I am using several of the 3 ANT150F6-1 and 2 -2's along with 2 ant440f6, and
2 ant400f2's from telewave with great success since I have had nothing but
problems with the harness on the new db-224's.

The harness Im told have changed and are no longer made in the u.s. either
way im no longer a user of the DB224 or folded dipole systems.

I also have in use 4 Sinclair SC329 with 7/16 Din

So far things are great. No problems at all

We replaced our Sinclair 210 C4 1/4 spaced antenna with a Comprod 874F 1/2
spaced about 3-4 years ago. A marginal improvement in coverage was noticed.
Quality and price point in my opinion is excellent. We also use the same for

2 UHF repeaters. We are very satisfied with our Comprod products and would
highly recommend them.

I am not involved with the Comprod company other than being a satisfied

We have a DB224 antenna that may need to be replaced. It is configured
for an offset pattern [all the loops point the same way] The replacement
antenna should be capable of the same pattern.

An engineer with a local communications company has told me that his
experience with recently purchased DB224 antennas has not been favorable.
Apparently the quality / performance of the current imported ones may not
be as good as the older ones were. Has anyone else had similar issues?

It appears that there are several alternative antennas:
 Sinclair SD214
 Sinclair SD224
 Telewave ANT150D6
 RFS340
 Comprod 874F

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with any
of these antennas in repeater service.

 TIA regards,
 WB0EMU

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Seeking recommendations for 2 Meter repeater antenna

2010-02-11 Thread Brent DeSalvo
Yes, I like my folded dipole over many antennas also, but to have the
proper amount of electrical down tilt that I required, I would not see
getting created on the 224.

The sd213 is agood antenna but while I use a tx combiner with average of
300w cont the sd213 is only rated at I think 150w. where my ant450d6 is good
for my rooftop installation cause I would not personally place this antenna
at 300- or 800' on the tower , do to past exp and design of the ant.

These are all good antennas if placed into the right environment and
application, also in the right budget

Not making this a large thread, it was just a choice I had made in the pick
of antennas and having 11 ham repeaters and 4 sites of 16 channels per site
of astro 7x system. Just say I been down that road many times

Why would you no longer use folded dipole design antennas just because of
one manufacturer having a quality control problem? Other manufactuers make
folded dipole design antennas if you no longer wish to use DB.

I'll take my folded dipole any day over a fiberglass antenna when my site is
paid a visit from Mr. Lightning Strike, not to mention no performance
changes due to down tilt. YMMV.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Rebuild Project Input

2010-01-08 Thread Brent DeSalvo
Depending on what coverage you are looking to expect, will help you choose
the proper gain antenna.

A higher gain antenna is not always a good choice and can cause more
problems and poor coverage then you would expect nearby the repeater.

What is you HAAT? Are most the user going to be fixed station mobile users
or HT? if so How far away from the repeater will you users be?

If your users are near by the site and you have a erp you do not need to
exceed a lower gain antenna or unity gain might do you a great job.

SWR 2:1 have you check this antenna with a true 50ohm analyzer, or into the
transmitter without the duplexers?

Hello All,

I am looking to rebuild a 70cm repeater with an output within the ham band.
We currently have a non-tunable fiberglass comercial band antenna wich is
giving us a SWR of about 2:1. The first piece of advice we are looking for
is recomendations for replacing the antena. There are some conciderations to
go with this. Since it is a privately owned repeater it is in a back yard
and not mounted very high due to lack of an antenna tower or space to put
one up on the property. The antenna will be mounted at about 20 feet from
ground level and we are looking to maximize coverage area so we are looking
at high gain antennas such as the Diamond F718 which would be a step up as
it would lower our SWR. What are your thoughts with this antenna or
recomendations on other high gain antennas for the 70cm band?

Also, we are looking to replace the repeater itself. Right now we have an
old Kenwood business band repeater that has been modified to work in the ham
band but it is becoming more unstable as time progresses. We want to keep
the equipment as back up and would like to look into a new system. We want
something that is computer programable if possible. It also should work with
an external controller as we are using a CAT-1000 with an attached weather
station and CAT weather radio reciever. Right now we are coordinated at 25
watts output but would like to have a repeater that could run 50 watts
continuous. Also, we would like to stay away from D-STAR simply because of
personal preferance. Any suggestions or reccomendations for the repeater
unit?

Thanks for your help!

