[RCSE] REMOVING OLD COVERING

2001-12-31 Thread Paul & Rickie Clark

From M&M <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello, I have an old Windfree that
came to earth awhile back as a meteor and I am having difficulty removing a
bunch of the old covering off of the wing. Is there a trick to getting it
all off easily? Picking and scraping with an exacto knife is taking
forever... Thanks, MM

What's the trick to removing old covering!!?? Michael!! It is so
simple--never mind it took me a while to discover it for myself :-) !! Now
don't feel too foolish!! BUT!! IF you are removing old covering, I ASSUME
(dangerous) you are also planning to recover--is my assumption warranted
:-) !!?? IF not ignore the following :-) !! IF so!! Take your covering
iron and iron it off--heat and pull :-) !! You may end up with some of the
film color on the airframe, but small penalty; it should peel off nicely
for you! I use to rebuild crashed birds of friends being on a low
budget--those were power days; BUT my present project is a rebuild of the
classic Hobie Hawk ala'gracias-Bacus (last Christmas) and formerly a Gordy
Bird--it shall soar again!! Also, have a 3M nostalgia hangar queen rebuild
of a Japanese Hasegawa 3200 mm Reiher. The above process will also allow
you to save decals, etc, with some ease if desired :-) ! NOW! Put away
the Xacto knife, get out the iron and with an ole'one-two remove and
recover and get flying--to the FUN part!!

[RCSE] Sloping 2001, year in review

2001-12-31 Thread Greg Smith

Hi guys,

Happy New Year!

Since it is 11:30 at night and 10 degrees outside with a West wind , I guess
I can safely say that there will be no more sloping for 2001.

To everyone who I had the opportunity to fly with this year, I value all
your knowledge and assistance. Sloping is kind of like riding a bike, it
does come back even after a lengthy layoff (15+years!), but all your help
really made getting back in to the hobby a real pleasure.

Here are the stats for the year. All slope!

105 total days of slope flying.

Of that total:

93 days in Wisconsin! I guess you can slope in the Midwest!
4 days in Kansas MWSC, I'll be there again this year.
4 days in South Dakota. There will be more for 2002 SD rocks!
1 day in South Carolina
3 days in Indiana

The slopeflyer.com site is coming along nicely. We have about 170 pages of
slope related info and more on the way. If you have anything to contribute,
give me a shout.

BTW, I bought no less than 18 planes and 4 radios this year. Thanks Brian,
Tom, Doug, Steve, Denny, CR and Greenfield News and Hobby. I had to make up
for lost time.

Here's looking forward to 2002 and more super sloping.

Re: [RCSE] GPS & Battery Capacity

2001-12-31 Thread Jon Stone

The altitude (Z) measurement error you mention is
not unique to civilian radios.  The large Z errors are entirely due to poor geometry orientation of
the satellites at the time when each measurement is taken.  For the
technically oriented, the term is poor GDOP (Geometric Dilution of Precision)
when multi-lateration calculations are performed.  Used to do these kind of
calculations for a living.

The poor geometry refers to the most likely
scenario when all of the satellites are near
the horizon and none overhead.  Then any small error in the slant
range measurement will give a large error in the Z measurement.
It is unlikely that a satellite will be nearly
directly overhead for the duration of one of your flights.

Let's noit forget, folks-- the altitude
measurement is the one that's MOST effected by the inherent errors in civilian
GPS units. I've got a Garmin E-trex, Magellan Blazer, and a Magellan GPS
Companion for my Handspring Visor, and just sitting here on my porch , they all give me VASTLY differing altitude measurements. I'm in
Charleston SC, and they have varied by up to 200 ft ASL. Charleston, for the
most part is AT sea level

Just a caveat, for those who may want to know.
Personally, I'd rather dream up a rig for onboard data logging with barometric
devices, but I imagine such instruments would be quite pricey.

