Re: [RBW] Tech question: Rene Herse pulley-style brake yoke -- what am I doing wrong?

2024-09-05 Thread Takashi
I've used Rene Herse yokes and Dia Compe cheap yokes.
It seems that with Rene Herse yoke, when there's some oil or grease on the
cable, the cable pops out more easily than with Dia Compes.
I've had same issue, so cleaned both yoke and cable with degreaser
carefully, and no problem since then.

Re: [RBW] Northern Hemisphere Summer Riding Photos 2023

2023-06-30 Thread Takashi
Thank you John.
But, you know, summer in Japan is more severe than in Canada, and "Rinse"
isn't easy here since rivers in Japan (https://flic.kr/p/2oz6bYx) are
basically more treacherous than those in Canada, so mileage will be smaller
in summer.
I'll post pictures when I go ride.

Scott, handlebar is Albastache, and the stem is Nitto Dirt Drop 10cm.
Riv recommends that Moustache bar raised high
(https://www.rivbike.com/pages/nitto-stem-comparison), so I raised my
Albastache high.
Climbing is equally as easy as with drop bars, and feels very natural when
descending curvy roads, maybe most natural among the bars I've used so far.
(I've used Noodle, Albatross, Bosco, and Bullmoose.)
First I had the bar ends pointed slightly downward, and I suffered hand
numbness. I tilted it so the bar ends point very slightly UPward, and the
numbness is gone, though it seems counter intuitive.

Paul in Dallas, judging from trees and grasses in your photo, Texas seems
to be in spring already.

Josia, that looks like a tough ride! Your Gus must be a perfect bike for
such conditions. Good luck finding your ideal setup.

Richard, another Gus photo on snow! It should be a fun bike to ride in any
season.

John, that's a beautiful place. It's surprising that there is so little
snow even in Canada.

David, I understand that you are looking forward to spring, but your bike
looks "at home" on snow, in the second photo.

Kai, looks like a chilly ride. Building Rosco with studded tires sounds
like a good idea.

Eric, that must have been a very nice ride despite headwinds. Both photos
are beautiful.

I don't think we'll have any more snow this season. Like Ted says, maybe
time to start a Spring Photo thread?

Paul, I know very little about "old" bikes, and I've never known about
Austro Daimler bikes. Yours looks like a very meticulous made beautiful
frame. Is it made of stainless?
Also, your friend's Homer looks very cool & clean.

Dave, love that mirror-like pond; it's as if you see sky both over your
head and underneath you.

Luke, that looks like an "easier" ride compared to photos in your previous
posts. SF area seems to be a great place with various terrains.

Stephanie, Grant would no doubt approve your use of the bike. Those blue
Sackvilles make mere grocery rides joyous, don't they?

Russel, I agree with Rich that your bike looks great. Now I'm thinking
about which of my bike I should use green bartapes and yellow cables...

Eric, so there are two airfields nearby? I seldom have chance to look at
airplanes up close, that must be fun.

It’s winter here in Michigan and business at the local bike shop is slow.
The shop had a brilliant idea to host a class for a small number of
students to teach basic bicycle maintenance/mechanics. Students were to
bring their own bikes, which was wonderful because we would learn to work
on what we actually have. Our teacher was quietly brilliant, extremely
patient, and, well, dreamy. (I would love to set him up with my friend from
my women’s club ride and then be in their wedding. Unable to ascertain his
marital status without committing harassment, I am still in the throes of
scheming.)

I digress!

He taught us how the shop gives each bike a once-over. It’s an M shape,
starting at the front wheel, going up to the bars, down to the pedal/chain
ring, up to the saddle and down to that rear wheel. From there we moved on
to wheel truing, derailleurs and shifters, and finally, brakes.

There were three of us in the class; one aluminum Trek with flat bars, a
steel Jamis that had been ridden hard on the trainer in covid, and my
raspberry Platypus. We all had V brakes. They had indexed shifting and I
had friction. When examining our bikes, we/he found several problems
(though not on the Platypus because I drag that bike in for every little
thing) that we then observed our teacher fix. I now know what a loose
headset sounds like (the Trek). Though, ironically, if you hit my front
wheel to elicit the sound, the German mirror will respond with an identical
sound. There are some skills that I still see best left to the experts -
wheel truing, for instance. I audibly gasped when he took after the spokes
of a wheel to mess them up for demonstration. I am leaving my new spoke
wrench in the packaging because no good can come from that thing.