Have yet any problems with either, (well of course I did. Had to replace
the fuse in the ant jack, not a problem, but we all know why it blew)

Even use the monitors with GD auto test, and it works with ease

And for the 3ghz and mototrbo the R8000 is a great box, GD has always been
good for me, except for their price, you have to just about put your house

Jed,

Whether or not it CAN be done is not an issue. The issue is whether it
SHOULD be done. The notion of a public safety agency operating an alerting
system that is based at someone's home, using privately-contracted phone
lines, is really frightening! What if the dispatcher is indisposed when
an emergency call comes in? What if the teenager in the house is tying up
the Internet connection with XBOX? Will any insurance company indemnify the
at-home dispatcher if a call is unanswered and someone dies? Fire
departments deserve and require professional dispatch personnel at a duty
position.

I disagree with your conclusion that the Internet is more reliable than a
Verizon phone line. I know of no peer-reviewed study that supports such a
statement. Moreover, since a copper telephone connection is about as
reliable as communication can be, I think the reverse is true. In fact, my
Verizon phone line has never failed- in the 35-some years I have had it, but
my Internet connection has failed many, many times. I do not mean to imply
that Verizon is any more or less reliable than any other wireline provider-
only that a copper CO connection from any provider is probably more reliable
than any Internet connection.

Hey guys,
I am working on a project and am wondering if anyone has done this.
Here's the proposal, to set up a dispatch center for an FD, where the
dispatchers can sit at home and work the entire thing.
This is not a very busy department, that's why they thought it would be good
to do it.
I've done a lot of research, and it can certainly be done.
This obviously brings up a lot of debate for a number of reasons. In
looking at it though, the reliability of the net is very good compared to a
verizon phone line.
Curious if anyone has done something like this before.
For the phone system, we're using a virtual phone system that has proven
reliability.

Thanks,
Jed

Jamey,

Same here. I have the same thing I have to do with my Tetra system(s) just
have not done so yet, that is split the the combiner in two, or four
sections, cause as it stands 100 in and 36 out is not that good but that's
the price to pay.

I push about 100watts a channel into the combiner 10 cavities and get about
54watts well more like 48 have to tune them to the lowest power make to make
things optimized on my 406 system

 repeaters.

  I've tried this.
Go up to the repeater, and reboot it, so that it gives the firmware
message, or otherwise let a couple people know that you've been up
 there.

There's a little hum in the audio now.
  It sounds funny
Doesn't get out like it used to
  and so on..

The fact that you did not touch anything, will be lost on the crowd.

In addition to grooves and scratches Metal
Burs and stringer materials from previous installs

Re: [Repeater-Builder] LTR controller on a GE mastr II Help please

2005-05-26 Thread Brent
Gervais,
LTR is a popular trunking format. Logical Trunked Radio Users on a LTR
system are assigned to a specific talk group(s) which are identified by the
radio as a six-digit ID.
the first digit is the are code 0 or1, the third and fourth digits are the
home repeater 01-think 21,
and the user id are the last three digits this is 000 - 254.
They encode all control info as digital subaudible such as the trident
raider controller think a CSI has one also. never used the csi only the
tridents. the controller tells the radios where to be at to accept a
communications transmission.. with in its groups. but

Okay let me see if I have it. What you have is an exciter and a PA
(A transmitter only). A receiver from another base or mobile. No
system board. Okay, If you can't find a replacment receiver system
board, let me know, I'll help you with a work around. At least you
have the 10 V regulator in the shelf.

What you will need are molex connectors and pins. They can be had
from Newark Electronics. I have bought the board mounted connectors
like the system baords have (you really won't need these) and the
regulator ones for connecting to the receiver boards there.
 Good Luck

I guess I wasn't clear enough. I'm familiar with the simulcast paging,
this
is not paging. This is public safety police analog repeaters. The
proposal
is to put three in a row down the town, about 3-4 miles apart, voting
receivers at the two south ones linked back to the 'main' site via UHF
control links and a voting controller there. So, they would vote the best
receiver and simulcast the output of all three repeaters. Not paging, I
know how paging works, I have a VHF pager on a simulcast system. What I'm
looking for is somone who has seen an installation like this or has
experience with it. Personally, I think it will multipath like crazy and
the recovered audio will be crappy. But, if it is a good thing as
suggested
in the recommendation, there must be operating systems out there to listen
 to.

