Re: [TANKS] "The Tank Farm" in Nokesville, VA, 24 - 25 September 2016

2016-09-27 Thread Mike Lyons
A great day!
Beautiful weather, lots of people attended the event and we had around 200
kid-visits (many repeaters) at our activity.

Frank and John set up half a dozen silhouette targets of tanks and
vehicles, plus one of an ambulance, and a post with 6 circular targets.
A couple of shooters hit the ambulance and had to perform The Walk of Shame
to go wipe it off.

John had kids taking 10 shots each with the Navarone Gun
.
Prizes were awarded for the most hits in the shortest time each hour, plus
instant prizes for first-shot hits on the post targets.

Frank had kids occasionally driving the Semovente
 to attract
visitors when things were quiet (which wasn't often)
and was promoting the hobby to anyone who would listen.
Several adults were very interested in (and many more just amused by) the
R/C Tank Combat concept.

David and his buddy Dean had kids working Bazooka Joe
 while
I oversaw Len Opie
.
Kids were allowed 3 shots on each and about 75% were able to hit one of the
closer targets.
Some of the best shooters were young girls.

Bazooka Joe's marker locked up after about 100 rounds.
I suspect it got liquid CO2 in there and something broke and jammed the
bolt open.
I need to rearrange the layout so I can tilt the bottle.

Len Opie had a new rotate servo mechanism installed the night before and
ran flawlessly* all day,
on a single set of 4 AA batteries for the R/C receiver and 3 servos, for an
estimated 500 rounds.
* I had to manually cock the marker a little each time because it wouldn't
fully cock with the trigger depressed.
I was using a toggle switch to fire and separate joysticks for rotate and
elevate.
Unless the toggle switch was rapidly reset it caused the problem.
Not a big deal for a single-shot asset.
A momentary pushbutton switch on the R/C transmitter would solve the
problem
but I plan to build a custom control box as used with RL001.

At the end of the day the closer targets were almost completely covered in
paintball goo.

When a pair of 12ish boys came back for their third time through I asked if
they had seen everything else.
They told me "*Yeah, but this is the coolest thing here.*"
This at an event with dozens of armored vehicles, many other vehicles, a
helicopter to sit in, horse cavalry,
working dogs, lots of people in uniform with weapons, LEGO building, tank
demos, flamethrower demos, and more!

[TANKS] Multiple receivers for one 2.4 GHz transmitter

2016-08-19 Thread Mike Lyons
I believe T040 and
the new SCC field gun
have two independent R/C receivers
operated from a single transmitter.

Is this possible using the "latest and greatest" 2.4 GHz technology
where a receiver is "bound" to a transmitter using a little dongle
and the receiver retains that binding?

I made something very similar, but for the broad plane surfaces I made ribs

[TANKS] Re: Gettysburg 2014OCT26 battle reports - Battle 3, Bazooka Joe

2014-10-31 Thread Mike Lyons
It seemed there were as many cameras as assets on the battlefield
and Bazooka Joe was no exception.

This video http://youtu.be/555qt4PBXpI includes a lot of side-by-side
footage
and some nice sequences of most of the the tanks.
The side-by-side starts perfectly synchronized but gradually slips.

It runs just over 30 minutes. View full screen for best results.
Reply with your favorite moments (including timestamps).

This battle was on a relatively small field (about 20 x 40 yards).
The usual 4-shot kill rule was in effect, but an asset could only hit
another asset once.
Frontal hits don't count (except from the Bazooka).
The one-shot-one-kill for the Bazooka was NOT in effect.
He was positioned about mid-field on the sideline.

Highlights:
- Abomination dancing up a tree
- Bad Kitty doing the herky-jerky
- Several hits by Bazooka Joe, including 3 out of 4 shots in just over a
minute
- Lots of chatter
- Lots of background sounds, including frenetic volleys as time expires

Please let me know of any corrections or suggestions.
Feedback is welcome.

Re: [TANKS] Remote Triggering - R/C digital switch

2014-10-29 Thread Mike Lyons
The output of the Pololu switch is active-*high*.
The input to the marker is active-*low *(the trigger is a low-side switch).
The digital signal needs to be inverted.
(Note: The latest version of the Pololu series of switches has an
inversion function
but this changes the direction of the activation signal (from above
center' to below center.
I believe it addresses the need to flip the controls of a combat robot
when it has been inverted, *i.e.* turned upside down.)

