[Repeater-Builder] Re: Dropping the Autopatch--Keep 911
Larry, I would first reach out to the public safety entity that manages the PSAP/911 system where the repeater is physically located. If they are OK with you using an unactivated cellphone, there are several ways to accomplish what you want. The terms relevant to the PSAP staff are UN-INITIALIZED and NON-INITIALIZED phones. Both are going to cause inaccurate data to be displays at the PSAP.It's several degrees worse then trying to explain you are on a phone patch when calling 911. * Un-initialized phones are wireless phones that were activated at one time with a service plan and call back number. Previous user's information may still appear when calling 9-1-1. * Non-initialized phones have never been activated for service. These phones may be purchased off the shelf. NI phones will display wholly random information depending on who made the phone. If you end up using a current production cellphone, Telular http://www.telular.com/ makes a device that provides a standard RJ-11 PSTN interface. There are other manufacturers, but I am not sure they are available to the end use. The repeater is current on all software, and the mobiles we use are pretty close to current. P25 recovered audio is nowhere near as legible as 12.5 analog. Fact of life. That being said, the IAFC did a study on P25 technology. They sought input from end users and performed tests under fire ground conditions. [Repeater-Builder] Re: Decibel dipole array sweeps
Folks, I have the received plenty of information on dimensions via email. Thanks! Despite the increase in weight, I am considering using 6016-T6 rod for the elements, rather then tubing. I know that rod can be bent without kinking on a tight radius. It also welds a lot easier then thin wall tubing. The other option is to laser or water jet cut the elements out of plate, instead of being bent from round stock. That being said, will the element being square affect the pattern? The total cross section can be engineered to remain the same (circle vs square). The additional rigidity eliminate the need for the insulator between the driven element and the dipole bracket. I do have a concern re using a tin plated copper terminal on a copper center conductor, bolted to an aluminum mast/element with a stainless steel mechanical fastener. Anyone have access to stainless steel lugs that can be compression crimped (with real tooling, not a pair of pliers) that are for a #10 stud and fit the center conductor of the coax? Martin /W2RWJ

[Repeater-Builder] Mobile Repeater
I was asked by a Technical Rescue group to help them set up a repeater for a mobile command post they are building. The chassis is MCI bus, so it's not going off road. Here's the notes: * The are licensed in commercial UHF. * The bus has both 12V and 24V available from 2 different battery sets * The have access to a commercial style rack with shock mounts * Their hand-held radios are all HT1250, multiple varients. Some of the members have opted to install Motorola Spectra radios in their POV. * The have access to an MTR2000 station and a Kenwood TKR850 from a local car dealership. The can pick either, the other goes to another non-profit. * The antenna is an looks like an RFS BA1012 on a 20' push up pole (they are attempting to obtain a 60' Wilburt mast from a television station) I'm leaning toward the MTR2000 as has better specs and it a high power unit (will not require an external PA). Is there something I am missing in pointing them at the MTR station? Martin

System will run mixed-mode (NB/FM and P25) Our VHF UHF systems use Sinclair cavities and IMD panels with great results. However, I need to provide multiple sources. [Repeater-Builder] Bird 6733 Load Modification
Just finished adding a upgrade to my dummy load. I had picked up a DA-458/URM (Bird 6733) a while back. I mounted it on the wall in the shack with a coax jumper over to the bench. The addition was a solenoid valve and a Klixon 4344 thermostat mounted on the fin. When the fin temperature hit 120 degrees, it opens the valve and runs domestic water through the heat sink. The water is regulated to 30 PSI to avoid damage to the loop in the 6733. 200W for 15 minutes did not even get the 6733 warm enough to activate the klixon. I had to test it by aiming a heat gun at the sensor.

Bernie, I made 2 out of 3/4 polycarbonate rod. Length is about 16 long. The tip is a 1/4-20 brass bolt with the head cut off and filed to a rounded tip. I tapped the the end of the rod to fit the bolt. The grounding jumper is 4' long made 1/2 braid from Surplus Center with a big muller clamp. I folded the braid in half width-wise and covered with heat shrink tubing. The braid is silver soldered to the bolt. Does any one know where I can obtain a fiberglass chicken stick? I had one at Collins Radio that was about a foot long, 1/4 inch in diameter and would like to obtain the same. It is sure a lot safer probing around the anode of a Klystron with a chicken stick than a metal screwdriver.