 Thanks,

 Daron,

I will tell you what I know about analog simulcast systems. There is
basically two manufactures of this equipment, Motorola and
Quintron/Glenayre. If you want it to be a fairly good sounding system
stay
away from Motorola equipment. I worked in paging back when there was
still
a lot of analog pagers on the air, half our systems were Motorola, the
other
half Quintron. We finally gave up on the Motorola systems running analog,
you could set them one day and they may work OK but the next day they
would
not. There is a problem how the built their FSK modulators, they were not
matched like Quintron's. The Quintron modulators were matched to .2 of a
dB
between them, Motorola did no matching.

The trick that will help the most with either system is; try and keep the
overlaps where people will not be using the system.

There is other problems with Motorola's simulcast system but that is what
kept them from having a good (as possible) running simulcast system.

There is still a company in Quincy Il. that sells the Quintron (now
Glenayre) line, their company name is ISC Technologies. They have the
manufacturing rights for most of the Quintron/Glenayre line or they may
have
 some used equipment available.

 Paul

 Daron-

Most all your 150 MHz or 900 MHz paging systems are going to be simulcast.
If there are any 150 MHz analog paging systems around, try listening to
 them.

  Hello Folks,

I'm looking over a radio study done by consultants for our small coastal
community. The recommendation includes three simulcast repeaters with
voting receivers. We live on the coast, the terrain is covered with
tall
trees that make wonderful reflectors and contribute tons of multipath
when
wet, and it rains plenty. I can't think of any place with terrain
issues
where I have seen a simulcast VHF repeater system built out.

If you have any references (for or against) a simulcast system like
this,
please drop me a note. I suspect a fair amount of multipath problems
and
not real great audio for the mobile units based on their location, but I
wouldn't be able to prove it until the thing got installed.

  Ideas?

  Thanks,

you can do the process of elimination but that is a long process since some

Interesting questions Dave,

All the electrical equipment is properly grounded
and up to code. Grounds are grounded properly and
the supply cords are complete and include the
ground.

Another last symptom clue. The main problem ends
up being the controller locking up in a looping
reset mode. The missing audio ends up be a sidebar
when the controller starts whacking out.

There is and has been from some years, a load of
commercial gear running nearby. This system was
working peachy, then started acting funny and gave
me a bit of grief trying to rid the gremlin.

Now things are peachy again.

Skipp - Sorry but I have to make a stab at this. How about the
condition of the electrical service entrance. Are the
grounds really ground? Or are the power supply cords still using a
grounded cord? Sounds to me like something in the
audio chain is building some sort of lumped capacitance, and is not
getting to a common ground properly. Is there a true
common ground point for all gear, and if there is, is there any
other commercial gear running close by?

it would lock up my rlc2 controller until i took it off the same power
source and used battery power it fixed it.. but the trident controller was

[Repeater-Builder] f/s:cat300Dx and rls-1000

2005-04-17 Thread Brent

I have for sale a Cat 300DX
controller, just taking out of service.
Nothing is wrong with the controller. It
works great so does the rls-1000

these are not hooked up to each other. but
of course can be..

I am also looking for a Kenwood TM-G707
that I might can trade the 300 for.

Please contact me direct... off list.. I
will give a price then.

Please note if I ship these units. I will
NOT send via USPS..
I have tried to send out lowband radio
twice to a fellow ham and also tried to receive some equipment via USPS and they
have never made it to the destination.. I send items a few states away via USPS
and they just say they will reimburse me.. so I will only ship UPS or
FedEx...

thanks
Brent

I Had a guy install a antenna for me at one of my sites.
Guess what he did when he hooked the jumper from the antenna to the
 hardline. ? ? ? ?
The Guy Used teflon tape on the darn connectors.., it screwed me all up.

Are you talking about that white non-adhesive stuff used for plumbing?
And what did he do, wrap it on the actual threads of the connector, like
two pieces of water pipe? Or over the top after it was assembled? The
latter doesn't sound like it would be a problem, might even be a halfway
decent idea-with the usual coax-seal or whatever over it, and real type
 33 or similar over that.
The teflon tape would be an additional layer of protection, plus it
would keep the coax-seal from sticking to the connector if/when removed.

Were they PL-259 connectors on the jumper. An 'N' connector is self-
grounding with the inside ring around the center pin. I don't see how
teflon tape on the threads would hurt due to the self grounding
feature unless he got the tape into the connector.

