[RBW] Re: The Cub House's Los Angeles Invitational Ride - May 18

2024-05-18 Thread Tony Lockhart
@Neale & Armand:How did it go today? How are those legs feeling? Was
hoping to be Riv's unofficial Paparazzi at rollout this morning, but ended
up doing some beach camping instead. When I got back into town this
afternoon, I drove by the Cub House and saw cyclists everywhere with
Pizzanista boxes. Guessing you guys had a blast.

I'm gonna swing by tomorrow for the swap meet and car show. Hoping to score
a derailer and a patina'd bell...maybe talk to someone who can give me tips
on rack building and brazing. Will post up a few bike culture pics to
encourage Ted to move to the west coast. ;)

Totally agree with you, Paul. I know I'm being picky, but the welds on my
Roadini look pretty sloppy. Best believe it's going up for sale just so
long as (1) the Lugged Leo has the same snappy ride quality and (2) it
comes in blue. Not sure what compelled me to sell my Soma SanMarcos ten

Wouldn't it be great if it had the Red/White color scheme like the early

[RBW] Re: Rivendell (Roadini) Geometry

2024-04-28 Thread Tony Lockhart
Hi Jay,
Sorry to hear that things aren't working at the moment. Have you thought
about getting a professional bike fit? Or perhaps making various
adjustments and documenting them over and extended period time?

FWIW, I'm also on a 57cm Roadini with 170mm S!lver Cranks, Nitto 65 seat
post, and Brooks Professional saddle (86pbh, 5'9", longer legs shorter
torso). When I called Riv last winter, Grant mentioned that I'd be happy on
a 54 or 57 Leo depending on how much exposed seat post I'd be willing to
live with. In practice, I find that I need to push the saddle all the way
back in order to get comfy. I'm surprised to hear that you're pushing it
forward, but I'm guessing not all Brooks' are made the same. Like Brent,
I've also got a Hillborne (mine is a 56cm frame from 2009; same saddle,
crank, seat post as my Leo) and I'm super comfy on it. Keep in mind that
I've figured out what works for me during the past 14 years of ownership of
the Sam, and the Leo is very similar in size and riding characteristics.

I hope you get things dialed in.
Tony

Haha, second reel was awesome. You just got another follower on IG! 

Back on topic..those packing cubes are great. I like to use them for
multi-country travel trips because they organize contents well. I hadn’t

+1I think a Sam with a 3x9 drivetrain and 44mm tires will be perfect
for your needs. Great with or without racks, amazing with drops or upright
bars, and it looks great. Easy to basket and fender.

Very slick frame. When do you plan to build it up?

[RBW] Re: Dialing in a Brooks Saddle

2024-01-30 Thread Tony Lockhart
Hi Jay,
Best words of wisdom I can provide is to get tons of saddle time and adjust
every 3-5 miles...it'll be dialed in before you know it. Also, keep your
Brooks waxed, don't let it get soaked, only a quarter turn to tighten them
up (loosen a smidge before you tighten). Yeah, that's all I've got.

My Leo has a B17 Pro in black, and my Sam has the same but in honey. Was
just thinking I'd swap since dark gold and tan sidewalls look great with
brown saddles. Either option is a win/win because those saddles are great.
Happy trails,
Tony

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-22 Thread Tony Lockhart
@Patrick - Leo is a bit more nimble and rigid to a comparably spec'd Sam.
Sam seems a bit more flexy, especially with out of the seat climbing. Seems
like the Sam is all over the place when it comes to steering--my Leo seems
to track way better at low speeds. For context, I've had a million setups
on my Sam during the last 14 years and it's currently running a flat bar,
2x8 setup, on 44mm RH tires. My Leo is running a drop bar, 3x8 setup, and
32mm Pasela TGs.38mm Shikoros arriving this Wednesday. Sam used to have
the same parts currently on the Leo. I think the differences are very
slightboth bikes are amazing.

@Jay - Congrats on the purchase--you picked a winner. Like you, I also
purchased a dark gold 57cm frame. I couldn't be happier. Leo is a champ.

