[RCSE] Southwest Classic Update, Friday Jan 1
Today was a busy practice day with crowded skies at Schnepf Farms. The sun was out early and planes took to the air soon after breakfast. It was a little breezy at times but the lift was still pretty tough to miss. Some high clouds helped to keep the temperature cool but it still was near 65 by afternoon. Tomorrow is predicted to be clearing in the afternoon with normal 5-10 winds and warmer. I posted more pictures from today from the field set up, practice flying and the hand launch golf contest. The golf outing winner was Joe Wurts one stroke ahead of Craig Greening and he was one stroke ahead of Paul Schulte. Final golf awards will be presented at the main ceremony on Sunday. Again, time is short so no great details on the photos. [RCSE] More Southwest Classic Contest Updates
More SWC info has been posted to the web site to answer many questions I am receiving. The link below goes straight to the page and covers the flight tasks, landing tasks, schedule of events, practice days and locations etc. The weatherman is predicting possible rain on Wednesday from a winter storm up north. They predict clear but cool through the weekend. The temp was 75 here in Phoenix today and the flying was great out at the club field. The highs on the SWC weekend may only be 64 or 65 so be advised. Night time temps at Schnepf Farms might be in the mid 30's but it warms up quick when the sun is out. The hand launch golf event on Friday is still accepting entries. http://www.swlink.net/~ghanson/golf.htm Additional SWC info: http://www.scalesoaring.com/swc2002/generalinfo.htm Dave Wenzlick Mesa AZ SWC home http://www.rcaz.com RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Southwest Classic Updates Feb 2-3 2002 Phoenix AZ
The official pilot's flight order is now posted on the web site. There are two lists with one sorted by last name and one sorted by flight order. The flight order list shows who will be flying in the assigned order. I did my best to separate everyone in the flight order. Please be flexible in choosing timers. Do NOT time for someone if you are due to fly less than 40 pilots away. Also remember that the flight order drifts from round to round as pilots don't always make their times. You may not always be able to time for your pilot in every round. We call up pilots as frequencies are open and will not wait for slow pokes. Please be flexible with us so we can keep the event moving. Remember, we need to launch a new pilot at least every 30 seconds or so to keep on schedule. The 14th Annual Southwest Classic will be held on Feb 2-3, 2002 at Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek AZ which is about 45 minutes SE of Phoenix. All the details can be found at the web site including an entry form. We have received almost 50 entries so far and several channels are full already so be sure to send some alternate choices if you have them. I will post an updated pilots list this weekend along with reserved RV spaces, vendor info, area maps and lodgings etc. The regular CASL club field is in Gilbert AZ at Rodeo Park. Re: [RCSE] BD5 MA
I agree with all the nice comments about my Slickraft BD-5J except one. George Voss said my highly modified BD has been clocked over 100MPH. Actually, it was one of my standard BD's (the same as MAD Aircraft now sells) that was clocked at over 100. My modified BD is faster. :) Here is a pic of the one George saw zipping about at the Arizona Slopefest. http://www.scalesoaring.com/BD-5J1.jpg Thanks, Dave Wenzlick Mesa AZ It's a rocket! Re: [RCSE] Channels 6,7,8 from 555 RX
Interesting web page. What is really interesting is it is an exact cut and paste of my original web page from Slickraft except that they deleted any reference that I am the author and photographer. Isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery? Dave Wenzlick Mesa AZ http://www.scalesoaring.com/slickraft2_5a.htm The following page shows how to convert the channel 5 port into a channel 6 port on the old Hitec 535 RX: http://www.northlandflyer.com/Tips__n__Techniques/slickraft2_5a/body_slickra ft2_5a.htm I just did the same modification to a 555 RX and it works! The modification allows using the 555 on a 4ch HLG, with a radio which wants left aileron to be on channel 6 (like the RD-6000 for instance). [RCSE] F5J Electric contest
