Hi Ken,

You setup the static routes you want in /etc/sysconfig/static-routes
one route per line. For those routes not associated with a transient
interface you prefix the route with "any" so that it is brought up at boot
time. All the options of the "route" command are available, but omit the
leading hyphen in front of "-net" or "-host".

an example /etc/sysconfig/static-routes :

any net 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 gw 192.168.1.1

Hope this helps,
Sean

There are multiple paths off our network. Besides the default gateway,
which points to the internet, we also have a router that connects the
company WAN to branch offices.

I can use the route statement to setup a static route as follows:
route add -net 10.184.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 gw 10.0.0.254 metric 1

However, this route doesn't stick when I reboot the system.

How do I make this route persistent so it will always be there (even after a
reboot)?

Thanks!

RE: Static Routes in Redhat 8.0

2003-03-31 Thread Michael Mansour
I thought this was a bug because I was getting the
same issues.

They talk about the workaround as getting the
following script from RH7.x:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-routes

I don't have any RH7.x machines, can someone provide
the script here?

BTW, when I use redhat-config-network to configure my
network under RH8, it creates the route.eth0 file.

The only other issue I have with this setup is when I
use redhat-config-network to add an alias, it adds
many default route entries in my routing table for
each alias device ie. if I have 10 alias devices, I
also have 10 default route entries.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Michael.

here's something:

the file:

contains:

route add -net 10.24.208.1 netmask 255.255.255.255 dev eth0
route add -net 10.24.208.128 netmask 255.255.255.128 dev eth0
route add -net 0.0.0.0 gw 10.24.208.1 netmask 0.0.0.0 dev eth0

those lines are ran whenever a '/sbin/service network start | restart' is
executed.

anything wrong here? i can't figure out how to make the routes available
via static-routes file.

Re: Static Routes in Redhat 8.0

2003-03-26 Thread Ben Russo
Hmm, well can you show us what you have in the file?

I haven't had a need to use /etc/sysconfig/static-routes in
a while, but I checked my /etc/rc.d/init.d/network script to
see how it uses the content of "static-routes" file:
   # Add non interface-specific static-routes.
   if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/static-routes ]; then
  grep "^any" /etc/sysconfig/static-routes | while read
   ignore args ; do
 /sbin/route add -$args
  done
   fi
So it looks like the static-routes file has the format of
a line beginning (with no spaces) either the name of the interface
"eth0" or "eth1" for example,
or "any" and then some whitespace followed by all the arguments and
options that
would normally follow the command "route" if it were used on the command
line.

RE: static-routes with RH8.0

2003-01-21 Thread Toshi Esumi
Rick,

Thanks. It finally worked.
I put
  any net 10.0.254.248 gw 63.214.2.234 netmask 255.255.255.252
in the "static-routes" file under /usr/sysconfig/.

In other words, to add specific route on to a specific interface, I probably
need to put the same info in a different place, I guess, as other people
suggested. My objective has been accomplished by your suggestion. And I
don't have time to pursue the other way. But I couldn't find any description
for the other options.

By the way, if this paticular change is an official one, it should be
documented somewhere in RedHat. I found the original one in the RedHat web
search :
http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/tips/Network-Config-Tips/Network-Con
fig-Tips-4.html
At least this description has to be changed.

Sorry, I'm writing to somebody who is responsible for this document or the
change itself.
Again I appreciate your help, Rick.

The shell code from /etc/init.d/network

# Add non interface-specific static-routes.
if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/static-routes ]; then

It only wants lines that begin with "any".
Apparently the file syntax has changed between your version to version 8.

Subject:static-routes with RH8.0

Does someone have the same experience with RH8.0? I put a static router
statement in /etc/sysconfig/static-routes file as I did with RH7.0. But it
doesn't seem to work when I reboot the PC. It takes the same static route
when I put it manualy using "route" command when it's running. The route I
wanted to put is

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse
Iface
63.214.2.224* 255.255.255.240 U 0 00 eth0

default 63.214.2.2250.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0

route add -net 10.0.254.248 gw 63.214.2.234 netmask 255.255.255.252

eth0 net 10.0.254.248 netmask 255.255.255.252 gw 63.214.2.234
   This didn't work when
I rebooted.

Looking at /etc/sysconfig/network/ifup-routes seems to show that that
was the 'old way'. It seems they now expect a file such as
'/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/$1.route' where $1 is the device name
and the file contains environment variable statements (just like
ifcfg-eth0).

(I'm at home at the mo, but I'll try this tomorrow at work.)

2003-01-20 Thread Toshi Esumi
Matthew,

I put the line you suggested, which is..
 10.0.254.248/30 via 63.214.2.234
in ...
 -rw-r--r--1 root root 33 Jan 20 07:52 route-eth0
under ...
 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
then, 'shutdown -r 0' to reboot it. But it still doesn't take it.

By the way, is this described in someware like a man page or in a doc?

I have looked at adding static routes for a couple of our servers. With
RH8 it seems that 'static-routes' is looked at by /etc/init.d/network.
But it only seems to be used for non interface-specific routes. As the
code shows:

  # Add non interface-specific static-routes.
  if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/static-routes ]; then
grep "^any" /etc/sysconfig/static-routes | while read ignore args
; do
/sbin/route add -$args
 done
  fi

If the line in the file begins with the word 'any' then the rest of the
line is passed to 'route add -'. From what you've said I assume this is
different from what it was in RH7.