First post here! I've been reading some of the threads and this sounds
like a good place...my new happy place ;-)

I ordered the dark gold Roadini (57) from the only shop in Canada that
sells Riv (C Cycles) and will be picking it up in a few weeks when I'll
 be visiting Montreal.

Looking for this to be a project bike, that evolves over time. For now
though, I had a lot of new / lightly used parts on hand, so I'll be using
those and having the bike shop supply the rest (including some handbill
wheels for some lightly used 43mm GKSS tires I'm using on my Fargo in the
winter). Build will be Shimano 11sp, with DT shifters and Tektro RRL
 brake
 levers, and Tektro brakes.

Purpose of the bike is all-road (where I live, a lot of that is paved,
but there are gravel roads further out), but will not be used much on
 local
mixed-surface trails (where the Fargo excels). My current road bike will
be jealous, but I'm not kicking her to the curb just yet!

 Photos to come in February.

Solid bike, Brent! So glad to see how nicely it turned out, especially with
that gorgeous silver drivetrain.

I've got about 300ish miles on my Roadini now and I couldn't be happier.
Oddly enough, I have been spending more time on my Hillborne because I
don't want to feel guilty by leaving it in the garage. Can't wait to hear
your impression by the end of the summer.almost wondering if you'll
prefer the Leo to the Sam.

Happy trails,
Tony

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Riv Ride

2024-01-07 Thread Tony Lockhart
Just wondering what the fitness, technical ability, and comfort level of
people are. While I've never taken my bike on single track, I love to try
out some flowy curves and fire roadsand I'm quite happy to do 30+ miles
on mixed terrain, especially if we get an early start. I'm super flexible.

How are others feeling? I'd rather defer to the group, in favor of getting
more people to attend. The more, the merrier, IMO.

@Armand - Glad to hear that you'll be visiting Allez. Perhaps you can let
us know if any good ideas or routes come up when you chat with Kyle. I
think it would be great if we kept the ride on this side of town. I can't
speak for others, but I'd welcome a future ride on the west side.

@Phil - Great idea for a route; you've got my vote! I know Ted had
mentioned Cherry Canyon. Sign me up for flowy single track and a beer
anyday!

Re: [RBW] Los Angeles Riv Ride

2024-01-06 Thread Tony Lockhart
Looks like we’re going to have a great turnout. Anybody good at mapping out
routes?

There’s an event at The Rose Bowl on the 17th, but I’m sure there’ll be
parking near the Aquatic Center (for folks driving in). The Zoo/Autry lot
will have plenty of parking as well. Both locations are right off the
freeway.

[RBW] Re: Roadini Feedback

2024-01-04 Thread Tony Lockhart
Hi Chris,
Thanks for sharing your story. I’m sorry to hear about your dad’s passing
however I’m happy to hear that his bike is being put to good use.

To answer your question, I’ll verify that the Leo is fast(ish), as you put
it. I just bought one and have about 150 miles on it.

Having run a hundred different setups on my Sam during the past 14 years,
I’ll just add that you can set up your Homer to be fast(ish). But if you’re
itching for a new bike, the Roadini is great. Definitely less flex in the
rear triangle with out of the saddle climbs. If you’ve got a type A
personality, you’ll think the welds in the Leo look sloppy. Nothing beats a
gorgeous, lugged frame….but if you care about something reliable and fun,
definitely not sluggish, and beautifully quirky, the Roadini is the way to
go.

Happy trails, Tony

Hey folks,
Anybody free for an early February meet up and ride? Ted D. is in town
during the week of the 12th, so this seems like a great opportunity for a
fun, super causal ride.

Sunday the 11th
Monday the 12th (state holiday)
Saturday the 17th

What do you think?

