Re: [Repeater-Builder] OT Power Factor
Very interesting subject. People don't seem to be concerned about what kind of energy they are receiving from electric power company suppliers. I've asked previously for information about what people get in their homes and repeater sites with only one response telling me taps are available to solve a high or low problem. Do phase shift capacitors have an effect on our home our test equipment, repeaters? The AC specs here are 115.2 - 124.8. A calibrated NBS Fluke 77 reads consistently on the high end, and frequently up as high as 128. The power company engineer says they can do nothing about it, that taps do not exist anywhere in the system to lower the line voltage. Only phase shift capacitors. Our older test equipment designed around a 115 volt line plus AC motors, power transformers can have a problem with saturation. On a room to room/ garage/ shop investigation how many transformers, motors are in your dweling? Those big honker 30 amp or higher power supplies on repeaters going up in smoke. What's in your walletI mean your electric service line? GaryK2UQ In a message dated 2/9/2009 7:30:24 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, wb2...@roadrunner.com writes: Depends. Are the meters on the side of buildings metering real power or apparent power? Is power factor correction worth doing if the power company is not dinging the customer for low power factor? This article _http://powerelectrohttp://pohttp://powerelechttp://powerehttp://powehttp://pohtt_ (http://powerelectronics.com/power_management/motor_power_management/705PET23.pdf) talks about residential power factor correction and my conclusion (from this article) is the savings would never be recouped. Second conclusion is the only benefit with correction is the wires between the source and load don't heat up as much. What about the wires in the motor or transformer? do they also heat less? I would think so. Third conclusion is by correcting power factor you are helping the utility company more than yourself because these phase differences "standing waves" exist all the way back to the power generation source therefore the utility lines have more loss due to their greater length than the customers building wiring has. The reason I am researching this is a customer of mine has roughly 50 hp of total motors in his shop and wanted to know if he could save 30% on his electric bill like some salesman of power factor correction black boxes told him he could. I realize I am going to have to look at his energy bill to see if there is a charge for low power factor and maybe call the utility company to see if he will get a lower rate if he adds PFC devices tom (\__/) ... Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Wits End -- Desense
Many years ago I experienced a defective section of coax that would change impedance when physically moved. Found out after slitting open about 12 inches of outer shield the dialectic was dried out and cracked from old age. When moved it would form air gaps between the center conductor and the inside of the outer shield hence changing the impedance of the coax. The dielectric looked like many thin insulated washers all stacked up on the center conductor. Bet something that would create some desense. I'd replace that coax from the duplexer to the RX and inside the Rx to first stage. Another problem was solved when it was discovered the center pin of a N connector was recessed too much when the tech fabricated the cable, forming a very small air gap capacitor between the male/female center conductor. [Repeater-Builder] High AC Line
Apologize for being off topic but a safety question. Do you people monitor your AC line at your home, business, shop etc? I've been having a problem in central NJ with high line around 1:00 am. Our spec is 115.2 - 124.8. Around 1 AM I run 127.0, 126.4 with a daily average around 124 during the rest of the day. As we all know many electronic products are really not off when we hit the off button. Although today's electronics are designed for higher AC line voltages. I've already experienced one work bench light ballast fire. Plus a large number of smoked electronic test equipment. I continually see phase shift capacitors being switched in and out on my line monitor or is it bad grounds? The volt readings are done with a Fluke 77 that has been calibration checked and certified correct. Would someone educate me on proper power utilities. Shortening Phono plug center pinreal easy. Find appropriate size drill bit that fits into center pin of phono plug. Mount drill bit horizontally in your bench vise. Adjust phono plug on drill bit until your happy with center pin length. Use a jewelers saw to cut unwanted center pin length off. Do not cut drill bit. Only use it as a length guide and support. Smooth and bevel new edge with a real fine file. Presto ! Do a bunch of them in one sitting then put them in a special bag labeled phono plug shorty's. [Repeater-Builder] Mobile antenna installation help/fatigued metal