I connected a 1K resistor to a +5V active digital output of a microprocessor
to feed the base of a small, general-purpose NPN transistor
connected across the trigger contacts (emitter to the black wire, *i.e.*
marker ground)
of my electronic marker and it works fine.
A 1 ms on time (the shortest pause time on the PICAXE I'm using to
test) is plenty.
I assume the same solution would work for the Pololu Digital Switch.

For this application (R/C firing of an electronic marker)
I recommend the Pololu Switch with Small Low-Side MOSFET.
The extra cost $1.26 more than the Digital Switch, less the resistor and
transistor)
is justified by the simple implementation (see above
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rctankcombat/hu2G5C2fVzo/UG0uZ0niHzsJ ).

Re: [TANKS] Remote Triggering - R/C digital switch works fine ... I think!

2014-10-29 Thread Mike Lyons
I think Frank is onto something here.

Once I understood the active-low issue
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rctankcombat/hu2G5C2fVzo/zOoDQ_Q1hlwJ
I tried holding my fire button down (to put the switch into the
active-high state)
and manually pulling the trigger.

I also tried holding down the fire button and releasing it briefly,
assuming the reverse logic would work.

No luck.

The R/C switch is running off the 6 V R/C receiver power.
The marker has a 9 V battery for its supply.
The pull-up in the marker logic may be too much for the digital signal to
overcome.
Interfacing systems with different signal levels is always a challenge.

Correction above: toggle should read rocker.

I found a sample schematic here
http://schwarttzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Hummer-H3-Vehicle-Access.pdf

In Figure 1 there is an unlabeled white rectangle which I presume is the
computer.
The inputs Lock, DR Unlock, and Unlock are on the bottom and the
corresponding outputs are on the top.
Each output drives a relay which switches an actuator.
The computer probably doesn't do much more than pulse the outputs and break
ties in the event of wiring faults.

2014-10-10 Thread Mike Lyons
I tested the solution described below (4.2) today and it didn't work as
expected ... but I believe it's a viable solution.
Whaaa Stay tuned.

I built a Pololu R/C Switch with Digital Output.
The process was almost identical to the previous one for the Pololu MOSFET
switch,
except I needed two 2-position screw terminals as the two connections I
needed were not adjacent.
On the upside if I ever want to know the GOOD state and/or tap into the VCC
it's ready to go.

I turned on the marker power and my remote controller.
When I turned on the power to the receiver (which also powers the switch
board) the marker immediately fired.
The switch board blinked its LED briefly about once a second as specified.
I pressed the FIRE button on my controller and the switch board LED stayed
on as specified while the button was pressed but the marker didn't fire.
I pressed the manual trigger on the marker and it fired once, but didn't
fire one subsequent presses.
I pressed the FIRE button on my controller a few times and nothing.
I pressed the manual trigger and again it fired once but no more.

After scratching my head I realized the problem and a potential solution.

The logic device has a small battery of its own, or is using the R/C

The motor switched by the SSR (or whatever) has its own big fat battery.
12 V SLA or similar looks good.

The two sides are isolated by the SSR (or whatever).

[TANKS] Remote Triggering - R/C MOSFET switch works fine

2014-10-08 Thread Mike Lyons
I finally found the time and motivation to test the Pololu RC Switch with
Small Low-Side MOSFET http://www.pololu.com/product/2802
It works as expected. Bazooka Joe is now a little more bionic (strictly
speaking he's more electronic, less electromechanical than he was).

The marker in RL001 http://rctankcombat.com/rocket-launchers/RL001/ is a
Spyder Imagine. A 9V battery powers a circuit board that drives a solenoid
that flicks the sear to fire the marker. The trigger presses a SPST
microswitch. According to my digital multimeter the microswitch passes a
constant 480 uA (0.48 milliamps) when closed and one contact is at ground
level (i.e. it's a low-side switch). I was surprised the current was so
low, I guess it's driving a Darlington pair?

I soldered a servo-style lead to the IN, VRC, and adjacent GND pins on the
MOSFET board, and soldered a tiny link over the VRC and VCC pads to power
the board from the R/C interface. I soldered a 2-position screw terminal
block (with 0.1 pin spacing, very small!) to the LO and adjacent GND pins
(on the wrong side because a surface-mount device was in the way on the
right side). The marker has a pair of wires soldered to the trigger
microswitch contacts and I connected the other ends of the wires to the
screw terminals, making sure the ground side was connected correctly (GND
pin to ground side of switch).