[RBW] Re: ROADINI in South Pasadena

2024-01-01 Thread Tony Lockhart
Apologies if flashing GIF is annoying; you can tell that both bikes are
VERY similar in size. The Leo rides just as predictably as the Sam, with
minimal differences. Out of the saddle climbs are more efficient on the
Leo, and it's not as squirrely with steering as the Sam on slow rolls. The
Leo tracks a lot better. I will say that the Leo was immediately familiar
with all of the best riding characteristics just like the Sam. Very curious
to see how the Leo handles on 40mm tires.

[RBW] Re: ROADINI in South Pasadena

2023-12-26 Thread Tony Lockhart
Last post for the intro...promise!

SAM BUILD
After purchasing parts last week, I set this bike up as a 2x8 flat bar
build with Swift Industries bags and a Wald basket. This is will be for
biking with family, getting in fitness rides, doing grocery shopping,
coffee outside vibes, and running errands around town. Heckmaybe even
some fenders and a kickstand.

LEO BUILD
This will be a 3x8 drop bar build set up for 40-60ish mile road rides on
the weekend. It'll use an old set of OpenPro/Ultegra with some Panaracers
Pasellas. In terms of luggage, it'll get a Swift Industries Kestral mounted
to a Velo Orange decalleur and a tool roll under the saddle. Might be cool
as a Rando bike but free time in the saddle is limited at this point in my
life.

Please stay tuned if you have any interest in seeing a comfy road build
take shape. I'll definitely share insights during and after the build,
especially as I get acclimated to the new bike. Cheers and Happy New Year!

Tony

Thanks all!

Just as I suspected, the Shimanos won’t work. BTW, forgot to mention that
my bike uses 700c wheels.

Definitely too stubborn to remove my beloved Nitto rack, but curious enough
to try the Tektros. Will post results when I get them in and attempt and
install.

Many thanks for the responses and pics. Cheers,

[RBW] Re: lock ring too tight

2023-04-30 Thread Tony Lockhart
Hi Adam,

Sorry to hear about the complications. I’m curious to see close-up pictures
of the damage.

Depending on how much risk you’re comfortable with I think you could take
progressively longer rides to make sure everything is OK. In this situation
I would remove the parts, inspect, reinstall, and torque to the proper
spec…. Followed by a number of rides that increasing distance. This might
be a good teachable moment for you, and I don’t think being cautious could
hurt you.

Good luck!
Tony

2023-04-26 Thread Tony Lockhart
@isaac -- The Cub House events are right around the corner from
meexcellent bike shop. And their community events are a blast.
Definitely a great opportunity for a Pasadena ride especially since there
are a ton of good coffee shops in the area.

@bryce -- Yep, that was orange Sam at Palomares Adobe. What a great
location. My daughter and I were attending the 626 event and happened upon
the grounds. Will definitely go back there with the rest of the family in
the future. BTW, your Atlantis looks dialed in. Really love the handlebar
setup, and will probably go that route once the Roaduno frames come out.

Count me in.

I'm in South Pasadena (orange Hillborne bought in 2009). Haven't browsed

[RBW] Re: Experiences with Atlantis

2020-01-15 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've ridden thousands of miles of Midwest gravel on my Toyo Atlantis; 200
of them were racing the Dirty Kanza. I switched to a Salsa Fargo for
serious gravel riding because of comfort, disc brakes, and tire clearance.
I can barely squeeze 700x50 on the rear of the Atlantis and the brakes and
kickstand bracket collect a lot of mud when things get nasty. If I were to
choose a Riv for all road/gravel, it would be the Appaloosa.

[RBW] Re: Velocity Quill experiences?

2020-01-09 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have Velocity Quill on my Toyo Atlantis with 700x50 Soma Cazadero tires;
the rims are awesome, but the tire/frame clearance it tight. I chose the
Quill over the A23 because they were tubeless compatible and their wider
inside width. Our Salsa Powderkeg tandem has a Cliffhanger with dynamo on
the front, and I will replace the Stan's rim on the back with a Cliffhanger
as soon as I decide which hub I want to use. I'm leaning towards Hadley.