2005-03-24 Thread Brent

Thats what im looking for Better signal to noise ratio ! Right now it is
amplifing more than what is needed.
I will experiment with this 8 and 10db pads i have.
I am interested in what type of pad people are using, since this preamp is
mounted inside the mastr II vhf receiver when i received it its location
might need to be or should be moved.. but if i intend to leave it there it
has a bnc to rca jumper installed from the preamp to the receiver, and i
would need to install the pad there.

It is common practice to use 6 to 10 db of attenuation between a new
high gain (typically as much as +18 db) GaAsFET low noise amplifier and
an older receiver. The gain of the preamp is about 10 db higher than
you need for the receiver yet you can gain benefits from the low noise
front end and high intermod resistance. Placing the attenuator between
the preamp and the receiver doesn't hurt the noise figure yet keeps the
receiver front end input signal within acceptable limits. It doesn't
reduce the usable sensitivity of the receiver either. The attenuator
doesn't make up for deficiencies in a duplexer but it certainly can slam
the door on other problems many of us have faced with excessive gain
ahead of our older less sensitive receiver. The result is a much lower
noise front end with moderately higher gain. Bottom line: better signal
 to noise ratio.

[Repeater-Builder] GE mastr II UHF and rc-210

2005-03-23 Thread Brent

For the past two days my repeater has been working great..it is a GE mastr
II uhf at 40watts, no preamp, phelps dodge duplexers and a db-420 antenna
fedwith 7/8 andrews.

All the sudden last night at about 11:30 it went to ID and all there was, is
white noise. no voice can pass thru.
it will blow white noise for as long as you have the repeater keyed up, and
when you un key it still have the white noise for as longs as the hang time
and then it drops. You can not hear the curtiousy beeps for speech id's etc.

Any thoughts on what could be going on..

Unlock the controller and send the reset command (*21999)
and see if that helps. Using a Mastr II UHF on port one,
a 6 meter Mastr II on port 2, and a Phoenix link radio
on port three. I was only getting the white/pink noise
 on port one.

It never happened again, so I've never bothered Ken about it.

Anybody have any suggestions on varing the power on the M57719N Power

Would it be best to limit the rf input?

Would it be ok to lower the vcc on the module?

which would be the best approach?

2005-03-23 Thread Brent

With all comments in mind I have gone and tested the m57719n at a low power
setting and it seem like it has to work harder at lower power setting. (as
stated below)
So I have decided to go with another power module.

Subject: Re: [Repeater-Builder] M57719N RF power module

 Brent,

Typical RF power amplifier modules are most efficient and produce the
least spurious output when operated at the rated output level. The
M57719N is rated at 14 watts on a 12.5 VDC supply, over the 142-163 MHz
range. When you start reducing the drive or lowering the supply voltage,
you will very likely cause the module to become unstable and its
 efficiency will plummet.

A case in point: My radio club has a packet node that uses a name-brand
mobile transceiver on the 2m side of the system. In compliance with the
Part 97 dictum to use the minimum power necessary for communications, we
set the power level on the 2m radio to low, thinking that it would
dissipate much less power at the lowest level, thereby allowing its duty
cycle to be high. After operating flawlessly for several months, the PA
module burned up. A replacement module cost about 80% of the cost of a
new radio, but we felt it was worth repairing the radio. I installed the
new module carefully and ensured that all drive parameters were correct.
I also ran some tests to determine the efficiency of the module at each
of its four drive levels. Surprise! It was most efficient at the
highest (50 watts) power setting, and the module ran hotter at lower
power levels- verified with an infrared thermal scanner. I confirmed the
amount of heat being generated within the PA module versus the power
being transferred to the antenna, by noting the current draw. This was
not what I expected; I really thought that the input current would be
more or less proportional to the output power setting, but that was not
the case. The radio current draw at the 5 watt setting was about half of
the current draw at the 50 watt setting. That means that the input power
that didn't go the antenna was being wasted in the PA module, and it
 couldn't handle the heat.

This looks like a fertile ground for experimentation. Moreover, it may
not be prudent to use a 14 watt module when all you need is, say, 5
watts. If the 14 watt module does not lend itself to efficient power
control, then it may be a good idea to install a 5 watt module. You
might also contact Mitsubishi engineering for guidance on controlling the
 power of their products.

For those who may not have the Wacom catalog handy, the WP-643 duplexer

two are
bandpass only. The WP-639 duplexer comprises four 5 BpBr cavities that

rated at 80 dB isolation at 600 kHz spacing, with 1.5 dB insertion loss.
Needless to say, the WP-643 is vastly superior to the WP-639 at 2m
spacing.

