[RE-wrenches] Tile Roof mount compliance
Hi William, We deal with this all day in California. You should go in the attic, figure out the truss type (howe, scissor...), get the spans and sizes of the wood, and pictures of the grade stamps. You can then send this off to a structural engineer to get a letter and a digitally stamped set of your plan set. The Engineer may request structural additions, or different spacing for the penetrations, but most truss is pretty sturdy and capable of supporting the solar panels. If you throw a rock on linkedin, you will hit a Structural Engineer. If you need some help, send me a note off list. [RE-wrenches] We lost a wrench- Will Korthof
Hi Wrenches, Some of you knew Will Korthof from the list, the greater solar community, or the EV world. Unfortunately we lost him last weekend. He was great. Such a great Solar Engineer. Such a passionate green being. So bright. EV driver for a decade, vegan, neat guy. I spent the first 3-1/2 years of my solar career working with him, and I learned a lot. Sorry to bring this to your attention, but I thought some of you might like to know.I have funeral details if you would like them. It is on Monday in Los Angeles. Sorry to be off topic, but most of what I know about solar came from Will, and I believe many of you have had great conversations on here with him. [RE-wrenches] EMT in attic
Hi Wrenches, Thanks for you comments. Fun for the day is hearing they want to apply section 230 about service conductors and say that flex is not a metallic raceway because it is no good for bonding. They are defining the pv source circuits as a service. I am getting a distinct Wiles vibe here. I find it so annoying when they try to put out these distinctions with no code, no city ordinance and not even an internal memo, especially when they remain obstinate without going to the trouble to actually legitimize the interpretation. Dan- are the output circuits necessarily DC? I would have to look at NEC for a minute, but it doesn't seem to add up to me right now. I was wondering if any of you had noticed vendors with more residential appropriate load centers with 2 meter sockets, or what approach in general you are taking in dealing with the requirements. [RE-wrenches] Fronius IG+ and 300.34
Although I am a fan of the IG+, and truly loving not finding space for 2 inverters, I was having a hard time with the AC wiring on my 11.4 today. I realized on the door that "only 4awg..." can be used for the AC wiring, 'unless the conductors are up-sized for voltage drop'. Actually landing those 4awg in there was a chore to say the least. 300.34 occurred to me and I took out the tape measure and found the 4awg to be 5/16", multiplying by 8 gave me 2.5" maximum bending radius. The IG+ wiring section is 2" from the bottom of the terminal to the bottom of the disconnect. Adding the length of the conductor that lands in the terminal makes for some serious dexterous labor, especially all the way in the back of the disconnect. Hopefully in the future the wiring section will become easier in that regard. No folding strands! [RE-wrenches] how would you measure a partial short circuit
Hi Bob, thanks for thinking about my question! I landed the fuses and put the fuses back in (not it- typo) on my sma disconnect, and there was an arc across the fuse holder. Seems like it could have been closing a short circuit on the bus once the parallel connection was made. Hi Bill, Although I am not entirely sure there is no ground fault, I took the conductors off the terminals so they were in free air, and measured pos to neg, pos to ground, neg to ground on both strings, and all I saw was the taper towards 0 from about 20 vdc, and no steady voltage anywhere but pos to negative. That makes me think the voltage is in a short circuit somewhere. I cant yet make any conclusions about the wiring mistake because I had no access to the pull box where the different parts of the strings were connected to each other and to the home run. I do think there might be a short circuit between strings because when the fuse went back in there was an arc on the fuse holder as if there was a short circuit instead of a simple parallel connection. I guess it might have had to do with the 2 different voltages, but there is voltage 'missing' somewhere. Thanks for thinking about my question. Bob, re: inverter capacitors charging, I havent seen that much of an arc with SMA disconnects, and the switch was in the off position, so I dont think there was any signal path to any real electronics. I always pull my fuses and do not replace them until everything is landed and hot and the voltages look proper when I install, and this arc was way out of range of normal. re: backfeeding, I just suspected that too while thinking about your responses, and yes the 2 voltages were different by about 200 volts. [RE-wrenches] how would you measure a partial short circuit
Hi wrenches. I had an interesting case today that I have been thinking about since it happened. I dont have all the details because the homeownter had to leave before I was done with the service call, but here is what I do know. SB5000 with 2 strings of 15 modules. String one was 437 vdc, and string 2 was 247vdc. I decided to look for a ground fault, and I turned off the inverter. I measured for ground faults and found no evidence of anything wrong in that regard. As the homeowner was out of time and wanted me to go, I re-landed the wires in the dc disco, and when I replaced the fuses, I noticed a minor arc when one of the fuses was going it. Although I had no time to measure it, I think that there might be a partial short circuit, possibly with one complete string and some panels of the other string, and the remaining panels on the second string. My mind was racing with how I could have measured for a partial short circuit without seeing it as an arch. I can imagine such a thing on a bigger system being a dramatic electrical event. needless to say, I cant wait to get back there and go through the signal path properly and find out what the electrician did. And of course i realized that replacing the fuses in such a questionable situation was probably not the best idea. Do any of you have any thoughts on how one would measure for such a thing? nick vida___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
