Well, reading the Blahg my initial suspicion was confirmed this new Fancy
Cheviot is not a Cheviot at all it's something slightly different!? Apparently
new Cheviots will come out and then this new Platypus(?) Bike.
My overall impression of it is that it's longer. The one in the photo isn't too
bad, but it's a small. Once that's worked up to a 55 it'll be Clem L long I'm
sure.

Hm . . . .

Man, v brakes are really the only reason I’m considering this. I also love the
platypus name a lot. Can’t wait for the headbadge.
That said, I’m all in on 650b, and moved all my 700c stuff a while back. If
55cm was 650b, I probably wouldn’t be able to resist, but as it is there is too
much overlap with my Rosco bubbe mtn mixte cargo bike (that I’ll now wait for
someone to remind me is not an actual mixte)

That could be a good option. It brings back memories of Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood

When you disable the cable do the pads clear the frame front and rear ?

2020-05-16 Thread Garth

Have you ever met a Platypus ? While I have not either, I liken it to
meeting someone for the first time. Maybe it's a relative, a friend of a
friend, a co-worker, a bus driver with their name on their shirt just
anyone even a pet. Imagine hearing/seeing their name, maybe a name you
aren't familiar with, or a name that you react to because of what you
former associated with that name. All the while ... "they/them/it" are with
you in the same one presence. Regardless of their name, regardless of what
you think of them, here we are. Remember, you have no his-story with the
"other", it's a clean slate... it's just you and the "other". Are you going
to relate to the "other" because of what you associate the name with, or
are you going to simply interact with the shared uniqueness, without an
agenda, unconditionally ? Live and let Live ... Being and let Being.

You just might have fun without a story to either live up to or down
from everyone completely Being simply glorious !

I guess this is a long winded way of saying never judge a book by it's
cover, because sooner or later you realize all judgement is without
qualification, a Kangaroo court if you will, where not only no violation
has occurred, no violation is even possible. The joke is on the joke.

Platypus! It is certainly a word I enjoyed saying as a child (I assume there
was one at the Central Park Zoo). It was a quirky creature that stuck with me,
much like the Albatross, although my brain conveniently renamed it the Dodo
bird because.. well, that part is obvious... but, come to find out, Dutch
sailors ate the Dodo bird to extinction because they couldn’t fly and they
didn’t have a fear of humans (the bird, not the sailors) so the only one I ever
actually saw a video of was the Albatross.

I like the irony of Platypus being a sexy bike.

[RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-16 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Kind of the idea is to cram the biggest wheel into any frame that'll fit it
without actual cramming. As the front wheel inches more forward (a result
of longer tt, slacker ht, more rake), the room for a bigger tire, and
bigger tire with fender, increases. In back it's easy, just stretch the
chainstays. We have a ton of bikes here to measure, ride, test for that, so
it's pretty easy. Thanks for liking the V-ness of it, too. That was
emotionally hard for me, since the longreach Tektro brakes were made at our
request (John and I met with Tektro people before a trade show opened,
gave 'em numbers and wishes, and miracle of miracles, it took nothing more
than that, and it happened in about ten minutes.) That is a great brake, I
love it to death, but Will likes V-brakes, and he said, "Let's do
V-brakes," and sure, why not?

2020-05-15 Thread Jay Lonner
I like Platypus. It's a unique animal with an odd charisma, which is a good
fit for this frame - there's nothing else like it on the market. I've never
been a fan of the fanciful human names like Yves Gomez, Betty Foy, A. Homer
Hilsen, etc., so it's nice to see Riv turning back to the natural world for
inspiration. They'll never top Hunqapillar though!

Okay. I lambasted the name. But after a little time of thinking it over. I
could ride a Platypus. What does it really matter, right? If it’s a well
designed nice riding rig then I’ll consider it. It’s that bike or a Clem L for

an intriguing animal.

If we're having ideas on names, there is a breed of terrier named Kelly Blue,

Both potential names are embarrassing. A regal name for a regal bike A
lovely name for a lovely bike...

