RE: [RCSE] MS Outlook question
A little over 20 years ago, I wrote an airfoil plot program for the Commodore 64. I soon ported it to the Atari, TRS80, and other computers using the 6502 computer chip except for the Apple II. Apple, in it's infinite wisdom, crippled the operating system so that basic programs could not send graphics to printers without special machine language routines. I soon ported the program to MS-DOS computers and even to the original 128k Mac. The only computer that had trouble running my program was the Mac. Every month or so, Apple would issue an upgrade to the Mac operating system that required changes to my program. By 1988, I decided that I was selling enough programs to justify purchasing a real computer and evaluated everyone that I could afford. The choices boiled down to the second generation Mac, the Amiga with the MS-DOS option, and a Gateway 2000. I really didn't like the Mac that much and didn't like Apple's record of abandoning users of their earlier computers. (Applle III, Lisa, and the 128K Mac). Cost ruled out the Amiga so I wound up buying the very first Gateway 2000. I have never regretted the decision because the programs II wrote for the first Gateway will still run on my new Dell computer. I can also use most of the software I bought over the last 20 years. [RCSE] Software is important (Was MS Outlook question)
Harley asked a simple question and got his answer. (Pat) He figured it out almost immediately -- he got a post in before anyone replied. That's not the point. my software is better than yours Yes, discussing software may be off-topic for RCSE except that if you happen to maintain a web site for a soaring club you also get to be the unofficial IT person for the (soaring) club for that percentage of members who've got computers but can't access the club site, get emails, send mails and so on. Since this is a waste of time -- it may be useful and important to the club but its still a waste of my time -- I for one am always looking for short cuts, ways to simplify the operation of people's systems so they aren't a nuisance. The prime suspects when there is trouble are invariably Microsoft or AoL. So like the cure for your head hurting because you persistently bang it against a brick wall, the cure is just to stop doing it. Unfortunately people are reluctant to change, you often have to work with what they're willing to do, but there's no harm in getting the word out to cut down on the number of questions later. RE: [RCSE] MS Outlook question
It's funny...that is the objections that most people raise. The move to Intel has done a lot to make the transition easier for people because all the new Macs can also run Windows. But the latest surveys show that few people actually do that. People make the move, comforted by the ability to run Windows but when they start using OS X, they find that they can do everything they need to do right there and bye bye Windows. Here at Twango, our employees are at about 50/50 Mac vs PC and it all works together just fine. When you get down to it, people need to: 1) send/receive email 2) browse the Web 3) work with MS Office documents (word, excel, powerpoint, etc) 4) organize their music 5) organize their pictures and video MS Office is available for OS X. Everything else is bundled with your Mac right out of the box. Now, the exceptions are people who have custom-written software that they need for business that absolutely has to run on Windows. The solution for that is Parallels, a new virtual machine environment that uses the new virtualization hardware built into the Intel core duo chip. WAY faster than the old software emulation such as in Virtual PC. All I know is that by making the switch years ago, I'm spending more time actually doing stuff with my computer and a lot less time fighting with it. --Jim -Original Message- From: Lighthorse [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 7:30 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Soaring @ airage.com; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [RCSE] MS Outlook question Same Problem. Re: [RCSE] MS Outlook question
I stopped using Outlook some years ago, I use Thunderbird, a free mail program. (I also use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer). Its easy to use, flexible, its got a good junk filter and unlike Microsoft's programs it will not execute anything that comes to it. (A lot of computer problems have been caused by MSFT's insistence on 'push' technologies where incoming information can run programs on your computer. Its supposed to enhance the user experience but in practise it causes innumerable security headaches.) The only reason for using Outlook is if you were on a corporate mail system that mandated that you had to use it. For the rest of the time you are better off using Anything But Microsoft. [RCSE] MS Outlook question...ANSWERED!
My Outlook is this, I am off to the UP of Michigan in the morning for some beach demo'sand my Perfect will be here just after I leave, that means my inbox will be Perfectly full and my out box will be empty of a parts that I could be outfitting in motel rooms along the way. Yesterday I flew most of the day, then installed bottom horns on my Sharon, programmed all my planes into my new TX (finally) and iced all the parts damaged from my cliff dive with an ATV during my family outing in Colorado this past week. But before I leave today I will be heading to the Hobby Shop to get a new piece of joiner material for my 2M Laser, which I lost in the grass yesterday. I'm not sure which file that one goes into, but my Laser doesn't have a firewall. Gordy

[RCSE] MAC - long and off topic (I can't help myself)
I've put up with a lot of different kinds of machines and software during the last 30 years. The truth is that most all computers are a pain in the ass, and, as far as what computers did or didn't do ten, twenty or more years ago... who cares? It's irrelevant. All do about the same things NOW. Windows machines are cheap and work OK but require a LOT of OS (operating system) maintenance. Macs are very dependable and do things very well but fewer software titles are available - which is OK, cause most folks use only Email and Browsers anyway. New Macs will run windows software. Macs cost about twice as much as a comparable windows machine but require very little OS maintenance at all... which begs the question How much is my time worth. When I can afford it, I'm getting a dual core Mac and will phase out as many (Windows) programs as possible. Those programs which will run only under Windows can still be run on this Mac, however. Like my parents said: When they declared WAR on POVERTY, We surrendered we had enough! With Windows, It is and will always be the S-O-S, and I've had enough. I now recommend Macs to most non-gearheads (ya know, normal people, unlike most of us). I do not hate Microsoft nor Windows but just don't wan't to waste time maintaining computers anymore. JR transmitters are positive shift. This is not the transmitter module, but it is in the encoder before the module. You can actually modify the JR transmitters by adding a phase shifter. RE: [RCSE] DARTS SUN CONTEST
We should have Saturday's scores quickly, but it was a very tight weekend - 19 points seperated first and second for the 2 days - combined. Ron Mong took Saturday , on a day where the lift was sketchy at best. Karl Miller was the most consistent of the group, and for this weekend that's saying something - his third and second place on Saturday put him at the top for the weekend. A lot of good flying on a weekend that makes the DARTS field hard, especially if you don't like landing downhill. Thanks to all the out of towners coming in for their OVSS points - really made the contest. Only dark spots were a lost scratch built Supra* and the demise of Ray Hayes's beautiful, red Sky Bird - I thnk the dozen vultures circling over the turnarounds may have distracted him a bit at launch. As always, thanks to the folks at JR - their support really adds some class to the OVSS events. Brent * I will walk that field again before it's harvested - would love to get Greg back that ship.
