Sendmail - Domain masquerading

2003-03-14 Thread Michael Mansour
Hi,

I've just setup and migrated my mail from sendmail V8
to sendmail V10.

I used to successfully use the:

DMmydomain.com.au

to mask my hostname with just the mydomain.com.au for
outgoing emails under V8 without any problems. Under
V10 this option no longer works.

I'm using this under Red Hat 8.0 and use Webmin 1.0.7
to configure my sendmail environment.

Any ideas to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Michael.

Gotta be careful here the DWL-650 works great; the DWL-650 + doesn't
work at all, they improved it don'tcha know.

Actually the new one has an unsupported chipset.

Hi, Douglas. I got it working last night after some hints from Tony. Here is my
working version:

- begin script

#!/bin/bash
#
# Notify the admin if a directory's contents has changed.
#

# The directory to monitor.
watchdir='/var/spool/voice/incoming'
#watchdir='/home/jb/Mail/incoming/jbinpg'
#watchdir='/tmp'

# Who gets notified of changes. This may be a
# comma-delimited list, but no spaces.
recipient='[EMAIL PROTECTED]'

# The file that holds an md5sum of the directory
# listing, as of the last time it was changed.
sumfile='/home/jb/sumfile'

## End of settings ##

## Now we compare old sumfile of watchdir to new sumfile and if different ##
## overwrite old with new ##

# Get the previous md5sum of the directory listing.
#olddirsum=`cat $sumfile`
olddirsum=$(cat $sumfile)

# Get the current md5sum of the directory listing. Use the
# --full-time option to avoid errors based on ls changing the
# displayed date format based on the age of the file.
#newdirsum=`ls --full-time $watchdir | md5sum`
newdirsum=$(ls --full-time $watchdir | md5sum)

# Compare the previous md5sum to the current md5sum.
if [ "$newdirsum" != "$olddirsum" ]; then

# Get the process ID and scriptname and use them to
# generate a tempfile name. This method is not guaranteed
# unique, but it should be Good Enough.
pid=$$
scriptname=$(basename $0)
mailfile=/tmp/$scriptname.mailfile.$pid

# Check each file in $watchdir to see if it was created or changed
# since the last md5sum was generated.
for file in $(ls $watchdir); do
   if [ $file -nt $sumfile ]; then
 ls --full-time $file >> $mailfile
 ## Now mail a notification message to the recipients list ##
 mail -s 'New voicemail message detected' $recipient < $mailfile
 ## then delete mailfile
 rm $mailfile
   fi
  done
fi

# Finally, update the summary file with the current md5sum.
echo "$newdirsum" > "$sumfile"

-- end script --

I have it monitoring my dump directory for my voicemail app, VOCP (shameless plug:
awesomely useful set of perl apps at http://www.vocpsystems.com). Naturally, it can
be tailored to watch anything you want.

If you are having trouble, I would suggest commenting out the "rm $mailfile" until you
know it is being written.

Or this one:

which will install and make the fonts available via XFT.

OK, it's my project, I'm a little biased. ;)

Seriously though, the webFonts.sh script pointed to from the link above
only adds the fonts to the font servers path. It does nothing about
setting the fonts up using fontconfig/XFT

So now I can authenticate via the Full Name of the user. How do I change
that to username/logon name?

As was already pointed out, 'LANG="C" acroread' should work.
You could also try the packages available here:

They seem to work well, including the acroread browser plugin.

serial port quickie

2003-03-14 Thread Steve Borho
I'm trying to read a stream of bytes coming into an RS-232 port.

I've read the setserial, stty, and termios man pages and thought I had
it all figured out. The device is outputting 19200 8N1. I use
setserial to set the baud rate, then use stty to disable hardware flow
control.

Now, when I cat /dev/ttyS1, I get a series of binary '0e00 0e00'
instead of the '1fff 2fff' which I should be seeing. If I unplug the
device and plug into a windows box running hyperterm, the data shows
up like it's supposed to.

