Of note: Eroica California now allows bikes with aero brake levers so long as they don't have built in shifters: http://www.eroicacalifornia.com/registration Bar-end shifters are ok too, so long as they don't index. Personally, my impression of the event depends on how I consider it: When I think of Eroica as a ride but with lots of arbitrary rules it rankles a bit. When I think of Eroica as a parade that happens to be unusually athletic then I like it a lot. I prefer to think of it the second way. Considering attending this year! Re: [RBW] Re: Grant's Stock on Bike Forums has Appreciated
I am pretty sure bar end shifters are allowed, since they were quite common in the peloton in the '40s and '50s, if not '60s. Yep; http://www.eroicagaiole.com/regulation. Also, Rivendells too have to meet the criteria; mine as presently ridden, would not. It's all a bit precious, though I can rather easily forgive this particular sort of preciousness as it happens to agree with my personal tastes and prejudices. It's *my* kind of preciousness. It is funny to think that my 2 Rivendells fixed gears would, as currently ridden, count as too modern for the rules, with clipless pedals and aero brake levers. Also, I think hub gears, at least 2 and 3 speed hub gears, are allowed -- my only hope, should I (as I have dreamed) enter an Eroica. I think that the S3X counts as a KOF for the AW. That snide remark would have inflamed me; stupid woman; a casual (by Grant's standards) cyclist making fun of someone who's been deep inthe business for decades. [RBW] Re: Grant's Stock on Bike Forums has Appreciated
Wow that exchange was painful! I did get a chuckle out of some of it. I think Mobile 155's glass is definitely half empty. I am still getting my head around the Rivendell paradigm. I loved Grant's recent story about the girl who saw him on a trail on Mount Diablo and laughed at him and said "nice basket". It makes me chuckle even though Grant didn't see the humor of the situation. Grant's response was very interesting. See quote below... It is interesting to see how people don't get "just ride". They are so deeply entrenched in the racing is the measure of goodness or greatness paradigm. "Last week on a morning group ride (me, Mark, Brian, Roman) here out on the trails, I was grunting up the last hill on my basketed CLEM, and they were standing there with three other riders, and as I was cresting, one of the unknown riders said ”nice basket!” with a chuckle. Then to the group, “You guys should ride Eroica—it’d be perfect for you.” All harmless on the surface, but it bothered and bugged me that she was so unaccustomed to seeing unsuspended steel bikes that she thought it must have been a philosophy of life; and that we rubes would enjoy riding with others of our kind. Like, *hey Amish—you should meet the Mennonites—you got the same kinda deal going on, with the clothes and all!* It can’t be too surprising and I shouldn’t get t upset (I’m not, and this is the extent of my venting), but we were there in the open space, with nothing but rolling hills and oaks and dustry trails and barbed-wire fences, riding low key, low tech, perfectly suited bikes (Mark: Custom cross; Brian: Homer; Roman: Sam). The new group was on dual-suspension carbon mtn bikes and had high-key clothing on…which is fine, but the only thing about us that stuck out in the whole scene was nothing, and as the ownerguy of Rivendell, I didn’t like the characterization that I sensed was going on, even if it was all wrong about it and just too defensive. I don’t always have the perfect clue on things like that. Our bikes are normal. They’re just bikes, really good ones, but they’re designed by riding them, not by trends and fear of falling behind them, or out of a need to match our competition’s X-price point model. They aren’t what they aren’t, and they ought to get to be what they are. Argh. OK, enough of that, and happy days are here again. MAKE WEB FORUMS GREAT AGAIN!!! ;) I don't mind being called out by a person with a thoughtful response, often times, I will learn something by listening and be enriched by it. But mindless rants, well, I have to agree with Ron, it's better to just block people who just post a continuous stream of drivel. This email group and a couple other bike related groups (with many of the same posters) are remarkably free of such content, which is what makes them great. -Jim On Thu, Oct 6, 2016 at 7:44 AM, Ron Mcwrote: > People call you out there for no good reason. People call you out there for no good reason. There is a general reaction that "my way is best" and anything different is somehow trying to take away their choices. Any time you're quoted, it's automatically flagged, essentially giving you a chore to open it. The people who are pointless and rude, I simply put them on my ignore list - I have 21 names on my ignore list there. But again, the point is that Grant, Rivendell, Jan, Compass tires are known and respected by the general majority, so the Just Ride word is getting out. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I must be one of the few whom enjoys the banter. I don't get much out constant agreement, I more like a debate class. I don't want two differing opinions, I enjoy all opinions, even the ones you guys call "crazy' or 'rude". That's what makes life fun for me.Its also what keeps me from posting more often, tender feelings and such. Its nice that we can all agree on this type of bike though. This is why I like Twitter so much. It's a forum where I can choose who to hear from, and exclude screeching lunatics who are only there to agitate. I don't believe in echo chambers so I follow lots of folks with politics/ideas I disagree with - studies show that this "mingling" tends to reduce the most extreme views for parties on both sides of that relationship, which I have found to be true in myself - but I don't have to listen to unfiltered madness from trolls. That issue is obviously not the case at RBW Bunch, but it's a problem on most forums. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I've posted in that thread!! I always have to check out any thread with Rivendell, RBW or Grant Petersen in the title. The "What is the poor man's Rivendell" thread is fascinating. I forget how many pages it's up to but it's an old and very long thread. http://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/631114-what-poor-man-s-rivendell.html On Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 10:34:29 AM UTC-5, Ron Mc wrote: > > > http://www.bikeforums.net/general-cycling-discussion/1067000-grant-petersen-threat-menace.html > > > > In the past, this group has linked to some virulent threads about GP and > RBW on Bike Forums. > The mods there don't seem to earn their keep in general, and extreme + > rude opinions are often allowed. > In spite of the title, a current thread has run 9 pages and the likes > overwhelmingly out-number the detractions. > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Grant's Stock on Bike Forums has Appreciated
I frequent a number of other bike forums - that particular one being one of them. Over the years of spending time on chat forums, I've learned to heavily discount a lot of what I read. I mean, anyone can post pretty much anything they want. I used to spend a lot of time on guitar forums and it was exactly the same way. Some comments and posters in general were real head scratchers. I really like this forum as people seem friendly or at least pretty knowledgeable. Haven't seen anything near a flame war here. Kudos to the group and the moderator for that!
