[RE-wrenches] Tile Roof mount compliance

2014-11-21 Thread Nick Vida
Hi William,
We deal with this all day in California. You should go in the attic, figure out
the truss type (howe, scissor...), get the spans and sizes of the wood, and
pictures of the grade stamps. You can then send this off to a structural
engineer to get a letter and a digitally stamped set of your plan set. The
Engineer may request structural additions, or different spacing for the
penetrations, but most truss is pretty sturdy and capable of supporting the
solar panels.
If you throw a rock on linkedin, you will hit a Structural Engineer. If you
need some help, send me a note off list.

[RE-wrenches] We lost a wrench- Will Korthof

2014-10-10 Thread Nick Vida
Hi Wrenches,

Some of you knew Will Korthof from the list, the greater solar community, or
the EV world. Unfortunately we lost him last weekend. He was great. Such a
great Solar Engineer. Such a passionate green being. So bright. EV driver for a
decade, vegan, neat guy. I spent the first 3-1/2 years of my solar career
working with him, and I learned a lot. Sorry to bring this to your attention,
but I thought some of you might like to know.I have funeral details if you
would like them. It is on Monday in Los Angeles.

Sorry to be off topic, but most of what I know about solar came from Will, and
I believe many of you have had great conversations on here with him.

[RE-wrenches] Suggestions for off grid cellular modem

2014-10-08 Thread Nick Vida
Hello wrenches,
I am looking for a recommendation for a cellular modem for a monitoring system.
Ideally it would be 24vdc, and outdoor rated or robust enough to survive in a
junction box. Cellular coverage is good at the site, but there are no phone
lines or data. Do any of you have any experience with this?
Application is SMA tripower monitoring.
Thanks in advance.

[RE-wrenches] walkways installed on solar racking

2014-04-01 Thread Nick Vida
Hello Wrenches,

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with
installing working platforms or catwalks over solar rails. The application
would be a standing seam roof not suitable to walk on. We are trying to find a
way to install a mechanical system while also providing a walking surface. Any
ideas or notable products?

[RE-wrenches] Barcode scanners

If you are looking for a cheapo one that will work for input fields over usb,
you can get them at any office store.

If you are looking for a pda solution for in the field, i would check out some

But my money in on a total jedi solution being looking into accessories for the

[RE-wrenches] EMT in attic

2012-11-08 Thread Nick Vida
Hi Wrenches,

Thanks for you comments. Fun for the day is hearing they want to apply section
230 about service conductors and say that flex is not a metallic raceway
because it is no good for bonding. They are defining the pv source circuits as
a service.
I am getting a distinct Wiles vibe here.

I find it so annoying when they try to put out these distinctions with no code,
no city ordinance and not even an internal memo, especially when they remain
obstinate without going to the trouble to actually legitimize
the interpretation.

Dan- are the output circuits necessarily DC? I would have to look at NEC for a
minute, but it doesn't seem to add up to me right now.

Thanks,

[RE-wrenches] EMT in attic

2012-11-03 Thread Nick Vida
Hello wrenches,

wondering if any of you are running into inspectors wanting EMT in the attics,
or allowing flex only if there is a fusible disconnect on the roof. We have
heard this a few time lately and havent yet seen a code reference, (except
690.31e saying metal raceways are fine- not specifying EMT only). I am
wondering if this is a new wave of inspectors wanting the future now as
informed by an expert seminar, or if there is something I am not aware of. Any
comments are very appreciated.

Thank you,

[RE-wrenches] Transformerless inverters

2012-04-22 Thread Nick Vida
LADWP is requiring inverters to apply for articles of certification though
their engineers. Several transformerless inverters are approved, others have
not supplied the required schematics.
I wouldnt worry about the over the counter for LADBS. The plan check is not
routine enough for these systems to be over the counter yet. Once they become
routine, and the engineers understand the code enough, they will develop a
check list, and by and by train the inspectors enough to switch to express
permits.

[RE-wrenches] solar accumulation panel

2012-03-09 Thread Nick Vida
Hello,

I was wondering if any of you wise wrenches know if 'solar accumulation panel'
is still the name proposed to be used in the NEC. I think I remember Bill
Brooks mentioning that they couldn't get it in for 2011, but that it will
probably be good for 2014. I was wondering because here in Los Angeles they are
revising the standard plan and they have an unusual name for the device, so as
it is still a draft, I would us like to align with the future, if at all
possible.

