-22 Thread Nick Ybarra
Tough to say. I'm urban. Been carless for 14 years. I do recreational road
rides or camping rides most weekends, but my commute is only 3 miles each way.
Probably averages out to 15-20 miles a day since I ride a lot on the weekends.

I've thought about getting a car in the past year or so, mostly because my city
is getting more and more crowded, and I'd like to start maybe driving out of
town to start my road rides to avoid some of the stress of getting out of the
urban center.

By yeah, I currently own 3 working bikes. A Sam for commuting and camping and
doing whatever. An old specialized expedition if I want to go multi-day or the
Sam is out of commission. And an older Merckx road bike for going fast on the
weekends. Currently looking for a hard tail mountain bike (dreaming of a hunq)
since I just moved really close to an excellent trail system.

[RBW] Re: Shimano Bar End Shifter Install Question

2015-04-24 Thread Nick Ybarra
I ran Shimano bar-ends for a while before switching to Silvers. The little
bumps/ridges you describe are to be expected and nothing to worry about, in
my experience. That's just how those shifters feel.

On Friday, April 24, 2015 at 8:41:56 AM UTC-5, RDS wrote:

First time installing these bar end shifters. Novice bike mechanic at my

hitting small bumps or ridges as I move it up and down. Is this normal?

It has full range of motion and seems to shift up and down as needed. I
guess that I was expecting it to be smooth for a lack of a better way to
say it. Not complaining, I just don't have much experience to compare it
 to.

I installed it per the Shimano instructions. The parts seem to fit
together as intended. I don't think that I have the screw in too tight.
 Any input appreciated.

@Bill - Haha. I'm planning on holding on to the Miyata and would probably
only sell it if I acquired an upgrade like an Atlantis or Hunq. Hey, I can
dream...As far as Black Mountain, I'm definitely considering it, but I kind
of have my heart set on a threaded fork.

@Joe - Here are Bill's original build pics:

I've since made some slight modifications, including shorter stem/wider
bars, bar-end shifters, larger freewheel, front rack/basket, and a
Carradice Nelson saddlebag.