Thank you to all who provided great solutions on solving tearing effect from mobile mounts on thin autobody metal vehicles. It all may now be moot because, We all should be aware of legislation being proposed in many states such as "Driving While Distracted" or "Inattentive Driving" laws. These new laws will curtail mobile radio operations. CT, NY, NJ and DC already have laws prohibiting people talking on cell phones while driving. A proposal in NJ while not yet introduced for voting but being formulated: New Jersey clarifies that a distracted driver may be charged with reckless, careless or unsafe driving when so warranted, a law enforcement officer may charge a person with a violation if that person, while operating a motor vehicle, engages in distracting behavior including, but not limited to, the use of communications technology such as wireless telephones, pagers, facsimile machines, locator devices, AM/FM radios, compact disc players, audio cassette players, video players, citizens band radios, and dispatch radios; engaging in personal grooming; consuming food or beverages; reading; or tending to unsecured pets. So heads up, be careful, keep one ear to your state capitol and the other to the mobile rig while driving under those low hanging tree branches. Soon we may not need mobile antennas. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Anetenna Help
Just about any 5/8 wave antenna mounted on top of a Ford pickup truck. The roof metal is so thin that frequent flexing from antenna sway, wind resistance, low tree branch contact can cause metal fatigue on the cab roof. The antenna NMO mount was installed directly above the cab interior light. Nice install but the metal finally cracked about 1/2 inch circumference further out from the outer edge of the NMO mount. The singing problem was resolved by wrapping thin fishing line around the full antenna length at about 1 turn per 1 1/2 inches for its full length. The thinner the whip antenna the higher the audio frequency. Observe automobile antennas and you will see many factory manufactured AM/FM antennas wrapped as mentioned above. Go out and wiggle your mobile antenna. Look at the automobile metal near the base. Watch it flex. The longer the antenna the more flexing. I solved the problem by relocating the antenna using a homemade bracket mounted between the front fender and hood near corner of windshield. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! For those who like to bang tree limbs, bend the thin metal of their automobiles and listen to the singing breezes while driving, that's great but for a little powerhouse that does a darn nice job, that thru the glass R/S antenna is right up there with the big boys. [Repeater-Builder] Re> Mic hangup clip installation
Velcro, foam tape and any type of glue just don't do it. Come summertime the heat build makes the glue soft and the weight from the mic pulls the clip away from the plastic dashboard. Outgassing of the plastic dashboard and glue is a problem also. My solution is the get your new mic clip you bought from the local truck stop and make up a thin metal plate. Look for a partition between two items on the dashboard and slightly pry it apart, jam the end of the little metal plate (which should have a slight curve on the opposite end from the mic clip) between the dashboard partition. Been mounting mobile mic clips this way for years and never have a problem. Look for a horizontal partition slot. The fabricated thin plate should look like a "J" when viewed from the edge. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Tower installs
Al and all, Agreed drilling a hole in the base at the high stress point is not the best idea But, you must remember that a tower will remain there for many years. I have tried the porous pea gravel method and after a few years the porous effect gets clogged up like the fuel filter on an automobile. Bad part of it you have no knowledge the clogging process is happening until the next freeze, then its too late. Now you have a major crack at the worst possible place. It makes me very nervous to drill anything like that at that location. Maybe a 1/16 hole would be more appropriate. On a TRI (120 deg) legged tubular tower I drilled the holes on the inside of each leg. I have never had a tower come down either in my 50 years of tower installs. Years ago I drove to Toledo, On arriving and upon exiting my car in a heavy wind storm I observed a 40 foot tower with a honker TV antenna going horizontal. That was impressive. Concrete was at grass level instead of at the bottom of the hole where it should have been. Building codes and township variances. Get one if you require one. Don't sneak it up because your present neighbors say they don't care what you do. 20 years down the road your nice neighbor will move or die, or whatever. The new home owner may have a totally different opinion of your tower. I was talked into obtaining a building variance for my tower by an old ham friend. Glad I did. Because years later the woods turned into houses and the Civic Association presented a petition to the township about my 'ugly' tower. They were told to leave me alone, its long time ago approved and accepted. I f you need engineering help get it. Find a state licensed PE or someone who is qualified. Do your homework. NEVER trust a weld and remember tubular towers rust from the inside out. Remember that when you climb an old tower. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "Repeater-Builder" on the web. [Repeater-Builder] Additional suggestion on Tower Installation