As an FYI, The club that hosts the Southwest Classic glider contest in Phoenix every year is adding a different event to our schedule this October. The First F5J Electric Soaring World Championships This October 26-28 2001 the Central Arizona Soaring League will be presenting a contest which we hope will become the first of many events like it. It will be an electric, climb and glide, man-on-man, thermal duration type event with three electric powered classes. We are using the nomenclature of F5J since this is what we eventually hope it will become if FAI incorporates it down the road. There is no recognized F5J class at this time. We are blending the F3J format, with electric powered gliders. No tow men or loose stakes needed here. Many of the rules are similar to F3J, but adapted to electric powered sailplanes. To be fair to all, we are not accepting entries postmarked before May 1, 2001. We can only accept 90 entries total (30 entries per class) and a pilot can only enter 2 of the 3 classes because of the quick turnaround between classes. Entries, rules, classes, schedules, etc. may be found at the web site below. We will be flying multiple rounds over 3 days with Sunday being reserved for the fly-offs of the top ten pilots in each class. The event will be at the same Schnepf Farms Campground where we hold the Southwest Classic in February. Plenty of room and beautiful facilities. The event is being sponsored by CASL, Sailplane and Electric Magazine and Aero-Model Inc. and feature have many vendor booths, a big raffle on Sunday, BBQ dinner Saturday night and more. Re: [RCSE] Redundant Batteries
I have a drawing on my web site for a simple dual battery set up. It's what I have used exclusively in my scale ships for about 5 years now. No complaints yet. I do use 5 cells which helps adjust for the slight voltage drop across the diode. Note the comments on the site about diode choices. There are even simpler setups (dual batteries/dual switches/no diodes) but they loose the advantage of isolating a shorted cell or wiring in one of the packs. http://www.users.qwest.net/~slickraft/slickraft2_4a.htm Dave W. Doug Turner wrote: My Tragi has lots and lots of room in the nose so I was wondering if there is a way to have two battery packs on board, one as the primary and one as a backup should the primary fail. I know the scale glider people use a redundant setup like this but I have not done it before. I figure I might as well make good use of the space since I have the room and need the weight in the nose. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Scale Retracts
FWIW. Some pictures and text of when I installed a retract in a Graupner Discus 2b. http://www.users.qwest.net/~slickraft/asmd2_1.htm * Multiplex sells a retract unit that I believe is designed to fit the ASH26 and is reasonably priced. Is this a quality unit, or would it be better to look for a Hock retract or similar brand? Multiplex unit is fine. I also like the retracts sold by Icare and Hobby Club. http://www2.jonction.net/~icare/scale_acces.htm http://www.hobbyclub.com/framespage.htm * How are these units attached internally to the fiberglass airframe to provide rigidity and support without adding alot of extra weight? I used shoe goo and similar flexible glues like PFM or Liquid Welder. Where possible I have tied it in to the main spar for support. * What about cutting out the wheel doors from the fuselage? How are they hinged to the fuselage in order to open and close properly with the actuation of the retract, and does this require a seperate linkage? See my photos on the above link. I prefer the small nylon hinges to any other method I have tried. I use very small springs or rubber bands to close the doors. * Will a typical retract assembly require a special retract servo or will a standard size servo suffice? I prefer a 180 degree dedicated retract servo. * Are there any "How To" books, online articles or websites detailing installation of retracts in scale fiberglass sailplanes? I think John Derstine's site might have some info also. http://www.Geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/5739/ Dave Wenzlick Mesa AZ RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. The overall scores are at: http://www.users.qwest.net/~slickraft/swc2001.2.htm I will try to post a full review with some pics by Wednesday. It's Monday night and I just got in from doing the remaining paperwork and picking up my last load of equipment from Schnepf Farms. For those who don't know, this site is not an R/C field normally. CASL has to rent the facilities for the four days we are on site and truck in everything on Thursday and get it all back to our regular club field on Sunday night. It's quite a feat for the CASL crew but we are getting pretty good at it. Planes Flown: I made up a form to list the planes flown but we were pretty busy and never quite got to it. If pilots want to email me privately with the info I will compile the list of planes flown and add it to the upcoming results page. Got to get some rest. Re: [RCSE] Servo?
