I don't own one, but the RCSE community has offered up accolades for the
Majestic by Laser Arts Co. several times in the past when this question
was asked. I believe I saw one in Rob Glover's basement while in
Huntsville. Maybe he could tell you more.

It's not an all wood kit. It has a fiber glass tail boom. I dunno if
that will eliminate it from the list of potentials.

I've never built one, but there are some interesting looking, large, all
wood RES planes offered at:

http://skybench.com/

Cheers,

Bill

Re: [RCSE] RES kit?

2001-07-05 Thread Bill Harris

Based on comments and what I have seen at the field, I'd chose two:

The 2-m Big Bird or 3-m Sky Bird from Skybench Aerotech at
http://www.skybench.com/ and the Majestic from Laser Arts at
http://members.aol.com/laserartco/ .

Although the Majestic does has a CF tailboom, the wing, fuse and
tailfeathers are wood and built-up, so it would qualify.

Re: [RCSE] Re: RES kit?

2001-07-05 Thread Ed Berris

I have built both the Majestic and the Sovereign. Both are laser cut kits
of exception quality and value. The parts fit was perfect. Yes, perfect.
I've never had a kit with such great parts fit.

There are a couple of Majestic's flying in our club right now. I haven't
quite finished with my Majestic but the two that are flying all report great
results.

The two meter kit couldn't have been easier to build. The wing is very
strong and should have no trouble handling a strong winch launch.

These kits finish into a nice looking bird that you can be proud of. The
fuselage pod is built like a preverbial brick house. STRONG and crash
worthy.

If you don't like a V tail glider and want a more traditional design, Laser
Arts does have a new kit they are selling that is billed as a Oly II
upgrade. AND if you don't like that, Whyte Wings has reissued the Oly II.
At $69.99 it's a steal. One more to consider would be the Paragon.

Hope this helps.

Re: [RCSE] Tip Stall or -

2001-07-05 Thread Tom Koszuta

It does sound like tip stall, Bill. Moving the CG forward will only make
the plane less maneuverable.

As far as what to do about the wing - Did you like anything about it? That
is the first question you need to answer before repairing it. Since you
already are repairing it, I guess that you will answer yes. I have a THICK
wing on an old HOB 2x2 that I keep repairing because it goes up on light
lift, is tough, and I have a so what if it ends up a pile of toothpicks
attitude toward it. (But notice that I keep repairing it - wind eats
airplanes ;)

Second - washout will help. But so will flying the plane faster. Try the
washout, but don't get carried away. At high speeds the washout will
actually cause the tip to lift downward. Since it is tip stalling, you are
most likely flying slow and the washout will help more than hurt. Any
chance that there was accidental wash-IN?

Lastly - I would suggest getting the plans for a better wing or more
suitable plane for where you fly. It costs more and there is emotional
attachment to the other plane - no matter how bad it flies - but in the long
term, you will be happier flying it. A good foam wing is an excellent
investment for slope flying cuz wind eats (built-up) airplanes.

Good luck.

Subject: [RCSE] Tip Stall or -

When a crash is a good thing. Flew my Primera two-meter on a slope
yesterday, and as luck would have it, hit a post on landing. The damage
was
just in one wing section, which I started repairing. Noted the wing has a
very large hardwood spar which was good to see, but is also why the wing
is
rather heavy, the chord is also rather narrow. The thought occurred to me,
that I have another wing from an Eclipse two-meter electric that might
work,
even matching colors. Sure enough the wing would work, although it
extended
 back past the wing saddle.

It was really windy by now, but I just had to try flying with the new
wing.
Hand tossing showed that the plane flew better on this wing. Was even able
to climb in thermals from a handlaunch.

 About the Tip Stall

The original wing had a tip stall problem, was thinking of trying to warp
some washout into it. Flying with the new wing the tip stall problem was
very much improved. The new wing had a thicker section, a wider chord
which
moved CG forward, and a lower wing loading and lower aspect ratio. My
question is; should I try washout in the original wing when repaired, move
the CG farther forward, or continue to use the new wing. Problem with the
new wing is that it is one-piece. Or maybe I should build a whole new
wing.

 Thanks,

 Bill Kuhl

Now my wife calls and tells me this box from Laser
Arts has arrived. What timing. My 2M Gnome may be
put aside so I can complete this. So many people have
praised this plane. She wants me to put in laminate
flooring before I start. Ugh. :-)

On a different note, I wonder what all wood means
anymore. I noticed on the picture for the SkyBird,
the wing is on the board being assembled. Looks like
CF on top of the bottom spar. Composite materials are
creeping in everywhere. Personally, I think seeing
the old and new blend is pretty neat. Kind of
like laminate flooring bringing wood and new materials
together. Somehow I don't get the same feeling about
the floor. :-)

Re: [RCSE] Sovereign 2-Meter

2001-07-05 Thread Snhrccsec
Bill,

Yes! I have 2 of them, One has been flying for the past year and the second
is under construction. The first one was build right off the plans except for
adding some carbon fiber to the spars. I tend to have a bit of a heavy foot
on the winch. The glider winches very well and can thermal with the best of
them. At a recent contest I came in second. It builds very light. I have
become a bit of a Laser Arts fan I also have 2 of the Majestics as well, this
too is a real sweet ship with serious contest ability.

[RCSE] Re: RES kit?

2001-07-05 Thread AMA3655
David is right -

That was a Majestic he saw in my basement. It is the best wood kit I ever
built, the engineering and quality are great. The tail boom is not carbon, it
is some kind of glass, fairly heavy and a little flexible.

I did beef the spar up a little, but you don't really need to. I like to see
the expression on the face of a gorilla winch owner with a 300 LB test line
when I prove that my "wood" wing plane is capable of breaking his line. Don't
ask me what I did, it's silly and I'm embarrassed.

Every time I pick the fuselage up I think "I could build a lighter one with a
conventional tail that would be better." Then I go out and fly the silly
thing and forget that foolishness.

The stuff I see on today's RCSE caused me to go look at all the new stuff on
Laser Arts website. Guess I may have to build another wood wing plane soon...

happy trails - Rob Glover

[RCSE] For Sale

2001-07-05 Thread Dave Seay

I have an open class Shadow Plus, built, no radio gear, for sale for $190.00
which includes shipping to anywhere in the continental US.

This plane was once sold by NSP and here is a link to the page they used to
have on their site...
http://www.nesail.com/shadow.html

This is a photo of the actual plane...
http://www.mustangone.com/MySailPlanes/ShadowPlus2.jpg

I have the original manual that originally came with the kit. I purchased
this plane from a friend last year but never got around to flying it.
To the best of my knowledge and based on a close visual inspection, the
plane is fully air-worthy.

There was some sort of minor damage done to the wing by the prior owner but
it was repaired. The damage was on the right wing under the area that has
the red/white stripes on it in the photo. I was assured that the plane was
flown since the repairs and still performs great.

I will accept personal checks, money orders or PayPal. Payment by personal
check will require a 10 business day wait, obviously.

I have a digital camera and can provide more photos if you are willing to
wait a day to tow.

Please contact me, off line, by email.

Thanks,
Dave
