   I see my problem, I downloaded disk2! Picked it because it

   However the information I received is helpful.

Dear Bob,
Many packages which used to be part of the standard SL5 repo have
moved to the epel repo in SL6. yumex is one of them.

You need to do

yum install epel-release

and then try "yum install yumex" again. If it still doesn't work,
look at the file /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo and make sure that the
epel repository is enabled.
Eva.

   Yes, that is what I needed. Yumex is installing xfce for me now!

   Thank you much.

Does it need anything nifty happening, like mounting under a specific
SELinux context or using krb5, etc?

   I normally keep Selinux active but other than that it's just a
   local file server on our home LAN, normally accessed from OSX
   and Fedora boxes.

   The SL5 server has been tuning continuously for a couple of
   years without ever missing a beat! I've just built up a

install package

Add port 2049
$ vi /etc/sysconfig/iptables

-A INPUT -p udp --dport 2049 -j ACCEPT

Restart iptables
$ service iptables restart

Start nfs service + survive reboot
$ /etc/init.d/nfs start
$ /etc/init.d/nfslock start
$ chkconfig nfs on

Create a test directory
$ mkdir -p /nfs_test

Edit nfs export file:
$ vi /etc/exports
/nfs_test  *(ro,sync) <== esoteric indicates world accessible

Now export it:
$ exportfs -a

Verify it:
$ exportfs

Go to your client box, and test it. Like so:
$ mount -t nfs server:/nfs_test  /client/mount/point

   Ok, with this I was able to set up a working NFS, which then
   lead me to believe that what I have is working also, a matter of
   establishing confidence! Box7 is able to see files on server

Yum update problem -

2012-10-31 Thread Bob Goodwin - Zuni, Virginia, USA

   I have an NFS server running SL-6?. I don't know how to determine
   the version? I installed it and have been using it without a hitch.

   This morning I ran yum update for the first time in months and after
   downloading 90+ rpms it produced a long list of errors due to
   conflicts, not what I expected?

   I don't usually have a keyboard and monitor attached to it, access
   from a Fedora-17 box when necessary and that's how I did the yum
   update this morning, via ssh. Due to ISP usage limits I need to do
   the update in the wee hours, before 05:00.

You'll need to provide more information. What repositories are

can get you sorted. :)

It's there, but in the epel repository. Go get the
epel-release package from here:

   http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

Or just do:

yum install yum-conf-epel

And you'll get all the needed files for EPEL ... no need to go via the
Fedora wiki any more :)

Then just do: yum groupinstall xfce

That should be it.

Yes, thanks, that eased the pain a lot! Now if I can figure out
how to shange from gnome to xfce. Maybe there's a switchdesk rpm?

Perhaps a page in the CentOS wiki [1] will help you.

   There was a drive /dev/sda that had windows and linux on it, it had
   been used for boot.

   After re-installing a couple of times I finally found the problem,
   simply disabled that drive in the BIOS. Last install leaves me with
   LVM but I guess I can live with that on this computer for now.

   Well I have SL6/3 working pretty much as expected now, however I am
   still forced to use gnome, I have XFCE installed but can't start it
   as long as gnome starts first. In Fedora it was a selection in the
   log-in screen, earlier versions I would do startxfce4, not so here,
   perhaps a limitation of installing from the Live version? Although
   Fedora was installed from a Live spin too. Dunno, it will annoy me
   until I find a way.

   Thanks to all for the help,

It seems to be avalable at the atrpms.net repository: Just run this
to gain access to it:

yum install yum-conf-atrpms
yum info vlc

And review whether you want atrpms active all the time: you can change
the yum yum configuration files for it to say "enabled=0" and disable
default access, if you wish.

On the login screen, first you have to select your user, and _then_
will the menu appear at the bottom in the middle with the selection

won't be any of such menu.

   No, that did not work either, the option is simply missing.

   But, I have been using Fedora for a long time and forgot the
   obvious due to systemd on recent versions where it was easier
   just to use the graphic start screen. The solution is simply to
   set /etc/inittab to level 3 and after rebooting I can now log-in

There are many people on this list who are more knowledgeable than me, but one place you

'man 5 exports' will tell you more than I can.

Update > kernel panic -

2013-02-02 Thread Bob Goodwin - Zuni, Virginia, USA

   I did a yum update via ssh on an SL6 server the other day,
   noticed that it never indicated complete? Yesterday I began to
   have odd problems and after rebooting the server, it wouldn't,
   it complains of a kernel panic. Using SL-Live I've installed

   someone can tell me a better way all I know is to re-install and
   start over. That server has been running for a year or more
   without a problem, usually it's just there, only shut down in a
   power outage and then always restarted without a problem..

