Re: [TANKS] Re: QF 25 Pounder Build

2014-07-28 Thread Caleb Smith
Hey, Chris,
I forgot to mention that the marker is attached to a springed door hinge.
The hinge doesn't have quite enough strength to balance the marker, but I
think once the outer pvc barrel is mounted, the marker will be just about
balanced on the pivot point.
Seems that a standard servo will work for now, I guess if I strip it out, I
can just upgrade to a larger size.

A couple quick stories about the S-Tank during that weekend ...

While the S-Tank was backing full speed (which is pretty quick), Will M made a
great medium long range shot to plug the S-tank's side.  He immediately started
crowing, "I hit it!  I hit that thing!"  lol.

After the Tiger's track broke, I saw the Cromwell moving up behind the Tiger.
Trying to save my teammate, I moved the S-tank between the two tanks and facing
the Cromwell ... so the Cromwell fired over top of the S-tank to take out the
Tiger.  :P

[TANKS] power switch question

2014-07-28 Thread Doug Conn
I have a very basic question about the power switch for our tanks. The rules
wisely require an externally accessible switch that kills power to the tank.
I've seen those huge, ugly, battery kill switches with the giant red
removable key handle. Other than that, what's a good choice for a main
switch ? I'd like something a little more compact.

Normally this would be no big deal, but when you consider the currents that
flow through most of drive systems you quickly exceed the 30A capacity of
most heavy duty toggle switches. Bad Kitty just sort of ignores the switch
rating as I suspect many of the vehicles in the hobby do.

I've been thinking of using the external switch to supply power to relay
windings and using the relay to supply the main tank power. What do you
think ?

- Doug

I've been doing some research on what I want to do for the rotate. Steve's
original idea that I want to use is a geared motor at the end of the gun
carriage with a spiked wheel that would spin the gun 360 degrees. After
looking through many websites, I think I found a motor that will work.
I'll be running this gun at 7.4 volts, so the motor will be spinning about
half it's rated RPMs, I think.

Here is the motor.
http://www.dx.com/p/high-torque-80rpm-12v-dc-geared-motor-91628?tc=USD&gclid=CjwKEAjwxtKeBRDMzoeQmYn5uHcSJACGCF3D5p5zz3sy2zZyJL-lgL8qzTj8MfNhtCW4q1FLSNQh3xoCsXzw_wcB#.U9bwumOTFIq

Do you guys think the motor will work for what I intend to use if for?
Also, will a 12v door lock actuator work ok on 7 volts?
Thanks,
Caleb

More from that first battle session. The dialog is hilarious. Pay
attention to when it dawns on Frank there is an unholy alliance , temporarily,
of
tanks versus artillery.
Later, watch as Pauls PzII wades into a hailstorm of hurt. Love the
dance. LOL.

I forgot that this battle was the debut for 3 new assets.
Mike's Swedish S Tank and his Spartan supply vehicle.. Wickedly fast!!!
And T-79, my beloved Abomination, PzII Ausf J.

Enjoy, and more to come.

Re: [TANKS] power switch question

2014-07-28 Thread Frank Pittelli
I think that's a good idea, Doug. In fact, I was going to do the same thing
in the Semovente but never got around to it. I normally use a separate 12V
switch for my control circuits that I turn on before the main 24V switch.
So, it would be easy to take power from the 12V switch to drive a
sufficiently large relay to switch the main 24V power circuit. A second
switch could also be installed between the 12V switch and the relay to
allow the electronics to be activated without activating the main power.
Both switches would be switching low power, making them easier to install
on the rear of the tank.