Gosh, I bet Pat never even thought of that! :) There are plenty of situations out there that require an internally reversed servo. As you get into flying more complicated ships you soon discover that it's not a question of the TX shortcomings. It's more a matter of say, "How can I drive 14 servos with an 8 channel TX." You have to be creative. Sometimes, internally reversing the servos can solve the problem. HS-85: Swap the motor wires, swap the outer feedback pot wires. Never been in a 241, but if the motor is soldered to the circuit board it gets a little tricky. [RCSE] Southwest Classic Saturday night at the races
A few more details on the F3B fund raiser planned for Saturday night after day one of the Southwest Classic. (Feb 3-4) The night fly Speed 400 pylon races will start between 6:30 -7:00PM Saturday evening after the dinner. The type of plane which will be accepted for this event is basically, any foam, bouncable, non-threatening, single motor, speed 400, 8 cell max battery powered plane. Merrill or myself will be the final authority on what is allowable. The event is to be very similar to the Visalia Zagi 400 races. The purpose of this event is to raise money for the F3B team and have some fun and relax. We already have a few prizes lined up for the top finishers. Tim Cone has agreed to light the pylon turns with his Night-Ops system. Sign ups will take place on Friday and Saturday at MM Glider Tech booth. NO advance sign ups will be taken. Merrill plans to have a shake down qualifier on Friday night to test the course layout and pylon lighting. I will be selling lots of little cyalume sticks of various sizes and colors to anyone who needs extra navigation lighting on their racer. [RCSE] NO it's not really a Trileron on the Escape
Do you know what the addr of Dave Wenzlicks web site is? Thanks, --Bill My web page about how I set up the 8U Super to fly the six servo wing Escape is at: http://www.users.uswest.net/~slickraft/escape.htm I have been very careful NOT to call the outer aileron a trileron but none the less it is confusing. A Trileron (Robertson Trileron) is a triangular shaped wingtip extension of the existing aileron on the wing. It is driven by the existing aileron and servo so it is actually two surfaces driven by one servo. The six servo wing of the Escape has 2 flaps and 4 ailerons all driven independently by it's own servo. I have been calling the outer aileron for what it is. The outer aileron. The middle one I call the inner aileron. Here is what a Trileron looks like and how to build them into your wing. http://www.users.uswest.net/~slickraft/tritext.htm Dave Wenzlick Mesa AZ RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Futaba FP 8UAFS
This is one of the nice upgrades the 8U super has over the old 8U. The old 8U can be used with a 5 channel RX (like the 555) by being creative and activating ch 5 as a flap and then slaving it to follow the aileron that isn't there (CH 6 or ch-7) On the new 8U super you can go into the PARA function and it will allow you to move the output of the 2nd aileron to ch-5. So in either Flaperon mode or Differential mode the output for the 2nd aileron gets moved to ch-5. This allows you to easily use a 5 ch RX in a 2 aileron servo plane. Dave Wenzlick Mesa AZ I haven't actually tried this yet, but the 8UAFS will let you select a different channel that you want to be the flap channel for exactly this purpose. [RCSE] ISR PSS Festival at Cajon Summit
What can I say? After four days of turn and burn slope flying over in California, Steve Willcox and I were ready to head home to Phoenix. There are very few times when we leave a hill while the wind is still blowing and it's daylight. The ISR gang treated everyone to a fantastic weekend of slope flying and fun. On Friday we went to Parker and flew both sides of the hill with other pilots joining us. I got my first true taste of dynamic soaring using a Bandit. (as Dave Reese says "Welcome to the dark side.") Steve Willcox was DS'ing a micro BD-5J. Doug Turner was stressing a Multiplex Lucky on the backside at about 107 mph. Dave Reese was hitting the DS groove at around 134 mph with his Brisk. We flew almost until dark and then headed back to Apple Valley to get some sleep. On Saturday, we arrived at Cajon early and the wind was already coming up. By ten or so it was 15 mph and it only got better through the day. Steve got to fly his 19 lb. Galsair III so you know the wind was good. Quite a few planes were flying with ballast on board. The awards were beautifully laser etched in wood. The raffle was chock full of kits and radio sets and the food was fantastic. (Thank you so much ISR ladies.) The event was well planned with all the pilot information etc. pre bagged to expedite the sign-in. The event shirts were very nice. Those ISR guys know how to detail a warbird and a T-shirt. Sunday gave us even more wind. By 9:00 we were adding ballast. We watched seven warbirds flying half pipes in unison hitting speeds of about 80-85 mph at the bottom of the pipe. As