2001-12-31 Thread Zbigniew Michalczyk

Mike!
You welcome

I love that skidding touch down with side slip ( skidding) ...
piloting skills excellent very little side slipping over entire flight
time and beautiful cross wind landing. Like a real one.

MUCHA is one of the most admired gliders of the past ( as model and as real
one) .
Polish gliders have that unspeakable charm. They lack 3-5 points on glide
performance, but controllability is that what gets attention of any pilot.
Bad thing is they are not much around. In the past they were considered as
secondary value because were coming from communistic country. Now when is a
time to prize the value there is not many of them left. Production in
80-ties and 90-ties were very limited. Now SZD does not exists any more.
But who today doesn't know Fox, Jantar, Foka, Swift, Puchacz , Kobuz or
Diana. There is new wave of Polish glider on the rise. Watch PW-5, PW-6 for
their character.
Would be nice to have them all as beautiful models around in contradiction
to those DG ,ASW , ASH, K's

You got my word I am working on it.

If it comes to MUCHA model it doesn't fly that fast as you have seen.
It has a fairly low wing loading and thermals like a dream.
It might be speed of camera shutter or optic effect. For sure it flies like
a real one.

If you feel any need to know more about it get back to me

Somewhere there is a movie taken with a Sanyo digital camera
in movie mode. It was strapped to the top of one wing of an
electric Stork, and a bunch of Lithium batteries were taped
to the other wing for power and balance.

The video is breathtaking ... right up to the crash. The
camera and batteries obviously caused a weight, drag, and
balance problem. It was obvious that it was hard to recover
from a nose down attitude, and the video ends with failure
to do so ... probably the motor cells didn't have enough
power at this point like they did earlier in the flight.

Oh, there was also a downlink allowing the pilot to see
via a head mounted screen. He could trigger the camera
to take a still shot whenever he wanted.

I'll try to see if the video is still around the net.

They are also the same size as a Volz micro-maxx if you guys have ships
that are molded for those. I just put four 368's in my new Stork 2, which
is molded for micro-maxx and wing-maxx. I still used the wing-maxx for the
aileron/trileron setup, but put the 368's everywhere else. Nice servos,
these and the MCV2's from MPX are my favorites now.

Interestingly enough, it appears the new Stork 2 has the same airfoil as
the NYX.

Although my new Stork 2 has been finished for weeks, it's too cold for me
to go out and test it... you really have the jones for flying

[RCSE] First Flights on NYX

2001-12-31 Thread Marc Gellart

Despite the temp being in the low 20's, got out and got my first flights on
my NYX. I have a tweak or two before tomorrow and flying at the DARTS
field, but this thing has mega legs and can still be cranked down to nothing
in turns.

A couple of things pertaining to this and many other designs using all
carbon/kevlar material in the fuse that was a real mind bender for a bit.
Started with JR credit card RX's, no way they would go with either the
antennae in or out of the fuse, put in an Airtronics 785 with the antennae
outside and got range, but barely, these are different beasts. I will order
a 92777 RX just to cover my base, Tom Copp says they are the way he goes and
that is what I will do. The second is the use of JR 368 digital servos. I
cannot imagine using any other servo for a minimum of flaps on any ship, and
would like to use more. They center better and give all the guts to throw
top actuated flaps that 80 degrees of throw you need. Remember that these
are the same size as 341's and what many thought 341's would be. I know
that another top actuated flap ship I had, 141's just could not do it, these
are incredible little packages. I would guess the next size up of this
series, a midsize that would fit many wings, is just as good and has even
more torque.

Want to thank Tom and Pat McCleave for some help on the electronic
questions, looking forward to PHX with the ship, should be a rip.

6 degrees EDA per side seems low to me too. I'd be inclined to double that figure and
also enlarge the vertical tail height by 50% to increase the yaw damping. There is a
wide range of opinion on the correct size of vertical tail and dihedral. My preference
is for more tail and dihedral than you typicaly see.
