[RCSE] Winch launching... thanks!
All the negative stuff that gets posted where (some deserved Roy!) I thought I post a positive I learned right here. To the person who posted a few weeks ago, or months, whatever, about changing to my left foot for the pedal since I launch right handed. THANK FRIGGIN YOU I think he was with the CRRC. For me winching launching was a frightening experience every single time. When launching with my right foot I'd stumble backwards or otherwise lose balance 50% of the time. I approached winching each time with trepidation. I switch to standing sideways with my left shoe on the pedal and tossing the plane almost over my head as it pulls. It works GREAT! Knock on wood, now launching is no big deal. I just have to work on throwing it straight ahead (I tend to toss it to the left - sometimes WAY to the left). Really I don't recall your name, but thanks. That article was a revelation and shows again, sometimes the net is worth is weight in gold. :) Best wishes, = --- Jeffrey D. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone remember the Mark Allen Falcon 600? Any comments about how it flies? Anyone build one electric? thanks- Kristopher I remember the Falcon 600 well. I flew one in 2m for several years and really liked the way it flew. Bob McGowen flew one for many years and could beat most unlimited ships with it. Built straight and properly set up, they are a very nice flying 2m full house sailplane. The one piece wing is a bit of a nuisance in getting it in and out of your shop (watch out for doorways) and it needs something a bit bigger than a small car to carry it comfortably, although I did carry mine in my Celica Hatchback. The electric conversion is doable, I suppose but it will be really tight fitting the batteries in that small, slim fuselage. Personally, I'd just build it as a pure sailplane and enjoy it. I think you'll really like it. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] The value of a Wind Gauge
so I have to wonder, outside of having a cool gadget, would one of these digitals or Dwyer tubes actually be of much real USE to me? For TD?Nope but its the season to buy silly stuff we are likely never to use especially for $10 :-)For Slope Racing and I suppose F3J and F3B, where wind equals launch line tactics. For TDThe 'grand' idea is to be able to check the wind speed and then calculate the exact amount of ballast needed for your particular sailplane, best done by leaving the field and sitting in front of the CRT... :-) When in fact most of us would rather just fly. Having calculated the exact wing loading won't get us another minute of task time or 10 more landing points...practicing in high winds will. Having practiced in crappy high wind weather, then it becomes clear what the 'value' of ballast is. Gordy
Re:Re: [RCSE] Alternate Source for the Digital Wind Gauge
I was wondering myself about just how useful these are, especially the lower-priced ones. For some time now I have been eyeing the Dwyer clear plastic tube/pith ball type meters in the Sporty's Pilot Shop catalogs and Hobby-Lobby web site... I have so far always wound up prioritizing for something else like an extra servo, etc. I take it these radio shack models are not anemometer types, but use some kind of thermistor or similar sensor? Haven't seen any yet. I usually as a rule don't try to fly in over 20 MPH winds... I can *DO* it, but the extra worry about damage and repair costs or losing it landing off-field takes too much of the fun out of it for me, EPP or not. I have enough good visual cues around my neighborhood: powerplant smokestacks. high flagpoles, treetops, etc... that I can tell pretty well if it's go or no-go conditions from my driveway, and I don't have any slopes available to me... so I have to wonder, outside of having a cool gadget, would one of these digitals or Dwyer tubes actually be of much real USE to me? [RCSE] Old Favorite Dwyer Liar.
Ya know, the old tried an true unit from Dwyer. Jokingly referred to as the Dwyer Liar really isn't bad. It doesn't require batteries, isn't fragile and costs about $9.95. It'll tell ya if there's wind. Re: [RCSE] Alternate Source for the Digital Wind Gauge
You can usually get a Radio Shack store to do a computer search on where are the nearest stores which have out-of-stock items. I did this in the Austin area today, and did find one store which had a few (I bought most of them for the Austin Silent Flyers members).
