It's not goofy; it's gorgeous! That will put a smile on the face of anyone
who rides it -- or one who sees it as it glides by.

2014-01-04 Thread iamkeith
Marc,

As I said, no grievance or hard feelings whatsoever! At the price you sold
it to me for, it was worth the risk and worth the effort, and I'm really
happy with what it turned out to be - even if it wasn't my original
vision. I have no regrets. As I said in that other thread, it now sees
way more use than I ever thought it could, too. And if you think about
it, that's a better fate for any bike than a life as garage wall-art! Glad
you got to see the final result, though! Happy new year!

Keith

Looking forward to my pariI mean pair.

I checked out the prototype 1 on the shelf at Riv-HQ yesterday, and
the tread was CRAZY thin. I'm glad Kirk put a little bit more meat on
them.

I guess I should buy that Bomba to accept these tires, too.

 Dear 650b fans,

Good news; the revisions to the Pari-Moto mould are

We were delayed by 4-5 weeks because of the rework needed to the mould, but
hopefully we’ll still get tires here by the end of March.

Again, a big thanks to all those who supported this project
early on and made the Pari-Moto a reality!

I hope it does make them Smile. I'm taking advantage of their really
generous SmileTrain promo to buy the Orange powdercoated 56cm Bomba on
the Frame Specials page. I'm smiling on the economics of it.

I give $250 to Smile Train, so Smile Train smiles

I buy an in-stock Bombadil, so I smile and Rivendell smiles

I get $187.50 credit towards the thing, and I get $200 worth of free
parts towards the build and I get a tax write off for $250

It's almost like stealing.

I think you're worrying unnecessarily, John.

To begin with, the issue with the CdlV isn't mainly that the tread is
thick as much as it is the specific type of tread, i.e., the
mini-knobs. The Trimline was every bit as thick in the tread as the
CdlV, but it had significantly less rolling resistance. The famed Hetre
has a rather thick tread as well, which accounts for its remarkable
longevity, and it's also exceptionally fast and supple.

I have a pre-paid pair of the Pari Motos and I was really hoping they
would be a lighter, thinner version of the Hetres, which are my
 favorite tires ever.

An extra half millimeter doesn't make for excessive thickness, although
it should add some useful service life.

Well, I'm not sure it's quite that bad - the thickness is well in line
with the Grand Bois Cypres, and I use that as a general purpose tire and
have ridden it on dirt roads. Thank goodness we don't have goatheads
here in Northern Virgnia and Southern Maryland, and our NoVA dirt roads
aren't hard on tires the way some are.

True, 38 mm is huge for a road tire. But the Paris-Moto will be 50

Respectfully have to disagree about the Hetre. When I ride with folks using
them, they are never at a disadvantage that I've seen. They seem to do
everything a Pasela can, while providing more comfort in the process. Now
this isn't anything steep or technical, but still a lot of dirt riding with
sections of both of the above. Again, I'm comparing them to 35-37mm Paselas
to which they seem about equal, and I ride those Paselas everywhere.

You can see them throughout these two sets:

I'm starting a rumor right now: Grand Bois finally located the lost

Pass it on ;-)

Dear 650b fans,

Good news; the revisions to the Pari-Moto mould are
complete, samples have been approved and the tires are headed to
production.

We were delayed by 4-5 weeks because of the rework needed to the
mould, but

hopefully we’ll still get tires here by the end of March.

Again, a big thanks to all those who supported this project
early on and made the Pari-Moto a reality!

Cheers,

I read this elsewhere: that the tread was too thin. It makes me
nervous that he'll pile too much rubber on this tire... and make it
more CdV'y -- I've been loving the supple and very thin Grand Bois
Cerfs, they're a dreamy ride, at a mere 28mm wide.

I have a pre-paid pair of the Pari Motos and I was really hoping they
would be a lighter, thinner version of the Hetres, which are my
favorite tires ever.

[RBW] Re: Fw: [650B] Pari-Moto Update 2/12/2010

2010-02-12 Thread Bill M.
From the latest Riv Reader on the Paris-Moto:
The sample shown actually weighs 291g, but with a 1.5mm tread
thickness. Kirk says the production tires will be thicker-about
2mm-and the 308g listed here is a prediction. Width shown is 38.15
mm.

From the VBQ test of the Hetre:
Width (on 25 mm Mavic Criterium rims): 42 mm
Weight: Sample 1: 392 g; Sample 2: 426 g
Thickness (casing + tread): 3.8 mm

Narrower and lighter than an Hetre? I'd say the P-M should fit the
bill. I have a pair of the tan walls on order. I expect to restrict
the P-M's to paved roads, I'll keep the Fatty Rumpkins for mixed-
surface use.

A lot of racing-style riders use Excel and Colorado Cyclist as a source for
racing parts, and one of those catalogs, maybe both, sells Surly frames and

though I have managed to fit it with 32mm tires and Berthoud fenders.
So, I guess it's just barely impractical :)

just curious as to why a bike like a cross-check, LHT or pacer
wouldn't be considered fully practical.  thanks,

i see. well, surely you weren't expecting the steamroller to be
mostly practical, somewhat practical, or even just practical ;)

I actually like that about surly - there are some real options in its
line-up. quasi-track, road, cx/all-rounder, touring, 29er,
extracycle, ss travel, etc. smart bikes.

i believe that this is the moots factory parking lot - the OP's point
being that there is probably more than 1 riv in the riv parking lot
(as there is only one moots in the moots parking lot).

[RBW] Re: Fw: Employee bikes

2009-06-24 Thread Ken Yokanovich

That makes a lot more sense.

I might be reading too much into the Rivendell Philosophy but my
guess is that from the way that Grant seems interested in giving back,
he probably pays a little more than the average for the bicycle
industry? Yes, looking through the photos of the staff bikes at
Rivendell, much of the bikes as an instrument for use is demonstrated.
All look well used and very practical. Nothing overly fancy either.

The topic of Employees Bikes is a good one though. I'm fascinated
with the bikes that bike shop employees generally ride. I worked at a
shop for nearly 15 years when one day I realized that none of the
employees working at the shop were riding any of the bikes that were
being sold at the shop. (That's when I decided to move on too...) Most
were either customer donations, resurectios, or Surly and chances are
they were all singlespeed. The well seasoned staff seems to look at
the parts as just something that makes the bike work.

As for the original post, there would appear to be 3 Surly's, the
seemingly bike-shop employee standard... inexpensive, mostly
practical, and readily available. The other looks like an older
(quill stem) Bianchi in their signature color. I like Moots a lot,
but beyond my willingness to part with the dollars. Chances are that
at a suggested retail price of $3200 for the YBB frame (in photo,) a
Moots is well beyond the range of most people. For the same amount of
money, I'd order another custom Rivendell extra fancy and get a
beautiful lugged fork too!

Yeah, sorry, I didn't see Moots anywhere in the first post and the
name doesn't mean anything to me, anyway, so seeing one of the bikes
in the photo with that name didn't speak to me. :) I get it now.
When I was at Rivendell I saw nothing there but Rivendells to answer