Thanks wrenches!

thanks for the code reference for the solar accumulation panel bus rating. It

[RE-wrenches] TOU EV charger service equipment question

2012-01-09 Thread Nick Vida
Hello Wrenches,

Hope you are well.

I was wondering if any of you have come across any new and interesting ways of
dealing with EV Time of Use scenarios. Some utilities will require/ allow a
second meter for the EV only, and it seems like more work and more expensive
gear than it could be to do a second service/ second meter-main/ or duplex
meter. I was wondering if any of you had noticed vendors with more residential
appropriate load centers with 2 meter sockets, or what approach in general you
are taking in dealing with the requirements. I happen to have one coming up
which coincides with a service upgrade anyway, but pricing out a duplex setup
is slightly intimidating, and not that compact for layout. Any thoughts or
leads would be interesting, and I hope some of the manufactures
are addressing this soon to be popular scenario.

[RE-wrenches] Fronius IG+ and 300.34

2011-11-03 Thread Nick Vida
Although I am a fan of the IG+, and truly loving not finding space for 2
inverters, I was having a hard time with the AC wiring
on my 11.4 today. I realized on the door that "only 4awg..." can be used for
the AC wiring, 'unless the conductors are up-sized for voltage drop'. Actually
landing those 4awg in there was a chore to say the least. 300.34 occurred to me
and I took out the tape measure and found the 4awg to be 5/16", multiplying by
8 gave me 2.5" maximum bending radius. The IG+ wiring section is 2" from the
bottom of the terminal to the bottom of the disconnect. Adding the length of
the conductor that lands in the terminal makes for some
serious dexterous labor, especially all the way in the back of the disconnect.
Hopefully in the future the wiring section will become easier in that regard.

No folding strands!

[RE-wrenches] Low-power consuming LEDs

2011-10-26 Thread Nick Vida
http://www.digikey.com/

is always a great place to start, especially for small quantity purchases or
testing. same with the following:
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/category/340/LEDs/1.html

another good place to go is the following event with a free entry for the
exhibition:
http://www.strategiesinlight.com/index.html

you can probably look through the exhibitors to find some contacts.

Although it doesn't really apply directly, as the focus is not components, one
must always mention LDI if the topic of lighting and LED conferences comes up,
although i think you missed it this year.

[RE-wrenches] UL PV certification?

2011-07-20 Thread Nick Vida
http://solarprofessional.com/resources/training/details/?TrainerID=1259

Have any of you wrenches noticed the UL certification for PV installer?
Anyone take the test? I wonder 2 things, is it a solar puzzle test like NABCEP,
and is there a legit experience well above 2 installs for c-10s?

It would be pretty great if they prepared you for some finer engineering
knowledge of solar equipment, and electonics of the engineered components of
the
solar components, however it seems like it might be a pretty simple trades
knowledge cert from the description.

clue me in if you would wrenches.

[RE-wrenches] how would you measure a partial short circuit

2011-07-01 Thread Nick Vida
Thanks Bill and Bob,

once again I know more about what I do because of you guys.

Bob, thanks for he tip about the ammeter. I havent done too much
experimentation

data I collect before I move any fuses.

Hopefully I will be back at that house and be able to figure out what was wrong
and let you wrenches know for interest's sake.

[RE-wrenches] how would you measure a partial short circuit

2011-07-01 Thread Nick Vida
Hi Bob,

thanks for thinking about my question!

I landed the fuses and put the fuses back in (not it- typo) on my sma
disconnect, and there was an arc across the fuse holder. Seems like it could
have been closing a short circuit on the bus once the parallel connection was
made.

Hi Bill,

Although I am not entirely sure there is no ground fault,
I took the conductors off the terminals so they were in free air, and measured
pos to neg, pos to ground, neg to ground on both strings, and all I saw was the
taper towards 0 from about 20 vdc, and no steady voltage anywhere but pos to
negative. That makes me think the voltage is in a short circuit somewhere.
I cant yet make any conclusions about the wiring mistake because I had no
access
to the pull box where the different parts of the strings were connected to each
other and to the home run. I do think there might be a short circuit between
strings because when the fuse went back in there was an arc on the fuse holder
as if there was a short circuit instead of a simple parallel connection. I
guess
it might have had to do with the 2 different voltages, but there is voltage
'missing' somewhere.

Thanks for thinking about my question.

Bob,

re: inverter capacitors charging, I havent seen that much of an arc with SMA
disconnects, and the switch was in the off position, so I dont think there was
any signal path to any real electronics. I always pull my fuses and do not
replace them until everything is landed and hot and the voltages look proper
when I install, and this arc was way out of range of normal.

re: backfeeding, I just suspected that too while thinking about your responses,
and yes the 2 voltages were different by about 200 volts.