You could use two of the WP-639 cavities for bandpass application, if you
replaced the single BpBr coupling loop with two Bp loops on each cavity.
Try
the WP-643 in stock form first.

I totally agree with Eric's suggestions.

Hmm I just hooked up a set of cans over
here, and they were tuned for my freq used them b4 well2 year a

and I tested the antenna with 75watts direct from a

hooked up the duplexer and repeater (75w) and check
the SWR was a crankin + 5:
so I checked the antenna again with the repeaters
transmitter direct to the ant and it is 1.3:1 from 75-100w

must be the im proper tuning, time for the r2600 to
come out and play and tell me where the things are tuned at I hope.

Check your transmitter for spurious signals...
much of your power might not be on the freq. you think it is...Also check the
reflected power at the TX port, this can be an indication if the cavities are

Kevin
Thanks I just look back at the meter and I stated 20Watts it was NOTit was 5
watts. with over 5 watts it causes the desense Problem..
I would think that since this is a PLL exciter and im am only needing 15-25
watts out that it should do ok ..
what would your thoughts be about adding 2 10 pass cav. to the receiver
side.. and or should i go with out the preamp.

 Not enough duplexer.
For a 50 to 100 watt Station with a receiver preamp you should have *at
least* a WP-641, and that may not be enough unless its a PLL exciter type.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Desense im guessing?

On the duplexers the specs state I should have about 1.5 db loss on the TX
port... I just measured the power output into a dummy load. from just the
TX'er. it is set back to 30watts out..

I then hooked the duplexers back up and measured again. I have 12 watts into
the same dummy load..

with little over 3db loss I am thinking the cans were touched at one point
another. I had workers up at the site and since then the repeater has not
been working to good..
this is the reason for my Question about the desense..

If you are sure the duplexer is tuned okay, the cable between the
 duplexer and transmitter needs optimized.
Look at this PDF file for more info:
 http://www.repeater-builder.com/wacom/wp6xxVHFtuninginstructions.pdf

1.5 dB is 29%, so 30 watts reduced 1.5 dB should equal 21.3 out of the
 'plexer.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Desense, I'm guessing?

2005-03-21 Thread Brent

With yours and Kevins reply, I have decided to go with a set of WP-643's
and not use the WP-639's, I belive this would get me going. and if I need
the pre amp then i will add it along with the pass cavities.

One more Quick Question, since i have the set of 639's here. what would the
affect of two cans from the 639s be if added to the 643's receiver side
beside the loss.

 Brent,

Although there are those who will disagree with me on this, I think your
WP-639 duplexer is simply not capable of sufficiently isolating your
receive
and transmit frequencies. While the WP-639 may get by on a low-powered
system without a preamp, you may be demanding too much in your
installation.

Since the operating range of a repeater is limited more by its receive
capability than by its power output, it makes sense to maximize the
receive
capability and run the minimum output power needed.

First of all, the phrase factory tuned needs to be qualified. I will
readily acknowledge that the majority of big-name duplexer manufacturers
have
the equipment (network analyzer) and expertise (highly-trained
technicians)
to properly tune a duplexer exactly to your stated operating frequencies.
Very often, a factory-tuned duplexer is accompanied by a rather pompous
statement of the form, This duplexer has been carefully tuned on
laboratory-grade equipment, and NO FURTHER TUNING IS REQUIRED. Yeah,
right! Unless I drove to the plant and picked up that duplexer myself, I
can
guarantee that it will be jostled, dropped, and bounced around during
shipment to the point that it MAY be detuned enough to adversely affect
its
operation. I always check duplexers, isolators, and cavity filters on my
own
laboratory-grade equipment before installation, and I find perhaps 30% of
them needing realignment. Please understand that the detuning most likely
occurred during shipment, and is not the fault of the manufacturer.

Whenever you put a preamp in front of a receiver, you really should put a
very narrow bandpass cavity filter in front of it. It always comes as a
surprise to neophyte repeater owners that a bandpass/bandreject or
BpBr
duplexer has almost no bandpass action at all. The notch or reject action
is
the major player, and the bandpass effect is minimal if nonexistent.
Moreover, nearby carriers can sail right through the duplexer and cause
major
desense to your receiver. When you add a preamp, you are not just opening
the barn door wider, you are amplifying all of the intruders!