I even went so far as to write a C program which used tcsetattr to
set the baud rate and flow control settings, then read the bytes, but
the results were the same.

Can anyone tell me what step I'm missing?

the drivers from nvidia. Those are a bit of a pain, but once they're
installed they seem to work very well, at least on my GeForce2.

check your SCSI cable. sometimes such errors are caused by a bad cable
(e.g. using a standard cable instead of a LVD cable for devices that
require LVD). Also check the termination of the SCSI chain maybe a
terminator is bad. I've had similar messages when either the cable
or the terminator did not support LVD, the drive would work fine for
a while, then it would usually start coughing up errors(DLT8000)

HELP!!! server problems

2003-03-14 Thread Simpson, Doug
I have a compaq server that is running rh 7.3 and connected to a specter
logix tape library and a sony ait 50 gig tape drive. My NetVault
software says the tape drive is not longer on line. I reboot and it
appears that all is fine and then I get a scrolling error on my screen.
Below is the /var/log/messages file. It appears to be hardware but is
it possible that it is something else. It was working and then I redid
the server and the only difference between then and now is the
"PowerSchute software from APC. PLEASE ANY HELP would be great.

I just noticed this. You said you had installed pcmcia-cs-3.2.4, but the
message above seems to indicate otherwise:
Linux Kernel Card Services 3.1.22

Did the stock kernel-pcmcia-cs packages not work for you?

How did you determine
PCIC="yenta_socket"
Most of the info I've seen for Toshiba laptops seems to indicate
PCIC=i82365 is correct.

I didn't find any info for your specific model, but others use i82365:

2520CDS
http://www.apsoftware.it/~cris/pcmcia.html

Most of the info available here:
http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/

Seems to indicate the same thing.

Hope that helps,

Probably two kernels for different CPU architectures.

Run

rpm -q kernel --qf "kernel-%{version}-%{release} is for %{arch}\n"

to find out.

Caveat: You could uninstall both packages at once with
"rpm --erase --allmatches kernel", BUT since you don't have
a newer or different kernel installed, you would be without a
kernel. My recommendation would be to install a new kernel first,
then remove the two old kernels.

Above bit refers to settings in /etc/vsftpd.conf as documented in
"man vsftpd.conf". I don't know how you configured vsftpd without
reading the manual. My answer above makes sense if you read this
mail from top to bottom. It explains that two configuration options
default to values that would ensure that uploads could not be
downloaded. However, it is your responsibility to verify that you
haven't changed these settings in vsftpd's config file.

Hi all,

I don't know if this is really an off-topic since festival is packed

Does somebody has experience using festival to generate a .WAV file from
a plain text?

*any* experiences about this will be highly appreciated. :-)

Have a nice weekend!

Re: Apache2 + mod_auth_ldap

2003-03-14 Thread Daniel Brad Holder
What is webmin?

Here is the part of httpd.conf concerning the ldap authentication:

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride none
order allow, deny
AuthName "KEEP OUT!"
AuthType Basic
LDAP_Server www.mydomain.com
LDAP_Port 389
Bind_DN "cn=administrator, cn=Users, dc=MyDomain, dc=com"
Bind_Pass "heh"
UID_Attr uid
require valid-user

I think it binds to the ldap server correctly as I don't get a bind error
in error_log but I'm not sure how to set up the actual authentication
part. Any pointers?

There's an RHCE Exam Cram book by Kara Pritchard. It's a little out of
date in it's coverage (often the case with printed study guides), but does
exactly what you want: gives you an overview of the test process, and some
guidance about passing.

The problem is that the Red Hat-isms change from version to version. That
might not matter too much on the hands-on, depending on what the task is,
but Red Hat has been known to shift packages and config files between
versions, so learning *how* to problem solve is probably a better strategy
than learning how to solve a particular problem.