Thanks for the thoughts Bob.___

[RE-wrenches] how would you measure a partial short circuit

2011-06-30 Thread Nick Vida
Hi wrenches.

I had an interesting case today that I have been thinking about since it
happened. I dont have all the details because the homeownter had to leave
before
I was done with the service call, but here is what I do know. SB5000 with 2
strings of 15 modules. String one was 437 vdc, and string 2 was 247vdc. I
decided to look for a ground fault, and I turned off the inverter. I measured
for ground faults and found no evidence of anything wrong in that regard. As
the
homeowner was out of time and wanted me to go, I re-landed the wires in the dc
disco, and when I replaced the fuses, I noticed a minor arc when one of the
fuses was going it. Although I had no time to measure it, I think that there
might be a partial short circuit, possibly with one complete string and some
panels of the other string, and the remaining panels on the second string. My
mind was racing with how I could have measured for a partial short circuit
without seeing it as an arch. I can imagine such a thing on a bigger system
being a dramatic electrical event.

needless to say, I cant wait to get back there and go through the signal path
properly and find out what the electrician did. And of course i realized that
replacing the fuses in such a questionable situation was probably not the best
idea.
Do any of you have any thoughts on how one would measure for such a thing?

[RE-wrenches] Fronius IG vs IG Plus inverters

2011-06-28 Thread Nick Vida
I foresee some more failures in the IG plus, the details of which I will not
share here, but you can ask me off-list if you like. I will say that the IG
plus
has a trifling bracket design with rectangle holes that is not really strong
enough to hold the inverter up on its own, and does not lend itself well to a
perfect mating of the 2 sections of the inverter. If you think you would like
to
lag up a stud on the middle row, the bracket will deform, causing you to add
more anchors just to hold the thing up in the corners. And if you miss a pilot
hole by a 1/4 inch or whatever, and you decide to try and drill out the hole to
give you some play, go to your vise, cause the rectangle holes will put your
un-sprained wrists in jeopardy. The plus has a way better dc terminal, but you
need to get fuses, and the ac terminal is the same horrible white plastic one
from the IG.
Also, there are removable vent clean outs on the right side of the IG plus, so
it is difficult to leave access in some cases, and you might have to remove the
power stage to clean them if you run a pipe there.

Hey wrenches,

super fun to do, especially when you have some context with the folks, Vendor

killer: Christmas lights.

Above is my biggest PV rig on a pretty immense sculpture I was on the design

[RE-wrenches] John Wiles

2011-04-20 Thread Nick Vida
I have definitely learned a lot form reading Wiles, but I have to agree with
William Miller. In a sidebar at the session of his I attended, he explained
that
he teaches the inspectors things that he has tried and failed to get into the
NEC. He said that if the inspectors enforce the above the code suggestions he
has presented as code, then the general practices might be adopted, and by and
by, will become code, and his idea which was rejected by the NEC jury will
prevail and he will win.
Every time a new wave of inspectors go through his program, the less
knowledgeable ones take notes on Wiles' suggestions and somehow absorb his
general attitude, and you have to start at ground zero with entitled
discussions
that cannot be supported by present or imminent NEC. This is not a scholarly.
If
you want to disagree, you can look back at his "Code corner" in home power and
find over and over articles about topics that were never in the code. People
with lesser knowledge are misguided by Wiles' lack of integrity as a scholar. I
am all for continued output of good knowledge and explanations of better
practices to the PV community, but I think Wile's should step aside, and I cant
help but wonder if the job is in peril because of his massive seminar fees.

[RE-wrenches] Two Buildings, Two Services, One Roof

2011-04-18 Thread Nick Vida
It seems like it should be fine if you run one conduit to your shop inverter,
and another to a dc disconnect and underground to the house inverter, but I see
you running a bonding wire for the 2 GECs as well for some reason. You should
go
through the part of 250 about different GEC for separate building, which has
some optional installation options, and you could likely use that to justify
running the equipment ground back to the house.

I have some pretty decent expectations for that 80 watts going pretty far. So
far as the compressor they use, who knows!

[RE-wrenches] NABCEP test

2011-04-01 Thread Nick Vida
my favorite part of the test was sitting for an ultra detailed exam that
expected you to have certain things memorized that no engineer or electrician
does't use resources for (like voltage drop, lag bolt ratings, and the rest)
and
getting the letter with the test location with the wrong address on it!

