[SLUG] enabling ntpd through firewall ?

2003-11-12 Thread Voytek
I'm trying to enable ntpd on RH73, what port do I need to allow in the
ipchains for ntpd ?

syslog says this:

Nov 12 17:41:28 ntpd[15061]: ntpd [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Apr 8 06:30:52 EDT
2002 (1)
Nov 12 17:41:28 ntpd: ntpd startup succeeded

Nov 12 17:41:28 ntpd[15061]: kernel time discipline status 0040
Nov 12 17:41:28 ntpd[15061]: frequency initialized 0.000 from
/etc/ntp/drift

but machine's time has not synced as yet, I pressume either my own ipchains
blocks it, or, the external firewall, if it was my ipchains, where would that
show ?

123 or ntp - you can use either, the name to port number mapping is in
/etc/services:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ grep -w ntp /etc/services
ntp 123/tcp
ntp 123/udp # Network Time Protocol

Closer.. the picture is still incomplete. You have to allow the UDP
connection FROM port 123 of the nominated NTP server you are referencing.
As for that, try ntp.big-isp-domain.com.au eg ntp.optus.net.au and I've
heard you can also use your nearest hop telstra ADSL router.

I haven't tested this and I don't know what the debian pppoe package
includes.

The rp-pppoe client is needed because current release pppd & kernel ppp
modules don't support pppoe. However pppd-2.4.2b3 is available so I
presume an official release of the pppd user space daemon is happening
real soon now. Might be a good idea to checkout the newer kernel stuff
too.

Then again I could be talking out of my arse ;-)

These machines allow commands like "power off" AND "power on" at

IBM have server management cards that allow this. Personally though,
I've found the combination of an APC network managed power device
(allows 'wall' power on / power off) with a BIOS that allows setting the
power-on state to always on to be effective.

Most of the bigco vendors have management ports or cards for this, I know
for sure that Dell, Compaq and IBM do. A potentially more expensive option
is a serial/network accessible UPS or power board...

Setting this value to yes doesn't mean that Samba will become

Setting this value to no will cause nmbd never to become a local

I really DO recommend people to be employed. I really DO actually cull
resumes by reading them. Sorry to disappoint.

Yes I am advising that I think a piece of paper gets you past the first
point. Past that it really is useless. Sorry but your Novell
certification is now wallpaper.

Rule 1 of interviews if they look at your paper work they are looking
for something to talk about and you have lost the job.

Rule 2 your paperwork gets you the interview.

> Me, I have enough "certification" to wall paper my office.

Me, I have none, including LPI but I have stayed with my company 10
years. According to your comments you want a new job, I can only advise
what is looked for. What you do with this advice is up to yourself.

Seriously there are are 90% of our resumes now say "I have used Unix /
Linux", LPI means you are actually serious. A comment in your resume
means I have booted knoppix at least once.

Now this is negative. I understand it but it really is negative.

Weigh the cost of not having it against the cost of having it. I did
this for my University degree ($10K after tax) and it came out lacking
so I dropped my course. I think you would benefit from the reading up
(side benefit) of LPI, the exam is relatively cheap so why not do it.

The point is that I don't have time to read 100 resumes I get maybe 10,
do you want to be in that pile or not.

> Bottom line; if you are thinking of paying for certification, go to
> http://www.jobnet.com.au or some other employment site and see exactly

Next dose of reality here. My company still does not use online
services, we still pay to have our resumes culled by head hunters. What
the head hunters put up are tempered by their perception of you, they do
not have a clue technically. I don't condone using head hunters, it
just is. We hired a Unix person because they had an MCSE as well, go
figure??? so certifications certainly do count. They are not the whole
picture.

If you are not passing go on your resume with prior certification then
seriously consider investing in professional resume writing not in
certification. This will have a higher return on investment.

Another option (although a little expensive) is a network enabled KVM

doesn't solve the power off/on requirement in itself, it could be used
with other power management tools to get the same effect with cheaper

Quite right. I also know Sun Microsystems make a SUPERB Network enabled
KVM (but it costs about as much an E15k!), HP/Compaq make them as well
and their are a few 3rd party/OEM vendors too.

Personally, if there is no point and money isn't a problem, just buy the

RE: [SLUG] enabling ntpd through firewall ?

2003-11-12 Thread Visser, Martin
I'm not sure what you mean by "pathetic". Australia has a huge number of
NTP servers, especially stratum 2 and 3 (we may even have a few stratum
1's). All the large ISPs will have at least 2 or 3. A large number of
universities also have them. They are out there, but granted it is
sometimes difficult to find them.

Unfortunately the drive to develop "pool.ntp.org" isn't going to happen
unless they engage directly with the prominent NTP providers. (I hadn't
heard of the pool.ntp.org domain until your mail.) It certainly is a
good idea, though they clearly haven't ramped up publicity yet. The lack
of ANY servers listed in the their web site at
http://twiki.ntp.org/bin/view/Servers/NTPPoolServers is a bit telling.

(And the reverse lookup of au.pool.ntp.org as bob.greenwood.wa.edu.au
hardly gives that NTP server any credibility ;-)

You need to allow udp too, both incoming and outgoing, and either source
or destination port 123 - ntpdate uses a high source port. If you ntpd
rather than ntpdate, you only need to allow destination port 123.

Run ntpdate in debug mode (-d), you should see something like this:

If you don't see the "receive" messages, a firewall is blocking the
packets. If you log all packets that your firewall blocks, then you can
easily see if it's your firewall that's the problem.