Be aware that when a tower is connected to a house for support it will cause noise created by wind, vibration, creaking, moaning, grinding, etc. to be transmitted throughout the house. This can keep the wife and maybe you upset while trying to sleep to the point that you wish you didn't install it that way. Depending on tower section installation, those who live in areas where it can freeze, you may consider drilling a 1/8 inch hole aprox 1/2 inch above earth level. You will get condensation build up over time. Maybe not in AZ but elsewhere other installers may consider it. If it cracks due to frost freeze you will have a major problem. Lastly, don't do as a newbie tower installer I know did. He installed the tower upside down. Yes, when it rained the water flowed down the tower legs and right into the lower sections. If you bury bottom section in dirt, even galvanized metal will over time rust right at grass level. Oxygen along with acids in the soil will act on galvanizing at grass level. That's why towers should have a coating of heavy tar or rubberized paint to protect the legs. Don't forget the ground rod. Gary Katona K2UQ age 67 YAHOO! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Ultimate test coax cables
Joe, I've melted PL259 connectors on 20 meters but never seen one glow because of the spring becoming so hot. Bet it took the temper and tension out of that spring. We had a Radio Shack store in town catch on fire last year. Someone placed some combustible liquid next to a space heater and it burned 5 adjacent stores out in the strip mall before the fire was contained. Another thing people should be aware of is the MOV's in low quality plastic multi AC strip outlets. These cheap MOV's sometimes short out and become very hot, resulting in melting the plastic multi outlet, then burning your house down. I hear this type of problem happens more than people realize. MOV's are good, they do a decent job and serve a useful purpose. But don't rely on a 30 cent item to protect everything in your home. Purchase a quality large MOV capable of handling a good amount of joules from an electrical outlet supplier. Install it on your service breaker panel box. It will protect your whole house. Check with your local electrical code prior to doing this. Many people are unaware some lightning shots inter homes via the telephone line, not the AC line. MOV's are available for them also. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Ultimate test coax cables
While the discussion is about proper and quality cable, don't forget to keep away from PL 259 style Tee connectors sold by Radio Shack. They have a little coil spring that puts pressure on the center conductor going between both SO 239 ends. This little spring is the center connection and it also is a RF coil and acts as an inductor that will play havoc on 440 MHz area and above frequencies. I cut one in half with a hacksaw and the spring on center conductor is quite obvious. Use only quality connectors. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "Repeater-Builder" on the web. A way of crimping solderless lugs, pins on connectors, etc. when your out in the field and don't have the correct crimpers. Instead of using the needlenose pliers above the fulcrum point, use the area just below the fulcrum point. A tremendous amount of pressure can be achieved when using the area just below the fulcrum point. So much that you must be careful you don't totally flatten or smash the connector. It won't be a mil spec crimp, but it just may get you a useable connection. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "Repeater-Builder" on the web. [Repeater-Builder] carrier drop pulse
Here is one for you guru's and BMOC problem solvers. Must admit there are a lot of good ones in this group. A 2 meter repeater 15 miles away using a Mastr2 PLL exciter emits a carrier drop pulse of about 500 ms in duration on a frequency 225 khz down from the repeaters xmit freq. Unfortunately this pulse is on the output of another repeater I continuously monitor. The repeater trustee is very knowledgeable and cooperative and is attempting to solve this problem. He did say the PLL is not quite 5 volts but otherwise seems to work well. The drop pulse on COR is definitely coming from the exciter and can be observed on a SA with PA installed and removed. It was replaced with another exciter and the second exciter is doing exactly the same thing. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "Repeater-Builder" on the web. If you give me a FAX number or snail mail info I can send the information to you. It won't look pretty or clear because is will be a fax or Xerox of a fax. Mine was a model C that was changed to model B and alignment went very well. It was not necessary to change cable lengths. You must be careful about the null tuning capacitors. They are very fragile plus expensive and easily broken. They are also available. Note the low side loops are not the same length as the high side so don't switch them around. Re: [Repeater-Builder] base station power supply/relay problem