I was sent to:
810 n. Poinsettia Santa Ana 92647

when the actual address was:
810 n. Poinsettia St. Santa Ana 92701

Imagine my surprise when I drove 40 miles to a city I barley know for a test
you
can't take if you are late, and I arrive in a sub-division!
And yes, having a St, Rd or Ln is a big part of finding the place, as well as
the correct zipcode!

Nick I agree, but what really got me was all the "most safe" questions. I am
glad that it is hard, however, because now that a c-10 can take it after 2
installs I think it is pretty hard to really expect too much respect. That
being
said, combined with my 6 years of installing, it is a nice additional
credential.

[RE-wrenches] unisolar and enphase?

2011-03-12 Thread Nick Vida
Hi wrenches,

I have an interesting situation of a intentional living community with a
donated
old commercial roof section with 4 unisolar pv-144 laminated on top.
They want to get the thing grid tied on a budget and I am trying to sort out
how. On the one hand, a power one aurora pvi- 2000 makes sense because the
additional input wattage can be used on the other chanel if more panels show
up,
but of course the price is a burden. I was wondering if an enphase would work
at
all. Do any of you know if the power will attenuate if overloaded for a limited
time at solar noon, or will it wreck the inverter. (that would be in a parallel
string of 2).

I know it is not a great situation array wise, or return on investment, but I
would like to sort something out for them.

thanks,

[RE-wrenches] TED MONITORING

2010-05-21 Thread Nick Vida
I would say on TED, which i have a limited exposure to, that they need to do
some real work on their documentation because it took me a long time to find
their "firmware" update for mac installation, among others, and wow, providing
a 3 inch cd rom which is un-usable on most computers instead of your standard 6
inch CD is problematic to say the least. Also, it seems they are getting a lot
of tech calls and the guy i deal with hung up on me when I said I was
installing on a mac, and took a quite abrupt attitude in the next call for the
whole session, which didnt make me feel like it is a very professional solution.
It is also problematic in my opinion to have that type of communication on a
piece of gear that is likely right by a computer, which will have a power strip
full of switching power supplies.
so those are minor gripes which i hope they hear about, but what is pretty
major, and I havent found any confirmation of this, is that the rumor mill told
me that their CTs lost their UL listing. Has anyone else heard that, or am I
wrong?

[RE-wrenches] Learning about the grid resources

2010-05-05 Thread Nick Vida
Hi wrenches,

I am starting to study the grid and how it works, gear involved, voltages,
transformers, maintenance...and whatever else I can learn. I was wondering if
any of you have any suggestions for resources for my reading list, or web
pages/ magazines you keep current with.

thanks,

[RE-wrenches] xantrex xw experiment

2010-03-30 Thread Nick Vida
Hi wrenches,

I am looking at the xantrexXW system with 2 inverters, and I asked their tech
support if it is possible to have 2 inverters synced to the same grid and
backup power, but without being parraled on the battery bank. My hope was that
the 2 inverters could switch between master and slave based on state of charge
for 2 separate battery banks, with 2 separate charge controllers. The backup
would be a generator, and could be 2 differentgennies, one on each system, or
perhaps one generator on a 2 inverter grid. I know it is a lot more inverter
than what is probably needed, but i would really like to have 2 separate banks
to avoid weaker cell issues.
do you wrenches have any thoughts on this little dream? and no, xw cannot sync
the frequency without being on the same battery bank with one master and one
slave in parallel according to what I was told.

[RE-wrenches] PV Powered vs SMA

2009-12-02 Thread Nick Vida
Yes I know the failures you were mentioning in 05-06.

I had one that had 2 blown 20a ac midget fuses inside the cover. i was told by
the service of their partner company at that time to replace the fuses- it
might have been a grid surge that took out the fuses.

i did so later that day and the inverter started and counted down. I heard the
click, a very short interval of their very annoying operating tone, and then
BOOM lika an M80 firecracker was inside the inverter.

I was so thankful that I had decided to put the cover back on the unit in the
time while I was waiting for the countdown.

truly humbling like only electricians can understand.

[RE-wrenches] "its a UL listed assembly"

2009-11-22 Thread Nick Vida
Thanks for a great response Matt, and an interesting lead to a product
solution...

Let me preface this with saying I am installing another company's design, so
all you are saying about proper
gear at the service is totally heard, and this tap would not be something I
would design...

The situation is a Wadsworth tandem 100amp main. Really rare and weird panel
from the early 60s. It has
2 service entrance masts, and a 8 jaw meter socket feeding 2 separate fused
100 amp load centers.