My personal preference is for two 8 bandpass cavities set for a total of
1.0
dB insertion loss after the receive side of the duplexer, and before the
RF
preamplifier. Don't be tempted to use one 10 or one 8 cavity set for
1.0
dB instead of two set for 0.5 dB each; the out-of-band rejection by two
cavities is much greater than one cavity by itself. This is something I
learned by experience- you can believe me now, or go off and find out for
yourself. Trust me, you WILL settle on a minimum of two cavities.

In the present climate of terrorist activity and natural disasters, it
does
not make any sense to deploy a repeater system that barely gets by or is
good enough for the majority of users. It makes me very proud to be a
member of an Amateur Radio group that designs and installs repeater
systems
that are as good as, and in many cases are better and more reliable than,
commercial systems operated by public safety organizations. I sincerely
wish
that all repeater operators felt the same way!

For those who may not have the Wacom catalog handy, the WP-643 duplexer
comprises six 8 cavities that are rated at 102 dB isolation at 600 kHz
spacing, with 2.2 dB insertion loss. Four of the cavities are BpBr, and
two are
bandpass only. The WP-639 duplexer comprises four 5 BpBr cavities that
are
rated at 80 dB isolation at 600 kHz spacing, with 1.5 dB insertion loss.

 Mike, Brent, Jack...Great feedback.

The RP70U is currently on 456.825 in/451.8625 out. The modified
repeater will be 445.800 in/440.800 out (if I'm lucky).

The advance warnings/tips you guys provided on the duplexer, mic
connectors, manual, and volume/squelch controls will surely head off
 a lot of trouble.

An original Owner's Operating and Maintenance Manual came with the
RP70U, But I have not yet compared it with what's at www.repeater-
builder.com. BTW, my scanner only goes to 8.5 x 14, so if anybody
with a bigger scanner cares to add anything to the Files section
from my manual that's not there already let me know at vesterscott @
bellsouth.net and I'll loan it to you.

Jack, is a flatpack duplexer like the small black Celwave mobile
duplexers that pop up on eBay all the time? Don't believe I've heard
 that term before.

Brent, do each of the CTN34 tone boards perform both encode and
decode. IOW, if I want the same tone in and out, will a single board
give me full CTCSS for any given tone? I was not able to reach a
firm conclusion on that from the manual and schematics.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Standard RP70U help?

2005-03-19 Thread Brent

I have gotten many of my xtals to re-crystal them thru www.icmfg.com but
that was my prefrence. Other of your choice im sure could do a good job
also.. as far a providing info the the xtal mfg. just tell them the make and
model standard RP70u and they have all the info on hand ..but make sure one
thing since there were a few standards made that have the solder in xtal and
some the plugged into the holder... just make note of the crystal style when
ordering..

What freq. is the repeater presently on at this time?
There is not much info on the web about the CTN34 tone boards.
they are end/dec and as you can tell Dip switch selectable.. for the
standard ctcss tones.
if the unit was built for 450-470mhz and u go that low im sure you will have
to do some work to the receiver to have good rx sense I have gotten them
down to 442.100 with no problem but they start to get real sharp on the
tuning not giving you much adjustment up or down on the slugs more like
1/16th of a turn and its gone.. so tune slow when doing so. if i can help
fell free to contact me directly brent @ tnweb.com

[Repeater-Builder] Helical Front end UHF

2005-02-24 Thread Brent

SPEAKING of front ends...
I have a set of helical Resonator from a standard repeater... and it is on
467.2 rx and moving it to the 448.000
Everything else tunes up just fine, so the thought was to add about 1/4 of
same material and size wire that it is already wrapped with
so the tuning slugs wont be so far down in the cans...(not much height on
the cans themselves). and a 1/4 could it me that much that the slugs are
now out of the can.. ???
or would I want to try to move the Tap on the coil first any thoughts.

We need a little more information on the repeater you have, such as
the model number and the rough dimensions of the coils and the cavity.

 I have converted a Yaseu FTC-4610 from 474 to 443MHz (With .32uV
sensitivity) by adding 1/2 of a turn to the top of the coils, perhaps
the same can be accomplished here. Also you can try replacing the
slugs with a different material such as Brass or Aluminum to shift the
resonance, I have used brass screws on a VHF micor with good but not
 perfect results.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Comm Spec TP-38

2005-02-22 Thread Brent

Hello Skipp,

I have all known tones turned on and active..(double checked that a few
times)
It will not decode them or show them at all
it will show and decode all below 100.0 with no problem, and it does that
like it should with no delay..

but if i try the 100.0 it has to have that tone signal present for at least
3 seconds before it will show or decode it..

it is like a audio amp gone bad or some thing.. but i did swap them around
and reset the x2122 in the unit and still no difference..
I must be missing some type of failure somewhere..