Lawdog14 with the sticky relay switching over to or from battery backup. This is going to sound crazy but you should try it before you laugh. I solved many a relay problem by sticking a thin piece of paper between the soft iron core of the coil and the clapper of the relay. Sometimes the soft iron core becomes slightly magnetized and won't pull in or release the clapper properly. A thin piece of paper covering the iron core of the coil will change the magnetic flux and allow the relay to operate as it should. I repaired about 500 Apple Laserwriter II laser printers with this method, by inserting an Avery sticky label attached to the soft iron coil core, The printers were intermittently indexing on the wrong line when printing. Bad news when printing on forms. Second thing to try is to make sure a fine piece of metal such as a file shaving is not magnetized on the soft iron core When the coil is energized the metal flake changes position and prevents proper control of the moveable clapper plate. Please no boos from the BMOC. Gary K2UQ Yahoo! Crank power pot back down, turn it up to 90 watts again and it will run 90 watts all day until you unkey driver again. (using .5 watt HT for testing). Unit had the typical circuit board break on output pin to filter board. Repaired same. Unit also pulses rf power badly and can see amplitude pulse on analyzer. No spurs on sidebands. [Repeater-Builder] Micor Mobile 110 watt amp
Kevin, Just got a Micor mobile repeater going. Was planning on running 110 watt amp around 65 watts. Installed a 120 vac squirrel cage fan right next to side heatsink. It is controlled via thermo switch mounted inside radio on heatsink casting. This fan nearly blows the paint off the heatsink fins. Also drilled 4 1/4 inch holes between heatsink fins to allow some forced air to enter radio and pass over power amp transistors. Did someone say to run 110 watt amp at full bore and to keep high capacity fan on it because PA is temp controlled? Is this ok to do this? I drive a 12 volt relay with mine, then I can control anything with relay contacts. Not bad price $6.85 each. Part No 67F040 (40 deg C). You might want a little higher trip point. Purchased from Sager Electronics, Middleboro, Ma <508 947->. Am presently installing one on the inside of the heatsink in a Moto Micor Mobile repeater, near the power output transistors. Also try Jim Breuer at Airpax Corp in Frederick, Md phone 240-379-1346 or www.airpax.net. I also install them in Astron supplies. Mount it inside the Astron between the two power transistors on heatsink. I use the screw that holds the standoff for the equalizing resistors. One on each side. I call the controller the fortune cookie controller because it lies to me by saying it accepted the code but it really didn't. First off, don't be afraid to do a reset on the Micro Processor. Its a pain doing everything over again but it's good for you because it taxes the mind. Once started, don't stop in the programming process. There might be a little timer in there that goes to sleep if you stop mid stream and continue a few minutes later. There are two different resets for the micro P. When doing, leave ground lead on reset pin for few seconds. Don't just ground it and think everything is empty. A cheat sheet is a good idea. Again, are you sure your Table is correct for the micro P Rev you have? He changed some codes from En/Dis to a separate sel code for En and Dis. Ron is a very nice person. You give him a call in Florida and he will be glad to help you. One very important thing is to be absolutely sure your Touch Tones are correct and the encoding radio is on frequency. I have trouble with the D codes. The controller accepts by giving the RR but it didn't really accept it. Don't forget the 3 second or longer pause required between Programming Enable 1 and Programming Enable 2. When programming, everything must be perfect. If you are a little more specific I might be able to help. Am willing to try. Kevin I apologize for the bandwidth. If this is too much, holler. Gary K2UQ Trenton, NJ [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] RC 1000 Controller
The Ron Wright RC1000 is a little tricky. Make sure you have the correct Control & Program Select Code List (Table 15.1) for the Revision of your controller. You should use the table that is in the book that came with the controller. They are all different. I have a number of these RC1000 and they drove me nuts until I finally got the correct Table 15.1. Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] so we don't burn up bandwidth and I will try to help you get the thing to program correctly. Tell me the "sel codes" your having trouble with. After I got it fairly well figured out, its a pretty nice little controller for the price. Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Retuning of Sinclair I2113A Isolator
Larry -Re Isolator rework. I am by far no expert on any of this stuff but a simple phonecall to the manufacturer of the particular brand Isolator/Circulator might be the best thing to do. Even if the manufacturer of a particular item may have gone belly up, those in the trade usually know what to do and who can do what to other manufacturers products. I personally think its a little beetle inside the box running around in a circle squirting rf out certain ports is how it works. (Sic)... Gary K2UQ Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Retuning of Sinclair I2113A Isolator
