No proxy or vpn. Go through a router with NAT and SPI. I googled it and
many innocent people have same problem with the site. Seems to block
whole countries or ranges of IP addrs.

Are you using a proxy or VPN or maybe some overly protective browser
plugins? I've never had an issue.

I found that Album Art Exchange stopped working for me a while back. It was
good whilst it lasted, but they've put up some firewall software that for some
reason is very over zealous and prevents many people from accessing the site
any more. I get "www.albumartexchange.com is protected by Blocked.com."

I found a similar site called fanart.tv, which seems to be a reasonable source
for good quality (1000x1000) artwork. Failing that, I search discogs.com or
eCover, and then search using google image.

Yes, take your time and do it right. Rip to lossless, and spend the time
to get your metadata and artwork right to begin with. metadata almost
always requires a bit of fiddling to match your own system, organization
scheme, etc. Regarding EAC being only trustworthy ripping software, I
would only add that the gurus over at hydrogenaud.io forums (one of the
few digital music forums I trust) would generally agree with you, with
the exception being that they would say that "EAC and dbpoweramp are the
only windows rippers I would trust." More recently they might add
CUETOOLS to that list. Key is to use a secure ripper that uses the
ACCURATERIP database. dbpoweramp is not better in this regard (although
its author is the inventor/manager of the ACCURATERIP database matching
approach), it is simply a bit more user friendly. And EAC shouldn't be
free. Any serious user of EAC should be donating at least $40 to the
authors of that program. I use mp3tag for a lot of post rip tagging.
It's "free" but I donate to the author about once a year. There is no
free lunch. If we don't support the software we want, we'll be left with
stuff that is not as good!

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Help for the Beginner

2014-10-06 Thread Alasdair Macdonald
I don't know anything about "bogus" guides, and I've only had occasion
to set up EAC once or twice in the past 5 years or so, but the guide
referenced looked OK to me (a non-exhaustive review). It covers the
points that I would consider to be the most important, and since it
documents every setting that it considers to be important (albeit
rather a lot of them), I see no reason to recommend a non-free
software.

I'd suggest installing EAC and using the guide in question. It should
be clear within the first few rips if everything is working
satisfactorily.

I spent the best part of a year ripping my CD collection. For some of
us there's no avoiding the fact that it will take a long time to
complete; EAC is the *only* ripping software that I would trust.

I didn't see recommended in a thread at hydrogenaud.io forums if it

dbpoweramp is not necessarily faster (it can be in some cases). It is
just easier to setup and use and a bit more automated. There are a lot
of bogus (incorrect) EAC setup guides floating around the internet and
it requires more work in setting up properly. This said, dbpoweramp and
EAC are both considered the best SECURE rippers to use when on a windows
machine.

Well, I'm not sure if my first post did deserved this wonderful
responses or not. There are lots of internet communities but few of them
has helpful members. Thank you for your help.

So,

-> Apparently Google Play don't have that service in my country. Thank
you for the advice though.

-> I downloaded and start processing with the MusicBrainz Picard. My
first target is organizing my Jazz&Blues albums, which are fairly in
good shape tag-wise. MusicBrainz Picard finds most of the albums but not
all the time it saves data on the original file. I don't know the
reason, but instead of green ticks I get red "fail" marks on the tracks
on some albums.

-> As I said, I'm not experienced on ripping and I came to EAC with the
suggestion of a friend. I haven't installed it yet, just searching. As I
understand from the replies, dbpoweramp is a faster solution. If this is
so, I can pay for it.

-> I'm keeping my files on a Synology NAS. So no worries about back-ups.

and select what satisfies you.
I don't embed album art in flacs but store it as cover.jpg in the album

EAC will do a very good job, but it may take you a while to learn to use
it optimally. You should make sure you enable, configure and use
AccurateRip in EAC. What I generally do is use burst mode to rip a CD
very quickly, then generate and check the log file to see whether there
has been AccurateRip verification of all tracks. If not, I re-rip those
tracks again using secure mode. You'll have to do this manually in EAC -
checking the logs, changing the ripping method. Dbpoweramp does it
automatically. There is also 'Easy Audio Copy'
(http://www.easyaudiocopy.com/), from the same programmer as EAC, which
is even simpler to use than dbpoweramp, and uses pretty much the same
methodology: ripping in burst mode, checking AR, falling back to the
slower secure mode if there's no verification, all automatically. It too
can retrieve metadata from a quality source and can retrieve album
artwork.

But if you want really good album art, you're much better off finding it
yourself manually, even though the process can be time-consuming. A
great resource is the 'AlbumArtExchange' (albumartexchange.com). If you
don't find something there, try using Google's Image Search.

And...

If you are going to go through the time and effort of ripping your CDs,
go ahead and create lossless tracks (FLAC), not MP3s. Hard disc space is
cheap these days and you can always use something like foobar2000 to
easily convert the FLACs to lossy format as needed for mobile devices.

I would strongly recommend dBpoweramp for ripping. You can include album
art as part of the rip which is a great timesaver. Mp3rip is great for
implementing the changes you wish you had thought of when originally
ripping!

I have also found it great to be able to add multiple entries to fields
like Genre, separated by a semi-colon. These then show up separately in
Squeezebox. Just watch out - this can take over your life!

The above advice should give you a fine start on your task of digitizing
your music library.

One thing that I did not see mentioned is that you should make several
copies of the digitized library. Backups are critical as sooner or later
the drive/drives it is on will fail. You are going to expend a great
deal of time to do this correctly and do not want to start over from
square one when a drive fails.

Develop a system which includes making corrections, and stick to it as
well as you can.

Have fun !

But basically rip with EAC or dBpower amp or Rubyripper .

I tend to use puddletag on Linux its similar to mp3tag but actually
easier to use .

Decent organisation /artist/album/song1.

Be consistent with tagging (I’m not historically i learned as i did it )
on flac files use only vorbis comments (flac tags ) some software offers
to also write both id3v1 and id3bv2 mpeg tags to the file (mp3 tags ) to
the files .
This sorta works if the information is consistent within the multiple
tags set in one file ,but not always ,this can usually create a rather
messy library if the content differ in the tag sets.

Also some software also generate a cue and an m3u file in the directory
of the album I find these more problematic than they are useful so
that’s not needed IMO . Some advanced user finds those usefull ,but if
you don’t know what they are your probably don’t need them .

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Help for the Beginner

2014-10-04 Thread wortgefecht

The most important thing imho is, that you come up with your own
taxonomy for genres: tag all songs with the genre *you* would file them
under in a record store. Second, for the flacs: create single files for
each song; albums in one file (flac+cue) is--at least for
me--unpractical.

If your mp3s are in a bad shape tag-wise (i.e. never cared to tag them
until now and they are not all from the same source, say Apple/Google
etc.), I would suggest that you run your whole collection through
MusicBrainz Picard (https://musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBrainz_Picard)
before you start tagging them manually. Picard can add tags, group
albums, move them to a folder structure you define (i.e.
Artist/Year-Album) and rename all files coherently. Of course you will
have to go through them manually later, but Picard can do small wonders
to a previously messy collection.

Oh, and one last tip: If you have low quality mp3s (192 and lower), get
yourself a free account with Google Play Music, upload those files (you
can upload up to 20.000 songs) to it and then download them again.
Google replaces low quality mp3s in most cases with 256 or even VBR
ones--for free.

Get EAC setup properly and it will automatically rip into a decent
folder structure. I.e. artist/album/track.FLAC

MP3tag is one of the best tagging apps I've tried.

While I've also used EAC and MP3tag for this task I'd be tempted to pay
for DBPoweramp if I was doing it again.
