Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Album art question re directory levels

2012-01-30 Thread ifo

You may also be interested in using the advanced options for cover art,
see Help - Technical information - Artwork Setup - Technical details
in your LMS.

In your case you would probably set a common path for all cover art and
a filename pattern in the first box which will find the cover for the
current album.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Album art question re directory levels

2012-01-09 Thread paulgj

Yes, I figured the Windows shortcuts were a long shot but I was in
experimentation mode.

Yes, If I create symbolic links to the art then the server picks it up
and displays the art properly. When I list the directory contents,
instead of seeing a folder.jpg of the original size (in this case 28737
bytes), I see the size of the link which turns out to be 90 bytes (see
image below).

Still a PITA to fiddle around on the command line but at least now
known to work. Thanks for the tip!

You'd better use relative pathnames, so that your soft links will still
be valid if you move your music from /home/paul/data/music to
elsewhere.

Using aubuti's example:
cd /Miles Davis/Complete Live Nickel/Disc 2 - Set 2
ln -s ../Disc 2 - Set 1/folder.jpg .

Right, that's the way symlinks normally work.

No problem, and glad you got something working. And since you rejected
the two easier gui solutions -- (a) making a copy of folder.jpg or (b)
telling LMS to treat the two discs as a single album -- to some degree
you chose this PITA. :-)

Thanks for that tip, I'm fairly new to Linux so my sole use of relative
pathnames is using cd .. to go back one level.

The way I have this album set up using the LMS Single Album option
wouldn't work as I want to have each set have it's own different Album
Name.

I haven't ruled out just making a simple copy of the album art but it's
good to know my options.

BTW what is the optimum size for album art? I normally keep mine at
300x300 pixels or less.

Fair enough. I vary how I do it depending on the album, so I can
certainly see arguments for each way.

There's no universal optimum except not too big, because sometimes
large art files clog the scanner. I usually use 500x500, and I wouldn't
go for less than 300x300. Part of the decision depends on what you use
to view the art. For example, you'll want bigger files if you're using
iPeng on an iPad or the equivalent on an Android tablet. Or if you
think someday you may want to use one of those. Or if you think someday
you may want to show the album art on a 40-inch LCD tv (some do).

Thanks for the info, I don't use an iPad or other graphical interface
right now other than the web interface and the Touch itself. I think
using an iPad or Tablet is the way to go though so I might upgrade my
album art.

According to your sig your server is running Ubuntu, so it's not
surprising to me that Windows shortcuts wouldn't work. Why would Ubuntu
follow a Windows shortcut?

On the other hand, symbolic links may well work. Besides the obvious
advantage of being something that Ubuntu understands, they can also
have the same name as the file you're trying to link (ie, cover.jpg or
folder.jpg). This is in contrast to Windows shortcuts, which generally
tack on a .lnk extension.

Assuming that the paths you gave in your original post are the real
paths, see if the following works. Pay attention to the quotation
marks/inverted commas, and remember to do a full clear and rescan
afterwards.

cd /Miles Davis/Complete Live Nickel/Disc 2 - Set 2
ln -s /Miles Davis/Complete Live Nickel/Disc 2 - Set 1/folder.jpg
folder.jpg

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Album art question re directory levels

2012-01-07 Thread MrSinatra

interesting question, would a shortcut in one folder pointing to a
folder.jpg file in another folder work? let us know. but while not as
large, its still something of a kludge, as it creates another file.

personally, i think its not worth worrying about, since most album art
files aren't too big size wise. i actually keep a dupe in every
folder, in case folder.jpg gets overwritten or something.

I think it would be a cool feature though to add the ability to look
higher in the folder structure for album art.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Album art question re directory levels

2012-01-06 Thread aubuti

If you (1) tell LMS to treat multi-disc albums as a single album
(somewhere in the LMS settings, I forget exactly where), (2) ensure
that the ALBUM tags are perfectly identical for all tracks in the
album, and (3) use the DISCNUMBER tag to indicate which tracks are from
which disc, then you only need to have the album art in one of the
folders.

Alternatively, you could put all the tracks in the same folder, using
the same ALBUM tags and numbering the tracks sequentially.

If either of those solutions present problems for you -- for example,
if you like LMS reporting them as separate discs -- then you need to
make a second copy of the cover art. I really wouldn't worry too much
about wasted space when you're comparing an extra 20-50KB for another
copy of the album art against 500-600MB of a double CD album.

Thanks, I agree it's no big deal space wise but I tend to be anal about
duplicate files. Maybe I will try putting shortcuts in the lower level
folders and see if LMS picks them up.
