[RCSE] Launch height ...
Guys ... and Gordy ;-) ... on Sunday we went out to practice launching and landing. Conditions were quite good with winds building up to 20 knot winds as the day went on. I've been gradually trying to improve my launch technique and at the same time modifying the winch to try to achieve higher launches. I have now made three drums of 46, 50, 55 and have clam shells to take the 50mm drum to 60mm dia. All this practice has shown to me that you need to change the drum size dependant on the wind strength. Although you obviously don't need all the number of drums that I've made. I haven't gone down to a smaller drum size as yet because I feel that I would be able to create too much line tension and break the line. I have been however trying a few launches where I have kited up for a period and then driven it up the rest of the way to gain line speed off the top. In this case I believe that a smaller drum might be of some use as I don't seem to be able to accelerate the model enough at the top to get a maximum height launch. Launch height achieved at the moment with kiting is only about 280 m Realize however that the lines that we use are mono and we have found a line that has exceptional stretching capabilities. Well last Sunday I finally broke the 300m height barrier with one launch of 322 m. I will however admit to having the help of the wind and a massive thermal on launch. All heights are measured using a LoLo sampling at 0.2 secs Getting there ... slowly. Eddie the Eagle in sunny South Australia RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Re: Foam Defects
I still suspect pressure may be a variable for this light foam and layup. However, if I had to blame one thing, the most likely culprit is handling the cores while peeling the mylars. If you have to slide your finger under the mylar to get it off, you may have a problem. I still think that this is your real problem - If you have to slide your finger under the mylar to get it off, you may have a problem. Not the vacuum, not the foam. I told you at the very beginning of this quest that you are probably damaging the wing when you remove the mylars. You are sliding your fingers under the mylar with your nails towards the wing and you run your nails on the surface of the wing, correct? This is not a problem with heavy skin, but is a no-no with a very light wing skin. Regards, Oleg. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. You are sliding your fingers under the mylar with your nails towards the wing and you run your nails on the surface of the wing, correct? This is not a problem with heavy skin, but is a no-no with a very light wing skin. Regards, Oleg. Yup, that's apparently a significant part of the problem. I'm not yet completely convinced it's the only problem. But based on your feedback and comments from others, that's been a point to watch very carefully. The light layup is definitely a challenge, especially with 15psi foam. In checking my previous notes from ~ 2 years back, the skin layup was heavier and the foam was Foamular 250. Even with the occasional 'finger assist' on the release, I hadn't seen this problem. So the school of hard knocks has finally taught me what you guys already knew. That's where RCSE has been very valuable. This particular configuration is somewhat rare so it may not be generally useful for most applications. But someday it will come in handy. Your comments (and patience) are appreciated. Right now, I'm not having any problems with Dow 25psi with any layup or at any pressure. However, even with a very good release and very careful handling, I still find an occasional defect with Foamular 150 and higher vacuum with a light layup. Since the bulk density is indistinguishable, there's just no reason for me to use the 150 for wings right now. Thanks again for everyone's input. Just cut three wing sets using the AG12-13-14 sequence. The cutting went well. I expect the bagging will too. - Dave R RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. This is not a problem with heavy skin, but is a no-no with a very light wing skin. Thank you Oleg for joining the public forum with this information. The bit about digging fingernails into the wing skin hadn't made it into the public domain until now. I agree completely that this could cause some significant defects/dents in a HL wing. Another point that should be added; If the dents are being made any time after the wing is bagged, then they should steam out. If they were there before or made during the cure cycle they probably wouldn't steam out. I think that Dave may have said in an earlier post that some of the defects did steam out. [RCSE] Re: Steaming Foam Dents
If the dents are being made any time after the wing is bagged, then they should steam out. Yes, most of them will steam out quite easily. Actually, all it takes is a hot air gun. The few that still show up (only with the last batch of 15psi foam) are much more difficult to get out. That, and not sliding anything under the mylars anymore as per Oleg's advice, are the reasons I'm not sure all of the defects are coming from handling. However, it's pretty clear now that the worst ones were as described. This practice, albeit a poor one, had not caused the problem with the heavier skins and more robust foam used earlier. In hindsight, this should not have been a surprise. Hmm, wonder what they'll think at the dump when all these pink wing parts show up next week? The Aegea wing that I got from Phil Barnes came with no bevel to allow reflex on the flaps. How much reflex have any of those who fly the Ava/Aegea provided? The wing is a piece of art, and I look forward to having it ready to fly whenever the rains in central Texas finally stop.

