Futaba may offer a logging device, but it will not be needed with this

those
with extensive carbon structure.

[RCSE] Futaba 2.4s

2008-02-27 Thread DENDKN
I wrote a short article, Keep Your Carbon Fuselage, published in the January
issue of RC Soaring Digest explaining my very successful use of Futaba 2.4
systems in my existing sailplanes with carbon and carbon weave fuselages. In
my opinion, the Futaba RX antenna system is far superior, requiring only one
RX with its partially shielded extra length of the Futaba RX antennas. I
know that the JR/Spektrum 2.4 system can be made to work in carbon fuselages
with extra RX's located around with their short antennas properly placed. JR
even sells special hardware to help the modeler tell if the RX antenna
locations are OK. I sold my Spektrum systems and went to Futaba specifically
because
of the convenience of applying the RX antenna system in my existing
sailplanes. To date, my Futaba 2.4s have worked flawlessly without any extra
RX's
placed strategically around.

Hello All F5J Enthusiasts.

The Albuquerque Soaring Association (AMA#1965) is pleased to announce
the 2005 Albuquerque F5J Electric Soaring World Challenge, to be held
at the Gardner Turf Grass Farm, McIntosh, NM (8 mi S. of Moriarty) the
weekend of October 14-16, 2005. If you attended last year, you know
that this is an event not to be missed.

New to the contest will be the so-called Albuquerque Rules, in which
the pilot will have the opportunity to choose his motor run time within
a fixed working time window (10 or 15 min.). Flight points will be
determined by the pilot's gliding flight time (motor off) within the
remaining working time. Three classes of competition will be
available--Speed 400, 7-cell, and Unlimited.

This has proved to be a fun, yet challenging format--this year will be
no exception.

For more information and on-line registration, please go to:
http://www.soarabq.org/f5j_wc_2005/f5j_main.htm

This is an AMA-sanctioned event.

And a special favor to ask--
Whether or not you personally plan to attend, could you please pass
this announcement along to your fellow soaring entusiasts and F5J
colleagues and club officers for further distribution. We want to give
the widest opportunity for attending this high flying event.

See you in October!!!

Pat,

You can charge any size MiNH battery with seven or eight cells with the transmitter charge plug of the Sirius Pro. The charge rate won't exceed 2 amps with this charger which is not enough for primary MiNH large cell charging. We use other chargers to provide 5 amps needed for 2600 MiNH packs. I top off the packs on the way to the field with my Sirius Pro which I believe provides a superior final charge.

[RCSE] Skegs

2003-01-23 Thread DENDKN
I completely agree with Simon, Klaus and others that skegs are crutches for most of us who can't land without them on the ridiculous runways for lawn darts often used in major US contests.

We should adopt the FAI landing rules in US duration contests and forget skegs. Small (~1" high, 1/4" wide rounded) skids are quite sufficient for the FAI landing plan if you know how to land in a reasonable space. This would be much easier on our sailplanes and ourselves.

I have read here that the landing task is too easy, basically making it
a landing contest. Skegs could be considered an external aid (like a
crutch) to assist landing accurately.

It would sure be interesting to observe how an individual's flying skill
would increase if they actually had to manage the energy to land
accurately and on time without one. I would have thought that most would
have come to this conclusion, and made the landing task more difficult
by removing this "landing aid" to make the whole process more
challenging and no doubt more enjoyable.

The argument that a skeg prevents sliding through the landing area and
the dangers associated with this just points out that that particular
aircraft is out of control.

Klaus Weiss wrote:

I have often commented, lightheartedly, on the use of skegs. We do not use
skegs at all, in Australia. I have yet to see someone injured by a model
sliding through the spot on landing. Admittedly, we use FAI landing spots,
but even so!! If a model touches someone on landing, then it is zero landing
points. Perhaps skegs have their place in the USA formats, but I think that
there is a risk of pilots becoming so dependant on them for landing, that
they forget how to land well. I haven't seen a U.S. TD contest. Perhaps
there are models flying all over the place in the landing zone. Landing
upwind, downwind, crosswind, vertically, inverted??? Don't know. Maybe skegs
are necessary :) Maybe the landing zone is really the hazard zone.

Dave,

It is absolutely bunk that the Stratos SL has any structural weaknesses. We have been flying seven of them for up to two years with no structural wing or V-tail failures on launch. This sailplane is an excellent AMA thermal duration competitor. It also has a great speed range for flying contests with winds from 0 - 35 mph with proper ballast.

