Re: CSOT boron and borax

2009-10-01 Thread Ode Coyote

Boron Overview

Boron is a trace element which has an important influence on both calcium
and magnesium metabolism. Boron is concentrated in the bone, spleen, and
thyroid indicating borons functions in bone metabolism and suggesting a
potential role for boron in hormone metabolism. Boron is thought to be
useful to increase muscle mass; increase muscle strength; maintain bone
density; improve calcium absorption; decrease body fat.

According to the USDA, boron is a trace mineral that helps bones develop
and grow normally. Boron becomes especially important when there is not
enough vitamin D in the diet. Boron may also prevent arthritis in the elderly.

Research has shown that low boron diets have been associated with reduced
testosterone levels and boron supplements have been shown to increase serum
levels of testosterone in postmenopausal women. This finding caused an
increase in boron supplements targeting athletes and bodybuilders for
boosting testosterone levels, strength and muscle mass. However, specific
research on athletes has not yet confirmed this association that boron
alone will boost testosterone.

Dietary Sources: Dried fruits, nuts, dark green leafy vegetables,
applesauce, grape juice, and cooked dried beans and peas. Meat and fish are
poor dietary sources of boron. One mg of boron is found in 1.5 ounces of
raisins or prunes; 2 ounces of almonds or peanuts; 4 ounces of red wine

Dosage: Daily needs for boron probably fall somewhere around 1 mg.

Side Effects: 1-10 mg per day is considered safe, but caution is warranted
at higher intake levels as consumption of 50 mg or more may be linked to
toxicity, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, lethargy, and
diarrhea.

Research Overview

A review of animal and human research on boron yielded the following
information which points to a much more comprehensive view of boron.

Deficiency in boron has been shown to contribute to:
1. Abnormal embryo development
2. Decreased sperm count
3. Ovarian deterioration
4. Damage in reproductive function
5. Decrease in electrical activity in the brain
6. Sub optimal mineral metabolism
7. Poor manual dexterity
8. Impaired hand-eye coordination

Boron supplementation was found to:
1. Increase steroid hormone levels (testosterone) and therefore may be of
interest to athletes

2. Increase bone growth and strength
3. Augment estrogen function and therefore may help prevent atherosclerosis
4. Improve brain function and cognitive functioning
5. Reduce HDL cholesterol
6. Affect thyroid hormone levels
7. Alleviate harmful effects of vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium
deficiency in postmenopausal bone loss

8. Play a role in the prevention of osteoporosis
9. Be of benefit in the treatment of arthritis
10. Prevents calcium loss in postmenopausal women

Some information about Boron:
1. Dried prunes are a good source of boron
2. The bones of humans using boron supplement are harder to cut
3. Research indicates that areas of the world with highest intake of
dietary boron have the lowest incidence of arthritis

4. Boron increased life span in animal studies
5. Boron works synergistically with calcium and magnesium
6. Boron balances vitamin D3 deficiency
7. Boron contributes to growth cartilage maturation

http://www.bfr.bund.de/cm/245/addition_of_boric_acid_or_borax_to_food_supplements.pdf

Addition of boric acid or borax to food supplements
BfR Health Assessment No. 006/2006, 16 November 2005
Food supplements are foods containing one or more nutrients like vitamins,
minerals or trace
elements in concentrated form that are sold as tablets, capsules or coated
tablets. They are
governed by the valid provisions of the Food and Feed Code (LFBG) and
Regulation (EC)

No. 178/2002. According to them, foods may not be harmful.
In Germany the addition of the trace element boron as boric acid or borax
to food supplements
was not permitted up to now. However, this situation could soon change
since the
laws in the EU Member States are to be approximated and its addition is
permitted in other
European countries. If this happens, boron could also go on the market in
Germany as an
ingredient in food supplements. Against this backdrop, the Federal
Institute for Risk Assessment
(BfR) evaluated the risk to health which boric acid or borax could entail
in food supplements.

I don't know about that but the herb pennyroyal works great for fleas. I
don't think it kills them but they hate it so if you manage to get rid of
them, it keeps them away. We used to regularly get flleas until i discovered
it, as the cats would bring them in. After that, I always spread some dried
pennyroyal on the mattressess under the sheets and this kept the beds free.
I'd also sprinkle some on the floors and then sweep it into the cracks in
the floorboards (we had varnished floors).

I'd then rub the herb over myself and take the cat outside and rub
pennyroyal through it's coat. The cat didn't mind but you could literally
see clouds of fleas leaping off it.

Hi Sam,

Yes, One can indeed use borax on animals. It is a well reputed cure for
mange. I used to use it, quite dilute as a soap / fur conditioner for
dogs and cats before i heard of the mange treatment..

Google 'mange borax' and you get lots of hits. One that i've been to is :

If you sprinkle (flour shifter works) borax on your carpet and let sit
overnight it will kill the fleas, vacuum well the next day and repeat a
few days later.Might need to do this every week or two until you have it
under control. Do not put it on your dogs.

I'm in the UK. i originally got it from a friend in Edinburgh who was a

We have suffered with fleas on my dog for the past 2 years. I have tried all
the natural remedies I could find like DE and garlic, but nothing worked. The
only thing that worked was Comfortis, a probably vile, monthly medication.
FINALLY, I read about apple cider vinegar being good for fleas. I started
putting a splash in his water (probably a 4 cup water bowl), and he has been
flea free for several months now. It has been a god send for us. He doesn't
seem to mind the taste either, thank goodness. I am so happy to spread the

I've done it for a few years now, no negatives particular to the borax and
finger method, except this- I did three different methods to the edge of
excess just to see what would happen. I separately did the finger in the
borax, took a boron supp, and drank a lot of Bragg vinegar (organic apples
are rich in boron). All three, to excess, gave a funny feeling after about
2 weeks. Boron is not something to overdo, a little goes a long way. The
borax method is my favorite. DaddyBob

In addition, a boiled, saturated solution of boric acid in water makes
an effective remedy for pink eye. It used to be the MD's remedy of
choice in the 50's. It may also be helpful for other things.

I thought boric acid is much more potent than borax- so less would be
needed. Somebody could do the math on it.

Be careful with boric acid for eyes.  They come in different strengths.  My
grandma had an eye surgery for cataracts and the nurse used a stronger boric
acid than what doc ordered and she got  blind.  Ask your eye doctor
what strength  should be used for eyes.

I am so happy to spread the
word about this and hope it helps someone else!

Re: CSOT boron and borax

2009-09-30 Thread Marshall Dudley
The boric acid I am talking about is pure, a powder. For use in eyes you
mix it with distilled water. The strength is nothing more than how much
you dilute it. According to this site
http://www.ehow.com/way_5195536_boric-acid-eye-bath-recipe.html :

The adult strength eye wash is made with 1 tsp. of boric acid in 1 cup
of water
http://www.ehow.com/way_5195536_boric-acid-eye-bath-recipe.html#. An
eye wash for children http://www.ehow.com/children/ should contain 1/2
to 2/3 tsp. boric acid per cup of water.

Buy medicinal grade boric acid powder at a pharmacy or online. Avoid the
industrial grade powder used in pesticides. Use distilled water to make
your eye bath so it won't be contaminated with the chemicals and
pollutants often present in tap water.

just one

all the natural remedies I could find like DE and garlic, but nothing worked.
The only thing that worked was Comfortis, a probably vile, monthly medication.
FINALLY, I read about apple cider vinegar being good for fleas. I started
putting a splash in his water (probably a 4 cup water bowl), and he has been
flea free for several months now. It has been a god send for us. He doesn't
seem to mind the taste either, thank goodness. I am so happy to spread the
word about this and hope it helps someone else!

I don't know about that but the herb pennyroyal works great for
fleas. I don't think it kills them but they hate it so if you manage to get rid
of them, it keeps them away. We used to regularly get flleas until i discovered
it, as the cats would bring them in. After that, I always spread some dried
pennyroyal on the mattressess under the sheets and this kept the beds free. I'd
also sprinkle some on the floors and then sweep it into the cracks in the
floorboards (we had varnished floors).

I'd then rub the herb over myself and take the cat outside and rub
pennyroyal through it's coat. The cat didn't mind but you could literally see
clouds of fleas leaping off it.

  good luck

The boric acid I am talking about is pure, a powder. For use in eyes you mix it
with distilled water. The strength is nothing more than how much you dilute
it.  According to this site
http://www.ehow.com/way_5195536_boric-acid-eye-bath-recipe.html :

The adult strength eye wash is made with 1 tsp. of boric acid in 1 cup of
water http://www.ehow.com/way_5195536_boric-acid-eye-bath-recipe.html#. An
eye wash for children http://www.ehow.com/children/ should contain 1/2 to 2/3
tsp. boric acid per cup of water.

Buy medicinal grade boric acid powder at a pharmacy or online. Avoid the
industrial grade powder used in pesticides. Use distilled water to make your
eye bath so it won't be contaminated with the chemicals and pollutants often
present in tap water.

In addition, a boiled, saturated solution of boric acid in water
makes an effective remedy for pink eye. It used to be the MD's
remedy of choice in the 50's.  It may also be helpful for other

I thought boric acid is much more potent than borax- so less would
be needed. Somebody could do the math on it.

LD 50, or the Lethal Dose 50, is the dose it takes to kill
half of the animals used, generally rats and mice,

because of the close correlation to human toxicity.

Looks like it takes a lot to kill a rat or a mouse, 2 gm per
Kg body weight, which would be aapx 140 gms for
a person. Not that I am advocating ingestion mind you, just
pointing out that what is on the end or your
finger is many orders of magnitude lower than 140 gms,
probably in the range of 1.4 mg.

Re: CSOT boron and borax

2009-09-29 Thread Marshall Dudley
It is a compound of sodium, boron, oxygen and the OH radical.
Specifically it is Na2B4O7·10H2O. Although in small dosages it can
supply needed boron, in large dosages it is toxic, as is any compound
containing boron. It has an LD-50 of around 2 gram per KG for rodents.
Thus a 200 pound person would have a likely limit of around 200 grams or
about 6 ounces.