To add to Leah’s list of lovely Riv names, I submit Joe Appaloosa, which if
they shortened it to just Appaloosa would define that bike and it’s ride.

Do I really want my new bike to be a platypus??? The other option is just as
bad.

Kleermaker (Dutch for dragonfly, translates as tailor)
Trollslanda (Swedish: hobgoblin fly)

And my favorite: Globe Skimmer (species: *Pantala flavescens

Good Memory! (How often do we get to hear that these days?) I intend to do a
lot less lifting of this bike and just roll it out the door and off I go. I do
intend to E it at some point and at the point the weight is off the chart of
relevance. I had nice light parts on it — just a lot of them;-). I enjoyed
pimping my ride but intend to take a more restrained attitude with this one.
We’ll see how it goes. I do know one thing, like last time, it will not have

Just jumping in... might be totally off base, but, happened to watch a
interview with these guys behind this web app called Bike Insights, which,
allows one to compare two frame geometries over top of each other. One can
/ could add to the data base, might be helpful in this case?

[RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-14 Thread Roberta
Hi, Kiley.

As I recall, your Chev was the 60 size and you found it too heavy when
picking it up to lift over gates or fences or such. You might want to
review the pics of the current 60 size with the Orange Nu-Chev (could that
be N-ewe Cheviot, get it???) to see if the top tube is lower Or, ask
Riv. I'm pretty sure that the sizing chart on their site is the one that's
been there for years. I'm not sure if that will be the same sizing chart
for the N-ewe Cheviot (I hope they don't actually call it that, but it's
pretty cute for here).

If I'm in the middle pbh for my size (83pbh, I'm assuming 55), I'll be
getting one. I think I'm in the same decade of life as you and picking up
is important. I'll be having James at Analog build mine up "light." You
might want to do something similar (lighter saddle, wheels, tubeless, alum
handlebars, 1x) to make my entire bike riding/ownership experience
better. There's another thread about it. Bicycle Belle Ding Ding or Joe
started it, perhaps a month ago.

2020-05-13 Thread Doug Hansford
Roberta,
I am not a Riv owner. I had a Clem H for awhile but sold it because I have a
90s GT mountain bike I built into an all around commuter kind of bike. And, the
Clem was so similar. I decided to keep the GT and sell the Clem. I really like
my GT.
Over the past few years I’ve wanted a Rivendell but have yet to take the leap.
I’ve owned many bikes over the years including a few Surlys.

So, I don’t feel like I’ve ever REALLY owned a Riv. I’m looking forward to
seeing and feeling what all of you have been saying about how they ride. If
anyone could compare an Atlantis and a Cheviot i would be interested.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-13 Thread Roberta
Doug,

Are you a Riv owner now? I don't remember. The Atlantis is awesome!!

3 years ago I spent more money on my Joe A. than all the money I've spent
on all the bikes, gear, and maintenance in my entire lifetime. Probably
by 2 or 3 fold.

The first Riv I rode was a MUSA Atlantis. I knew I was going to be a Riv
owner from that first pedal stroke! Then, a Chev and a Sam. 4 months
later, a Joe A (purchased) and 2 years after that, an AHH (purchased).
I'd been riding the same Specialized Hardrock for 30 years. My Rivs are
the best money I've spent on "goods" and worth every penny. Oh, the joy
they bring me. And, because of them, the 10 fold increase in mileage that
I'm smiling the whole ride. More exercise, more happy, more health. Even
more friends.

YES YES YES. I will order one. Hopefully in RBW blue. "Where do I send

Riv will only exist if they can order and sell bikes. i hear the bike

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I have the best news!

First, I confess that since we knew there would be a Fancy Cheviot last year, I
have been sending emails to Rivendell. Prior to that, I had been checking in,
begging for the Anniversary Mixte to be made, but it was not to be. Grant said
that instead, there would be a “fancified Cheviot.” This Nu-Chev appears to be
what he meant, and it does resemble the sketch we saw on the Blahg.