[RE-wrenches] Fronius IG vs IG Plus inverters
I foresee some more failures in the IG plus, the details of which I will not share here, but you can ask me off-list if you like. I will say that the IG plus has a trifling bracket design with rectangle holes that is not really strong enough to hold the inverter up on its own, and does not lend itself well to a perfect mating of the 2 sections of the inverter. If you think you would like to lag up a stud on the middle row, the bracket will deform, causing you to add more anchors just to hold the thing up in the corners. And if you miss a pilot hole by a 1/4 inch or whatever, and you decide to try and drill out the hole to give you some play, go to your vise, cause the rectangle holes will put your un-sprained wrists in jeopardy. The plus has a way better dc terminal, but you need to get fuses, and the ac terminal is the same horrible white plastic one from the IG. Also, there are removable vent clean outs on the right side of the IG plus, so it is difficult to leave access in some cases, and you might have to remove the power stage to clean them if you run a pipe there. nick vida Brighter Days ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org

[RE-wrenches] John Wiles
I have definitely learned a lot form reading Wiles, but I have to agree with William Miller. In a sidebar at the session of his I attended, he explained that he teaches the inspectors things that he has tried and failed to get into the NEC. He said that if the inspectors enforce the above the code suggestions he has presented as code, then the general practices might be adopted, and by and by, will become code, and his idea which was rejected by the NEC jury will prevail and he will win. Every time a new wave of inspectors go through his program, the less knowledgeable ones take notes on Wiles' suggestions and somehow absorb his general attitude, and you have to start at ground zero with entitled discussions that cannot be supported by present or imminent NEC. This is not a scholarly. If you want to disagree, you can look back at his "Code corner" in home power and find over and over articles about topics that were never in the code. People with lesser knowledge are misguided by Wiles' lack of integrity as a scholar. I am all for continued output of good knowledge and explanations of better practices to the PV community, but I think Wile's should step aside, and I cant help but wonder if the job is in peril because of his massive seminar fees. nick vida ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org

I would say on TED, which i have a limited exposure to, that they need to do some real work on their documentation because it took me a long time to find their "firmware" update for mac installation, among others, and wow, providing a 3 inch cd rom which is un-usable on most computers instead of your standard 6 inch CD is problematic to say the least. Also, it seems they are getting a lot of tech calls and the guy i deal with hung up on me when I said I was installing on a mac, and took a quite abrupt attitude in the next call for the whole session, which didnt make me feel like it is a very professional solution. It is also problematic in my opinion to have that type of communication on a piece of gear that is likely right by a computer, which will have a power strip full of switching power supplies. so those are minor gripes which i hope they hear about, but what is pretty major, and I havent found any confirmation of this, is that the rumor mill told me that their CTs lost their UL listing. The backup would be a generator, and could be 2 differentgennies, one on each system, or perhaps one generator on a 2 inverter grid. [RE-wrenches] "its a UL listed assembly"
Thanks for a great response Matt, and an interesting lead to a product solution... Let me preface this with saying I am installing another company's design, so all you are saying about proper gear at the service is totally heard, and this tap would not be something I would design... The situation is a Wadsworth tandem 100amp main. Really rare and weird panel from the early 60s. It has 2 service entrance masts, and a 8 jaw meter socket feeding 2 separate fused 100 amp load centers. The design was to tap into one of these with 40amp fused disconnect from a sma 7000. Unfortunately the wires in the Wadsworth gear is type TW which is not included in the Feeder exception of 310.16. When this was discussed. I threw out there the idea of changing the wires. These guys wanted to void the listing for piercing taps and any other taps The REAL problem is the wording of NEC 690.64(B) because all these guys that are not willing to wrap their head around what the signal path/ back feeding/ over-current/ 230 tapping scenarios are... read 120 and wants to apply it to everything in the system. These inspectors were explaining to me that the feeder IS the buss and 120%... and its really hard to explain the intent with the language of the paragraph. It needs to be 2 separately described scenarios in my opinion, to avoid the constant misunderstanding. Also, the NEC says in 690.64 and the 230 reference there, that taps are permitted for solar... not much detail, not much help. It seems like these inspectors consider the "voiding the UL listing" is a dead wall conversation ender. I'm almost willing to admit you are right, it is totally valid, which makes the point of .64 come into question. I hope you are right about newer gear having listed tapping means and large buses for solar. It seems like that will take a while to filter down because so many people work with electricians different than the solar installers they are working with (and because so many installers focus on solar and don't wire houses). I think the glimmer of hope that a tap will pass on a retrofit is gonna keep them around for some time. And I really think that the code needs to address the options better. looks like someone involved here is buying a service upgrade. surprise! ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