Personally, I'd recommend taking the LPI exams instead. They have a little
less prominence, but they don't expire the way the RHCE does, they cost
less, and they're vendor-neutral. You can pass LPI by being familiar with
Linux in general, and not have to learn all the -isms for a given distro
(other than RPM and APT package management).

Personally, I refuse to pay almost $800 as a single pass/fail unit. If
your employer is paying, then give it a whirl; if you fail, you'll know
what you need to study for the next time. But if you're paying out of your
own pocket, I'd steer clear of RHCE and go for an LPIC instead.

Ypgrate to Grub from lilo

2003-03-14 Thread Yanick Quirion
Hi all,

I'm using Redhat with lilo as boot loader. I read some stuff about grub and
I'm very interested to install it. What are the steps to migrate from lilo
to grub without problem? Also, is it simple to add another kernel into grub
as it in lilo? The lilo file is very simple to understand, but the grub.conf
seems more complex.

If you have any hints/tricks that will be good for me.

Thanks all

RPM problem

2003-03-14 Thread Jacky Li
Hi there,

When I tried to run a rpm --rebuild to rebuild the database. It seems
like it just hangs and doing anything. I am suspecting a corrupt database.
When I use the package program under X, it hangs at the point of looking at
the headers. Now the rpm cron jobs are backup up:

root 1388 1259 0 Mar13 tty2 00:00:00
/usr/lib/rpm/rpmd --rebuilddb
root 3749 3471 0 04:02 ?00:00:00 /bin/sh /etc/cron.daily/rpm
root 3751 3749 0 04:02 ?00:00:00
/usr/lib/rpm/rpmq -q --all --qf

The command rpm -qa and rpm -qf seems fine. The problem occured when someone
accidentally delete a directory contained some
installed RPM packages. I try to rpm -e package-names. I killed that
process because it was taking too long. Anyone know what may
be the problem and how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Depending on what you need to do, this isn't an issue. Most of the

Apache 2.0 is still bleeding-edge, especially with support for things
like PHP. Many modules haven't even been ported to 2.0 yet.

Sendmail is up to 8.11 in the AS2.1 updates directory. There's nothing
wrong with this as a stable mailer - in fact, we're at 8.11.6 on our
production SMTP servers at work, and they're still running 6.2. The
darn thing just works and works and works.

I would expect to see new features and versions in the 3.0 release.
Things like Apache 2.0, Python 2.2, etc. should be more stable by then
and suitable for a production rollout.

All that said, ES/AS are perfectly positioned for many production server
applications *today*. They're built on stable technologies and
versions and have had security patches applied. I, for one, am not
going to be upgrading a dozen servers at work every year since it's
actually cheaper for me to run ES and patch it than it is to spend the
time doing OS upgrades.

Like all products from all vendors, your mileage will vary. What's
appropriate for me may not be appropriate for you.

2003-03-14 Thread Douglas, Stuart
Tony (et al),

Thanks...haven't tried your additional config yet, still working with the first setup.
I'm hitting a wall trying to get the mail to actually send. The md5sum is working
correctly (updating with changes), but I never get any e-mail. Ideas?

Thx!

Stuart

Help! Mozilla 1.3 screws up arial.

After downloading files from

I was getting lockups for awhile on shutdown like you. Matrox adviced me to
*not* use DRI with Xinerama. I don't know if it has to do with Xinerama itself
or the beta, v0.21, Matrox Parhelia drivers.

The rumor mill says that new Matrox drivers may be released Today. Don't know
for sure but I am pretty sure they will be out within the next couple of weeks.
 Hopefully, Today!

