IP Chains Squid Transparent Proxy Woes

2001-02-10 Thread Kevin Diffily
Title: IP Chains Squid Transparent Proxy
Woes

I am having an unusual problem when trying to use IP Chains to
transparently redirect port 80 to the Squid Proxy Server.  The
odd thing is that the IP Chain Command I used in the past did work and
now it doesn't.  I moved directories onto another partition and
then symlinked them immediately prior to this breaking but did not
make any networking changes.

This works when I manually tell each web browser to use
192.168.0.1:3128 as a proxy server.  When I try the commands
below I get an error from Squid like this.  While trying to
retrieve the URL: /Regional/U_S__States/

The following error was encountered:

*
Invalid URL
The URL was http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/U_S__States/.

The relevant IP Chain Commands:
# This adds Squid Transparent Caching Ability.
$IPCHAINS -A input -p tcp -s $INTERNALNET -d 0/0 80 -j REDIRECT
3128

Re: [URGENT] Need help deleting hacked files

2001-01-21 Thread Kevin Diffily

Having been in this boat I can say I sympathize. Your only safe
solution, especially given the knowledge of this hacker is a total
reformat. With that not being possible I would suggest taking off
the essential files to a backup, clean installing and then replacing
the essential files that you saved. Afterwards Tripwire and a
Security Plan. Again all learned the hard way. It sucks but it is
the only way.

Best,
Kevin

Off Topic: Online Support Providers from Providers Perspective

2000-11-22 Thread Kevin Diffily

Hello All,

I am looking for people's experiences pro & con with working for
online tech support providers from the technicians's point of view.
I have looked at a few of the providers and my experience has been
that they either have a minimal amount of people requesting support
and/or they don't have a substantial amount of people requesting paid
support. Any suggestions would be helpful.

My experience is primarily in Linux Systems Administration and Web
Site Application Development.

Yes. You can actually serve up most files from Apache. If you want
to stream files you may want to also look at Real Audio and
Quicktime. Both have servers that will run on Linux and have RPM
installers if you like. There are many, many MP3 Servers out there.
Try Freshmeat.

Not sure what to recommend. I think I saw some stuff about this on Freshmeat.
  I do most of this on a Macintosh.

RPM Upgrade Woes

I seem to be getting caught in a chicken and an egg dilemna here. I

When I run rpm -Uvh rpm-3.0.5-13k.i586.rpm I receive
error: failed dependencies:
 libbz2.so.1 is needed by rpm-3.0.5-13k
 libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2) is needed by rpm-3.0.5-13k
When I try to run rpm -Uvh bzip2-1.0.1-3.i386.rpm to get libbz2.so.1
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: bzip2-1.0.1-3.i386.rpm cannot be installed.

Can anyone offer some advice here?

IMAP Read Only Mailbox Help

2000-10-04 Thread Kevin Diffily

I have run into a serious problem with IMAP on my server. I can read
and write to mailboxes but when I try to delete messages I receive a
"read only mailbox error" from my email client.

Relevant info:
-Mailboxes are located in ~/Mail. Owned by the the user. Permissions
600 or 700.
I have tried setting them to 777 to test for an obvious permission problem.
- Problem surfaced after moving /usr and /var directories to another
drive and then making a symbolic link for these directories in the
root filesystem.
- IMAP-4.7 off of the RH 6.2 CD.

The documentation that comes with this is pretty sparse. Anyone have
any ideas as to what is causing this and possible remedies?

X Server Help

2000-08-30 Thread Kevin Diffily

I have run into a problem that I don't want to resolve by a reboot if
possible. While working in Netscape it froze to the point where I
couldn't go to any other X windows or programs. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE
as well as CTRL+ALT+F1, etc did not get a response. I telneted to
the server from another machine and typed in startx. Strangely this
caused the Helix Gnome bootup sequence to restart at the terminal but
then I get a blue screen.

I have a few questions:
1) How do I get my command line prompt back from the terminal?
2) What are the commands to restart and stop X?
3) Is there an equivalent Keyboard Command in X/Gnome for the Windows
CTRL+ALT+DELETE to allow one to kill running processes?

Slow, slow connections since 6.2 Upgrade.

2000-08-02 Thread Kevin Diffily

Hello - I have been having a heck of a time getting a usable
connection speed since upgrading from RH 6.0 to 6.2. While not a
speed record my download speeds where averaging 2.5-3.0 k/s. Now
they are averaging 0.5-1.0 k/s. This connection is used as a
masquerading nat router for a 3 computer lan.
Two Macs with different modems both reliably connect at 28.8.