[RE-wrenches] "its a UL listed assembly"
wow wrenches, fun solar day for me. Another supply side tap nightmare. Have any of you ran into a situation where the AHJ will not let you upgrade the feeders from the meter to the main breaker because it "voids the UL listing"? In this case I had 1 AWG feeding a 100 amp main, but it was type TW which is not on the feeder exception 310.16. In running into the typical daftness on 690.64 I asked if I could replace the 1 AWG TW with Type THHN so the feeder chart would apply and there would be 150 ampacity wires feeding the 100 amp main. [RE-wrenches] Enphase track record
I That's interesting Drake, about the accessible groups. Are there clearance issues for thermal concerns or anything? It sounds like you could run your dc wires up the rows and have all your inverters grouped on the top rail. That a one man call to trouble shoot a system which has been a big concern from many voices all along. Maybe those guys can offer several whip lengths or something... i don't know I haven't worked with the gear yet. nick vida I'm also concerned about the issues brought up here. I have two possible projects that would benefit from Enphase due to the fact that the modules will go on more than one roof, with significantly different orientations. In one case, there are shading issues as well. Supposedly the Enphase units are selling fast. Someone must be installing them. They have been out long enough that there must be some data as to whether or not the units are surviving. The long term will not be known until the inverters have been out for many years, however if they are having issues in the short term, then we know they have issues. One idea that Enphase tech support said was acceptable was to mount the inverters in accessible groups. The DC leads would need to be extended, and some loss would occur. Also the inverters can be mounted in vented attics. Having the inverters in a group in an accessible attic would make maintenance easier than tearing apart an array to get to a dead inverter. ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
[RE-wrenches] Enphase track record
I put a temperature probe under the modules almost every job, and it is always drastically lower than the module itself. A frying module at 130 might have an ambient temperature underneath in its shade of 89 degrees. the specifics are always surprisingly low relative to touching the panel and how your face feels up there. Nick Can anyone think of a more brutal environment for a piece of electronic equipment than under a solar module which day in and day out experiences the elements and temperatures of 130+ plus F? Despite any so-called accelerated life-cycle testing and estimated mean time to failure probabilities, nothing takes the place of actual time cooking under solar arrays. Having seen my fair share of controller and inverter manufacturers come and go out of business in 30+ years in the RE field, I'll be watching with great interest the great Enphase experiment unfold. And ever heard of the word "recall"? Swapping a central inverter or two is one thing. Imagine doing it with the X number of microinverters you installed six months or two years ago... But hey, other than my Eeyore-sounding words above, aren't Enphase inverters so cool with all that they can do? marco in Hawaii A while back there was a discussion about the reliability of Enphase inverters. As I understand, they have been selling like hot cakes, so a lot must be installed. Some sort of track record must be emerging. Has the promised reliability of these inverters been met? Can they be connected to a rail, under a large array without worry that the unit will need to be dug out and replaced? Should the inverters be located in an attic or other accessible location. they are here at solar power. its cool technology, they have a mesh on the top of the panels instead of traditional solder lines. This reduces resistance so they get better efficiency. [RE-wrenches] REC modules
Drake, REC are pretty good id say. They are big, like Sharp big. A bit of a challenge to layout on a roof. They have a removable back on the junction box and there are 3 diodes i believe. Everything in there looks like its fastened by compression, which might be why they had that recall on the previous model line. The frames are low profile, and I noticed that the corners are crimped together, not screwed together like some of the other panels. I wonder how that will last in the long run, and in certain climates (any wrenches with experience with this type of frame fastening?) One thing I didn't like is the glass shifts around in the frame when you lift the panels over your head, but they are secure and the frame is sturdy. There are no additional cross braces like some of the other panels that size. Voltage and current are similar to many other modules. I am impressed by the proactive recall of their previous model they sold in 2008 because they were willing to take a loss for their good standing and respectable reputation. Not the smallest or most efficient out there, but good for the price if they fit, and you are probably buying their silicon when you buy other panels because REC group is one of the largest producers in the world. ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
[RE-wrenches] pull box in solar raceway