I am still not brave enough to do a lot with tools to my bike, but I’m
working on it. I like that some of the mystery was taken out of it all and
I can see how parts work. Do I dare disclose here some of what I thought
beforehand? Oh, fine. I thought a wheel out of true meant they had to bend
a rim back into place. I had NO idea spokes were the culprit, nor did I
know you could adjust them. 😬 And so on and so forth.

Our mechanic was so encouraging and told us we should experiment at home -
don’t worry, he assured us, you won’t break anything. But I wonder if he
will feel the same when I show up with my collection of redundant
Rivendells; pieces and parts left over and collected after rolling around
on my garage floor. “I have been fixing my bike and now it won’t work.”

Anyway, it’s a small step of self-betterment and I’ll keep walking that
direction. I’m sure some of you out there can relate.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-02-08 Thread Takashi
Ted,
The place I took the photo is about 5-minute ride from my room.
Snow is mostly disappeared now.
Snow bank indeed makes road narrower, but I ride mostly on non-busy back
roads, so no problem.

Slin, I'm pretty sure that your wife will love that beautiful Platypus!

Eric Marth,
Good ride with friends AND seeing an owl very close. What's not to like??
And photos in your latter post are also beautiful. It doesn't look like
winter except for the 3rd photos with ice in it.

Eric Norris,
I second Paul's comment that your photos make me feel like I'm there. It's
always very interesting to see historical buildings during a ride.

Paul, thanks for photo of Eric's Hillborne. That's indeed a gigantic bag!

Stephen, film photos have different atmosphere from digital ones, and yours
are so great!
I also live in a tiny apartment room with 2 bikes in it. I'm interested in
A Homer Hilsen but no more room.

Ryan, riding in strong wind (headwind or tailwind) must have been very cold.
But looking at that blue sky, I also would have hopped on my bike.

Richard, that bike looks like a perfect choice for having fun on snow!

Dave, great photos as always! Monochrome image highlights interesting
patterns of tree shadows.

Will, although there are no snow in the photo, it surely looks like a very
cold day!

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-08 Thread Takashi
Leah,
Thank you for the video, your Platypus with lots of lights is so fabulous!
It sure looks like Michigan is a tough place to ride bikes when there is
heavy snowfall.
As someone commented cross country skiing might be fun.
Here's a photo from last year:
https://flic.kr/p/2mZYVer

Paul,
Thank you. It's natural that higher, mountainous places get more snowfall.
West Virginia has more mountains? Now I understand why John Denver sang
"West Virginia, Mountain Mama..."

Dave,
I agree with Eric, your photos are great!
" Sorry for the number of photo"
No, not at all. The more photos the better.
I scrolled through your Instagram posts, they're all beautiful!

John,
The monochrome-ish photo is a genuine "Winter Photo."
Maybe it's the high latitude that makes daytime shorter than in most places?

Eric,
It's same in Japan that places where there is little snowfall don't have
infrastructure to handle snow.
Two inches of snow turns Tokyo into a chaos.

So many great images!

Brian,
Spectacular view, and oh, those clouds pattern in the sky!
And your Sam is so cool; to my eyes it's perfect.

Paul,
Thank you, I'm glad to know that you enjoy my photos.
Looks like Virginia is a very beautiful place, I can almost feel crisp air
and sweet smell of dry trees.

Leah,
Wow, blizzard to green in one week?
It gave you a chance to ride your beautiful Platypus, so it was a good
thing, I believe.
Please post more photos!

Eric,
Was it dawn or evening? Either case, beautiful photo, as always. Looks like
you had a very nice New Year's Day!
Paul's and Eric's photos make me wonder - doesn't Virginia have much
snowfall?

I've never swum in the river (I'm not a good swimmer), but I guess the
water is very cold, even in summer.

