As a professional pilot who has watched people build and buy homes closer and closer to airports that have been there for many tens of years, and some a hell of a lot longer than that, I question their intelligence, education and common sense. Airports are and always will be good for the community, especially from a financial perspective! And those that are home to military squadrons play an even more important role! Most airports generate more steady-state revenue for the local community than people ever seem to realize. And why is it that when people have to travel somewhere and choose to go by airline, the average joe traveling public seems to always be complaining about how much of a pain it is to get to the airport because it's so far away, etc. Everyone seems to want an airport nearby when it serves their personal purposes, but are quick to condemn them if an airplane flies overhead. And those that complain about ticket prices on airlines have no clue what it costs to operate an airplane or airline. Airlines RARELY make much if any profit at all. Most operate in the red! Airlines operate on such thin margins that few people in their right mind would ever invest in one! The incredible lack of understanding and general ignorance of what's involved in supporting and operating aircraft is not just limited to the general public, but sadly also includes those that actually work in the industry (It's all I can do to keep from blowing up when I listen on a discrete frequency to some airline pilots complaining about their contracts, pay and benefit packages as we cruise along at 40,000' over the Atlantic or Pacific routes sometimes). It's really a sad thing. *sigh* okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. Sorry to all for my little rant off-topic... BUT before I go... how can anyone not be turned on by the sound of 50,000 pound thrust G.E. or Pratt and Whitney engines in afterburner, even if it IS at O-dark thirty in the morning? You can view the results at: http://www.rmsadenver.com/scores/2005/0503/0503.htm We had a lighter than normal turnout since it was a rescheduled event due to snow the previous weekend and spring break weekend was here, but we had a great contest anyway. Since there were only 10 pilots we flew groups of 5 with the other 5 pilots as timers. There was a choice of strategy for line retrieving since there were not enough pilots to also fetch the lines. Some pilots chose to send their callers/timers down the line during the preptime to hurry back with the lines after the launch. Others chose to keep the timers near them until they were established - then send them down to get the lines in case of a relite... The conditions were quite challenging. We had a strong overcast with ocassional showers moving thru. There were periods of great lift and also much sink. Some rounds were won with 4 or 5 minute times. In accordance with F3J rules we allowed 1 throwout and in the end Skip Miller won 1.5 points ahead of me... There were some great flights in tough conditions. We all had a great time and really enjoy the format. The repair service that Futaba uses works very well. One of the transmitters I sent in was an 8UA system that some aftermarket user had modified to put the three position switch on the left. Guys do this all the time. I have not done this but it is possible to physically move the switch to the other side and perhaps modify the wiring harness so it reaches the new position. I'm a little hazy on what is involved since I have not done that operation myself. Perhaps a better idea is to send the transmitter to the Futaba service center and ask to have it changed over to switch mode 1. If you go with the do-it-youself method then you will have a problem if you ever want to send the transmitter in for any sort of repair work. The first thing they will insist on doing is to return the transmitter to factory standard condition before doing any other work. They won't mind putting the transmitter into factory standard condition as a switch mode one transmitter but you will have to get that done before any other factory service work can be done on the transmitter, so you might want to consider getting that conversion done from the beginning rather than attempting some non standard modification yourself first. I have been impressed with the service they have offered and it did not seem expensive either. They will fix every little thing on the transmitter that you send them including the replacement of broken switches, etc. It will be just like a new transmitter when they are done. Here is a link to the service center; http://www.futaba-rc.com/service.html You just fill out and print a repair order and send that in with the transmitter. For an extra $35.00 they will give you a two day turnaround time also. The Zenith has a HQW 3.5/8. The HQW part is the author, in this case Helmut Quabeck. The 3.5 is the percent camber, and the 8 is the percent thickness. In general, the greater the camber, the more lift but at a price of more drag. Where you really see it is in windy conditions or when you are trying to go fast. Trying to make the best of both worlds, the designers have set up the airfoils so you can change the trailing edge of the wing (reflex or camber) hence changing the airfoil. A reflexed airfoil is going to scoot across the sky better, but not have as much lift. Some of the differences between airfoils are so small that only as a more experienced pilot will you notice a difference. There are other factors like the wing planform (shape) that also come into play. So...the MH32 has less camber than the HQW 3.5/8 which in turn has less than the 7037. That's probably the order you would put them in general terms if you are talking about drag and lift. Your final sentence sums it all up. If you practice 3 times a week (lucky man) it won't really matter what foil your plane has. A good pilot can make a number of foils work, it just comes down to preference and flying style. This is Greek to me. I don't have aerodynamics degree but it seems pretty important for what your airplane can do and can do in a contest environment...yes, I will have practice at least three times a week. RE: [RCSE] Looking for a comparison between the Eraser Xtreme and Sharon