Things went from bad to worse for the business over the next several months (we
know because we all read the blog posts) and it was looking like this model may
not even happen. I checked in from time to time about the bike but no promises
could be made. Best content yourself with your Clem, I told myself, possibly
have your mixte made using the custom option. These past 3 months I wrote a lot
of emails asking questions of poor Will and Vince because I knew their factory
time slot was approaching, and I wanted to get in line for a custom mixte with
Riv/Nobilette if Rivendell did not place their Cheviot order. No real time
estimate can be given until the purchase order is placed. Further complicating
things, the bike wasn’t quite ready - there were some design details to work
out. Until a purchase order is made, you can’t assume the bike is going to be
made...ever. The custom option was in my back pocket, but I really didn’t want
to spend the extra money - and also, Rivendell makes more money on a production
bike.

But today...May 13th is a great day, my friends. Will wrote to say that - this
morning - he placed his purchase order for the 2020 Fancy Cheviots!!! (I got
Will’s blessing to say this here.)

Let’s just let that sink
in

Ok, have we all composed ourselves? Are we wearing our clothes? No one has
soiled him/herself? Have we managed to remain upright? Ok, good, moving right
along... Will figures Nu-Chevs (his word) will be here late October/early
November. So, with luck, we’ll burn off our Thanksgiving turkey on the backs of
our Cheviots. If not that, they’ll be wrapped in bows under our Christmas
trees. But we’ll hope for November.

Now, here’s what I’m hoping. I’m hoping we clean them out of their Nu-Cheviot
stock. This is because 1. I feel like (true or not) I pressured them into
making the order and 2. Rivendell took a gamble placing a big bike order in the
current economic climate. They need to sell these bikes.

So, if you are a man who has been considering setting aside your objections to
mixte frames, you should order this Cheviot. If you are someone with stimulus
money burning a hole in your pocketses (I hope you get that reference), you
should order your very own shiny Nu-Cheviot. If you are one of my #RivSisters,
well, just look at this bike - It’s been made just for you. I don’t know what
it is exactly, but I’ve yet to hear a #RivSister say she has anything but heart
eyes for these Nu-Cheviots. Those split rear stays, those sexy swoops, those
voluminous 700c wheels - these bikes are different than any other Riv model
currently offered and this is a club I want to be in.

Save me a 55, I told Will. Does anyone else know for certain they’ll sign up
for the pre-order when it hits the website?

The future is bright and it looks like a mixte! 🤩😉

Funny story: I just read this quote I gave, then looked over at my new custom.

Yes, I was thinking about this the last couple days; if the 55 is 700 wheels I
might need to size down as well. My 52 Clementine is honestly big, on the upper
end of my comfort range, if it was a high frame, I'd be iffy on it.

My Atlantis is a 53 with 26" wheels, but on the new ones I'd need a 50.

I'll have to think on this some more!

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-06 Thread Leah Peterson
Ryan,

If I could get RBW to take my money I’d have gladly handed it over! Alas, not
taking pre-order money YET.

You are right - custom would get me the whole darn kit and caboodle, as they
say up North. I’ve contemplated both routes - custom, production, custom,
production, and more than once in this process. And depending upon the future
(WILL this bike be made?) of the Fancy Cheviot and the timeline (do we get it
in a few months or 2 years?) I still may change my mind. I can wait a while,
but if I have to wait as long as the Hillibike folks have been waiting for
their bikes, no, that’s a deal-breaker and I’ll go custom.

But...the Fancy Cheviot is nearly 100% what I would have made as a custom
anyway. I don’t care about the fancy lugs much, so it really doesn’t make sense
to spend the extra money. So, instead of going custom, I could get this Fancy
Cheviot and then put really fancy parts on it and have it painted red, and
still come in at less money than I would for a custom. I’m hoping to make the
Cheviot as elegant as my Clem is goofy.

So far I’m thinking:
Dyno, the expensive kind. 😬
Another light and fancy wheelset, tubeless if I like it on my Clem
Possibly a 1x, but we’ll see
Light parts (aluminum Boscos instead of steel, etc)

So, $$$. Better stay with production, unless production isn’t
happening/severely delayed.

