[RCSE] Flying weather :-)

2008-02-26 Thread Craig Allen
It was so nice today I took the half day off.. I only can work 4 hours a day
since I broke my back...

Changed the oil in the old 63 convertible, drove to the local park were gliders
all started for me back some 38 years ago ( Right Wev ?) and flew The Worlds
Oldest Sharon for the first time in 2 years... Checked out whether it really
did launch better off a high-start with no camber... Yep it does :-)

Caught a few thermals over the nature area with some big turkey vultures and
called it a day... It might be nice elsewhere, but nothing beats California
Baby :-)

USING A HI START WITH A 3 M MOLDIE

When the flaps are down the airfoil is changed to a High Lift - High Drag
airfoil. On a strong winch the High Lift gives a good launch since the winch
can overcome the High Drag. But on a hi start there is too much drag to get
to the High Lift part of the curve, so best launch is with the flaps up to
have a Low Lift - Low Drag condition.

Its comfortably warm and sunny in Thousand Oaks, California.

Don't believe the sensational journalistic copy about global warming,
its not going to make winters as we know them go away. (You always get
the stories at the beginning of winter before the first cold weather
hits.) I've got relatives that are living east of Saskatoon in Canada
and they've been below zero (C) (also most of the time F) since late
October. Its currently a balmy 19F (-7C) there and they've got another
month before they get up above freezing. The only good thing about being
up there is that the snow's granular so it blows around like sand rather
than having to be shovelled like wet concrete. They seem happy enough
but all the same I think I'll stay somewhere where the furnace going out
isn't a life threatening emergency.

[Fwd: Re: [RCSE] Re: Harley's "swan song"]

2008-02-26 Thread Harley Michaelis

--- Begin Message ---
Thanks, guys. You say nice things. I'm flattered. About that "swan
song". I'm still building and flying, but have too many eye problems to
effectively compete.

I just hit 87 last week on the 19th and still think I'm having more fun
than about anyone my age. The day before on the President's Day holiday,
I met with friends at a sod farm in the Tri-Cities (Pasco, Richland &
Kennewick) for first flights on my just finished, scratch-built, Smooth
Genie Pro #4 (See File 12 at http://genie.rchomepage.com/). That website
is dedicated to those who want to learn the fascinating and gratifying
art of scratch building. You do so by building one of the 5 thermal
competition ships. Read the file "What's a Genie" for the scoop on these
inexpensive and well-engineered sailplanes.

Just between us, a properly built SGP is a "secret weapon" that, if
offered ARF, might become very well received on the thermal competition
scene. . . . in my humble, unbiased opinion, of course. I have cores for
SGP #5 coming and have started making parts. Several innovations will be
incorporated. Ideas keep popping up to make them easier to build,
stronger, lighter, prettier and more capable.

#4 behaved from the first hand launch on and although was cold (it's
winter here in Washington state) thermals were encountered and the joy
of flight and flying friends again experienced.

I've been a widower since shortly after retiring and continually active
with RC sailplanes. After living alone, my place became a model airplane
facility disguised as a residence. I have an independent, long term
lady friend, Iris, who was born in England and as a child of 8
experienced the London blitz during WW2. She's "just a kid of 77"
(perspective changes with age), has accompanied me to many a contest
and knows the game. She's a great sport and kept me company on the trip
to the sod farm although it was wall to wall fog when we left. I bribed
her by offering to treat her to a BK Whopper and fries for lunch on the
way over. The sky turned blue when we got about half way. Fingers and
lips turned numb at the sod farm, but it sure was nice to be out and
flying.

It's a module that transmits on the 50 MHz (6 M) band, which requires
an amateur radio (Ham) license to use.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I was searching RC groups for pictures of the Mod-Pod (I'm building an
old kit I won on E-Bay) and found this thread. Harley, I want to thank
you so much for your designs. I built my first Mod Pod in the mid 70's
and learned to fly RC with it. I flew 100's of lights on that plane and
it gave me one of the most enjoyable summers ever. I flew it so much I
eventually wore out the Cox Medallion 049 that powered it. Others have
commented here on your competition designs, but for me the Mod Pod will
always be one of my favorite planes because of its simplicity, looks,
and fantastic adaptability to all types of RC gear and launch systems. A
truly great rugged little flyer that makes a perfect trainer.

Thanks again,

Jack,

Location for your molding supplies:

http://www.acp-composites.com/ACP-CAT.HTM

Their tooling epoxy is outstanding for building up the finished surface
of the mold. I highly recommend it. One warning -- this is a
stoichiometric epoxy mix (as opposed to a catalytic mix) -- this means
you want to get the ratios of the two parts pretty close to right on or
it will not set properly. This is not a problem, but it does not have
the "windage" that catalytic epoxy mixtures have.

Latex bladders are available from:

http://www.piercanusa.com/

If you resort to using a bladder, remember that your mold will require
substantially more reinforcement against the possible bursting force.
It doesn't take many psi's to get you into an exciting situation.

As to bubbles in your molded piece, I have molded a number of all
carbon (carbon finish) pieces (including fuselages) where surface
bubbles ruin the piece cosmetically. While it adds a little weight, I
have resorted to precoating critical areas with laminating resin and
allowing it to thicken to the point of nearly setting up before laying
in the fabric. This has worked pretty well.

Would laying 3/4 oz. cloth in first and allowing it to get green help? I
was just thnking if I could avoid this situation with some low pressure
device... saw where some stuff uses 300 psi... YOW!... I've seen some
things made inside a spinning mandrel where centripital force forced the
laminate against the mold, but there's a fin involved here, etc... It's
hell being a dadgum perfectionist...

So, how much should I buy? I am going to make a close copy of the
Dragonfly fuse, a Legionair pod mold, and a Condor mold. Sorry to be a

It ain’t over till it’s over. You forgot to tell them that it is still
snowing hard here in the Fort Denny.

John

P.S. Wife and I just got back from our walk and most of the trees have 4-5
inches on the limbs. The most beautiful snow of the season!

[RCSE] 2008 OVSS Schedule-Sponsored by JR Radio

2008-02-26 Thread Marc Gellart
The 2008 OVSS schedule is up on RC Groups, pretty much getting to be news
central for RC soaring.

Go to www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?+=82

Schedule has a nice spread of contests and time between each event, hope even
more fliers can make it.