I agree with Eric WB6FLY to return unit to Sincair for factory adjustment and modification. My RFS/Celwave Model PCC-150B was on 158.1 Mhz and I had it factory retuned to 147 band. Cost of factory mod was well worth the $125 plus shipping. They retuned, replaced a 6T coil, adjusted coil spacing, reglued some poles, modified filter, reset output tap .100 inch. and included some nice plots. Rolling your own on these items isn't the way to go. Too much black magic. Crack a magnet or something as its all over. Gary K2UQ Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] Micor Mobile ckt bd ID
Please identify this circuit board TLD 8491A-3. Run up as follows: TLD4081A1 4 channel exciter TLD 8491 A-3 ??? TFD 6111A Bandpass Filter TLD 1602A 45 Watt Power Amp TFD 1601A Harmonic Filter The ??? TLD8491A-3 board has 8 tuning slugs in cans L1401 thru L1408 It also has a miniature relay. Power amp not defective because it gives proper output being driven with HT thru bandpass filter input. When I bypass phantom TLD 8491A-3 and drive PA with exciter board I only get 10 watts out of PA. Phantom TLD 8491A-3 is not listed in either of my two manuals. Radio is Micor mobile Canadian MX43RTA 132 - 150.8 mhz Could phantom board be a buffer for exciter because of wide spread freqs? Would like to replace board. Future plans to bypass internal PA and drive external 100 watt pa so I might need a little extra mw drive power. Would like that extra 3db. Thank you..Gary K2UQ Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Has any one used a DB-228
Request for guidance on a DB228I have a DB228 antenna designed for 2 meters. Needed is the proper mounting hardware/ mounting instructions and some technical info on it. A minor problem exists where the coax connects to the dipole elements set screws being rusty and about half require replacement to put the antenna back in long term working condition. I mounted it on a pole for testing. SWR and noise bridge very good. It is an impressive antenna. Would love to have it on a tower. Its too much for me to do alone. If anyone has knowledge on the DB-228, especially how to mount it professionally, please let me know. I did contact a supplier the other day and they said they couldn't help because they are only export orientated. Thought about splitting it into two antennas but it would be a waste of a honker antenna. Gary K2UQ Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Simpson meters??
Also might want to try Sunshine Scientific in Philadelphia, Pa. They repaired our Simpson meters for us. Don't know if they still do or not though. I do have some Simpson manuals for the 260 and 269 series meters. If you can tell me what scale went south I might be able to tell you the value or might even have one. Contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Bet its the Rx1 . Look in bottom center of front panel glass to find correct series. Series, ID is very important to determine correct value of resistor I also have a couple broken meters for spare parts. There ain't nothin' like a needle (meter that is). Put Simpson Meter in Subject so I don't think its SPAM. Gary K2UQ Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] Isolator/Circulator retune
Purchased a nice RFS Systems model PCC150-B off E-Bay set for 158.1 mhz. Sent it to factory for realignment to 2 meter band. Required test for magnet and reglue, replacement of a coil and re adjustment, modification of filter, reset isolator output trap. Cost was $125 plus shipping back in May 2001. One of my smarter moves. Did not attempt to touch it with my VOM, grid dip osc, vise grips and hammer. Definitely a factory required job. Gary K2UQ Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] IFR 1500 manual
Bob - NO6B, Wow ! A manual for a A7550 goes for $540 ? Good grief ! Thats terrible. The person that stated the $125 price tag for a IFR1200 manual was Eric Lemmon WB6FLY. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The price of manuals is getting out of control. Of course the size of some manuals are getting out of size too. Some must be picked up with a fork lift truck. I am still looking for a operating manual for a IFR1500. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Telewave TWPC-1005-1 (Was DCI Band Pass Filter)
Eric, Thank you for the explanation of the TWPC-4508-2 bandpass filter and its application. This is the way people like me who have been playing with this stuff gets straight info on how things really work without spending wasted hours at the repeater site. I thought this filter could be hooked either as a pass or notch cavity. The FM broadcast station is very close to my 2 meter repeater antenna. I thought proper approach would be put FM TWPC-1005-1 cavity in my Rx side of my duplexer to notch out FM station. Or, should I put a DCI filter in line someplace. Or add a pass cavity on Rx side. What happens to the RF rejection on a filter such as a DCI for 2 meters when the freq you want to reject is say 46.205 mhz away from 2 meter repeater input. How much attenuation does a filter such as a DCI provide at these far away freqs? I don't want to be boring for those who are in the know. But I am aware there is a lot of good knowledge here. Not everyone tuned into this reflector is an expert. That's why many are here to help us guys learn. Thanks, Gary K2UQ Yahoo!
