Re: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors
Bob: I think that I have a number of the connectors that you need. Correct me if I am wrong, but the jumpers that you want come in two sizes on the mastr II. They both have rca connectors on one and a chassis so239 on the other end for the rf output. If you think that these are the right jumpers let me know how many and which one(s) that you need and I would be glad to send them to you . 73's David K8ELS - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, May 28, 2006 12:43 AM Subject: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors My stock of RF RCA connectors (the ones used for carrying RF inside GE MVPs, Mastr IIs etc.) has run dry, I haven't seen any at our local swap meets. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors
OK, so how is an RF RCA connector different from a regular RCA connector? I do know I've seen them with shorter-than-normal center pins; I have one short cable with an SO-239 on one end and a short RCA plug on the other that came out of either an old tube GE or Motorola radio. The old Sensicon receivers had an RCA jack for the RF input, and as I recall there was something at the bottom that prevented a full-length RCA plug from fully seating itself. If that's the only difference, maybe you could just grind the center terminal down after soldering it. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors
There should be a difference in the dielectric quality. In audio any old dielectric will be fine as the upper frequency to be passed is 20 KHz or so. For RF you need a better dielectric to cut down on attenuation. 73 Glenn WB4UIV At 07:55 AM 05/28/06, you wrote: OK, so how is an RF RCA connector different from a regular RCA connector? Shortening Phono plug center pinreal easy. Findappropriate sizedrill bit that fits into center pin of phono plug. Mount drill bit horizontally in your bench vise. Adjust phono plug on drill bit until your happy with center pin length. Use a jewelers sawto cut unwanted center pin length off. Do not cut drill bit. Only use it as a length guide and support. Smooth and bevel new edge with a real fine file. Presto ! Do a bunch of them in one sitting then put them in a special bag labeled phono plug shorty's. Then do as I do, misplace the bag, never to be found again. Gary K2UQ YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "Repeater-Builder" on the web. RE: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors
Many years ago, one of the major connector manufacturers (Amphenol?) made an RCA plug that was RF Quality. It was made of tinned brass, and it had an extended sleeve for soldering the shields of RG-142 or RG-400 coax. It also had a ceramic insulating disk in place of the lossy phenolic disk normally used in cheap RCA plugs. Hamtronics sells special RCA plugs that have a right-angle cover that folds over the cable and can be soldered. Dunno how they compare to the plugs with ceramic or Teflon insulators. 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY - Original Message - From: Bob M. Thanks, Eric for replying to the question asked by Bob. It amazes me how often questions go unanswered here, yet volumes of rhetoric are published. YAHOO! RE: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors
Geez, lots of discussion, but nobody answered the question. RF Connection (www.therfc.com) has RF-grade RCA males, standard solder-on type (no strain relief or anything). Short center pin, silver plated, Teflon dielectric. If you can't find them on the web site, call and ask for Joel and tell him what you need, he'll know what you're talking about. --- Jeff -Original Message- From: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, May 28, 2006 12:44 AM To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Subject: [Repeater-Builder] Need source for RF RCA connectors My stock of RF RCA connectors (the ones used for carrying RF inside GE MVPs, Mastr IIs etc.) has run dry, I haven't seen any at our local swap meets. I wouldn't say that no one answered the question. Two of made a similar suggestion, you make the third. But you are correct that the question did get passed over in favor of pontification. As usual your contributions to this forum are most valued. To everyone else: my apologies for not fully describing what I was looking for; guess I thought everyone would know when I said RF RCA made reference to the innards of the G.E. radios that use plastic molded versions of those connectors (I think Eric got it right too, though I think I'll stay clear of Hamtronics as I've never known any of their stuff to meet spec out of the box (doesn't mean it's bad, just has to be fully checked out first I don't have time for that now)). I don't care how long the center pin is, as I just cut it down to whatever works. What I DO need is a male RCA connector such that the center conductor of RG-223 goes up inside the hollow center pin of the connector, where it is soldered, the outer conductor is all metal has no tail like your typical audio connector. The shield simply fans over the back of the connector is soldered down to same. I've previously checked these connectors had very good results. I almost broke out the digicam to snap a pic of my last connector, but thought nah, you guys know what I'm talking about. Next time, pics! Bob NO6B Yahoo! I had sample from Switchcraft of a nice right angle rca plug. I tried it in a GE mastr ii repeater and it worked just fine.