I'm not a weight weenie, but I can't imagine a better place to increase
bicycle performance (besides the human motor) than wheels/tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-03 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Pure fantasy but my ideal'Riv 25th Anniversary' design would be... Open up the
full historical design catalog so long as lugs still exist to support, pre
order with full deposit only. Any design that gets 5 or more orders (whatever
threshold is driven by River and their builder to ensure a profit) makes the
cut.

Have Grant and the team develop a special head badge and Rivendell decal set,
number then, Grant hand sign them... And somehow have a secondary decal that
notes the particular model heritage. Maybe make the colors limited and a
special pallet... Maybe a single color!?!

No geometry changes, only the stock sides available originally. No protovelos,
no customs, but any stock design advertised in a catalog or reader. Maybe
include Bridgestone 1994 catalog? :)

Everyone would theoretically be able to get what they wanted (so long as they
bring 4 friends along to their way of thinking). And if Riv kept the deposit
list live and public we'd have the ultimate all time popularity contest for Riv
bike designs.

New, new stock, special edition Riv All Rounder, 1 of 5, and it says Rivendell
on it, that fits... :)

Re: [RBW] Re: clean-ish routing for generator lights

2019-01-27 Thread Tony DeFilippo
After checking in with Grant on my Saluki I drilled a hole in the downtube to
head tube lug window which I then chamfered. The exit hole is about an inch up
the seat tube also chamfered. Drilling the frame isn't for the faint of heart
but it worked for me and does clean up the wiring. My correspondence from
Grant was that both locations were structurally safe to drill a wire sized
hole.

Re: [RBW] Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”

2019-01-11 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I haven't bike packed, but I've ridden 2.1, 2.3 and 3" tires on singletrack,
paved, and towpath... If the terrain is anything other than paved my preference
is wider the better. If climbing on non paved routes the wider, knobby tires
become magic Velcro and add a nice stability margin for the slow grinding...

Obviously you can do without and are doing it with style already. But unless
you have trouble dialing in you're tire pressure on the larger volume plus
tires I don't see a downside. I'm not terribly sensitive to being off a bit on
the pressure so no down side for me.

If love to see you riding a Boots, or if you can forgive the unpleasant
conversation and find a 135mm rear spacing Jones I really agree with Eric that
you'd be thrilled with the riding experience.

[RBW] Re: Just your average Clem Smith.... not!

2019-01-11 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I saw a ton of these hydro linear pull brakes in Germany last year on a visit
and some to a bike shop about them. Definitely commonplace and there didn't
seem to be any concerns about failure at least in a touring it commuting setup.
The same shop was also fairly dismissive about the need for disc brakes on a
city or touring bike when I asked. In their mind the discs are specialist
equipment for muddy/wet conditions off road.

My personal experience with hydro disc brakes on my Jones has been flawless and
I chose hydros again for my new unicrown Jones the bleed procedure does require
extra equipment though it's not as complex as you might think.

[RBW] New Mary Poppins bike content

Took my daughter, wife and Mom to the movie today, overall very well done. My 2
1/2 year old actually made it through the whole thing, awake, and no one had
their experience ruined!

Anyway, bike content galore... The lamp lighters ride a city/dutch/cargo bike
with a stowed ladder for servicing the lamps. The main lamp lighter Jack's
bike features prominently but there's even a grand mass bike ride romp through
the London streets with some tricks at the end and it looked great. Should
prompt some kiddo's having fun on bikes in the coming year for sure.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays.

Obenauf's was developed by a wildland firefighter that walked through wet

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-02 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Great thread, great responses!

Mileage wise I didn't really have a hard goal but I am thrilled that I'm
already 500 miles over my total from last year which speaks to alot of good
times on the bike. The main thing has been continuing the trend I started
last fall of extending my morning commutes in particular, even if it's only
an extra mile or so... it keeps the ride fresh, adds some miles and keeps
me in touch with so much more of the city. Getting up earlier has also
offered occasional opportunities for pre-work coffee meetups which has been
awesome.