ES is *NOT* 8.1. AS really is the former AS. ES is essentially AS
without the clustering pieces. WS is the workstation install of AS/ES
but has most of the server components removed.
.. which is still based on Red Hat 7.2. With 8.1 well on it's way, the
technology is nearing 1.5 years dated. According to a CNET story, Enterprise
(AS/ES/WS) 3.0 is scheduled to be released later this year. I'm curious as
to whether it will be an Bluecurve/8.x derivitive, or still based on 7.x
architecture (2.1 is based on RH 7.2). Reason for the curiosity is because
Red Hat stated that anything certified (i.e. Oracle, etc.) to run on one
version will run on another. Phoebe testers all discovered that they changed
a threading model which broke alot of legacy apps (w/o passing the kernel
env. variable first), but opened the doors for improvements in future
applications. Would such changes be implemented in the Enterprise model?

I would expect that most businesses will want to go to ES for their
typical mail and DNS servers and is what I'll be doing with my 10+
Linux systems at work (currently running from 6.1 to 7.3). A few
enterprises will want the clustering pieces and put AS in the mix.
Those who are rolling out production Linux desktops may want AW.
I don't think I'd want to deploy Production Desktop Linux systems based on
AW until it adopts the more IMHO user friendly Bluecurve theme. I find 8.x
to be far more beginner friendly than any 7.x distro.

And as for production servers, I tend to prefer the more leading (but not
bleeding) edge versions (Sendmail 8.12, Apache 2.x, etc.) largely for their
improved feature set. You won't find that immediately in the Enterprise
versions.

If 3.0 is more 8.x like, I think I'd consider deploying it. Until then, I'll
stick with my once per year upgrading. Kickstart makes that simple enough
anyway, especially if you maintain similar hardware across your network.

Heh... YEAH Personally, I dont really care for either one...

No real reason why I would prefer Gnome... I just do... its all about

hope that adds fuel to the fire...

As for practice exams, Caleb is again correct. Hands on is the ONLY way
to pass. The RHCE is not a "memorize a bunch of stuff and take a big
multiple choice exam" kind of exam. There IS a multiple choice part to
it, BUT that is a rather small part, as the majority of the exam, and
subsequently the only way to pass the exam, is to know what you are

Well,
Maybe you do pretend too much from Wine. You cannot run some really
heavvy apps like oultlookXP. You could berely run Office 6 wich is still
a good compromise but very lite in respect the XP suite. I recall I was
running Office 6 on Solaris 2.0 with an earlier version of wine (three
years ago).

Hope it helps.

This would probably be the same as running pretty much any Win App on a

I'm using RH 8.0, Wine is set to load by default. How hard is it, or is
it even possible to install things like OutlookXP (2003) or other
Windows apps? I mean, I know it's supposed to be possible with Wine, but
how practical is it?

Thanks! :)

acroread seems to have problems with redhat internationalisation,
specifying LANG=C enviroment variable lets it run ok for me.

You need to be 100% sure that myuser can't download from the incoming
directory or he'll be able to turn your server into a pirate site. You
also need to be 100% sure he can't change permissions on the incoming
and outgoing directory - by default, users can change permissions on
their own files.

Directory Services setup

2003-03-14 Thread Jason M. Kuhlman
Hello list
I am interested in kind of mimicking windows Active Directory. I am
interested in isolating/securing several parent/child domains, but need to
set up a few trusted domains. From the research I have been doing I think
that if I run samba and LDAP I can get pretty close. Or am I barking up the
wrong tree? Or is there any software out there that will allow directory
services for mostly win clients with Linux domain controllers?

You need to be 100% sure that myuser can't download from the incoming
directory or he'll be able to turn your server into a pirate site. You
also need to be 100% sure he can't change permissions on the incoming
and outgoing directory - by default, users can change permissions on
their own files.

Re: FTP

Here's a brief overview:
1. Create the accounts chroot'ed and restrict the shell to ftponly.
 /usr/sbin/groupadd -g $NEWUID $NEWUSER
 /usr/sbin/groupadd -g $NEWFTPGID $NEWFTPGRPNAME /usr/sbin/useradd -d $NEWDIR/./pub -g
$NEWUID -G ftp$NEWUSER -M -s
/usr/local/bin/ftponly -u $NEWUID $NEWUSER

In our case, a typical home directory would /cust/foo/./pub. wu-ftpd
will end up enforcing those. ftponly is destributed with wu-ftpd. We
create all the customer accounts with a gid>1.