With certain designs where you have the service between the array and the inverter, you may be compelled to make a common raceway to a pull box and divert a conduit to the service from there. The conduit between the pull box and the inverter would then have your ac wires and dc wires running to the inverter and branching at the pull box. Would the GFDI still operate properly if you bond your system ground from the inverter with the equipment ground from the array in the pull box, or would that pathway to the grounding system in the service from the roof not allow the inverter to detect a ground fault properly? If there is a difference to the inverter, how would bonding the raceways affect the ground path? (If you are bonded at all fittings roof to the inverter, then the conduit from pull box to grounding system would be a path that could also circumvent the inverter.) ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
[RE-wrenches] Rooftop wiring methods between multiple subarrays
Max, I'm with Bill Brooks, among others on this one. You are risking more than you might want to realize by bonding with mini (hanger) straps. Without an excelent path to ground through you equipment ground touching all frames on your array, you are risking static charge that can attract lightning. Also, your negative conductor is bonded to ground in your inverter, and if that is a better path to ground than your mini straps, then the lightning current might want to pursue that path and totally fry your system. You can find an interesting report by arco on a lightning study shared here on the list by mr. joel davidson of los angeles. my choice is to run emt with connectors and ground bushings and run ground wire through the emt. I personally like to put only a connector and a plastic bushing on the other side because that stick is bonded, but that is maybe arguing against an article 250 code reference. I dont worry about running bare copper through the emt unless it is 6 awg or greater, and i would need to grab the NEC, but i think that is the cutoff (however i have never considered galvanic incompatibility before this thread). it is great that you are seeing eye to eye with your AHJ, but i would rethink that one. nick vida ___ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org

Dick, I think im in William's camp and you may have gathered from my earlier post in this thread. The actual logic and safety concerned in reality and practice may be totally true and valid from your perspective (and in reality), however the wording of the code allows for you to get a out of the blue expensive correction. it is really to obscure in trying to describe 2 senarios in one sentence and i know form a hell week that i had last week that if you run into ahj not being satisfied, you have some heat on your shoulders. [RE-wrenches] fronius IG Plus practical engineering WAA???
hey Wrenches. I opened my soon to be installed fronius IG Plus to see what was going on in there, and found myself a bit disappointed. There is a 6 string combiner in there which is fine, however there is no bypass for the fusing section and the terminals are rated at 20 amps. In a situation where you have 6 strings, you cannont combine on the roof and run down with a pair of conductors, instead you must run down with your strings. This means instead of running 3/4 conduit for 8awg pair and ground, I would have to run 1" conduit for 6 pairs of 10 awg and ground. (thats a lot of flex for a 2x4!!) So if I need a disconect on the roof, I would need 2 disconects, and correct me if im wrong-- but i would need 4 disconects in the future because this is a transformerless inverter. I also noticed that they are still using those mediocre white plastic terminals for the ac connection that so many people found annoying. The clarification note in the handbook is: For example, 690.4(B) does not permit the conductors supplying an exterior lighting fixture located in close proximity of a roof- mounted PV array to be installed in the same raceway or cable with the conductors of PV source circuits or PV output circuits. Conductores directly related to a specific PV system, such as those in dc and ac output power circuits, may be contained in the same raceway as PV source and output conductors... (page 1020 2005 NEC Handbook) We would only be running the solar circuits in our raceways connecting different runs to our gear. Are you saying you have a concern about such a raceway? Re: [RE-wrenches] California solar intiatives
On prop 10, yes you may feel whatever way you would like about Pickens. Seeing how much windy land he owns in texas and that he owns clean energy natural gas stations makes it a bit insipid that he is trying to use the government to increase his infrastructure. But as a tradesman, if you dont think natural gas is a important way to run your fleet of heavy vehicles now and in the future, then i dont understand that. You can run CNG right now, in fact I do and have for years. It is effective and lower emissions (isnt that part of what your business is? environmentalism?) I have seen one work van that runs on batteries in europe that has a low range and a long charge time. The reality of our business and all the other tradesman is driving up to 200 miles a day and driving around often. You can do what you are doing now, (buying gas until the battery van comes out never joel?), run a neighborhood business, or use natural gas. And if you do already, then you welcome an increase in the infrastructure and can only hope they will use garbage and cow poop to reach increasing demand instead of imports. And of course, when the sales fleet and customers are all going around in EVs, you are right Joel, this state will have officially pulled its head out of its natural pocket. > Hello Jay, > > CalSEIA (and I) am opposed to Prop 7 because, among other things, it would > exclude renewable projects that are 30MW or less from counting toward the > State's Renewable Portfolio Standard.