   And if I do re-install I would prefer to not use LVM, what
   should I include besides /, boot, swap, and home? I always
   scratch my head when I get to that point ...

   Advice and suggestions needed,

I'm using SL5.8
After a short shutdown today the machine came up with kernel panic (can't find
root).

   It turned out my kernel panic was self inflicted. Apparently I
   shut down before an update finished. To add to the confusion the
   opening screen does not show the alternate kernels you may boot
   to. Once I figured that out I was able to boot to an earlier
   version and remove and replace the damaged kernel, all is well now.

   I did notice that the yum install of the kernel seemed to take
   longer than usual but it did complete eventually?

NFS write problem SL-6 -

2013-02-05 Thread Bob Goodwin - Zuni, Virginia, USA

   I use some applications, e.g. Notecase and Tkremind, that save
   data to an nfs server on the LAN. This is a new SL-6.3

   I mount them with a script, that would be manually I guess.

  NFSv3 or NFSv4?

   NFSv4

Are your command line operations being done by the same user as the Notecase
operations?

Not sure how to answer this but:

 [bobg@box7 ~]$ ll /usr/bin/notecase
   -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 6485784 Nov 25 09:22 /usr/bin/notecase

   [bobg@box7 ~]$ ll /mnt/HOME1/notecase/notecase/stuff.ncd
   -rw-rw-r--. 1 nobody nobody 1168841 Feb  5 13:05
   /mnt/HOME1/notecase/notecase/stuff.ncd

And what are the NFS settings, and the MTU's on the
relevant network ports?

   /etc/fstab (client):

   192.168.1.8:/home//mnt/HOME1/nfs4defaults0 0
   192.168.1.8:/data//mnt/DATA1/nfs4defaults0 0
   192.168.1.48:/SRVR1//mnt/BOX48/nfs4

   /etc/fstab (server):

   # bind mounts

   /home/datanfs4exports/datanonerw,bind0 0

   /home/homenfs4exports/homenonerw,bind0 0

   Not sure where/what/ for MTU's. Ignorance prevails.

you sure do come up with some good questions. :)

i had never given thought to a notification alert until you brought
it up and come to find that it is set in thunderbird's "about:config".

from thunderbird's "main menu" bar, select;

   Edit>  Preferences>  Advanced>  General>  [Config Editor]

in the "about:config" window's "Filter:" bar, enter the word;

   sound

among the "Preference Name", you should see;

   mail.biff.play_sound.url

which is the location path for the ".wav" file to be played.

if you desire, you can add your own ".wav" files there, or supply
your own path for personal files. i do not suggest cat sounds. your
dogs might tear up your computer trying to get to the cat. (GBWG)

you will also see;

   mail.bif.play_sound.type

in my config, it was set "0". i changed this to "1". i now
have an alert sound played when i have email/s arrive.

if you open your internet browser and log to site;

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings

then use  and enter

mail.biff

in search bar, you will find the settings for "mail.biff.*".

hope that helps you and others who want to *hear* when new email/s

   I've got all those settings right as verified by the method you
   suggest. They were set from the GUI, something I have done many
   times and which have always worked out of the box until I hit
   SL6.3. I go one step further with an add-on "Tonequilla" which
   allows me to have recorded voice announcements for users or
   groups via the Thunderbird mail filters, and that is what I
   really need working if I am going to continue to use this, I
   can't come running up a flight of stairs every time Thunderbird
   goes ding-dong, and it doesn't even do that now, no alert sounds
   at all. In fact I don't remember seeing the visual notification
   come up either but I will need to verify that.

   As I said aplay works with the same .wav files, T-bird does not?

   I do appreciate the information about where the configuration
   actually is set though ...

   Thanks,

   Bob

SL6.3 Update problem -

2013-02-08 Thread Bob Goodwin - Zuni, Virginia, USA

   I keep getting an update request however when I run yum I must
   use -- skip broken to get it to run. This is the list it skips,
   libmodplug is the one that produces the pop-up security message.

   Packages skipped because of dependency problems:
libebml-1.2.1-1.el6.x86_64 from epel
libmatroska-1.2.0-1.el6.x86_64 from epel
1:libmodplug-0.8.8.3-2.el6.x86_64 from epel
libupnp-1.6.13-1.el6.x86_64 from epel