When operational an indicator LED on the switch board blinks on briefly
about once a second to indicate is has a signal. When the fire signal is
sent the LED blinks off briefly about once a second and the marker fires
with the first blink. The rate of fire (cycling the R/C signal to re-fire
the marker) is plenty fast ... no specifics here because Bazooka Joe is a
single-shot asset so rate of fire isn't an issue.

Conclusion:
I see at least 4 options for firing an electronic marker via R/C:

1. Ignore the electronics and use a servo with an arm or cam to
mechanically move the trigger or the microswitch actuator.
Pros: Simple, cheap, proven. You can see if it's working.
Cons: The servo and arm/cam need to be aligned correctly with the trigger -
needs mechanical engineering. Subject to wear-and-tear.

2. Use an R/C relay-based switch (examples include the PicoSwitch
https://www.dimensionengineering.com/products/picoswitch and the Pololu
RC Switch with Relay http://www.pololu.com/product/2804). I used the
PicoSwitch previously and it worked fine (as long as the pulses weren't
more than 500 ms either side of center, which shouldn't be a problem with
typical R/C gear).
Pros: Very small, easy to connect (polarity not an issue), voltage/current
not an issue with typical markers, clicking sound confirms operation.
Cons: Some soldering required for cheaper products (around $10), not for
more expensive ones (around $20). Needs electrical and/or mechanical
engineering.

3. Use a FET-based switch as above.
Pros: Very small, LED shows status.
Cons: Must get polarity right when connecting, some soldering required.
 Needs electrical engineering.

4. Given the low current I observed it wouldn't be a stretch to build a
home-grown solution. A Pololu RC Switch with Digital Output
http://www.pololu.com/product/2801, or a microprocessor (PIC
http://www.microchip.com/pagehandler/en-us/products/picmicrocontrollers,
PICAXE http://www.picaxe.com/, Arduino http://www.arduino.cc/, Raspberry
Pi http://www.raspberrypi.org/, etc) with a resistor or two and a BJT or
FET should do the trick. I'll look into this someday.
Pros: Customizable (e.g. with an MPU you can activate based on certain
signal characteristic/s). Cheapish if the parts are lying around your junk
box.
Cons: Much assembly required. Needs electronic engineering.

All these solutions are on the order of $10 or less if you can do some of
the work, $20 or so if you just want to plug it in and go.

Re: [TANKS] Remote Triggering - R/C MOSFET switch works fine

2014-10-08 Thread Mike Lyons
Very interesting. Thanks, Frank!

This suggests an even simpler and lower-cost solution:

4.1 Connect the output of a logic-level device (examples in 4 above) to
the high side of the trigger,
and the ground of the device to the marker ground (the low side of the
trigger would be convenient).

The logic levels don't matter as long as high is high enough that the
marker doesn't interpret it as low and not so high that it blows
something (unlikely),
and low is ground level.

[TANKS] Limiting rate of fire

2013-12-18 Thread Mike Lyons
Over the years there has been sporadic discussion along the lines of the
following:

On Tuesday, December 17, 2013 10:30:17 PM UTC-5, RocketMan wrote:

... One rule I wish we had but is probably unenforceable is a rate of fire
limit. It's ludicrous to let tanks fire a few times per second. ...

I have developed a small, cheap device that sits between an R/C receiver
and a servo (or compatible device), and is capable of (among other things)
modifying the servo signal. I have named it the Servo Signal Analysis and
Modification Unit (SSAMU).

One potential use for this is limiting the rate of fire of paintball
markers operated by R/C. On detecting a fire signal the device would pass
it through, then wait some fixed period before looking for a subsequent
signal. For the sake of discussion suppose the complete cycle time was 5
seconds.

A prototype has been submitted to RCTCHQ for evaluation. A first-run
production batch is being assembled - I've completed and tested one and
several more will be completed soon at which point I will submit samples
to the Committee for Review of Advanced Prototypes. Time is the greatest
enemy, as always.

This solution requires NO modification to the asset (other than unplugging
the servo from the receiver, plugging the device into the receiver, and the
servo into the device). The device is programmable so the input signal
threshold, output signal value/s and duration/s, and cycle period can be
adjusted as needed. A nice side benefit of this device is that it can
provide consistent triggering (and resetting if needed) - for example it
could be programmed to move the servo to an on position for 0.25s, a
reset position for 0.5s, and then back to an off position for the
remainder of the cycle. (If the asset owner wishes to retain manual
control over such functions the device can pass through all signal levels
other than the rate-limited fire signal). It can also provide
semi-automatic firing - if the input signal stays above the threshold the
SSAMU can generate the fire signal once every cycle.