Hatouchi Route is a very beautiful route, but the most beautiful river

[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-13 Thread Takashi
Hi John

Here's the Hunqapillar page I found on Wayback Machine. I hope the link
works.
Hunqapillar page on Riv website
<https://web.archive.org/web/20111031165706/http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-hunqapillar.htm>

I don't know how Wayback Machine works; frames should have been grey/red at
the time this page was archived, but pictures shown here are the new green
ones.
Anyway, the 7th paragraph says "Every bar in the world is suitable for the
Hunqapillar, so put on what you like."
And if you scroll down (a bit above geo chart), they say:
"Which handlebar?
This is the hardest decision you'll make, because every option makes sense."

I remembered these words well because I read this page over and over when I
was contemplating which model I should buy.

[RBW] Re: Center pull/Herse Brake Help

2020-05-30 Thread Takashi
Hi Alex

I don't have bikes with centerpulls, but I had squealing issues with my RH
cantilever brakes.
Long story short, I swapped from salmon pads to black pads (using same
holders), and after several times of riding, they ceased to squeal.
I've read (in comment section of RH blog, I think) that another user also
switched from salmon to black and squealing problem was solved.
Also it seems that there is compatibility issue between rims and pads, so
if you have another rear wheel, you might try putting it on your Homer and
see how it goes.

Out of curiosity, did you have brake mounts brazed on your Homer?

[RBW] Riding and then mountaineering

2019-10-21 Thread Takashi
Last week I climbed Mt. Kosumo, one of Japanese Alps Mountains.
The starting point of trail up Mt. Kosumo is about 12 kilometers (8 miles)
away from where I live, so I decided to go by bike (Hunqapillar).
Though it was only 8 miles, I had to climb 750m (2460 ft), and it took 2
hours.

Once I reached the starting point of the trail, I locked my bike and
started climbing, enjoying views of half-green and half-orange mountains.
Four and a half hours later I was at the summit of Mt. Kosumo (elev.
2613m/8573ft).
It was a sunny day, and view from the summit was great!

There is a staffed mountain hut below the summit, so I went back the trail
and spent a night there.
When I was eating supper with other mountaineers, one of them said "Look,
the mountains are glowing in evening light!"
We all went out and gazed at mountains, our mouths open.

Next morning it was misty with hardly any view, and occasionally raining,
so I climbed down early and went back home.
As I said it took 2 hours from my house to trail, but ride back home took
only 45 minutes. It was quite a descent.

Apart from that, it works fairly well.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar fender options

2019-01-05 Thread Takashi
I put Woody's Fenders on my Hunqapillar.
https://www.woodysfenders.com/default.asp
I think you can contact Cody of Woody's Fenders and ask him to make wider
fenders than listed on website.

Pictures of my Hunqa with 2.25-inch tires and fenders:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/sets/72157650693988781/
The 3rd picture shows rear fender installation. The fenders is cut into
two, and the metal hardware which connects two pieces go OVER the seatstay
bridge instead of under.
I remember that there was Rivendell Blug years ago showing they did similar
work with plastic front fender, i.e., chopping front fender into two.

I assume that, with right tools, you can do the same thing on metal or
plastic fenders.
(Whether you like the appearance or not is another question.)

[RBW] Re: Quick removal of full-coverage fenders

2018-10-17 Thread Takashi
Thank you Erl.

Front fender is attached with ordinary bolts.
I did this to the rear fender for rinko-ability. (Bringing my bike into
train)
I need to remove rear fender, but not front fender.
https://flic.kr/p/gJAK24
When I pack my bike, I remove whole front fork from the frame. Front fender
and rack stays on the fork.
Technically you can bring your bike into train by simply removing both
wheels from your bike, but I have front fender and front rack, so removing
whole fork is easier for me.

2018-08-08 Thread Takashi
Manny, it was a great pleasure meeting Ashley and you.
It definitely was worth taking time to go to Tokyo.

Looking at your pictures... hmm... I never knew such places existed in
Japan!
What I see here in Nagano are mountains and rivers and trees.
I'll have to visit Mori Museum!
Hope you also enjoy your visit to Kyoto.

