Got to put some trim flights on the new Icon (WOW!), we also had the pleasure of having David McCarthy fly with us. He got his first tast of aerotowing and seemed to really enjoy it. He also hooked a booming thermal with my Tragi off the zip-start and specked out. Regards, John Diniz -Original Message- From: James V. Re: [RCSE] Stiff Aileron
When I score my hinge lines I but an exacto blade backwards in the handle. This leaves the square end that will scrape rather than cut and will be about 1/32 wide allowing better flexing in the hinge. You'll need to use the knife again to remove more of the epoxy. It'll take some time, but it will work. You probably want to avoid cutting the aileron completely off and using a tape hinge, but you can cut the aileron so it's ALMOST off. Make a series of 1 cuts leaving 1/2 between them. This way the aileron is still attached via the skin, but not as much as it is in its current configuration. I've talked with another Emerald pilot in my club and followed his advice, but the stiffness is still there. So far I have flexed the aileron back and forth several hundred times. I also used a dull x-acto blade to score a line on the inside of hinge. Does anyone have any other suggestions that might work? [RCSE] big air day...foamie version of the Icon?
I got a report yesterday of a pilot who managed to get around 1,000' altitude using what must be the foamie version of the Icon Using a bungee, he launched his WindRider Bat, hooked up in that big air in Michiagan and took it to around 1,000'. Now if you guys are dying to have the latest and greatest edge to get incredible thermal performance but with out the worries of using an Icon for DS, the waiting period is NOT 18 months and the price has been raising with each order. It does use the latest molding technologies, and by the wayis far more durable than an Icon! For $1,800 plus about, you can buy27 of them! Waiting period? About two weeks at the most. Yep you too could be posting about the fun you had in the country's recent thermal energy boom for about $65 or so. Lots of Icon owners have switched to it...for DS :-) There was at least one on the DS slope in Frankfort, Ky yesterday. Mine isn't orange, or green, it's red white and blue (same as my Pike) but here's the cool thing! You can make it any color you want! Yep no having to 'settle' for which ever color is available! Okay so JW didn't design the foil or planform, and the tail moment is kind of short compared to an Icon (or Pike) and to tell the truth the Bat works best on the slope, but that thumb in Michigan showed that a piece of foam with a slab of lead 2"x 2"x 1/4" in the nose, covered with precisionly placed chunks of tape can thermal ...if there's lift...and that it doesn't take big bucks to have fun on a 'big air day' :-) Wish I could have been thereTroy!...and Paul and Rudy and Bruce and Ken, and Hank and Gordy Windy in Dallas today
[RCSE] FW: F3J - 9CAP (butterfly) - 90 degree flaps.
Wondering if someone could help or already had problems on trying to get full flap servo travel on the 9cap for channel 5. The plane is a brand new eraser xtreame dbox +tail, futaba 9cap, futama PCM receiver and hitec 5125 digital servos. Mode is Glid2flp. Here is the challenge, at least to me :). Before activating all mixes, I assembled the right wing flap, connected to channel 3 to test geometry and full deflection. Perfect 90 degrees ...looking ok, time for the left flap..same thing, connect on channel 3 to test and 90 degree. Both flaps tested !!! Ok, easynow time to mount the plane and start playing with the mixes. Right flap on channel 5, Left flap on channel 6, right aileron on ch1 and left on ch7. Activating butterfly...here is the problem... can't find a way to make the servos connected on channel 5 and 6 to have the same travel as when they were connected on ch3. Seems like the 9cap limits the total travel on channel 5 and 6. Function end point only works at one end of the travel no effects on the other. On butterfly, tried to set the flap to 100%, but at 60% the servo is already at max travel...but mechanical, the servo still has a lot of travel to go. Re: [RCSE] 2 meter / servo question
I don't think I would use anything less then the 81's for ailerons. Prob would go with metal gears, as I'm not that good a pilot. I also like the 85MG for flaps on a 2-meter. .bc([EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.widomaker.com/~conk Williamsburg, VA 23185 On Fri, 16 Apr 2004, Douglas, Brent wrote: I'm taking a Spirit Elite (kit version) out of mothballs, and I'm rewiring / replacing servos in the wing. I don't plan on sloping with this, just flatland flying, from a winch. If I only use flaps for my launch mode, will this be enough to keep the ailerons working (as opposed to stripping these servos on the launch)? I don't fly this ship much, and I had the 55s - just don't want to tempt fate too much by not giving it enough servo. Opinions? Thanks, Brent RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] 2 meter / servo question
Hi Brent, I am using Futaba S3103( 3106 or 3107, they are all the same and very similar to Hitec HS55 ) on the ailerons of my 1.5m all-molded mini Corado sloper. Never had any problem in flight or launching with strong Hi-start but the aileron servos ALWAYS strip if the plane hits the ground hard enough on the nose. No ! the wing didnt touch the ground in the process but both aileron servos would strip. I guess the servo gears are not strong enough to withstand the momentum of the ailerons during impact. As the ailerons of this plane also function as spoilers, the required aileron throw is larger than usual so the push rods have to be hooked to the outer holes of the servos arm. I believe thats the cause of the problem. The same type of servos are used on the ailerons of my 1.5m Omega HLG and despite the fact that its tail boom has broken twice in nose-first landing, the aileron servos survived the impact. This is probably due to the more flexible wing structure of this plane and the fact that the aileron pushrods are hooked closer to the servos output shaft. RE: [RCSE] FW: F3J - 9CAP (butterfly) - 90 degree flaps.
I've, too, had some weird experiences with Futaba. 2 years ago I bought a 9C and tried to set it up with a full house sailplane with V-tail. It would not work and when I called Hobbico they advised that there was a bug in the program that would not allow it to work with a V-tail. They traded me for a 8U super that did work. Recently I tried to add differential to my V-tail per instructions in Don Edberg's book. In addition to some rather strange travel results it caused my rudder trim to reverse direction. This was confirmed by Hobbico who had no remedy and said this particular bug was also in the 9C. They claimed that simply using the V-tail setting caused the rudder trim to reverse but I did not find that. As for flap travel, I get full travel but I can't remember if I had to use some trick such as the OFFSET function. I suggest you get Edbergs book for the 8U. Hobbico said the programming was the same in the 8U and the 9C that only the interface was different. [RCSE] how to? -- spoilers for a BOT

I would appreciate any advice to install spoilers on my BOT. what would be the best size and location? should I use 2 microservos on the wing? Hmmm. The only v-tail bug I've ever heard about involved elevator compensation on a v-tail when crow was used (one side of the v-tail would more more then the other). I know lots of people who use the 9C on a v-tail full house glider with no problems. As I understand it, the current 9C does allow V-tail in a full house sailplane. It was the first run of the 9Cs that had the V-tail/sailplane bug. The current ones still have the rudder trim reversal bug. RE: [RCSE] how to? -- spoilers for a BOT
Oscar, I would think the best solution to your problem will be to cut flaps into the trailing edge of the inner wing panels. Just cut them out, face them with balsa, face the new trailing edge of the wing with balsa, add 2 metal geared servos such as HS85MG, recover everything add a tape hinge and you're done. This solution will work best if you have a computer radio and can mix in some down elevator to the flaps. Good luck with it and good luck in your first contest.