Does the tone panel even display frequencies above
100Hz, just not decode them? That's a software
problem or programing. Most other problems are
hardware related. Just running a test sub tone in
from an external source will tell you mucho.

though it does end up being much longer physically than it needs to be.

In Western Pennsylvania, we use a Waiver form for this. I have been
involved with 4 such instances, 2 where I was the asking party, 2 where
I was the granting party. In most instances the distances were a few
 miles from the rule.

 The form:

Maybe your local coordinator has a similar form, or will accept this one
 if they don't.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] in-band linking update

2005-01-09 Thread Brent

Chris..
I have done what you are talking about several times.
And what they are talking about with the cavity is that u tune the notch
side the the can to notch out the repeaters TX freq and tune the pass for
what the link radio will be operating at to the middle of the frew that are
used for tx and rx on the link radio if different if the same simplex
operations is used tune the pas for that freq so the tx and rx will pass
thru. and the reject is knocking the repeaters tx freq out and you can do
the same for the repeater on the rx side with one more can also... tuned to
pass the repeaters rx side and reject the links tx side... but if you have
no problems with the link causing harm to the repeaters rx'er than dont
worry about it but i would check it out anyways with a week single present
and the links tx ON and while still listening to the local rx turn the link
TX of ans listen for a difference...listen for desense...
Good Luck

 Hi Wade,

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess my gutt told me the proper tune-up
procedure was the way to go. We just didn't have the time to do it at the
 time.

I have one question about what you said. You say I should have
pass-reject
duplexers on both systems. How can I put a pass-reject duplexer on a
radio
that has only one antenna port? I can see why the filtering would be
helpful, but the remote base is operating in half-duplex so it really
 doesn't seem necessary.

There is a good duplexer on the repeater itself, and the link doesn't
appear
to desense the repeater. Frankly, I don't care if the remote base is
desensed a little, as long as I can receive the repeater at the other end,
which I can. I do notice a quiet squeel in the background of the received
signal on the remote, which I assume is the repeater's transmitter. I
think
putting a notch can on the remote base, to notch out the repeater's
 transmitter, might do the trick.

The squeel, while annoying, isn't a big deal right now. The repeater
itself
id deaf as a post, and we know that is attributable to the Micor receiver
 itself.

 Thanks and 73,
 Chris, KG0BP

The UHF Micor Mobile was a little tricky to tune, especially the
AFC
type. I would take care to follow the tuning procedure as outlined in
the
  manual to the letter.

Also, I am not sure what isolation measures you have already taken
 but
they would have to be fairly extensive for pairs that close in frequency
 to
coexist happily at the same site, in order to work properly. I would
suggest all 100% sheided cables - preferably Heliax, Pass/reject type
duplexers on both systems, and at least 1 extra high quality pass cavity
 on
both transmitters. This is just for starters. Each site is configured
differently so there may be several other measures to take. Good earth
grounds to all components of the system and extra sheilding for mobile
radios used in a full duplex environment are 2 other necessary things to
 do.

It sounds like you have quite the system, and you are probably
aware
 of
the suggestions I am making here but sometimes the obvious things are
the
easiest to forget. Sounds like your getting there.

Best of luck to you and 73,

   All,

   A couple months ago I posted a question about in-band linking. I
 thought
I'd post an update on how it seems to be working.

The repeater is on 442.750+ running about 25 watts. It's a converted
  Micor
   mobile.

The remote base listens on 443.025 and transmits about 25 watts on
  448.025.
The repeater it's talking to is about 90 miles away over a very good
 path.
The remote base is an Icom 900 module attached to an FC-900.

The repeater shows no obvious desense, and the signal strength of the
 link
is full-quieting. There is one odity, though. The link seems to have
  some
sort of high-pitched, low--amplitude, squeel on it. I assume this is
 some
spur from the repeater's transmitter. We plan to try to notch that
out
  when
   we get a chance.