If there is interest in trying this solution in battle I will donate the
devices and provide on-site programming.

Note: Based on an online
surveyhttps://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rctankcombat/pii27bEJUFk,
Web site pages, and battle observations it appears most if not all mobile
assets use servos (or compatible devices such as R/C switches) to fire
their markers and would be suitable for this device. A different solution
will be needed for assets which use direct switching or other non-servo
activation, e.g. some field artillery. Researchers at the
DODhttp://www.rctankcombat.com/teams/DOD/ labs
are scratching their heads over this as I write; a proposal
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Mississippidefid=3413474to
verbally announce ordinal numbers alternating with the name of a southern
U.S. state has been rejected as being overly complex and geographically
insensitive. The potential solution space appears to be quite large -
other posters have apparently enumerated at least 555 designs.

Apologies if I'm rehashing an old discussion ...

HEAT rounds changed the game so that heavy armor plating wasn't very

Has consideration ever been given to equalizing modern tanks like

Steve's proposal would make this point moot.

*** It sits between a standard R/C receiver and a standard servo (or

It takes power from the input wire that is connected to the receiver supply

It has its own regulator and will tolerate supply voltages up to 30 V
although R/C receivers are typically 4.8-6 V.
It accepts a standard servo signal which Frank informs me is either 5 V or
3.3 V with newer receivers.
It generates a standard servo signal at its regulated supply voltage which
is the input power supply voltage capped to 5 V.
I have tested it with a C12C using 6 V power supply. I plan to test it (or
ask local battlers to test it) using conventional R/C/ gear soon.

2013-11-04 Thread Mike Lyons
If you want to base a request for advantages based on realism I suggest
it's only fair to include similar disadvantages.

For example, that ISU-152 of yours with its enormous main gun has a much
lower rate of fire and ammunition capacity than typical MBTs.
If you argue for a one-shot-kill rule others might counter with limiting it
to X rounds and firing only once every Y seconds.

If you want to build one of these because it looks really cool I support
you 100%.
If you are trying to cherry-pick the rules to give you a super-weapon
against the established base I doubt you'll find many backers.
The rules seem to be working well and giving operators of a wide ranges of
assets some good fun.
FYI it's hard enough to remember what happened during a hectic battle
without making the scoring complicated.

Build something, bring it out, show it off, have some fun, meet some great
people.

Re: [TANKS] Re: Suggestion: New How to motor article on website.

2013-10-20 Thread Mike Lyons
A tank rolls on its road wheels, which in turn roll on the inside surfaces
of the track links.
The drive sprocket pulls (directly if rear-drive, via the rear idler if
front-drive) on the portion of the track behind the last road wheel.
Since the track is pinned to the ground by the weight on the road wheels
the net effect is to move the tank chassis forward.
The rate of movement is determined by the number of track links the drive
sprocket can affect over time.
If the drive sprocket is toothed it's a simple calculation (number of teeth
x track link length including space).

If the drive is not toothed you could wrap the track around it to get a
reasonable approximation.

Another approximation is to calculate the diameter of the drive drum.
Adding twice the track thickness to the drive drum would give the outer
circumference of the track
as it passes around the drum (ignoring any non-circularity due to flat
links)
but be aware that the space between links is typically greater in this
condition than on the ground where it counts.

manually as needed for testing) and screwed the other ends into the relay.
It fires when the RC control is about half-way to one end.

I'm about to test a Pololu low-side MOSFET switch a (see
http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1210 ) and will report when I have
news. This will require some soldering but is less than half the price.
My marker trigger switch operates on the low side (connecting the
electronics to the circuit ground) so this is ideal. The circuit diagrams
I could find for the Turnigy thing seem to indicate it's a high-side switch.

there is shipping too ... heh.

5) Fire control is the simplest of all systems. If your marker has an
electronic trigger, you only need a stock servo ($10) and a micro-switch
 ($1).

[TANKS] Re: Quartermaster Provision Requisition

2013-09-09 Thread Mike Lyons
I will be attending with my #1 cadet (9 years old).
We'll arrive late Saturday afternoon and stay for the Sunday battles.

Bazooka Joe has had an overhaul and looks to be in fine fighting form.
I can neither confirm nor deny that a brand-new asset will debut at this
event.