Also, Riv makes more money if you buy their production bikes than if you order
a custom. Another perk.

Tom, you are absolutely right. Grant says the 60 rides superiorly to the 55 and
encourages you to get the 60 if you can make it work. I happened to ride
Grant’s 60 when I visited in 2019, and got too acquainted with that top tube
when I jumped off that bike. Shudder. Not how a mixte should be! I don’t
remember actual numbers, but I remember looking at the geometry chart and
seeing that the 60’s top tube was MUCH higher than 55. Dealbreaker!

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-04 Thread Mark Roland
The potential for name embarrassment has been discussed (possibly way back
in this thread). As far as the name of this model, when the new Cheviut
design was unveiled in a recent newsletter, Will mentioned that it was
thought the changes might be substantial enough to warrant giving the
bicycle a new name, and that this idea was currently under discussion.
Since that mention, no final word has been issued from RBW headquarters
regarding a possible name change, or whether it might involve an anagram
contest, or any other information. Just speculation here on the list.

That's what I thought, but it seemed like the talk was breaking down between
"the new" Cheviot and Leah's "Fancy Cheviot". And then discussion of it having
a new name seemed to indicate it was going to be something of a departure from
the old, but based on the photo it seems to be more of a refinement than a
totally new thing, so . . . .
New name? I don't care, but please not something silly. It's hard enough to get
our local police to take Bicycle theft seriously; just try telling them that in
addition to your bike being stolen, it was called a Roscoe Bubbe. Even worse
trying to convince them that said Roscoe Bubbe was worth $2,700.
Pause to wait for them to stop laughing . . . . 🙄

2020-05-03 Thread Joe Bernard
Mas: I don't have official word on it, but the fact that the new one may still
be called a Cheviot tells me it's a replacement. The line of succession is
Betty/Yvez, which was followed by the updated Cheviot, which will be followed
by this update. Is what I'm assuming.

I guess one thing I am not clear on; is this Fancy Cheviot a new model (hence a
different name) or is it going to replace the current model entirely (which was
my assumption)?
In other words will there be a regular Cheviot & a fancy Cheviot.?

2020-05-02 Thread Leah Peterson
Oh, David, my heart belongs to that lithe-looking mixte. I’ll wait, but I’ll
also whine about it to pass the time. 😂 Therefore, when you see my posts on
this thread just scroll on by! So much angst. It all goes back to the rumored
Anniversary Mixte - I’ve essentially been waiting for that bike since it was
announced last year, and then kept waiting when I heard the project was nixed
and the “fancified Cheviot” was coming instead. So, lots of waiting.
Interminable waiting.

I won’t get sympathy from the Hillibike crowd - they have been waiting as long
or longer for their bikes.

If you have not used this site, it is very useful for visualizing the
difference between two bikes across brands and models. You can see a
graphic of one bike laid on top of a second.

Unfortunately the Susie is not yet in their database. Like Garth, I prefer
the longer head tube of the Susie. My 51 Appaloosa has a 16 cm head tube
while the 53cm Susie measured 23 cm, so it will be much easier to get a
higher handlebar position.

I ordered an orange one but the other choice is that nice Riv blue
What do you think, Leah? A 53 or 56 Susie could be an earlier option as
delivery should be this month!

That's like a veritable land yacht ! I'm about to find that out whenever
my Susie Slugged-a-Stone gets here. I'll be banging it all over the place,
good thing it'll have big tires and no fenders.

In regards to paint, well I like variety myself. Give the blues and greens
a break and do a nice bright red, and maybe some sort of cream color. I
mean I see blue sky and green grass every day of my life... how about some
contrasting complimentary colors !

I measured the Medium (53cm) Susie demo frame at RBWHQ as having a 125

The 59 cm Clem is listed by BikeInsights as having a 124 cm wheelbase (and

They list the 52 cm Clem at 116.5 cm (and 650b wheels)