2. Create /cust/foo/pub/upload and /cust/foo/pub/download.

3. Create /cust/foo/etc, /cust/foo/bin, /cust/foo/lib. These contain
everything the user needs to run and *must* be present. Remember, these
accounts are chroot'ed so they do not have access to /bin, /usr/bin,
etc.

4. Add some good stuff to /etc/ftpaccess. You must read the
documentation on this since there are lots of ways you can get it wrong.
Here are some key entries in mine:
guestgroup %1-1
upload /cust/*/* * no
upload /cust/*/* /pub/upload yes * * 2770
noretrieve /cust/*/bin
noretrieve /cust/*/etc
noretrieve /cust/*/lib
noretrieve relative /pub/upload
path-filter guest /etc/pathmsg ^[-A-Za-z0-9_\.]*$ ^\. ^-

There are entries in ftpaccess that restrict whether or not you want
your users to be able to rename and delete files or not.

NOTE: there is a Guest HOWTO at http://www.wu-ftpd.org. Read it.
Memorize it. Your system security depends on you getting your setup
right. Never allow a user to download a file that's been uploaded
unless you manually move it first. If you do, then you've just turned
your server into a potential pirate site.

In recent versions of wu-ftpd, there are nicer ways to chroot an account
than the /./ construct and that will eliminate the requirement for the
bin, lib, and etc directories. Use them if you can since it will save
you a bit of hassle in the long run (like having 500 copies of tar in
your file system that all need to be updated to fix a security hole).

Cheers,
.../Ed

Thanks to Steven and a lot of digging I have this working 99% - the only
problem is it seems that about every other time I logout, the system
hangs and I have to hit the reset button - once that gets fixed it'll
all be working. :)

Here's what I did:

Followed the instructions given at

And my XF86Config file looks like:

RE: a question about shell script

2003-03-14 Thread Terry Hobart
You can use the shift example below to get rid of the first parameter. Then
at that point the $# will give you the number of parameters left. Then you
can loop thru the remaining parameters $1, $2, ... to the second to last one
$# - 1. That should give you what you want.

I am no script expert. I just got the idea from a book I bought (recommended
on this list). "Portable Shell Programming" by Bruce Blin. It is a good and
easy read with plenty of explained examples.

Good luck

RE: FTP

2003-03-14 Thread Richard Humphrey
Well not sure if this is the best way to do it but here is what I did.
Please enlighten me if what I did is incorrect or poses some security flaws.
First I created a user , lets call him myuser with no shell access
I pointed his home directory to /var/ftp/myuser ( I created the myuser dir
first)
I then added myuser to vsftpd.chroot_list so he only has access to
/var/ftp/myuser
I changed group for myuser to be ftp
I left owner as root
Inside /var/ftp/myuser I created the following directories: incoming and
outgoing
For the incoming directory I allowed write access by changing owner to
myuser
For the outgoing directory I only allowed read access.

Now this does what I want it to do, but I am not sure how "secure" this is.

up2date: copying authentication information from one system to another

2003-03-14 Thread Ed Wilts
I'm trying to add a system not under my control to my RHN account -
we've got an extra subscription and one of our remote offices would like
to use it. What I'd like to do is give the remote office the encrypted
username/password information so that they can run up2date but not have
access to any of my current system information via the web. Is this
do-able? The username seems to be in /etc/sysconfig/rhn/systemid but
the password doesn't seem to be there. There's a long checksum string,
but that's not constant between the systems I've already got registered
on the same account.

Any ideas for how to approach this?

Thanks,

Hi people.