The design was to tap into one of these with 40amp fused disconnect from a sma
7000.

Unfortunately the wires in the Wadsworth gear is type TW which is not included
in the Feeder exception of
310.16. When this was discussed. I threw out there the idea of changing the
wires. These guys wanted to
void the listing for piercing taps and any other taps

The REAL problem is the wording of NEC 690.64(B) because all these guys that
are not willing to wrap
their head around what the signal path/ back feeding/ over-current/ 230
tapping scenarios are... read 120
and wants to apply it to everything in the system. These inspectors were
explaining to me that the feeder IS
the buss and 120%... and its really hard to explain the intent with the
language of the paragraph. It needs to
be 2 separately described scenarios in my opinion, to avoid the constant
misunderstanding.

Also, the NEC says in 690.64 and the 230 reference there, that taps are
permitted for solar... not much
 detail, not much help.

It seems like these inspectors consider the "voiding the UL listing" is a dead
wall conversation ender. I'm
almost willing to admit you are right, it is totally valid, which makes the
point of .64 come into question.

I hope you are right about newer gear having listed tapping means and large
buses for solar. It seems like
that will take a while to filter down because so many people work with
electricians different than the solar
installers they are working with (and because so many installers focus on
solar and don't wire houses). I
think the glimmer of hope that a tap will pass on a retrofit is gonna keep
them around for some time. And I
really think that the code needs to address the options better.

looks like someone involved here is buying a service upgrade. surprise!

[RE-wrenches] "its a UL listed assembly"

2009-11-20 Thread Nick Vida
wow wrenches,

fun solar day for me. Another supply side tap nightmare.

Have any of you ran into a situation where the AHJ will not let you upgrade the
feeders from the meter to the
main breaker because it "voids the UL listing"? In this case I had 1 AWG
feeding a 100 amp main, but it was
type TW which is not on the feeder exception 310.16. In running into the
typical daftness on 690.64 I asked
if I could replace the 1 AWG TW with Type THHN so the feeder chart would apply
and there would be 150
ampacity wires feeding the 100 amp main. No luck, all frustration.

Any wrenches have any thoughts on this?

[RE-wrenches] Enphase track record

2009-11-07 Thread Nick Vida

I
That's interesting Drake, about the accessible groups.
Are there clearance issues for thermal concerns or anything?
It sounds like you could run your dc wires up the rows and have
all your inverters grouped on the top rail. That a one man call to
trouble shoot a system which has been a big concern from many voices
all along. Maybe those guys can offer several whip lengths or something...
i don't know I haven't worked with the gear yet.

nick vida

I'm also concerned about the issues brought up here. I have two
possible projects that would benefit from Enphase due to the fact
that the modules will go on more than one roof, with significantly
different orientations. In one case, there are shading issues as well.

Supposedly the Enphase units are selling fast. Someone must be
installing them. They have been out long enough that there must be
some data as to whether or not the units are surviving. The long
term will not be known until the inverters have been out for many
years, however if they are having issues in the short term, then we
know they have issues.

One idea that Enphase tech support said was acceptable was to mount
the inverters in accessible groups. The DC leads would need to be
extended, and some loss would occur. Also the inverters can be
mounted in vented attics. Having the inverters in a group in an
accessible attic would make maintenance easier than tearing apart an
array to get to a dead inverter.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase track record

2009-11-07 Thread Nick Vida
I put a temperature probe under the modules almost every job, and it is always
drastically lower than the module itself. A frying module at 130 might have an
ambient temperature underneath in its shade of 89 degrees. the specifics are
always surprisingly low relative to touching the panel and how your face feels
up there.

Nick

Can anyone think of a more brutal environment for a piece of electronic
equipment than under a solar module which day in and day out experiences the
elements and temperatures of 130+ plus F?

Despite any so-called accelerated life-cycle testing and estimated mean time
to failure probabilities, nothing takes the place of actual time cooking
under solar arrays.

Having seen my fair share of controller and inverter manufacturers come and
go out of business in 30+ years in the RE field, I'll be watching with great
interest the great Enphase experiment unfold.

And ever heard of the word "recall"? Swapping a central inverter or two is
one thing. Imagine doing it with the X number of microinverters you
installed six months or two years ago...

But hey, other than my Eeyore-sounding words above, aren't Enphase inverters
so cool with all that they can do?

marco in Hawaii

A while back there was a discussion about the reliability of Enphase
inverters. As I understand, they have been selling like hot cakes, so a lot
must be installed. Some sort of track record must be emerging.

