Re: [SLUG] [OT] ASX Research Database
go to: finance.yahoo.com.au enter eg: cba and do a daywatch quote, when you get to the next screen click the link for the downloadable spreadsheet format, then just use wget on that url: so the example for CBA would be: http://au.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=cba&m=a&f=sl1d1t1c1ohgv&e=.csv this would give me a nice delimited text file, from there parse and insert into database. I was using finance.yahoo.com.au for over a year to get share quotes to mirror on our intranet pages, until I2 got an internal live feed from comsec. Advantage of comsec feed is it live whereas the yahoo feed is at least 20 mins old. I don't know of any sub $200.00 scanners that come with a sheet feed option, and if available often the sheet-feeder costs more than the scanner. As pointed out above you can get a black box that "emulates" the dial tone for you. Jaycar should be able to help you out. Also some fax support 200 dpi scans so you may be able to get fairly good results. Failing that get your self a $80,000 Kodak document scanner, we've got them at work and they work really well, and if you don't want mis-feeds you can go the air feed and air separated model. You can get @home installed without it, just use a bit of social engineering. When I had @home installed I didn't let the tech touch my computer. Here are some tips. When the installer turns up, tell him that: - The computers broken and you'll install the software later. - Say you've had optus cable before and you know how to do it. (software that is) - You could say your working on very sensitive work stuff under an NDA and you cannot let him have access to the machine. - Put a bios password on and tell your spouse/mum/dad has the password etc etc. - If all fails just slip him a 20, a 6 pack etc etc. At the end of the day all he cares about is getting the install done and your signature on the work order. Then once he's gone spend a total of 20 secs setting up linux to connect to @home. I personally download on average 5-6 iso's a month, napster, plus other heavy downloads, I'm yet to get above a 6 on netstats, so the system isn't to bad. I would prefer no netstats, but it was to be expected as some people take unlimited quite literally leeching warez iso's 24/7 While the service is "shared" I'm yet to get under 300 Kilobytes/Sec when downloading from aarnet (I'm on the carlingford node) on occasions I have cracked 600 Kbytes/Sec sustained download from aarnet, this would seems quite good for "shared" service and only once did I crack 700 Kbytes/Sec (simultaneous iso downloads). Lately downloads from the USA a quite good as well ranging from 10 Kbytes/Sec to 250 KBytes/Sec. I only thing I don't like about Optus is reliablilty, ie os pipes go down about once a month (atleast in my experiance), though this is said to fixed with sx. Hope this helps. Hi All, Would the SLUG users/committee members be interested in: Webcasting / Vid Capture(ing) SLUG presentations. How many times have you missed that presentation due to other commitments. Video Capturing these presentations would be great, once captured they could then be mpeged and made available on the web site, At the end of the year a CD could be complied. Is this idea good/fantastic/stupid ? Anyway I know that I've already missed some presentations that I really wanted to get to, and having the presentation in *.mpeg would've been great. [SLUG] HelixCode + Win4Lin Window positioning
Hello All, I have a really weird problem. I using the latest HelixCode Gnome along with Sawfish 0.31 (I think, I'm away from the box atm). All other windows and saving their window positions fine, except for Win4Lin, instead of going to 0,0 it starts at 0,20ish thus covering the gnome panel at the bottom. I've tried everything from moving the window to the required position and using save position, save attributes, using the matched window settings in the control panel (sawfish). Hand editting the window-history file in ~.sawfish/ without success. Is anyone else having similiar problems, or know of a fix for this one ?? Alan, Why don't you go for the Hyperconnect Product see: http://www.telstra.com.au/adsl/cprice.htm My understanding of the product is that it's designed to link offices together using adsl If you went for the Up to 1.5Mbps/256kbps @ $152.00 /month that would give 256 kbps both ways. Believe me $152 is CHEAP, compared to what I used to pay for capped ISDN. If internet connectivity is required you could get each office a Business deluxe Bigpond ADSL @ 132.50 / month. That's under $300.00, I was paying $435.00 just for a 128 kbps isdn line Regards Mehmet Ozdemir > We want to get all of our stores hooked up together, so we can do major > filesharing (50mb documents) and also internet conectivity etc. > > Seems ADSL isn't the go.. and HDSL is going to be too costly.. > > .. Re: [SLUG] fast internet connections...
Here are some options. * It's a long shot but you could try davnet * contact ihug for a satellite install, you could in theory use the 128 isdn up to Telstra BPD, and Satellite Down upto 6 Mb/Sec. * How about bonding 4 - 8 isdn channels, there are PCI adaptors, and router for that matter that allow this, * Following on from above, how about primary rate isdn * If the top of your building site has good line of site, try contacting some of the not so big isp's for a line sight wireless connection, they will probably ask that you pay for the install costs, try Zipworld Corporate. There are many options still available to you. Regards Mehmet Ozdemir > Yeah the problem is that the cable modem line doesn't reach us. It doesn't need to cost that much but right now there is NO competition in this market. Basically when I looked at it I expected it to cost around $1000 tops. But the powers that be wanted a solution YESTERDAY, so I put the proposal up expecting it to laughed at when they saw the price, instead they saaid fine go ahead. I would guess that they already knew how much this task was costing them in FTE's per year so they saw the price, did the sums and went with it. Also once it setup you don't anyone in the HR dept that knows SQL, HTML (ie extra dollars) it just runs, producing org charts whenever the HR system changes. Anyway that my real life example. RE: [SLUG] TNT2 drivers with a patched Win4Lin kernel ??
OK, I think I know whats's wrong when I try to use NVdriver with the Win4Lin kernel it doesn't load eg: insmod NVdriver = Using /lib/modules/2.2.14-win4lin/video/NVdriver /lib/modules/2.2.14-win4lin/video/NVdriver: kernel-module version mismatch /lib/modules/2.2.14-win4lin/video/NVdriver was compiled for kernel version 2.2.14-5.0 while this kernel is version 2.2.14-win4lin. so if I do insmod -f NVdriver everthing is GREAT, so the question now is how can I get NVdriver to be force loaded on boot ? which file do I need to edit for this to happen ? No trelos provide a patch for all the latest stable kernels about 60kb in size. or prebuilt replacenment kernels for many major distributions. (or course I chose to build my own) which should work for your case. As for NVdriver it's a kernel module and a large one at that. Which you compile some c code and link some binary stuff to make the module. Some binary code is there for it. (you haven't noticed all 3d apps include XFree86 4.0 are like at least 130Mb in size? as reported by top when using the OpenGL libs from nvidia? Hello, I was wondering if anyone out there know how a can get a Win4Lin patch Redhat 6.2 machine to work with the NVIDIA 0.93 drivers, they seem to be mutually exclusive, or maybe it's just my lack of skill ? Here's what I've done: Standard RH6.2 Installed Win4Lin Installed RH6.2 patch from Trelos WWW site Everything good so far, Now when I load the Kernel drivers for the TNT2 X doesn't run. What I have noticed is at the LILO prompt if I boot "Linux" X works fine (NVIDIA) but Win4Lin doesn't and if a boot "Win4Lin" Win4Lin works but NVIDIA doesn't (i can still run X using the NV driver), so could i be that the NVIDIA drivers are patching Linux kernel rather that Win4Lin or am i just confused, and does someone know how I can get BOTH a TNT2 and Win4Lin to live happily together Kind Regards Mehmet Ozdemir -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug
