After reading about CC water properties, I was truly amazed. Here, in So Fl we
have them growing everywhere. If people want coke over coconuts.more for
me to enjoy. :)

A question. After taken from the tree, do they have a shelf life. I've been
collecting ( the greener ones) and storing them in a wicker basket. Also, do
you use/prefer the greens over the more mature yellow. Does one have more
benefit over the other.

2008-04-27 Thread Carol Ann
Hi Sandee,
FYI, I am happily collecting fresh coconuts. Just bought a new hammer. :)
Came across the commercial cans in the store...seems to be a new item. So, I
tried one for comparison. At .99 - 1.29 per can the are no bargain at all.
Mainly because they have so many addatives such as corn syrup or sugar and also
noted a preservative. Once you have had the real thing straight from the
coconut, the cans pale by comparison. Don't really equate to water but more of
a sugary liquid.

Interesting fact I learned upon doing the coconut water research. They are so
close in chemistry to human blood plasma that fresh coconut water during the
war was used as a substitute during plasma shortages - that and the fact that
the water was sterile.

Sandee George wrote: Hi There Carol Ann - it is very simply
get a flat head screw driver and a

at the top of the coconut you make a triangle by hitting the screwdriver
with the hammer
when you have completed the third side of the triangle you then use the
screwdriver to
lift the triangle and voilla you have an entrance through which you can
either put a straw
or empty the coconut out - now this is using a green coconut, if they are
allowed to dry
then you will not be able to do this and anyway the water out of a dry
coconut tastes
nasty - so give this system a whirl

Re: CS>Re: Gatorade? Coconut Water Cans.

2008-03-16 Thread Rowena
Well, I was a bit puzzled, as the top looked dull like aluminium, but the sides
were very firm. But I couldn't see why they would put an aluminium top on a
steel can.

Anyway, I remembered that a fridge magnet would be enough to test it with and -
surprise - the top is aluminium, the sides are steel and the bottom is
aluminium - so everybody was correct, in a way.

I don't see any mention of sulphur dioxide on these cans, but the sugar is
certainly regrettable, and I only just noticed that there is in any case only
50% coconut water, and the rest is water, pulp and sugar. I'm not sure I want
to pay to transport water all the way from Thailand.

Nothing beats fresh, does it? You know what this means? With the Australian
winter approaching, I may be forced to miss the coldest weeks, trek all the way
to the absolute other corner of Australia, Queensland, Mission Beach, (one of
the few places where rainforest meets the reef) to be near to where the
coconuts grow, in a place that just happens to be warm if not hot, and I might
even have to check in at a Youth Hostel or Backpackers for a month or so to get
fresh coconuts every day and do my coconut cure the budget way! Misery and
suffering, just because I can't buy 100% fresh coconut juice in a glass bottle!

According to http://www.cocotap.com/nutrition.htm the juice/milk nomenclature
is as follows: "Coconut water, also called coconut juice, is the liquid found
inside a fresh coconut. Contrary to popular belief, this liquid is not the same
as coconut milk. Coconut water is in a sense a tree sap. It is a relatively
clear liquid that looks more like water than it does milk."

Coconut milk is thick and white, processed from the flesh, and coconut cream is
the same but with lower water content.

Bruce Fife said:
Coconut water has been a popular beverage in the tropics for generations and it
wasn't long before physicians began experimenting with it for oral rehydration.
They found that it was just as effective orally as it was intravenously in
combating dehydration. Due to coconut water's chemical composition it is
absorbed through the intestinal wall quicker than plain water, bringing about a
faster recovery and eliminating the need for IV rehydration therapy.

Well some steel is magnetic. Most SS cookware and flatware, and other
kitchen items like teakettles and collanders and so on now are not magnetic.
I tested some cans here, and looks like most steel food cans still are
magnetic.
But I don't worry about aluminum, anyway. I know most people are worried
about it, but I'm just not. It is the 4th most common element in the
earth's crust, and cannot be avoided in any case. The case for
alzheimer's being caused by aluminum in the brain has not been proven,
in fact it now seems that it is the result of alzheimer's not the cause.

How about doing some internet research on the benefits of coconut
water? I think many people will already have heard that during WWII it was
even used as a blood volume expander instead of the unavailable blood

very close to the human blood ratio.
It's available in many forms; in my town I am able to get it

Re: CS>Re: Gatorade? Coconut Water Cans.

2008-03-15 Thread Sandee George
Hi There Carol Ann - it is very simply get a flat head screw driver and a
hammer and
at the top of the coconut you make a triangle by hitting the screwdriver
with the hammer
when you have completed the third side of the triangle you then use the
screwdriver to
lift the triangle and voilla you have an entrance through which you can
either put a straw
or empty the coconut out - now this is using a green coconut, if they are
allowed to dry
then you will not be able to do this and anyway the water out of a dry
coconut tastes
nasty - so give this system a whirl

Sandee

R, I've seen the cans here in CT and they are so light, I assumed they were
aluminum like soda cans. That's why I haven't bought any. I've not seen it in
glass. How do you know they are steel? Jess

No, apparently they are steel cans.
I wonder whether anyone produces it in glass bottles.

Are the cans aluminum? Jess

How about doing some internet research on the benefits of coconut water?

2008-03-15 Thread Carol Ann
I live in Florida, coconuts discarded are in
abundance.
The Islanders from Cuba often sell coconuts on the
side of the road and in latin orientated grocery
stores.

Funny, how if an item dosen't come alreay bottled in
glitzy packaging, its not percieved to be nutritious.

So, how do you open a coconut without losing a few
fingers or always having to have an ax on hand?

So...what is the proper way to open the coconuts? We love
coconut water, but we open them the brute force way.

Thanks,
Gene