I'd love to visit California and meet you and Riv people there some day.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose Bars - Your Experiences?

2018-07-31 Thread Takashi
Hi Joe,

Actually Bullmoose bars offer two positions, grip area for upright
position, and grabbing near center triangle offers fairly forward-leaning
position.
I've added a pair of Dia-Compe knob grips (DC 138) near the triangle to
have even more aggressive position.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/35426227050/

The longest ride I've done with Bullmoose was about 60km (38 miles), mostly
on pavement, and I had no hand problems.
I was kind of surprised that it was so comfortable (I was expecting it to
be a torture).
Here is my guess as to why it was so comfortable:

Jan Heine wrote "there are only a few nerve endings in the base of your
thumb, making this area ideal for resting on the handlebars" in his blog.
https://janheine.wordpress.com/2010/12/11/avoiding-numb-hands/
With Bullmoose's upslope, combined with long top tube of Riv bikes, my
hands tend to slip toward center of handlebars (toward the stem).
My hands are stopped at the brake levers, and most the weight on my hands
are supported at the base of my thumbs.
I believe that's why I had no hand numbness during the ride.

[RBW] Re: In Japan! Any recommendations?

2018-07-26 Thread Takashi
Hi Manny,

Last time I visited Kyoto I saw many cafe shops that seemed like they
opened recently, so you will have many options.
I had limited time in Kyoto so I can't say about where you should see, but
any temples and shrines, even non-famous ones, should be worth a visit.

If you have extra time in Tokyo, you might enjoy taking Yamanote Line
train, get off at random station, and taking a walk around the station.
It's interesting to see sceneries and atmospheres vary from one station to
another, though they are located pretty close to each other (less than a
mile).

If you're coming in summer, be prepared for humidity.
Temperature is generally lower than in California, but humidity easily hits
80%.
When are you coming?
Tokyo and Kyoto are both far away from where I live (Nagano), but it will
be great if my work schedule allows to meet you.

Mont Bell sells wool knickers. 79% wool, to be exact.
Though it says "Trekking Knickers," looks like it targets cyclists, with
reinforced seat area.
They don't fit your requirement in that:

   - They have built-in waist belt, so they don't have belt loops.
   - They have straps at knee, not elastic

If you're OK with above, I think they're great.

Both custom frames still belong to a same owner (a BL customer), so they do
not belong to Blue Lug.
But BL staff told me that the frames, before coming to Blue Lug, have been
hanging in the owner's house for many years, not ridden.
So if I urge BL people to contact the owner and then BL urges the owner to
sell the frames... maybe ???

[RBW] Re: Casual Observations on Japanese Metropolitan Area Bike Transportation

2017-11-22 Thread Takashi
Nice write up, Bob.

I lived in urban Chiba about 10 years ago, and I sometimes met entitled
cyclists. I often quarreled with them since I refused to yield to such rude
cyclists.
I now live in rural area of Nagano where I meet very few cyclists, but when
I visit Tokyo, it seems that cyclists are politer these days than before.

In case you missed, there was a good article in Jan Heine's blog:

And, if you want to get a Riv step-through, you should definitely do so.

[RBW] Re: Enjoying autumn colors

2017-11-11 Thread Takashi
Deacon,
Autumn in Colorado also looks amazing. And your snow ride photos are
wonderful.
It looks like winter comes about a month earlier in your area than where I
live.
Snow starts to fall in about a week here, so I'll have to think about
preparing my bike for winter.

Richard,
Thank you.
The decaleur has lots of bolts & nuts so it's unelegant, but it turned out
that handling feel is better when the bag is sitting on the rack.
(My bike tends to wander when I attach the bag to handlebar.)

Anton,
I googled Catskill Mountains, and it sure looks like a beautiful place.
It must be very lovely in autumn!

Ryan,
I'm looking forward!

