Re: [RCSE] Aileron/Rudder mixing

2000-02-03 Thread Dick Williamson

Rodger,

You asked,

When using A/R mixing, can you still use rudder independently?
also I have a futaba 6 xa, not with specific sailplane programsbut
programmable...for example if I wanted "Crow" for landing, would it still be
possible? during crow, how are ailerons functioning? Are they full up and
flaps full down, and are you controlling yaw and roll with rudder alone?

=

I have a Futaba 8UAF, so I can't intelligently comment on what you can do
with the 6XA. "Crow" or "Butterfly" is available on the 8UAF. Don
Edberg's book on the 8-channel radios describes how to do the set up and
why the controls need to be set up certain ways. He may also have
suggestions on the 6XA.

With A/R mixing, the right stick gives the programmed amount of rudder
coupling. The left stick can be used to add to the input giving by the
right stick. Thus, more (or less rudder) can be added by manipulating the
left stick in addition to the right stick. Note: when you have trims,
along with multiple switches and levers manipulating a control surface
through programmable mixes, the effects of the several different inputs is
additive. They don't override each other

There are special considerations when the plane is in crow. Because the
plane is moving slowly, the ailerons are not as effective. You need to
rely more on rudder control. On the 8UAF, the mixes can be set up such
that the "throttle" stick which controls the amount of crow is linked so as
to provide extra A/R mixing. Once the throttle is beyond about half way,
the A/R mixing is increased.

When in crow, the ailerons go up as the throttle stick is moved, and the
flaps go down. The maximum deflection (trim position) for the ailerons is
in the range of 20 deg. The maximum flap deflection is close to 90 deg.
When the ailerons are raised, furthering raising of an aileron by using the
right stick may not be possible without hitting the stops. Also, the
interaction of ailerons and yaw can be reversed at large deflections. The
strategy with the 8UAF is to use programmable mixes such that an aileron is
not allowed to rise when there is a lot of crow. Only the downward going
aileron moves with the right stick. When the aileron is lowered, drag is
reduced and that side of the wing speeds up. This is the opposite of the
normal adverse yaw when not in crow. So both ailerons and rudder are
controlling yaw, but you rely mostly on rudder at low speeds.

Regards,

Dick

Actually, I started out cutting them with a rigging axe, and refined my
method by switching over to Stihl!

You must be one of those 'sloper' guys I hear so much about. What do you use
for wing spars? GlueLams? or do you go straight for the Old Growth Doug Firs
with the nice taper?

Just one tip... if its obeechi covered *don't stain it* before varathaning it.
I did, and it had blochy white stuff around where the expoxy invisibly
bled through to the top layer of the wood during the bagging process.

Other than that, great plane! Very stable and predictable. Carries
a camera pretty good too.

[RCSE] New AMD CYCLONE Details

2000-02-03 Thread GordySoar

For those of you who didn't get my dry humor. This post was about the
airplane, and for those who posted me about how to get one before inventory
was gone here is the information on the dealer.

Keep in mind I haven' t seen the kit but did talk to guys who have purchased
some of the other planes in the line and really liked them (as in worth the
money :-)
Its a pretty busy page but click on the Catalog to see the planes then on AMD
kits.
Not a lot of information, but enuf to wet your whistle.

Note, don't bother to call for more detail cuz at this time Ray, is out
pretty often and he is the only one with details (not the kind we are usually
gonna ask about ) there. Its not a huge store or anything. But Ray is a
nice guy, with more of a power background, although he has flown slope in the
past.
You can order off the website. If you want to wait a few days I will have
info like foil and stuff . You'll see the site promo says Carbon/Glass fuse.
The wings are pre sheeted foam... need to be covered or varnished. All
hardware comes with it and from the guys who got other kits. the instructions
are very sparse translations.

[RCSE] Ham Band

Pretty soon the HAM bands will be about as exclusive as
the CB band. Before you know it, your gliders on the 50Mhz band
will be crashing because some drunk truck driver with a HAM
license is trying to pick up a hooker on your frequency.

It's already happening. Back in 1967, I got my ham license before
investing over half a month's salary in one of those new fangled digital
radios just so I wouldn't get shot down by a good buddy. I did not have a
verifiable interference from either another modeler or a ham until a couple
of years ago. Back in 1997, I was unable to control my model at Visalia
when the model was above 200 feet. Radio checked out fine on the ground
and I was able to fly it specked out when I got back home. The next year,
I bought a radio on Channel 55 just for Visalia,

Then last year, I started having occasional radio problems. Turned out to
be a 6-meter repeater had been installed right on top of the frequency I
had been using since 1969. Real hams have a legitimate reason for using
the band. Unfortunately, most of the increased activity is due to the same
jerks that ruined the CB channels moving up to the ham bands now that the
licenses are so easy to get.

[RCSE] New Slope in Nashville

2000-02-03 Thread joegull

Just got back from a fun time on a new slope (cristened "The Guppy" - due to the
shape. (Damn if 54 degrees didn't feel good compared to the recent cold weather) The
slope proved out very well with a WSW wind but pure W would work best. Located across
Briley Parkway from Opryland (Music Valley Drive), take Briley Parkway to the Opryland
Hotel exit and then take McGavock toward the east away from Opryland Hotel and take
the first left. Park at the first Church on the right, cross the road and go through
break in the fence between the barb-wire and chain link and follow the outside of the
chain link fence to the open lot - about 400 yards. Slope is about 40-50' high and
all grass and at the open lot has a lot of room behind the slope. Wind was 8-15 mph
and gusty but very flyable, even had some fair thermals roll through. So you Music
City (Titan Town) guys need to check this one out...

Folks,

When announcing a contest, please give full information, like specifically.
where the contest is going to be. Some of us don't know where your clubs
are
by just the acronym you use, like the BAR/CSS contest just announced.

Seems we had a little conflict with the normal THSS

That is also good news for the TPG members who would
like to race but TPG has their monthly TD contest on
Sunday Feb 13th. Bren and Arthur no longer have
that excuse

Those that have already pre-registered and wish to
remain registered for the race on Feb 20, do not need
to respond. You others, Pre-Register by sending me...