Family-bike goals were just to get my daughter (now 2 1/2) to enjoy being
on the bike and to get out as a family as much as possible. Both of those
goals were definitely a success. My daughter loves the bike, both her Yepp
front seat and burley trailer. She'll definitely move on to a balance bike
next year which I'm excited about. I'm overdue a post on my HHH but
sufficient for here to say I love the bike and have been thrilled with the
purchase.

Patrick and others - thanks for the very thorough answer to my question
about pedal retention. I tend to ride with the middle of my foot on the
pedal so no clips or straps have ever worked well for me... And I haven't
missed them. I do like the heavily spiked VP platforms on all my bikes
though. I'm glad to hear that it may not be required for safe fixed riding.

I'm going to throw a set of VP's and a new chain on my ANT and try fixed
this week... I'm looking forward to it, thanks again for the info and
inspiration!

I remember Grant writing that cassettes cranked down to 30 N-m is how bikes
leave Rivendell. I have used that for 9+ years with no safety problem and
an easy enough time getting the lockring loose that I routinely take the
cassette off as part of a chain clean.

that my 5'5" wife is no longer comfortable being able to negotiate the toddler

My daughter loves it, each seat has a weight limit/recommendation. Front
seating can move past the strapped in seat with a cycle truck/Euro style small
saddle mounted up on the TT once they are old enough to sit on a saddle. I
plan to transition to that next summer most likely.

We also use a Burley trailer for rides she seems likely to fall asleep on.

The Velo Orange Grand Cru Touring Hub is still available in the 10-speed

I don't know the story of how the bike came to Velocity but it's a
respected shop in a pretty well to do area... They pass a couple gems
through every year.

The black frame is pretty forgiving, the photos don't show just how much
abuse the bike has seen, I do know it wasn't rideable when it came in,
getting a complete overhaul...

When I reached out Mike Flanagan couldn't identify the bike or the person
he built it for other than to say it was one of his very early and custom
efforts. Very friendly and cool guy by the way.

Re: [RBW] Surprise New Bike Day

2018-11-07 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I’m glad to see I wasn’t alone in my reaction to this frame!

Tom thats excellent info about the drum brake service, i need to get some
of that grease.

Anyone have a picture of the ‘D Rack’? I have exchanged emails with Mike
Flanigan about the bike actually, he confirmed it was an early one of his.
Seems like a very nice guy, I didn’t realize he was back in business but
I’m happy to hear it.

Anyone have an opinion about Sturmey Archer vs Shimano drum brake IGH’s?
Not sure I’ll go that route, might stick with single speed or look at the
two speed/dinglespeed setup.

Also i’ve been out of the 700x32ish tire market a while... these drum brake
wheels will definitely penalize flat repair times so I may have to look at
more robust tires than my compass and schwable slicks lately. Riv Jack
Browns, pasaelias, the VO/panaracer tires, gravel kings... any consensus on
favorites?

to my local Co-Op yesterday with ZERO thought towards looking at new to me
bikes... My bike thoughts lately have consisted of replacing my Saluki rear
wheel and scheming a way to sell my current Jones plus to fund a new Jones plus
with the unicrown fork... Anyway, I'm chatting with the mechanic/proprietor At
Velocity Co-Op and I notice a black upright bike with hammered fenders leaving
against a pile of other pedestrian looking bikes.

I go over to check it out, albatross bars, nitto stem, single speed rear wheel,
no brake, drum brake front wheel... My interest is now peaked - drum brakes? I
don't see them often. Then I see the headbadge. A N T. Almost simultaneously
the mechanic started talking about how no one appreciated the bike and it's
been in the shop for days, 'people don't get it'. I agree that 'people' are
blind or uneducated in not appreciating the neat joints, the custom stainless
rear rack and understated style of this frame. I tell him, I think I can get
this bike sold for you thinking that a picture and post here or iBOB would net
a prospective owner quickly. Then I make the fatal move, I ask for a test
ride, the frame is a 57cm, touch small compared to my other bikes but looks
very rideable.