I just bought RH8 Personal. I have two computers, one of which I'd like to install it on:
1. P4, 1.8Ghz, 256 MB, 30GB hd, onboard audio & video (Intel Extreme Video, shared memory). This computer is pretty new. Has WinXP Home on it.
2. P3 600Mhz, 384MB, 20GB hd, GeForce3 Ti200 64 MB, onboard audio. This computer is about 3 years old, has Win98SE on it.
I would rather install to the P4, is the onboard video going to give me a problems with Xfree/86?

Problem implementing quotas

2003-03-14 Thread Patricia Castañeda
I`m having problems with the activation of quotas. I need to have active
quotas on filesystems /var ( users spool mail) and /home (users home
directorys), but when execute convertquota says that I have old format
(I supose that convertquota is for that), and quotacheck says that don`t
exists the file quotas (don´t create it, I understand that quotacheck
create the quota.user or aquota.user).

I have RedHat 8.0, kernel 2.4.18-14smp and quota-3.06-5. I installed
from RPMs.
The filesystems are ext2.

Thanks.

FTP

2003-03-14 Thread Richard Humphrey
I am currently working on setting up our company FTP server. What we are
looking for is to set it up with a specified username/password that only our
distributors have access to. I would like to create 2 directories. The first
one would be a directory that would allow them to upload files (need write
access) and another directory that is read-only. My server is running RH 8
and uses vsftpd. I have read various ways of setting this up, but I am new
to Linux and don't really understand which is the best way. Is it best to
create a user and just have them access the home directory? I want
to allow them to upload, but not rename or delete any of the directories
etc. How should I go about this? I know there are similar posts in here
about vsftp but not sure how they apply to my situation.

I did try creating a second line but it failed when trying to rebuild the

try some more things.

Possibility #1: You did something wrong; I remember this working well.

Possibility #2: Instead of commenting out the DAEMON_OPTIONS line, leave
the one for localhost intact and create a second line for eth0. Don't
remember the exact format, but someone told me this worked.

All hearsay, but pretty decent hearsay at least.

RE: Recover Raid 5 of Red Hat 7.3

2003-03-14 Thread Hong Tian
In Raid 5, if one of disks is failure, the system can still work
continually. Then how do I know which disk is failure? By hardware Raid 5, I
can replace the bad disk by plug in a new good disk. How about software Raid
5 in Red Hat 7.3? Could I just plug in the spare and the system will rebuilt
the data from the parity bits from the other disks automatically? What are
the commands to process it? Where can I find the documentation about
recovering software Raid 5 on Red Hat 7.3? Thanks a lot.

The idea of RAID-5 is to survive this. Assuming you've only lost one disk
then you should be able to plug in the spare and they system should
rebuilt the data from the paratiy bits on the other disks.

SV: problem with KPPP shortcut on desktop (and prompting for root password)

2003-03-14 Thread Marie-Thérèse Lorentzen
You are right, the "case case" was not the problem.
Andrew Rokicki from the Redhat Install list found the solution to the
problem. I'll copy his solution for anyone else who might have run into the
same problem.

On Thu, 2003-03-13 at 20:47, Rokicki, Andrew wrote:

Yes it did!! :)

And for anyone who might have run into the problem of KPPP prompting user
for root password, the solution (which also came from Andrew Rokicki) is the
following:

Follow these instructions:
http://kb.redhat.com/view.php?eid=29

This is from redhat:
There are two ways to the keep kppp from asking for a root password. They
are:
1. Change the following line in the file /etc/pam.d/kppp from:
#auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so
to:
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_permit.so
2) Edit the file /etc/pam.d/kppp and change the word rootok to permit.

KPPP is now working without any problems.

The 'mount' command doesn't automatically recognize vfat or msdos
filesytems, but does ext2; see:

 man mount

But, if you have an /etc/filesystems file, 'mount' will read the
filesystem types listed from there and "try" to correctly decipher if
what you're trying to mount is one of those.
It seems to work well enough on my RH 7.0 machine.
   My /etc/filesystems file:

  ext2
  nodev proc
  nodev devpts
  iso9660
  vfat
  hfs

Check out the documentation for details.