[SLUG] sendmail rejecting my domain as unresolving, why ?

2003-11-12 Thread Voytek
following some very worthwile suggestions from sluggers, I've installed Postfix
2.x, after few initial glitches of the 'where do I start?' as well as 'what do I
do with this' type, it all works very well, including anti-uce averaging 75%
REJECTs, and, so far, only one known false positive. So, thanks for the
suggestions and help !

but, perusing my postfix logs, I noticed some reject for my own domain name,
looking further, I see this:

one of the vhosts fwrds mail to a remote isp, the mail has @sbt.net.au sender;

why would a remote sendmail REJECT then ACCEPT 'sbt.net.au' as domain name ?

I've asked on a Postfix list, but was told 'you're rejected by sendmail, ask a
sendmail expert'

as there are some sendmail experts here

a. it's from an agency so it's 50/50 as to whether it's a genuine
placement or a resume collector

b. salary is unquantified, so highly qualified people may be applying
only to find it's $15/hr thus quickly losing interest

c. for someone very qualified the role is very mundane in the
generalized description given, anyone with several years of exp isn't at
face value going to find a lot of meat in it

d. its a short contract so many people have only limited interest

e. maybe it's poorly worded re:requirments and he's received hundreds of
apps but none meet his internal job spec or are of interest to the
client, thus the cycle perpetuates with each relisting

Jim

You must be new to jobnet. No offence intended.

If a job is advertised in the newspaper by a company itself, there is a
good chance that someone really wants to employ someone because
newspaper advertisements cost money.

If the job is advertised in the newspaper by a big agency, it means
close to nothing, because big agencies obtain cheap advertising by
committing to take so many column inches each week. So, occassionally
they have column inches to fill and they advertise non-existent jobs to
fill the space. Also, it gives them resumes for their database.

It goes downhill fast from there.

Internet advertising is basically very cheap or no cost, so there is a
lot of crap (false advertisements).

Agencies place advertisements for the following reasons;
1) they have a position to fill,
2) they might have a position to fill,
3) some company bunny has been pestered and told them they want people
with
these skills to get the agency off their back,
4) they have no one on the books with those skills, so they collect
resumes,
5) they have no jobs on their book, so they collect resumes for when
they do,
6) to stop other people applying for the position through other
agencies
(apply through them and they sit on your resume
because they have already selected 3 people to put forward).
7) no one has advertised the job for a while, so lets run it.

You will often see an advertisement on Jobnet come out through one
agency one day and four others the next day. Surprise! {:-)

Other funnies of dealing with jobnet;
1) the agency sends you an email saying you've already applied for the
job three times.
2) that job in the CBD has suddenly relocated to Palm Beach,
3) A hot *nix admin job suddenly requires 5 years Win 2003 experience,
4) the list of requirements is two pages long and the job starts a $25K
pa,
5) an entry level IT contract job pays $14/hour,
6) Tertiary qualifications required (MCSE preferred),
7) "That position has closed", but the add runs for two more weeks,
8) "That position has closed and they are interviewing", but the
company
confirms that they are still taking applications,

and on and on.

curiosity question? software and printer?

Have you looked at ghostscript?

What printer(s) are you trying to run?
What functionality do you require?

Under debian, as root, run:
pppoeconf

That will set everything up for you, and then to control the connection
use:
To Connect:
pon dsl-provider
To Disconnect:
poff dsl-provider

IIRC, pppoeconf also asks you if you'd like it to start the connection
on startup.

[SLUG] Mondo restore problem

2003-11-12 Thread Peter Vogel
Knowing just enough about linux to get into trouble, I am trying to
restore a linux installation from a CD made for Mondo restore.

The CD boots okay, and whirs away for a while, then aborts with:

"Unable to mount some or all of your partitions."

This is the mondo-restore log.

One thing that looks odd is the partitions are very small, considering
it's a 120GB drive.

I trust that someone out there will immediately spot the problem :-) and
give me a clue what to do.

Thanks

That's OK. I called mount w/o a filesystem type and it worked fine in the end.

I'm not sure what you mean by "pathetic". Australia has a huge number of
NTP servers, especially stratum 2 and 3 (we may even have a few stratum

universities also have them. They are out there, but granted it is
sometimes difficult to find them.
There were 1's, and I'm sure still are. They're just not advertised
any more. (Or not working.) And if they're not advertised, do you
feel justified using them, or does that constitute 'unapproved access
to a computer', which is an imprisonable offence? Which hp-run server
in Australia do I have permission to use?
When I traceroute from my (Bigpond, cough) ADSL at home to just about
anywhere, I find that the routers nearest me just about all do ntp.
But would I get warned off them, or prosecuted for using them? I'm
sure Telstra wouldn't be ecstatic about it, since (to my knowledge)
they have never advertised ntp servers to non-business clients, and
maybe not even then.

Oops! I seem to have overlooked this so I'll take the opportunity to
post now (see below)

Computerbank's next activity will take place on this comming Saturday,
November 15th. We have to move all our stock currently stored at
Blacktown North Public School to the Seven Hills warehouse as the school
needs their classroom back. We will still retain the use of another
classroom but on a shared basis and hence no use as a warehouse.

If anyone would like to help we will meet at the school in Bessemer St.
Blacktown (off Sunnyholt Road) at 9am. If you can bring a Ute, horse
float or box trailer that would be appreciated but otherwise just turn
up and lend a hand.

cheers,

Ken