The test ride took me straight back to my house (in the neighborhood) to grab
some cash and return to buy the bike in the spot. It rides great, steers from
the hip, no hands without shimmy (unloaded), feels 'tight' in a good way. So
that's how I've ended up in a N=6 (one loaned out, one off site and one tandem
included in that number, so N=3 to me) again despite some significant effort
yours downsizing and minimizing my bike stable.

The bike is perfectly rideable as is but that won't stop me from tuning it up.
Right now I'm thinking wider tires (current 28mm are obviously to narrow) and
some kind of front rack/basket. I may follow Deacon Patrick's lead and try
fixed while I have it easily available in the current flip flop rear wheel.
Lights for winter commuting, maybe even a new wheelset to get brakes back on
the rear wheel.

Anyone have a single speed/igh roadster they love that can contribute ideas for
winter projects on my new ANT?

[RBW] Re: Leo Roadini on Brevet--SFR Del Puerto Canyon 200k ride report

2018-11-06 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Bill, love your ride reports. Epic prose for an epic experience. I identify
with finding immense pleasure in carefully picking a bike, building it up for a
purpose (or many purposes) and then having it perform as well as you'd have
hoped... I think that the full circle of deciding-finding-customizing-using is
one of the real draws of BOBish/Rivish culture.

[RBW] Re: Tires for a new HHH build

2018-11-04 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Just came back from 15 miles on our G-mail clad HHH... Love the tires, also
running them on a Clementine and the 29er version on a Jones Plus. Strongly
recommended. On the HHH him running them tubed on cliffhangers though the
Clementine has tubeless in cliffhangers... Both work fine.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-03 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch
It was whatever Rivendell installed when they built it; probably a
Pletscher. It gets pretty windy here in Iowa, and I've learned to lay my
bikes on the ground instead of using kickstands or leaning them against
objects. Our Powderkeg sounds like scaffolding falling over when a big gust
of wind catches it.

I haven't had a chance to ride the San Marcos since paring it down to 24.5#
because our bike paths have been under water for the past month. I'm
picking up a custom Guitar Ted-built wheelset of Velocity Quills for my
Atlantis on Monday that should knock off considerable weight when I set it
up tubeless next Spring.

[RBW] FYI: Sunrace 8sp cassettes

2018-10-29 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I just found this on Amazon independently and was going to throw out a query...
Thrilled to see the community already 'knows' and that it is getting some use
by riv riders... I'd been wanting to go 8 speed on my Jones that had a nice 11
speed 42t max cassette right now and this is the ticket. I love 8 speed for
cheap cassette and chains, I'm running them on every bike other than the Jones
currently. Gone to think of it one of these will work well in my HHH as well!

Re: [RBW] Go Get A Clem, Folks! Clem H Initial Ride Report - 28 Oct 2018

2018-10-29 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I love nothing my wife's 52 Clementine, she loves the orange... So we're both
awfully pleased with it. Best part to me is 2.35" tires (big ones) with fender
clearance.

I do like the look of the more traditional diamond frames. What is the story
with the seat stays? I know initially they were curved to maintain the same ST
lug but looks like some are now straight. I prefer straight though I'm not
really in the market.

[RBW] Gold Trail

I love that we get to live vicariously through the rides if so many on this
list and your photography and words are always at the top of the heap. Seeing
the aspens turning in person is on my short list!

I also get amusement thinking of a modern hiker or backpacker donned head to
toe in synthetics and devices encountering you on the trail and wondering if
they had slipped through some odd wormhole or time warp! :)

Keep sharing please!

Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-09-27 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Golden ager for sure... My Saluki is exactly what a bike 'should' look and ride
like to me. Probably because that's what Just Ride told me! :)

I fully admire - and have financially supported with my only two new bike
purchases - the Clem/HHH functionality. Probably the two most useful bikes
I'll ever own.

If I could have Saluki tubing, geometry and equipment (fenders, racks, lights)
frame sporting the Clem/HHH 2.35" tires I might be completely done.