   Best,

   Tom

AW: Can't send email with RH 8.0, sendmail-8.12.8-1.80 (standardconfig)

2003-03-14 Thread Daniel Paul
Yes, I am sure that NO sendmail daemon is running on the other
server. And inetd/xinetd isn't even started, so it can definitely
not call the sendmail program.

By the way, when /etc/init.d/sendmail is executed, it starts TWO
programs: sendmail and sm-client. What is the second one? Maybe
this is the problem? Someone at RedHat.com must know this, I think,
so if someone reads it...

Now I want to summarize a working and a NOT working environment
(just for those who asked me about it):

The following config is working:
(OurLocalDomain.de is our local (not internet) domain with
192.168.1.x addresses)

RedHat 7.1, sendmail-8.11.6, daemon not running, sendmail.mc reads
as follows (and is of course compiled that way):

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')
dnl FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')dnl
dnl FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX')dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl
CwOurLocalDomain.de

access reads as follows (standard, I think):

localhost.localdomain RELAY
localhost RELAY
127.0.0.1 RELAY

All other files (virtusertable, domaintable, local-host-names,
mailertable) are empty.

Again: this config is working properly, I can send email to
local and (as there is an alias root -> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in aliases) send email to our real mail exchanging server.

Now the following config is NOT working:

RedHat 8.0, sendmail-8.12.8, daemon not running, sendmail.mc/cf
as follows (I changed it like the one above and recompiled):

I have included everything which is not like the above redhat 7.1
config.

define(`confTRUSTED_USER', `smmsp')dnl
define(`confTO_IDENT', `0')dnl
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl
LOCAL_DOMAIN(`localhost.localdomain')dnl
dnl FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains')dnl
dnl FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX')dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl
MAILER(procmail)dnl
CwOurLocalDomain.de

Access is the same as on the 7.1 box, all other files are
also empty.

Bye

Daniel

I can't speak of behalf of redhat, but personally I don't see how programs
like cronjobs, mail, etc... could send an e-mail without an MTA running (at
least listening) on the box.

Are you sure your previous RH systems were not configured to have sendmail
run under xinetd instead of as a daemon???

In your case, if "/etc/init.d/xinetd restart" or "service xinetd
restart" fails to start xinetd, you got to check the log file for an
error message. If xinetd starts with "[ OK ]", but the enabled
service can't be connected to, I would also take a look at the log
file, but additionally verify whether xinetd is listening on the
desired port (with netstat or socklist or ...).

Config ids are the alpha-numerical alias names for a numerical port
number as found in /etc/services. In the following, "swat" is a
config id and at the same time tells xinetd to listen on port
901/tcp:

  service swat
  {
  # ...
  }

Obviously, xinetd can't run distinct services on the same port.
That's why these config ids must be unique. You can't have more than
one xinetd config file for service "swat". It would complain in the
log file.

The second case where xinetd would refuse to start a service is when
you tell it explicitly to bind more than one service to the same
address/port. For instance:

# /etc/xinetd.d/service1
service pop3
{
port = 110
# ...
}

# /etc/xinetd.d/service2
service pop2
{
port = 110
# POP2 would normally be port 109.
# ...
}

This would be a mistake, because it could not run two services on
port 110. It would refuse to enable either one and complain in the
log file.

You have already occupied too many primary and extended partitions
in your partition table. You cannot create a new one. And those
sectors are outside the only extended partition. Your mistake upon
initial partitioning was to create too many primary partitions. I
would have partitioned like this:

  /dev/hda1 - primary (FAT32)
  /dev/hda2 - extended
/dev/hda5 - logical (Linux)
/dev/hda6 - logical (Linux)
/dev/hda7 - logical (Linux swap)