Has the promised reliability of these inverters been met? Can they be
connected to a rail, under a large array without worry that the unit will
need to be dug out and replaced? Should the inverters be located in an
attic or other accessible location.

Thanks,

its cool technology, they have a mesh on the top of the panels instead of
traditional solder lines. This reduces resistance so they get better
efficiency. They also flash test each panel so you can sort the for mismatch

what level (all the way to foundry? i dont know). They said they are looking

[RE-wrenches] REC modules

2009-10-26 Thread Nick Vida
Drake,

REC are pretty good id say.
They are big, like Sharp big. A bit of a challenge to layout on a roof.
They have a removable back on the junction box and there are 3 diodes i
believe. Everything in there looks like its fastened by compression, which
might be why they had that recall on the previous model line. The frames are
low profile, and I noticed that the corners are crimped together, not screwed
together like some of the other panels. I wonder how that will last in the long
run, and in certain climates (any wrenches with experience with this type of
frame fastening?) One thing I didn't like is the glass shifts around in the
frame when you lift the panels over your head, but they are secure and the
frame is sturdy. There are no additional cross braces like some of the other
panels that size. Voltage and current are similar to many other modules.
I am impressed by the proactive recall of their previous model they sold in
2008 because they were willing to take a loss for their good standing and
respectable reputation.
Not the smallest or most efficient out there, but good for the price if they
fit, and you are probably buying their silicon when you buy other panels
because REC group is one of the largest producers in the world.

[RE-wrenches] pull box in solar raceway

2009-10-23 Thread Nick Vida
With certain designs where you have the service between the array and the
inverter, you may be compelled to make a common raceway to a pull box and
divert a conduit to the service from there. The conduit between the pull box
and the inverter would then have your ac wires and dc wires running to the
inverter and branching at the pull box.

Would the GFDI still operate properly if you bond your system ground from the
inverter with the equipment ground from the array in the pull box, or would
that pathway to the grounding system in the service from the roof not allow the
inverter to detect a ground fault properly?

If there is a difference to the inverter, how would bonding the raceways affect
the ground path? (If you are bonded at all fittings roof to the inverter, then
the conduit from pull box to grounding system would be a path that could also
circumvent the inverter.)

[RE-wrenches] Rooftop wiring methods between multiple subarrays

2009-10-14 Thread Nick Vida
Max,

I'm with Bill Brooks, among others on this one.
You are risking more than you might want to realize by bonding with mini
(hanger) straps. Without an excelent path to ground through you equipment
ground touching all frames on your array, you are risking static charge that
can attract lightning. Also, your negative conductor is bonded to ground in
your inverter, and if that is a better path to ground than your mini straps,
then the lightning current might want to pursue that path and totally fry your
system. You can find an interesting report by arco on a lightning study shared
here on the list by mr. joel davidson of los angeles.
my choice is to run emt with connectors and ground bushings and run ground wire
through the emt. I personally like to put only a connector and a plastic
bushing on the other side because that stick is bonded, but that is maybe
arguing against an article 250 code reference. I dont worry about running bare
copper through the emt unless it is 6 awg or greater, and i would need to grab
the NEC, but i think that is the cutoff (however i have never considered
galvanic incompatibility before this thread).
it is great that you are seeing eye to eye with your AHJ, but i would rethink
that one.

[RE-wrenches] ocean side gear performance/ life cycle

2009-09-28 Thread Nick Vida
hello wrenches,

i was wondering what you sea side, marine, and tropical installers have found
to be great modules and materials in ocean adjacent installations. I was
wondering about what decreases in life cycles one can expect, how tedlar holds
up, RHW/ cable tray issues, what frame issues might arise in storms... and of
course about general corrosion.

i am also wondering about how typical racking and standoff materials work out
and last- for corrosion and storm loads.

also, how does emt/ rigid/ seal tight conduit fair?

i saw a couple of things in archives about checking that your galv and
stainless are of a high grade for hardware, which was interesting.

any thoughts friends?

maybe build a jig on the roof to hang plumb bobs so you know exactly where the
frame is, then after the lathing is done, drill through to the sticks, and lag
bolt into the frame while also epoxying into the stone, and use some pretty
hefty bolts. Then you can use some short standoffs. If thats not enough for

hello wrenches.

I was wondering if any of you have any data on what the losses would be if you

instance, string of 11 with 8 facing 180 south at 30 degrees, and 3 facing
south 180 at 45 degrees. I have heard that the voltages and currents would
differ and the IV curve would be inefficient as a string, but I dont know how
much of a loss would be expected.