There is one odity, though. The Micor has been in service for about 2
  years
now. When we first set it up, the receiver sensativity was about .35
 UV.
Now, we can't get it to come below about .7UV. I should point out
that
 we
didn't do the full tuning procedure, we just tried to tweak things

Hi AllI've got an installation here where I have three 2 meter
antennas
and a 2 meter repeater that will only operate on one of them without
serious
desense. The antennas are a simple J pole, a Hustler G7 ---144 and a small
triband vertical. I know that none of these have much to offer and I am
now
in the market for a proper commercial repeater antenna but just the same,
what is my problem?-only the J pole works acceptably. VSWR on all
antennas using the repeater signal reads unity or very close to it between
duplexer and antenna feed line, distant transmitt signal strength
measurement sees the Hustler a bit stronger and they all receive a distant
weak signal (repeater transmitter off) about the same (maybe the Hustler
is
a bit better). What I'm saying here is that all three antennas seem to
work
about right for what they are except that I get serious desense on two of
them---30 watt transmitter, a two stage isolator in place, 6 can P-D
duplexer and about 20 watts into the antennas no duplexer tuning
 between antenna changes. Thanks!

 Scott, N6NXI

Might look into Selectone or MXCOM or Transcrypt- they made some inversion
scramblers - In a nutshell, the scrambler breaks the vol hi and mic lines.
Looks for an optimum input level from the mic and vol circuits (fixed
attenuators sometimes are needed on both in and out of both mic and vc
hi),
and has a line to ena / dis. Also may have lines or a 20 turn pot to set
 the break frequency.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Diamond X500

2004-10-16 Thread Brent

Good one Neil, or use it for a Rain gauge. j/k
I have tried to keep moisture out of those antenna and have had no luck, do
to them no having a good vent hole at the bottom to release any moisture. So
i drilled a little hole near the bottom of the antenna and than installed a
small hose like a fishing tank pump hose about 4-5 long and routed it
towards the bottom for a drain. it seems to have helped..

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater cuts out during XMIT

2004-10-11 Thread Brent

Mark,
I have ran into that problem my self and well the
first thing is that..
when the radio is programmed you want to make sure
that the TOT was set to max or OFF and allow the controller to take control of
that function..of the TOT and second if those radios prob. a maxtrac, were used
as a repeater and or even at 4-10watts they will still over a long peroid of
TX'ing generate enough heat to send a signal to have the PA back it power down.
and if that is the case and they are using a ext. amp it might not excite
the Ext amp and in turn have no Rf output..but you might hear it close to the
site...

I was at a club station and was on their freq.
noted that there was problem, which someone would be talking for awhile and
then suddenly the S-meter goes to 0 like they stopped transmitting, noted that
they were checking over the RF amplifier with a meter, noted that they were
also trying different filters ? to keep the exciter to about 1 Watt,
they were using a Motorola radio for the Transmitter cannot recall model, only
Black case and recent programmable series ans Green LED Channel
  display.

I am guesing RF Amo problem either at Exciter or
RF Amp. Am I right in presuming the problem ?

  Hi
  Russ,

  Be
Careful driving in New York with a scanner. Sec 397 of the V+T Law makes it a
misdemeanor to have a radio in your car capable of receiving police
transmissions unless you are law enforcement or have a permit. There is a
vague clause in the section that was probably intended to exclude hams but it
is poorly worded. I would hate to see your trip ruined by an over zealous
  officer.

Hello All,
My lovely bride and I are takeing a week and going up to Canada for a
week next month. What my question is. I want to plug in the police into my
scanner to listen on the way up. Does any of you from the north know what
frequensya the state police use in New York state?
I we are going across the lower teir and I belive it is I-390 north to
the NY thruway west to Bufalo NY then over in to Canada. Then does any one
know any local frequecy in Nigra Canada? Some some thing to monitor while I
drive smile Also any repeaters along the way? I have all the PA, and
south stuff ready to dump from my computer to the Bearcat.
Any good GMRS open repeaters along the way? (In the US)
Thank you ahead of time for the help!
Very best of 73,
Russ,

Simple answer: You're not receiving a police transmission. You're
receiving a retransmission of a police transmission. It's like a ham
repeater. Anyone on a repeater is not listening to the ham's signal -
you're listening to the repeater's signal.

That may be technically true, but I wouldn't want to bet on the
effectiveness of the argument to an officer who didn't like the idea of
you
 listening to police traffic.

Either run AC fans or use a different power supply than the one running

---I'm running two 12 Vdc fans in my Micor repeater. I use a 200 uh choke
in each lead (+ -) and a 1000 mf cap across them, on the supply side. I
then use a transistor to control 'em and I have absolutely no noise
 whatsoever using this scheme.

I suspect part of the problem is that most people forget to treat both
supply lines and noise gets introduced due to ground loops and stray
currents.