[TANKS] RCTC standard for tow hitches

2013-08-10 Thread Mike Lyons
I'm working on a towed artillery piece.
Is there a standard/convention/recommendation/guideline/suggestion for the
towing hardware?
I'm leaning towards a simple eye bolt on the towed end.
What (if anything) do existing vehicles have on the towing end?

[TANKS] Bazooka Joe's Debut

2012-10-01 Thread Mike Lyons

*Bazooka Joe's Debut*

I had Bazooka Joe operational around 2am so I hit the sack for a few hours,
took care of a family commitment, and hit the road eager to put Joe into
action. Two hours later I had gone about 3 miles (Washington area traffic
+ accident = gridlock) and eventually arrived after the first battle had
ended.

After sides had been picked (Joe was picked last, only fair for an unknown
quantity) the RCTC Rules Committee voted unanimously (1-0) to approve a
one shot, one kill rule for Joe. I liked this idea as I couldn't imagine
how I would be able to get multiple shots loaded and fired against a mobile
tank.

As seen from our home
basehttp://www.rctankcombat.com/battle-reports/BridgeTooFar/photos/DSC_0598-large.jpgthere
 was a
wide stone
bridgehttp://www.rctankcombat.com/battle-reports/BridgeTooFar/photos/DSC_0591-large.jpgon
 the left flank, a
narrow wooden
bridgehttp://www.rctankcombat.com/battle-reports/BridgeTooFar/photos/DSC_0593-large.jpgin
 the center, and a
shallow
fordhttp://www.rctankcombat.com/battle-reports/BridgeTooFar/photos/DSC_0594-large.jpgon
 the right.
The Navarone Gun was set up to cover the center bridge and I positioned Joe
in some broad-leafed plants on the right side of the stone bridge (on the
right edge of the photo). On the far side the road went straight for about
5 yards then turned right. There was a narrow goat track running parallel
to the stream on the far side, joining the road very close to the bridge.

There was a pot of gold in the center of the bridge so I took a few
practice shots to get an idea of the range. This was the first time I had
fired a paintball from the assembled unit, and I was pleased to get in the
general area after a handful of shots.

When the battle started there was a lot of action in the center. Joe
brought his Hetzer down to the bridge and collected the pot of gold with no
resistance. After a few minutes Frank's Tiger came clanking along the road
from the rear right. As he turned my way I lined up for a flanking shot –
it was straight but high by a couple of feet. It's a lot harder to judge
the elevation on the short bazooka than on the long guns. I reloaded
quickly but Frank was approaching front-on and I had no shot. It didn't
take long for him to score the first hit ever on an armed infantryman,
knocking Joe' helmet flying. I only found it while cleaning up at the end
of the day, about 3 feet from this position.

Later Frank approached more cautiously, creeping through the long grass
between the road and the goat track. Again I had no shot as he presented
only his front. He landed a nice shot from about 15 feet away.

After reincarnating again I moved Joe across the bridge to the junction of
the road and the track. Things were quiet for a while so I tried a couple
of long shots into the area behind the center bridge. I didn't hit
anything (too high again) but it sure caused confusion for the enemy
commanders over there. It also attracted the attention of the Cromwell. Steve
worked his way along the goat track and showed me only a brief side shot
for a moment - I took the shot but was wide by a few inches. While I tried
to reload the Cromwell raced up and blew Joe away.

After being killed by Frank yet again (and accidentally hitting him square
in the chest – sorry!), there was a long time with no action (I later
learned most of my comrades were in the repair shop). I relocated to the
enemy's side of the battlefield, setting up close to the big tree shown
herehttp://www.rctankcombat.com/battle-reports/BridgeTooFar/photos/DSC_0602-large.jpg
. Doug's Tiger was circling Turncoat Tyng's Cromwell about 30 feet away. I
took my time to line up a shot and splattered Doug's rear – one shot, one
kill! A successful debut, breaking even on combat points and sharing in a
small number of mission points for a net positive result.

[TANKS] Re: Transmission teaser

2012-09-17 Thread Mike Lyons
Not necessarily reduction in both parts.

Those 72-tooth sprockets (that look like circular saw blades) give a ratio
of 1:6.545.
They were the largest I could find for #25 chain.

The pulleys I can fit on the front and middle shafts would allow as low as
1:9.164 and as high as 1:3.273.

As you can see I used every inch of available space inside the hull and
then a little more.

For my first installation I am using the nominal rated speed of the motors
and aiming for scale replication of the actual top speed. I'll drop it
down if it makes traverse aiming too twitchy.