Sometimes I lose my balance launching my Stratos in adverse conditions and have to stand on the winch petal breaking our 300# winch line with a Rahm Winch powered by 3 deep cycle marine batteries.

Daryl is right.

Toady's sailplane contests are too focused on long (sometimes lucky) duration or die and tiny spot dorks.

The Triathlon contest format requires more strategy and tolerates less sailplane soaring efficiency and spot landing training. This format was further improved with the Max-Man contest format presented earlier in RCSD.

We have taken this format to a new level with higher max times up to 15 minutes were landings are scored progressively less toward the 1000 point round maximum. With a 15 minute flight there are no landing points and the flight is scored only on the precision time. We recently flew this event at a TULSOAR Club monthly contest and a Sportsman Contestant was second by only six points. We can send you a spread sheet if you want to consider trying this event. One disadvantage of this format is the time it takes to complete a round, which is not a problem for small contests.

I've been flying a Condor equipped with JR 351 servos in all six positions
for about 3 years. In the past 3 months, I've had two servos fail (left
flap and right aileron). While I had no problem landing the aircraft with
one failed servo, if it were the elevator servo that failed, I'd likely
loose the ship and I really don't want that to happen. I've got the two
failed servos. Does anyone have an idea what it would cost to have them
repaired or would I be better off to just replace the remaining for
servos. (I've already replaced two of them.)

I seem to recall being advised to contact Johnny Berlin for good prices on
JR servos. Does he have a web site?

George,

I just had 14 old JR 341 and 351 servos repaired for about $130.00. When reinstalling them, they still had the jitters so I replaced the them with Hitec 85MGs and JR 368s on flaps in a Stratos and all 85MGs in two Super Vs. All these sailplanes work fine with the new servos and no other changes.

Johnny Berlin can be reached by phone at 21-347-5842. He stocks JR and Hitec servos and gives prompt service.

Jerry,

As you know, I do not like skegs. Usually stopping in less than an inch travel, skegs give a severe shock to the sailplane and hard mounted electronics. I know of three competition sailplanes and one prominent contestant that have been physicaly damaged (or injured) this year caused by using skegs.

With normal ground - air turbulence, I only use tape-on skids to provide resistance and stop the sailplane, usually with some directional control, in a few inches rather than several feet.

Since we would have to land without skids or skegs at Chicago, I'm not interested.

I will sell you the four 141s for $90.00 without shipping.

2002-01-11 Thread DENDKN
I have been flying a Stratos SL-e for nearly two years (200 or more flights) with Volz Micro Maxx and Micro Max X servos with an Airtronics Vision and Stylus Systems. I much prefer the Micro Max X servos. Volz has a new servo, XP that is probably a further improvement. I have had some trouble with Micro Maxx servos, but the biggest problem with Volz is that there is no factory authorized repair service (Pardon me Gordy, I appreciate your efforts to help).

When setting up my backup Stratos SL-e, I have used JR 341s with JR 368 digitals for flaps. I am very satisfied with their performance on their first 25 flights using an Airtronics Vision System. My flying friends are using JR and Airtronics servos in their Stratos SL-e sailplanes for more than a year with excellent results.

It is very important to install the wing servos in removable mounts. It is a big mistake to glue them in, as recently recommended in SE Modeler, so that they are not easily removable for adjustment and repair.

My friend, Dave Otte is also building a Grand Esprit and we have discussed this problem. I flew Grands in many contests including the 1977 F3B World Championships in South Africa. I highly recommend that you use one larger diameter wing rod and stiffen the spar with carbon fiber. My friend, Dave Otte can give you the details on his modifications at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[RCSE] Electric Power

2001-11-22 Thread DENDKN
Aveox F12L Motor, M260 Controller, Graupner 45 mm Precision spinner and yoke with 14X9.5 Cam Prop, $375.00. This powerplant is suitable and has been used occasionally in a Jaro Muller Esprit Electric Sailplane weighing seven pounds. Using 1214 SCR 1250 battery packs, this system will provide two 30 second motor runs that achieve the same or better altitude than the best winch launches. I am selling this system to convert my Esprit to seven cell operation. This system has never been crashed or even a prop blade broken in use. ***November Special also including good 12 Cell SCR 1250 battery pack and shipping, $325.00***