Ian,
I have visited the area several times, so I have pretty good idea as to
which route is quiet and which route is not.
I had to ride on busy road in some places, and I didn't feel like taking
pictures in such places, so there are pictures of quiet places only.
Shin Torii Pass route was less quiet than I expected. I think I met about
20 cars and 10 cyclists in two hours.
Matsuzaka Pass route was very quiet as before; I met only one car in two
hours.
I did not worry about cars because they go at slow speed. Roads are narrow,
and there are lot of tight curves like this
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/37452694374/>, so if they go
too fast they are likely to jump into a river before hitting any cyclist.

Paul,
My pleasure!

Patrick and Ann,

I was smiling when riding under the trees, and when I came home and looked

Patrick, I don't remember about trees in the US very well, but yes, we have
yellow, orange, and red leaves here.
But a friend of mine in Hiroshima (warmer place in Japan) said that it's
less colorful there in autumn, so it depends.

BTW, sky and cloud in your picture looks brilliant!
If you want brilliant colors of leaves, going near the trees and looking up

[RBW] Re: Bike destinations in Japan and Amsterdam

2017-04-06 Thread Takashi
Hi John

I am pretty sure that there are rental cycle services in large cities like
Tokyo and Kyoto, but I have no experience with them.
One shop I know of is Ehicle near Shinjuku, Tokyo.
They have Bike Friday's Pocket Companion for rent.
http://blog.livedoor.jp/ehicle/archives/50451863.html

If you prefer to ride in rural areas, you can rent bikes at Shimanami
(http://www.go-shimanami.jp/global/english/bicycle/) or Hida
(http://satoyama-experience.com/activity/cycling/tour/standard/), to give
two examples.
They are both far from Tokyo and Kyoto, though.

In any case, you must be careful to avoid heat stroke, since it will be
(relatively) hot and (very) humid in summer.

[RBW] Re: Awesome new bars on Blue Lug Blog.

2017-02-09 Thread Takashi
Hi Richard,

The first link you posted is about an old bar.
The blog post says that Tanifun (the author of the blog) bought it years
ago, and that he can't figure out the name (or number) of the bar.

You can buy goods directly from Blue Lug.
https://global.bluelug.com/
If you want to know shipping cost, "Delivery Policies" link at the left of
the Blue Lug site leads you to wrong page.
Instead, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click "Delivery Policy"
link.

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO: Planet Bike strut-compatible QRs

2017-01-21 Thread Takashi
Viva in Japan makes QR-mounted eyelet, similar to Velo Orange but smaller.
Front : http://www.cb-asahi.co.jp/item/03/00/item3260153.html
Rear : http://www.cb-asahi.co.jp/item/07/00/item3090157.html

I have pairs for both front and rear that I don't use, so I can send them
to you if you want.

[RBW] Re: Snow powder and pack tires

2016-12-20 Thread Takashi
I bought a pair of Continental Race King
<https://www.bike24.de/1.php?content=8;product=67389;menu=1000,2,103,212>.
There are many versions (cheap ones and expensive ones); the pair I bought
was expensive ones which says "Black Chili Compound."
Rode it only short distances, but it feels grippy yet fast enough. Felt a
bit buzzy on paved road, but I felt it was acceptable.
I haven't tried it on slippery road. Maybe I will test it when there's snow.
If you want more knobby ones, there are "X-King" and "Mountain King", which
I haven't tried.

It seems that Conti's "2.0 inch" tires are a bit wider than Schwalbe's "2.0
inch" tires.

[RBW] Re: High Riding Handlebar Bag

That's a clever mounting system Jon.

I have made mounting hardware that attaches to headset.

(See comments about mounting hardware)

As I wrote in comments to the photo, bolts tend to loosen.
I am thinking about using Surly's hardware to attach bag to the front rack.

Re: [RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-01 Thread Takashi
Leah, I've been enjoying reading your great story. Thanks for sharing!

About Backabike Bags:
I think there are loops on your bags through which you can run straps.
You can secure the bottom of your bags to the rack with John's Irish Straps
which Riv sells.
(ANY strap will work for that matter, but Irish Straps are best-looking,
right?)
Attached picture is of my Hunqapillar with Hub Area Bags on front, smaller
version of Backabike Bags, secured with Irish Straps.

Good luck.
I'm looking forward to reading more of your stories.
