[RDD] Importing files from a Rivendell Dropbox
I've set up Rivendell dropboxes for my friends Radio Station. Running Lubuntu 14.04 Rivendell v 2.9.3 His machine is also identical specs to mine. Apart from having more ram and 20 thousand songs in the database. My system has about half of that. I've made shared folders that his production machine saves files to (using samba). These shared folders are dropboxs for a series of carts in his system. The problem we are having with his system is Files not importing... deleting the existing audio and leaving an empty cart. We then have to manually import which sometimes works. We get an Audio Error OK... but the file has imported. The Audio carts are about 52 minutes long (128k mp3) ... should I make them half that length? Any thoughts Geoff Barkman ___ Rivendell-dev mailing list Rivendell-dev@lists.rivendellaudio.org http://caspian.paravelsystems.com/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev

Re: [RDD] Sound card question
Hi Lorne I've been using Lubuntu 14.04 and haven't had any problems with Pulse audio and Rivendell 2.93 on it. I've found the Lxde desktop seems to run well with rivendell. No annoying unity desktop... so it runs fast. I've tried remastering it to make a new RRAbuntu live cd but thats a wee way off coming to fruition. Lots of scripts needed to automate the set up. Having to log out to add the user to the rivendell and audio groups is a bit of a pain. But its a spare time project so I might get time over my christmas/summer break in December January this year. Re: [RDD] Sound card question
To further what Goeff said... I run Ubuntu 10.04 and yes - it does like swapping around sound cards. PCI can be hard coded, but with USB - even hard coded - I've found that it'll still from time to time swap around the values for no reason that I can find. Most of the time it works as expected, but every so often it doesn't. As a result I've just taken the view of avoiding USB audio cards for all but basic consumer use. The other thing with Ubuntu - by default it has PulseAudio installed and enabled. Unless you have a reason to keep it around (in which case, you can jump through some hoops to make it work with JackAudio) then disable the thing - it'll only cause you grief (and if it is using your audio card(s), that may be why you can't get audio to play) To learn how to kill it, have a look at: http://rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/Ubuntu_-_No_sound/sound_card_in_Rivendell_after_setup > > Hi Jason > I think most m-audio cards should work. > Ubuntu will probably know your sound card is there. > In a terminal type this. > cat /proc/asound/modules > > Sound Cards start at 0 and a second card would be card 1 etc > > You should get all your cards listed. > If the m-audio shows up there. > You might have to add lines for the second card in the /etc/asound.conf file. > for example... > pcm.rd1 { > type hw > card 1 > } > ctl.rd1 { > type hw > card 1 > } > > Now Ubuntu has a reputation for swapping cards around on subsequent > reboots. Re: [RDD] Sound card question
Hi Jason I think most m-audio cards should work. Ubuntu will probably know your sound card is there. In a terminal type this. cat /proc/asound/modules Sound Cards start at 0 and a second card would be card 1 etc You should get all your cards listed. If the m-audio shows up there. You might have to add lines for the second card in the /etc/asound.conf file. for example... pcm.rd1 { type hw card 1 } ctl.rd1 { type hw card 1 } Now Ubuntu has a reputation for swapping cards around on subsequent reboots. So you may need to "hard code" in sound card values into the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. We can help you set that up if needed. I hope this helps you. Hi all, I deployed Rivendell for production a couple of months ago and I've been very happy with it. Production install is currently on an old mac mini running Ubuntu 12.04. Sorry to ask what is probably a common question but I'm a newcomer to Linux when it comes to audio support and configuration. Are there any recommended external audio interfaces that are known to work on linux and with Rivendell? Or recommended PCI sound cards? I've tried a few external audio interfaces I had in the shop, including two M-Audio interfaces and an Akai interface without any luck. In all cases I could not get linux to recognize the interfaces at all, and could not find drivers for them. I know this is not a rivendell question per se but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Re: [RDD] Hybrid /var/snd: write remotely, read locally
Hi, I accidentally kind of did this with a straight forward nfs mount. The machine was originally stand alone and I converted it to a remote /var/snd in the usual way. One random day later, the network cable fell out and I only noticed when the Internet didn't work. Airplay reverted back to the local /var/snd without me realising. I think it glitched when the network dropped but then it skipped to the next cart and was "fine". The biggest headache for me was finding a way to have a synced local MySQL, you can do file systems with lots of fault tollerant systems (e.g. glusterFS and many others). Mariadb clustering looks interesting but I think that needs innodb for everything. I am not looking to start an MP2 / MP3 debate, but I have always found that MP2's sound a whole lot better then MP3's, provided the source that the file is compressed from is original uncompressed audio. Furthermore it has been shown that mp2's (when compressed from a raw / uncompressed audio format) get through a broadcast audio chain a lot cleaner then mp3's. Having said that, storage is cheap now days. Your best performance will be uncompressed raw / PCM audio (or as some call it, WAV - even though .wav is in reality just a container for audio) Lorne Tyndale ___ Rivendell-dev mailing list Rivendell-dev@lists.rivendellaudio.org http://caspian.paravelsystems.com/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev
[RDD] Missed GPI
Hello, I'm trying to find an elegant way to skip a cart if a GPI is missed. This is how it works out. The News Credit plays at the top of the hour then stops after a macro turns the news fader on, it also enables a GPI for sports. A sports credit is due to be received in the next 4 minutes which will play a logged sports credit cart. If the GPI is missed/not received, and the weather GPI is received, I want that GPI to skip the sports credit and move to the weather cart. I looked at PL ! to skip the sports cart but isn't relative to current position. I looked at MN ! to skip the sports cart but again isn't relative to current position. I looked at PB ! (push next) but that only applies to the main log, not any aux logs, and I run 3. The idea would be, once the News Theme has played, will wait for 2 different GPIs. Sports GPI and Weather GPI. If the Sports GPI is received it will play the sports credit. If the Weather GPI is received before the Sports GPI it will skip the logged sports credit, and proceed from the weather credit. I need to have the Sports Credit logged by my traffic system, so it can be billed. I thought about having my traffic system schedule a macro instead of a cart, or have the sports credit built into a macro, but again, I need to be able to skip that. I thought about having a macro play from the panel, but again, I need it to be scheduled, so I can bill it. My current thought uses hard time markers. News credit is hard timed to ~:00:00.00. Macro opens News, enables GPI for Sports. Hard Time Marker at ~:04:15.0 skips the Sports if it hasn't played. (Weather GPI is due at ~:04:30.0) Hard Time Marker at ~:04:15.0 also disables Sports GPI and waits for Weather GPI. [RDD] Hybrid /var/snd: write remotely, read locally

So far, so good: rsync can do the job. Now the question: is it possible to tell Rivendell to read locally and write (rdimport) remotely? This would be how imagine results. I import songs from the client and rdimport push them into the server. Rsync daemon synchronize server and client as soon as remote folder is modified (upload or delete of file). VT || SONG|| The VT won't go further to the right of the song (or something else) start. (What are archers?...) Re: [RDD] How to change import bitrate?
However consider that rdimport convert your imported music into plain wave first. In that stage it operates with frequency resolution 44.1kHz <-> 48kHz (according to your source and target settings) and normalization (-13 dBFS is the default). For this reason original and imported audio file will probably be quite different, therefore extra bitrate is not a waste of hd space (in my opinion). Moreover consider that Rivendell chooses mp2 as compressing coding, and it is quite different compared to mp3. Mp3 outperforms mp2 at the same bitrate, so from a theoretical point of view your imported mp3@256kbps will probably sound even "better" than imported mp2@384kbps. As always it depends... and it's a matter of what you actually want to achieve.