2009-08-02 Thread Nick Vida
Dick,

I think im in William's camp and you may have gathered from my earlier post in
this thread. The actual logic and safety concerned in reality and practice may
be totally true and valid from your perspective (and in reality), however the
wording of the code allows for you to get a out of the blue expensive
correction. it is really to obscure in trying to describe 2 senarios in one
sentence and i know form a hell week that i had last week that if you run into
ahj not being satisfied, you have some heat on your shoulders. I agree in
theory that the feeder would always be unable to really be overloaded with the
overcurrent protection there at the main breaker, only the bussing in the
sub-panel is a concern. its just that the code is so well worded for daftness.

[RE-wrenches] down-sizing main breaker

2009-07-31 Thread Nick Vida
if you read 690.64b it does mention both the buss rating AND conductors.

for years and years I thought it was just for the buss rating until i got
called recently for the feeders being undersized and unable to accommodate the
solar within 120%. I see a lot of sentiments in this thread that it is only for
busing, and I would really like to discover a reference to that. Someone told
me something about the difference of having main lugs and main breakers in the
sub panel... i am looking into it.

>From the literal of 690.64 it would seem that if you are fed with #4 than you
>are stuck with 120% of 100a regardless of the sub panel rating.

[RE-wrenches] Watt-hour meter

2009-07-28 Thread Nick Vida

you can wire a 4 jaw meter for 120 by lifting that little clip on the back of
the meter and using the left side top for line and left bottom for load, but i
think you need to do a high resistance neutral attached to the screw that holds
the jumper.

you might want to look through old grid tied battery backup stuff for this
because there are a lot of 120 inverters in that genre, the installers of
which, may have had to sort out a performance meter for.

you could get 2 auto transformers and use a regular performance meter in a
socket to keep things simple but overdone.

[RE-wrenches] myers hub

2009-07-25 Thread Nick Vida
here is one i came across drake, look on the second page for "ground hub" or
"ground nut":

http://www.crouse-hinds.com/catalog/pdfs/00267to00270.pdf

i think most companies have this option, its just a matter of getting your
supply house to order it from the manufacturer they work with.

[RE-wrenches] myers hub

2009-07-24 Thread Nick Vida
guys,

on myers hubs... are these even rated for emt connectors?
i know that a lot of inspectors look for them, and a lot of electricians use
them, but i just went through several
manufacturers cut sheets and they only say for rigid and imc. nothing is said
about emt or emt fittings. In fact they
are tapered to accommodate rigid pipe, which we all know makes it tough to
close the gap with emt connectors.
It makes me think that one should use a water tight gasketed fitting and a
bonding bushing for these situations.
I guess the question is if these emt connectors qualify for 250.92(B)(2).

i still cant imagine using anything else coming into the top of a metal
enclosure...

[RE-wrenches] myers hub

2009-07-24 Thread Nick Vida
hey August,

Yes we are saying the same thing, i was talking about a bonding bushing.
The reason I said bonding screw is because the myer hub i use in that scenario
only has a screw on it not a lug. The point was to mention that you need
to bond your conduits together so there is no interruption from the pvc box.

Drake,

look ask about the other options for myers hubs at your supply house,
because you can buy them with a bonding screw on the lock nut side.

nick

Hi Nick,

Don't you need to install a bonding bushing with an equipment jumper to bond
all conduits together regardless of whether you're using a Meyers hub or not
in a non-metallic enclosure? I might be misunderstanding you, but I don't
see how a bonding screw will do any good in a non-metallic enclosure.

yes you need a myers hub for the same above the bottom 1/3 and into the top
for your non-metalic enclousure. some will use a water tight connector
(raintight with a gasket ring). Either way you need a bonding bushing on
your connector or a myers hub with the bonding screw on the inside locknut
to bond together all the conduits coming into the enclosure.
i would suggest a hole saw definitely if you are working with fiberglass
combiner box and also for a pvc box because a unibit makes a cloud you dont
want around you in fiberglass and makes a beveled hole in a pvc box that can
make a seal difficult if your not careful.

[RE-wrenches] REC Solar melt-down

2009-06-30 Thread Nick Vida
wrenches,

the defect in REC panels is the frame expands past the panel and can contract
and break the glass. Unfortunate, but no big deal in a lot of ways. I dont know
if there is another defect, but that one would warrant a recall instead of
replacing a lot of panels. There was also an article about their Oregon plant
breaking a couple hours after it went online. Im glad to see they have done a
recal. I think it is proper and good business. I think thier silicon and wafers
are fine and well made, and we would hopefully find out if they werent because
they are a major supplier of wafers to several manufactures.