for other speeds, yes we were measuring them dropping down out of thermals heading for the slope. Brian Laird had a slope scale warbird at 115 mph, Steve Patton's TA-152 at 107, Steve Willcox's micro BD at 100, my micro BD at 98. Of course the micro BD's hold then record for highest MPH per ounce of flying weight. (Gotta' revive that other "Foamie over 100 mph" thread going on RCSE.) On Monday we headed for Parker again and had 10 mph winds when we arrived at 9:00. We DS'd the BD's some more and also flew our Vindicators with a pound of ballast. As the winds got stronger we tended to hang out under pat Bowman's canopy and watch the other local guys rip it up on the front and back side. We passed the radar gun around to anyone who wanted to clock someone and we had a blast. Joe Wurts came up and wasted a carbon wing spar doing some DS laps but saved the plane. Steve and I had to leave early (7 hour drive back to Phoenix) so I don't know the final outcome of the speeds at Parker. I left the radar with Dave Reese with the hopes of hearing about some new highs. Pat Bowman's Sonic and Doug Turner's wing were very impressive on the backside. I toasted my Vindicator late in the day after doing quite a bit of DS with it. (Okay, a little too much DS) Lucky for me I have a spare fuselage and that is really the only thing that will not be easily repaired. Doug Turner lost his Lucky to some kind of radio or switch failure. There were many foamie mid airs and ground assaults but most went back in the air after a quick control check. Steve and I left for Phoenix around 4 pm but I am sure the flying went on until dark. Any reports from those who stayed at Parker until the end of the day? So thanks again to the Inland Slope Rebels for the great weekend and hospitality. Thanks to Joe Wurts and Dave Reese for the DS pointers. We'll certainly be back next year, but probably sooner. Also, if you are interested, I worked out programming the Futaba 8U Super for the Escape six servo wing. I have the info posted at: http://www.users.uswest.net/~slickraft/escape.htm Each wing has a flap, an inner aileron and an outer aileron. During different phases of the flight you can couple and uncouple the inner and outer aileron while cambering in thermals etc. The programming gives you all the normal glider setups like launch, reflex, butterfly and full span camber changing. [RCSE] FVK Graphite for sale
I have a nearly new, competition ready, FVK Graphite for sale. It is completely ready to fly including servos, receiver and 5 cell battery pack. It has a 3 piece wing and the V-tails unplug separately so it packs into a smaller case than most open class ships. You can see it at the F3J contest in Costa Mesa, CA this weekend. While retaining the option of using the standard factory push-pull rods to the V-tails, I installed a kevlar corded, ball-bearing raced, pull-pull system on the V-tails which helped drop the all up weight down to 59 oz. This is a serious F3J or USA TD type ship capable of (and demonstrating) 100 pt landings. It can take full pedal zooms and two man tows. It has a custom made removable nose skeg as well as a plug-in removable TE skeg so it can be used for either type competition. Also, the entire factory installed ballast tube system has been retained. Ballast slugs are included in the price and can be added in 3 oz. increments. You will not have a problem staying an extra night early at Schnepf Farms. There are still about 3 RV spots with full hookups open, out of the 24 available. The tent(no hookup) camping area next to the 60 acre flying field is huge if for some reason the RV spots fill up. Both sites have full use of the restrooms and showers. Re: [RCSE] SWC2000, Bethlehem and the Emperor
just to attend what is looking to be a really memorable event. In spite of the frequency issue, he's getting maybe the third best HLG turnout of this nation's season. Every single HLG club contest in SoCal has at least one, and often more, frequency conflicts but we wouldn't dream of sending people away because of the complications arising from frequency management. As far as sheer numbers go, nobody likes the idea of cutting task windows or rounds, but it's the less evil of the options presented. I don't think it's evil to have to limit entries in order to run a quality event. Ask Ron Schark what he's gonna do about the IHLGF this year. He's expecting a huge jump in attendance, but I guarantee you he won't be telling Werner Stark to stay on the other side of the ocean because Derek insists on getting in another ladder task on Sunday. We are having a HL event on Friday to celebrate the fun of flying HL gliders. This is not nor was it ever meant to be a IHLGF. Ask the Soaring Exchange. I'm a competitor and I know I would rather fly one less round than to have possibly formidable competition turned away. We have had the opposite input from past contests. Fliers have commented they appreciate the flying time. Ask Daryl if he'd be willing to fly one less task or give up a lunch break