[RCSE] Alternate Wind Gauge Supplier
There appears to be an alternate supplier for the discontinued RS unit but at ~ $20: http://www.science-city.com/diwiga.html For about 2X there's the La Crosse Technology EA-3010 Handheld Wind Meter. At $40 (from several retailers) it's about the lowest priced unit using anemometer technology. Range is 0.4 to ~ 67 mph. Google for several different suppliers. Not sure, thats the fun of doing reviews :-) Gordy From the review below, it was originally $29.99, the reduced to $19.99, I got it for $9.99, and likely other Radio Shacks will have it at this price. Re: [RCSE] air travel, transporting RC a/c
I have used an archery bow case for about a dozen trips from Nashville Tennessee to Sacramento, California while flying on three different airlines without damage to a model. The bow case was checked as luggage without additional charge. Paid less than $30 for mine at Kmart about 10 years ago. Maximum length of any component is limited to about 52 inches. My models all had four piece wings with a 48 inch long fuselage. The last one was designed to fit in the bow case and had a 132 inch wing span when assembled. Chuck Anderson At 11:26 PM 11/19/2004, you wrote: What have people come up as far as novel methods for transporting a/c for jet-travel? I went to Illinois, where I had a GP Slinger ("flying wing") mailed to my address. Darn thing was so well thought out, I had the thing assembled quickly (some people claim 30 minutes)..2 wing sections connected with slip-fit Al tubes & wings taped together. Almost like these fancy glider ships (wings slip-fit with reinforcement rods, followed by some "tape"). http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2922634 "I had the kit shipped to me in Illinois, built it, & flew for my friends. Then, I disassembled it, & took the Slinger box as a carry-on back home to California. The modular system made the Slinger a portable e-flier for jet-travel. No hassle in packing a 48" wing (say, as a check-in)." So, I guess I found a plane which could be assembled/disassembled quickly..& be taken as a *carry-on*. Not a check-in. I remember seeing the European fliers at the HLG World Meet (Poway, CA): lots of fancy cases shipped as check-in? (or was it pre-shipped freight). I used the original box, which came out 48" (l+w+h), which is technically 3" over the 45" limit for AA (American Airlines) carry-on. I could stash it in the front of the plane, in the closet where business-types put their suit-hangars. I'd like to hear some "examples" where people have used innovative transportable a/c and/or creative packing techniques to transport on an airline. Some of these smaller e-planes could be squeezed into a carryon. I was in Illinois (breezy & windy), so the 48" wing was pretty much the smallest plane I could use. I had a devil of a time flying the wing in those swirly midwestern winds, it was a completely different feel from where I usually fly (Rose Bowl in Pasadena). That's a question I have. At those big glider meets, how do people transport these big gliders? Do they pay extra for a check-in box which can accomadate those planes? -- byen00 byen00's Profile: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=5856 View this thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=300832 RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Antenna Wire
>>Been told that wire guage has no impact on reception, >>curious to know if that's true or not. Yes, it is true. But for mechanical reasons multistrand is preferred. Insulated is also not required but is preferred for both mechanical and electrical reasons. Generally speaking you can use most any conductor. I've used music wire too, when the installation lended itself to do so. I know one guy who used the burglar alarm window foil. Re: [RCSE] RE: Hoopes wiring harness, ...
Well I have to chime in here... First you can get the Hoopes connectors with the DB-15 or the other black connector. Dammit Jim I am a Doctor not an electrician, and can not think of the names of the black plugs Tom uses right now..lol As to the "New" Wiring harness I will NEVER order another Icon again with that POS harness in it I will only get it with the Hoopes or an equivalent. Here's is my reason. I have a Few Icons all with the Hoopes connectors ( and a few other birds...lol) and never had a failure due to the connectors in over 1000 hours of flying my Icons, now brain fade that is a another thread unto it's self. But when I got my newest Icon (pre NATS) with that P.O.S. new harness read that as a Non-Hoopes. I had two failures in the first two day's of flying. Compared to the Hoopes the quality of this new harness is terrible Don what in the He.. were you thinking. I ended up tearing out that "new" harness with the third failure. I have heard of two others with Icons doing the same, but I do not remember who they were. I guess I got use to Millspeck quality. So if you order a Icon make sure you get the Hoopes with the DB-15 not the "new" wire set. I don't like to change things that work well, but this is the way the ICON is delivered now days. Bad thing here is I can't field swap ICON parts in the field with this new connector, so that wing is now for that fuse only. And with my last ICON I also took delivery of a new molded Image (ya, not an ICON 2m but it is painted to look like my ICON's), believe it or not, it came with a Hoopes connector.
I use magnet wire from radio shack, very light and cheap. Scrape the insulation off with a knife. Been told that wire guage has no impact on reception, curious to know if that's true or not. Re: [RCSE] Hoopes and Maple Leaf's website
Just as a side note, the Icon page at www.mapleleafdesign.com still describes the airframe as including a "Hoopes" wing harness. "Also included are a unique 44 ounce ballast system, a complete wiring harness by Hoopes Designs, flush-mounted wing servo covers " It's pretty clear now that for whatever reasons this is not the case, and hasn't been for a while. Dan (Icon coveter, and quality wing harness appreciator) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What more can be said, Hoopes connectors are made of metal and plastic and are soldered to wire with insulation on it. The harnesses come in plastic bags that are real clear. Included are some very detailed instructions, Tom is a neat packer of stuff. I was going to order an Icon till I heard the rumor that Hoopes connectors didn't seem to work very well in them, and no way would I fly a sailplane without Hoopes connectors! I use Hoopes connectors in all my Pikes, and well every other ship I have, short of foamies. They don't seem to work very well for me, cuz I keep on losing contests and it couldn't be my flying skills. I love you Tom Hoopes, now can I have your beer? Gordy Flew today in cloudy but warm Louisville...with Hoopes connectors.
RE: [RCSE] RE: Hoopes wiring harness, ...
Off topic slightly, but for what it is worth: the molded 6 meter scale ships by LET all come standard with mini sub-D 15 pin wing to fuse connectors pre wired and installed in the plane, with JR plugs on the servo end and optionally on the RX end. These ships are roughly twice the cost of a simple molded TD airframe. The point being, this is not rocket science, none have ever failed to my knowledge. Sometimes simple is OK. It's all good...