[RE-wrenches] fronius IG Plus practical engineering WAA???

2009-06-20 Thread Nick Vida
hey Wrenches.

I opened my soon to be installed fronius IG Plus to see what was going on in
there, and found myself a bit disappointed. There is a 6 string combiner in
there which is fine, however there is no bypass for the fusing section and the
terminals are rated at 20 amps. In a situation where you have 6 strings, you
cannont combine on the roof and run down with a pair of conductors, instead you
must run down with your strings. This means instead of running 3/4 conduit for
8awg pair and ground, I would have to run 1" conduit for 6 pairs of 10 awg and
ground.
(thats a lot of flex for a 2x4!!) So if I need a disconect on the roof, I
would need 2 disconects, and correct me if im wrong-- but i would need 4
disconects in the future because this is a transformerless inverter.
I also noticed that they are still using those mediocre white plastic terminals
for the ac connection that so many people found annoying.
And fyi, there are no fuses in the fusing section, so dont forget to order them.

I hear Vermont, Mass, New Hampshire, and Colorado

here in southern California I have heard of no problems

any other areas anybody knows of?

is it the cold weather?

[RE-wrenches] Santa Monica guidlines/ CEC

2009-04-22 Thread Nick Vida
Wrenches,

This is an interesting email i received today from an inspector in Santa
Monica, CA. He reference the CEC, and I am not familiar. Is this the Canadian
Electrical Code(CEC)?

Also,
Santa Monica, CA just published their guidelines and there is a link in the
email. They are pretty close to the one Bil Brooks worked on for
Schwarzenegger.

Here is the Email (my draft of my response follows):

Hi Nick

It is my understanding that your permit will be extended by 6 months.

Here is the short cut for the SM PV standards.

Shortcut to:
http://www.qcode.us/codes/santamonica/index.php?topic=8-8_40

Weather and sunlight resistant stickers are acceptable.

The following correction items are in commonly overlooked.
* The PV source and PV output circuits can not be contained in the
same raceways per 690.4(B).
* A newer and commonly missed requirement is the identification of
conductors of different systems. The conductors of the DC are required
to be identified differently per 2007 CEC 310.12, 215.12, 210.5(C) and
200.6. The 2007 CEC is based on the 2005 NEC.
* Please download the CalOSHA requirements for the installation of
ladders. Inspectors will not climb ladders that are not compliant with
the requirements. Please be prepared to install a suitable ladder,
inspectors may not be permitted adequate time to wait for the
installation of various ladders.

my response draft is:

Nick-

The following correction items are in commonly overlooked.
> * The PV source and PV output circuits can not be contained in the
> same raceways per 690.4(B).

the rest of the sentence you are referencing is:

"as feeder or branch circuits of other systems..."

The clarification note in the handbook is:

For example, 690.4(B) does not permit the conductors supplying an exterior
lighting fixture located in close proximity of a roof- mounted PV array to be
installed in the same raceway or cable with the conductors of PV source
circuits or PV output circuits.
Conductores directly related to a specific PV system, such as those in dc and
ac output power circuits, may be contained in the same raceway as PV source and
output conductors... (page 1020 2005 NEC Handbook)

We would only be running the solar circuits in our raceways connecting
different runs to our gear. Are you saying you have a concern about such a
raceway?

Nick Vida

Re: [RE-wrenches] California solar intiatives

On prop 10,

yes you may feel whatever way you would like about Pickens. Seeing how
much windy land he owns in texas and that he owns clean energy natural gas
stations makes it a bit insipid that he is trying to use the government to
increase his infrastructure. But as a tradesman, if you dont think natural
gas is a important way to run your fleet of heavy vehicles now and in the
future, then i dont understand that. You can run CNG right now, in fact I
do and have for years. It is effective and lower emissions (isnt that part
of what your business is? environmentalism?) I have seen one work van that
runs on batteries in europe that has a low range and a long charge time.
The reality of our business and all the other tradesman is driving up to
200 miles a day and driving around often. You can do what you are doing
now, (buying gas until the battery van comes out never joel?), run a
neighborhood business, or use natural gas. And if you do already, then you
welcome an increase in the infrastructure and can only hope they will use
garbage and cow poop to reach increasing demand instead of imports. And of
course, when the sales fleet and customers are all going around in EVs,
you are right Joel, this state will have officially pulled its head out of
its natural pocket.