or go a little longer on Sunday to have the chance to beat 230 instead of 160. We have dropped and shortened rounds twice in the last two years. We don't take a lunch break. It would be nice to rest and eat but we don't have the time to stop flying during the day. As for flying longer on Sunday, I don't feel it's fair to ask our volunteers be hauling all the equipment off the field by car headlights late Sunday night. Ask Joe how he likes the idea of turning away competition. We don't like it either but it is not a decision we just came up with arbitrarily. Ask Sal or Karlton which number they'd rather have attend. Of course huge events are cool and prestigious but at what cost? Yep, some of us are the fodder, but we're the guys who pay the dues, spread the word and boost the LSF points for the rest of the warriors. I don't consider anyone who goes to the trouble of joining us at our event "fodder". (I am bothered by the fact that you think it doesn't upset me to have to turn fliers away.) The biggest thing is that missing out on the SWC will dramatically reduce my motivation to attend the other Triad events. It's not about flying in my first TD contest, it's about flying in THE triad. Without getting to the SWC, Pasadena and Visalia just become "big contests." I can't imagine Visalia or Pasadena ever becoming just another "big contest". Those events stand on their own as long time traditional classics. Twenty bucks says if you allow Ray to open up the Old Buzzard's contest to three pilots per channel you'll grab an additional twenty guys (making it nearly the numeric equal of the International) and who knows how many you'll add to the SWC? We're not looking to hold an IHLGF and we must have some time for fliers to practice on Friday. Remember, many of them will not have even had a plane in the air for months! I knew limiting the HL event to one per freq. would limit the entries. That seemed to be a safe and fair way to not have the HL events take up the whole day. Can't you guys ask for more winches, more volunteer help, better software, or something to help increase throughput so as not to turn people away? More winches are not the answer. We have 85 club members, most of which are working both days. The software is not a problem either. When I find myself between a rock and a hard place like the one every CD faces when they must make decisions like this, I have to ask myself, "What Would Elvis Do?" Well, I asked Elvis and he hasn't replied back yet. And now I'll hide behind that very rock so the flames don't burn too badly. None of the above responses should be considered flames. I calmly and rationally tried to explain and defend our reasons for the way we run the events. I wish we didn't have to limit the entries but we do. Please come along and join in. At these large contests you don't have to be entered to have a good time. Ask some others on this list. It's a fun weekend. [RCSE] More thanks for a great time in California
This time I'm posting about the awesome day Hank Caple and I had when we visited the Inland Slope Rebels on Sunday on our way home from the ISSA aerotow event in Apple Valley. After contacting ISR club members on Saturday night and with Santa Anna winds predicted we met the gang up at and incredible site named Lake Hills in Riverside CA. I had seen this site before but never got to fly it because the winds were from the wrong direction. On Sunday the winds were at least 30 mph gusting to 45-50 at times. We witnessed some of the most incredible slope flying I have seen. Screaming passes down into the valley and seconds later 500-600' overhead. Lead and more lead was the plan of the day. I don't know the final weight some of the ships were flying at but those guys were putting the lead in by the pounds. Hank flew a Silhouette stuffed with lead and I flew a T-33 and my little EPP BD-5J loaded nearly 3 times it's dry weight at 20 oz. The highlight of the day for me was to be able to ballast up my DG 600 and really push it to the limit. It took three people to hold onto it at the edge of the slope until Hank gave the command to send it out into the blue. It was a wonderful flight and after a while everyone else landed (probably to watch my wings blow off!) and then I had the whole place to myself for the remainder of the flight. When it came time to land I was willing to accept some damage from landing a scale ship in those kind of winds but Carl Maas rounded up the ISR gang and they spread out in the landing zone and I hovered the DG in without a scratch right into Carl's hands. What else could one ask for? After a short break we all went back out and ripped around some more. Except for all the grit in my eyes and ears from the winds it was a day to remember for us ISR wannabees. Thanks for the hospitality ISR. See you on the slope another day. Re: [RCSE] Visalia Vendors?
I will be doing Chronus and Sportline switch replacements on site. I will also have some micro BD-5J kits for sale. Ask for me at the Aero-Model Distribution booth.