In our case I have had to manually add the static routes - which are
interface-specific because we have multihomed servers - directly into
the /etc/init.d/network file. Not ideal but it vaguely works for now.

that's only a front-end to '/etc/init.d/network restart'...
check /sbin/service with your favorite editor...

the entry is fine...when I reboot the machine it works well...
"eth2" is the device...thanks...

AFAIK, "service network restart" is the right way. In you case I think
the entry in /etc/sysconfig/static-routes is incorrect syntatically.

One method to get an idea of correct syntax is to use the gui tool "neat"
and enter a static route there. Otherwise I think the correct entry for
your example above is:

host 172.25.29.1 gw 93.169.1.5

routes in '/etc/sysconfig/static-routes' not read with '/etc/init.d/network restart'

2002-10-14 Thread Freddy Chavez

Hi folks. In RH 8.0 I add a route to
/etc/sysconfig/static-routes such as:
   eth2 host 172.25.29.1 gw 193.169.1.5
Then, I restart network with '/etc/init.d/network
restart' but the new route doesn't show with
'route'.

I've been checking '/etc/init.d/network' and it
seems that it configure only non-interface
specific static-routes:

# Add non interface-specific static-routes.
grep "^any" /etc/sysconfig/static-routes
...

How can I do to rerun all the routes in
/etc/sysconfig/static-routes?

Regards,
Freddy Chavez.

Then you are probably setting ip_forward from your firewall script?

if [ -e /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward ]; then
   echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

I've got "FORWARD_IPV4=yes" setting on my RH7.1 system. Oddly enough,
"net.ipv4.ip_forward" in my /etc/sysctl.conf is set to 0.

I don't know if that works in RH7x. I had to add "net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1"
to /etc/sysctl.conf on my RH72 box.

Re: Adding Static Routes Question

2002-07-13 Thread Mike Burger

BTW...as for how to tell them, that will depend on the OS on the other
systems, and whether or not you're using DHCP or static IPs.

If you're doing DHCP, you can simply tell the DHCP server that the gateway
is 10.10.10.1, and it will give it to the clients at lease renewal.

For the ISC dhcpd, under Linux, you add "option routers 10.10.10.0;" to
/etc/dhcpd.conf

If you're doing it via static IP on each system, you're going to have to
go into the network configuration for each system, and manually set it.

Re: Adding Static Routes Question

2002-07-13 Thread Mike Burger

You don't set them to use 192.168.1.126 as the gateway...you have them
use 10.10.10.1 as the gateway...it's the interface, on the router, that
they can see, by virtue of their network address.

You then set up ip_forwarding (set FORWARD_IPV4=yes" in
/etc/sysconfig/network), so that the firewall/router knows to send those
packets along to the net.

Adding Static Routes Question

2002-07-13 Thread Anthony Abby

Going to do something I've never tried before... building a Linux based
router/firewall. Currently the box is running Redhat 7.3 and will also be
doing DNS services. Both NICs are already installed... eth0 is
192.168.1.126 for the time being, and eth1 is 10.10.10.1. Eth1 is connected
to a hub where other systems on the 10.10.10.x network are connected.

My question is.. how do I add a static route so that all the systems on the
10.10.10.x network can use 192.168.1.126 as a gateway?

Thanks for any help!

Anthony

Re: Static routes get ignored

2000-09-16 Thread Brian Ashe

Hi Peter,

Well at least one place to check is
/etc/sysctl.conf

Make sure there is a line like this

net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1

to enable packet forwarding.

Otherwise, you should post more about your configuration to get more help.
There are quite a few differences between 6.0 and 6.2. Not major ones, just
enough to make things have to be gone over to make things work.

Have fun,

Static routes get ignored

2000-09-16 Thread Peter Kiem

Hi all,

I've just redone my network with a switch instead of the coax cable and also
set up a new firewall machine with 2 NICs in it to prepare for ADSL.

The firewall local IP address is 192.168.0.1 but my servers are on real IP
address of the 203.46.4.192/255.255.255.224 network. So I need to tell the
firewall about the other network.

Using netconf I added the following into "Routing and Gateways", "routes to
alternate local nets"

Network NetmaskInterface
203.46.4.192255.255.255.224eth0

What gets inserted into /etc/sysconfig/static-routes is:
any net 203.46.4.192 netmask 255.255.255.224 gw eth0

Now why is it when I reboot that the above route never gets added. I can't
find any errors in any logs, it just ignores the static route.

The funny thing is the old firewall (RH6.0) box did this fine but my new
firewall (RH6.2) doesn't do it.

Any ideas?

Re: static routes?

eth2 net 207.113.56.1 netmask 255.255.255.255 gw 207.113.56.129
eth2 n default gw 207.113.56.1

here is mine.
replace 207.113.56.1 with your gateway, your isp.
207.113.56.129
is my gateway for the internal lan.

hope that helps

That, or just use route add etc... to your rc.local file

static routes?

2000-03-01 Thread Darryl Harvey

there is a file /etc/sysconfig/static-routes

Does anyone know the format of entries for this file?

I need to add some routes and take it that they should be put in here?

Thanks