Setup:
Hayes 56K External Modem (Telco Lines restrict to 35k).

With 6.0 had used netcfg to set up the connection without incident.
Had set mru/mtu = 500. Max Speed set to 57600.
Client Side: Usual download of between 26-28k/s. (2.5-3k/s)
Server Side: Radius logs at ISP confirmed this (I work for the ISP).

With 6.2 have used Wvdial and netcfg with the following settings
mtu/mru = 296 - 1520?, max speed 57600 -115200.
Client Side: Usual download of between 0.5-1.0 k/s.
Server Side: Radius though shows a consistent 36k connection.

What I am getting is the following:
1) Multiple connect attempts to even get on. * Seems to connect on
try one after a config change and then require many tries after that
to reconnect.
2) Carrier Errors , LCP Timeouts, and connect script failed from
WvDial and connect script failed from netcfg.
3) I can connect with WvDial but not with netcfg.
4) Config changes in /etc/ppp/options do not seem to help with the
connection issues with WvDial.

To put it mildly this is driving me nuts. Have read all the relevant
man pages and docs that I can think of. ANY THOUGHTS OR SOLUTIONS
WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Sorry about the bandwidth. I have attached some of the config and
log files that are relevant.

Does anyone know of a project that will give the functionality
offered at netdrive.com on the server end? This would be a great

Re: Mount Remote SMB Share

>
>/usr/bin/smbmount //peecee/C /mnt/peecee [-U username] [-N]

Yes - I get the response
Usage: mount.smbfs service mountpoint [-o options,...]
Version 2.0.6

Options:
   username=  SMB username
   password=  SMB password
   netbiosname=   source NetBIOS name
   uid=   mount uid or username
   gid=   mount gid or groupname
   port=  remote SMB port number
   fmask= file umask
   dmask= directory umask
   debug= debug level
   ip=destination host or IP address
   workgroup= workgroup on destination
   sockopt=   TCP socket options
   scope= NetBIOS scope
   guest don't prompt for a password
   ro  mount read-only
   rw  mount read-write

This command is designed to be run from within /bin/mount by giving
the option '-t smbfs'. For example:
   mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge,password=foobar //fjall/test /data/test

I am not sure about the printer question but I know that Linux has
the ability send and receive faxes. I suspect it would not be that
difficult to pipe to receive fax to a printer. Fellow listees tell me

Samba Mount of Remote SMB Kernel Support

2000-01-19 Thread Kevin Diffily

I tried to mount a remote Windows NT Server that I have an account on
by issuing the following:
mount -t smbmount -o username=x,password=x
207.136.252.200//ATLAS /SAMBA/ATLAS
and recieved the following response.
mount: fs type smbmount not supported by kernel

My system is Red Hat Linux 6.0 on Intel with a standard install.
How would I add this support to the kernel?

RAID & Init Script Load Order Problems

1999-12-21 Thread Kevin Diffily

I have set up software RAID Level 0 and have run into a problem. The
RAID Array Loads after the init scripts and I need it to load before
them. I have put the Array mounting commands into /etc/rc.d/rc.local
as per the instructions in the RAID How To's. How can I get this to
load the RAID before anything else?

The following is the /etc/raidtab and /etc/rc.d/rc.local files:

echomore /etc/raidtab
raiddev  /dev/md0
raid-level 0
nr-raid-disks 2
nr-spare-disks 0
chunk-size 4
persistent-superblock 1
device /dev/hda2
raid-disk 0
device /dev/hdc2
raid-disk 1

[root@webpageweaver kevin]# more /etc/rc.d/rc.local
#!/bin/sh

# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

if [ -f /etc/redhat-release ]; then
  R=$(cat /etc/redhat-release)

  arch=$(uname -m)
  a="a"
  case "_$arch" in
_a*) a="an";;
_i*) a="an";;
  esac

  # This will overwrite /etc/issue at every boot. So, make any changes you
  # want to make to /etc/issue here or you will lose them when you reboot.
  echo "" > /etc/issue
  echo "$R" >> /etc/issue
  echo "Kernel $(uname -r) on $a $(uname -m)" >> /etc/issue

--More--(63%)
  cp -f /etc/issue /etc/issue.net
  echo >> /etc/issue
fi

# This is intended to mount the /RAID1
/sbin/raidstart /dev/md0
mount /dev/md0 /RAID1

#This starts a generic IP Masquerading
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0

If you have a 6.x version of Red Hat this is already supported in the kernel.
Using a modem I would suggest that you use Squid
http://www/squid.org. It is a good idea anyway.