I must be nuts getting in the middle of this. I too have high regard for both Tom and his wiring harnesses. I have one of the first new connector fitted Icon's. Mine has worked flawlessly and I enjoy the plug and play. Given that in the grand scheme of things, these are side ventures for all involved (save Don Peters). I don't see that huge economic gains or losses are at stake here. Both seem good products to me. I'm grateful that all these things are available so I can have fun with my toys. Uh, the new ones with the DB-15 computer monitor connectors are not Hoopes connectors. I have ICON's with both styles, I have not flown the new one yet. The apparent difference here is the center panel now plugs into the fuse and makes connection, the old style you connected the connectors, stuffed them and the wires in the fuse, and bolted the center panel on. I don't like to change things that work well, but this is the way the ICON is delivered now days. Bad thing here is I can't field swap ICON parts in the field with this new connector, so that wing is now for that fuse only. And with my last ICON I also took delivery of a new molded Image (ya, not an ICON 2m but it is painted to look like my ICON's), believe it or not, it came with a Hoopes connector. Yep, I know that, I wasn't clear in my post. The new Van Leeuwen connector has served me well; flown at this year's NATS and many times since. I was trying to point out, that I agree that Tom makes fine connectors; also the new Van Leeuwen connector has worked fine for me. It is possible that both these connectors are fine products. After the following question were raised these are my responses: 1. Send payment to my home address. That person sent it to my companies PO Box. First error. Yap, your only right statement in this whole thing. I did send to wrong address and I stated that in my first RCSE post. 2. An email was sent to this person, saying Postal Money Order. They sent a check. Even though he said he sent a money order, see below. Second error, maybe two errors for this one, I'll count it as one. You had better examine that bank note again Roy, it is a Money Order (MO) from the Bank of Edwardsville IL, now if their MO does not work what does? If that MO is not as secure as any from the Federal Government I will eat it... 3. He sent the check to a PO Box in Britol, TN, not Bristol, IN, the address was not written clearly. Probably why it took so long to arrive in the first place. Third error. Everything else I send gets where it is suppose to fine, and if it went to TN no one looked at the zip code obviously, and it made the turn around quick to you... 4. He did not include a note with an address for the kits to be sent to. The return address on the envelope was unreadable. Fourth error. Oops, why just not ask, that is easy...e-mail I think would work. And you gave a quote on shipping $'s so you could figure a total bill, so you had my shipping address at some point. 5. I only knew who the envelope (payment) came from, because the check had his name on it. Fifth error. Lets see, the amount was for $XXX that you specified, and my name was on the note line, not the authorization line that was signed by a bank official. 6. Even though I said Postal Money Order only, they send a check and then make the check out to someone else, not me. Sixth error. If that is the case you might want to check again if that MO came from me, mine was made to Roy Simpson, maybe that is not my MO? 7. Payment (I use that term loosely) arrived in 10 days, not 5 days as stipulated. Seventh error. You never stipulated how many days it had to get there, who does? I will admit I would have expected it sooner, but Skip Miller, Barry Kennedy, Larry Jolly, Cliff Bryan and others have not worried about how long my payments were in transit to them... Sad to say, this person still thinks I screwed up the deal. Lets see, who started to sell my selected kits out from under me? There was no way I could respond to your first e-mail Saturday AM since a second e-mail was already there saying that one kit was sold to someone else and I shut down the sale at that point when I arrived home about 2:00pm. Additionally, I was not going to make any move with out the bank doing a search for the MO and if any action had been taken with it, that was started today. Remember, I am the only one out any money at this point and you were out nothing, remember patience is golden! Seems that this person is posting this trash on every forum he can find. I am interested to hear what other forums, I am only on this international forum Roy, how can I be posting elsewhere? Why do you not send some posts here so all can see... [RCSE] Re: Icon wiring harnesses
To quote Barry Anderson - I must be nuts getting in the middle of this. But this is no surprise to those of you who know me. What some of you may not know is that I have also piddled with wiring harnesses through the years as a small part of my job. Don Peters just sent me a new Icon, to replace one that I stuffed through pure stupidity. He asked me if I would like a really light one, the answer seemed obvious as I already had a medium one. He delivered a very light one, as promised. Very skinny paint. He goes to a lot of trouble to wring the last few grams out of a plane, and I appreciate it. I've had Icons with both the old and new style harness. They are both very competently done, and both robust. They are also both heavy. This is a good thing when it comes to wire - copper is heavy, and when you pay for good wire you get what you pay for by weight to a certain extent. But alas, not exactly what I wanted in a very light plane. Long story short, I put the plane on a copper diet. It was pretty easy to remove a couple ounces from the Icon harness, and still have a harness that should work. I didn't modify an existing harness, I started over. I could have taken more weight out, but hopefully I stopped short starting a fire when I pull the flap stick back. Is it still robust? I think so, and time will tell. Will I build any more for other people? No. Will I tell you what I did? If you have to ask then it would not be prudent. Is my Icon lighter than yours? Yes, I'd bet that it is. Will an Icon that weighs 69 ounces fly better than one that weighs 72 ounces? It will if I put it in the right piece of air, at the right speed. happy trails - Rob Glover RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Both are cash purchased documents of money transfer I believe and guarenteed. 2) Even though you stated that you are keeping the Cashiers Check, as proof that I am some felon, I think that it is appropriate that it be mailed back to me for proper disposal, don't you? RE: [RCSE] Cashier's Check vs. Money Order
I don't usually like to meddle, but frankly - I'm getting tired of this. Is it *really* appropriate to bring/keep this to the exchange? Please resolve your issues on your own, and come to the list if you have no other available options. - Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 22, 2004 20:56 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [RCSE] Cashier's Check vs. Money Order Roy, Well, come to find out I sent Roy a Cashiers Check not a Money Order, could of fooled me. Marc, I feel your pain. I knew he was a jerk. I did not think he was a ripoff artist as well. Man, what a piece of work. Best wishes Marc, and -don't- stress out. People like him are not worth -your- health. Jeff = --- Jeffrey D. Is it *really* appropriate to bring/keep this to the exchange? Sure is. Please resolve your issues on your own, and come to the list if you have no other available options. - Dave No. Post here. Especially if you are trying to keep others from getting f'd and cost him business. Yes indeed. It is a public service to post here! And if this is all resolved as a 'snmall misunderstanding', then YES, please post that here as well! Often going public is the only way to attempt to shame dip-sticks like this into doing the right thing. Unfortunately since he is already going out of business he just gets to laugh all the way to the bank... unless he rips off a lawyer who can file a complaint for himself for free we can only hope. = --- Jeffrey D.