[RBW] cliffhanger rims and canti brakes

2018-09-23 Thread Tony DeFilippo
No issue on my wife's Clementine or our HHH. The Clem had Shimano canti's of
some sort and the HHH has Paul motolite. They are wide rooms so I suppose some
frames might have an issue if they have narrowly spaced studs but I don't think
that's the case on any of my bikes, I've mounted a cliffhanger rim in my
canti-saluki as well and it looked like it would be fine from a rim perspective.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-16 Thread Tony DeFilippo
My first reaction from the initial visual wasn't super positive... but it's
growing on me a bit. I don't love that top tube curve but I'm not sure
why. I do love Grant's Mongolian horseback analogy for trail riding, I've
never thought about it that way and will re-read a couple times and try to
incorporate it a bit myself. I also enjoy the newly created 'Hill Bike'
segment but it also highlights the difference in readily available riding
for Mt/Hill bikes close to me... for all the reasons Grant highlights
urban/suburban trails are mostly tailored to the capabilities or
aspirations of dual suspension bikes, at least the intermediate and
advanced ones. I'm 1-2 hours from the kind of trailhead for the wandering
exploratory rides he's talking about which makes it difficult these days.

Still I'm thrilled they made the bike, as much as I do like the hydro-disc
brakes on my Jones Plus I think I'd be fine w/ canti's and better able to
service them (though the hydro procedure isn't rocket science). I'll be
interested to see the final production version. I hope he goes w/ a cream
headtube... maybe that is what is bothering me in my initial blush more
than the curved top tube, or maybe its the tig weld transition of top tube,
down tube and head tube... something discountenanced there for me.

[RBW] Widest tire for a Saluki

2018-09-03 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I've seen pictures of Pudge's Saluki with SBH's no fenders though the
clearances were slim.

I've never had larger than a 42 on mine. Whenever I get off my tandem or my

Schwable Big one tires and fenders... Guess that's a different bike though! :)

[RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos size for 87.5cm PBH

2018-09-03 Thread 'Tony McG' via RBW Owners Bunch
My PBH is 89 cm, and I ride a 59 San Marcos with plenty of seatpost.
According to the geometry chart, there is only .1" between the two sizes.
The 59 has 2 top tubes where the 57 will only have 1, if that matters to
you. The 57 is designed for 650b, and 59 is 700c.

[RBW] Re: Chirping rear hub

2018-08-13 Thread Tony DeFilippo
The hub is an ultegra 6700... Thanks everyone for the things to go check!

So tonight I got the wheel in the truing stand and double checked each
spoke/nipple and lubed each one... Nothing stood out. Aside from checking that
the valve stem isn't rocking or loose how else do you eliminate it as a
contributor?

The babyshoe pass EL tires are mounted tubeless so I guess next step is to
strip down, reseat the valve and remount the tire.

Patrick where do you get your ball bearing replacements for wheel servicing?
How often are folks fully rebuilding a rear hub like this?

Thanks again for all the input!

[RBW] Chirping rear hub

2018-08-12 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Last stop before hub replacement... :)

So my Saluki developed a distinct rotational chirp about 2 weeks ago that
rapidly became all the time and getting louder. It happens all the time,
pedaling and coasting, when I'm on the bike, but doesn't present in the stand.

Before deciding it was the hub I took off the rear brake, bag, rack and triple
checked the fenders... I'm 99% it's the hub.

So with a new to me set of park cone wrenches (the double sided ones) I broke
down the axle, removed and degreased everything. No obvious signs of damage to
any bearings or the races. After everything was fully wiped down and re
greased I installed the same bearings and reassembled.

Same chirp iron initial ride. I swapped the cassette and played with the axle
tension... Same result.

I suppose I could replace the ball bearings but other than that I'm at a loss
and mentally pricing out a new sealed bearing wheelset sporting pacenti rims.

Before I go that day I wanted to poll group in case I've missed something
obvious.

Thanks!

I had to gag/smile at the difference between 5 and 15% humidity... Definitely
gloating! ;)

So long as your moving I find most heat and humidity to be bearable... So long
as you're moving (by bike) I find just about all meterological conditions
bearable if not fun...