So how come he brought three of them and has been flying with one type of plane longer than I fly any one type of plane? Maybe he is trying to horde those Sharon's I be thinking -Original Message-From: Mike Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 11:36 AMTo: Mike Remus; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; soaring@airage.comCc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: [RCSE] Looking for a comparison between the Eraser Xtreme and SharonOK, now for a differing and contradictory opinion...I have flown many many gliders over my 27+ years of model soaring. When I had the opportunity to fly a Sharon, I took it. When I had the opportunity to buy that Sharon 3.7 Pro - X tail, I jumped at it. It is my one and only thermal duration, or F3J contest bird. It floats in light lift better than almost any other glider. It will, and I have hand launched this "cow" and climbed out in tight little thermals. It is not a "Cow". It is nimble, and has great legs. It covers ground with the best of them and again better than most. As for landing...it is a very good landing machine. Just ask the guys that flew in last years Unlimited class at the Nats. It did not let me down. Of course I was only flying for 2nd place until Josh had his bad luck. But still, within 12" from the nail 90% of the time is not the results one would expect from a "Cow".Keep in mind, I am not sponsored or paid to say any of this. I am a true believer in the Sharon Pro 3.7 Cross Tail. All of the above applies if you have set the airplane up correctly. It is a big glider. If the set-up is not right, it could be difficult to fly correctly. And for the record, if you haven't figured this out by now, I disagree totally with the Rabbit...Of course, he could just be trying to keep you from getting oneI bet he has two or three back-up Sharons in the briar patch with him ;^)Happy flyingMikeAt 05:44 PM 3/5/2005, Mike Remus wrote: I am on my third Sharon Pro 3.7. I'd assume that the Eraser would be better at working light or tight lift, but what about relative flight speeds or climbing ability in lift? How strong is the Eraser Xtreme wing? (I know the F3B wing is basically bulletproof...love my Eraser) Will the RG-15 Sharon wing slow down nicely in lift like the Eraser's MH-32 will? He's finding that his d-box NYX doesn't match his flying style, and is looking for something else. I'm pushing him towards an Eraser of some description since I've been flying them for 5 years faithfully, but don't have any direct experience with anything other than the F3B version. Anyone have a NIB or like-new Sharon or Eraser Xtreme (or F3J) that they want to sell? Would have to be in perfect shape, no repaired models please. [RCSE] How do you...?
Ya'll I was flying today (Aquila Grande) when I probably shouldn't have been in 20 mph gust. We used a winch and she kited on me before I knew it and hit the ground on the nose and cart wheeled to the wing. The only damage I have found thus far is my outer panel snapped at the dihedral and threw my spoiler out of that wing. My problem is a night at the work bench but the real question is how do I remove the 5/8 steel rod in the fuse as it was bent on both sides during the launch? The rod is 9 long 3 is into each wing. RE: [RCSE] How do you...?
Everyone thank you all for your help. I knew there was a few construction experts. The one thing I found in common is cut it. I cut it and I got a new one on the way .They are only $5 - $10. It will take a couple of days before I fly her anyway. Although Harvey I like your idea the best but that last comment probably would have led me to cutting it anyway. Problem solved except for pilot decision making skills. :-) -Original Message- From: Harley Michaelis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 7:54 PM To: Don Lisa Copley Cc: soaring@airage.com Subject: Re: [RCSE] How do you...? Don, get a couple of pieces of metal plumbing pipe the rod ends will fit into for leverage. If possible, first rotate the rod so the bent ends point to the tail, put the nose in your belly and simultaneously bend the rods back. You should be able to straighten it enough to get it out, but will likely need a new rod. Otherwise, saw it off one bent end so you can pull it out the other side. - Original Message - From: Don Lisa Copley [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.com Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 4:33 PM Subject: [RCSE] How do you...? [RCSE] When the ribs are smaller
I am working on the Gambler + . There is a building discussion that is over 970 threads long. To find this answer is difficult. In the wing the ribs are smaller than the TE that comes with the kit. Do I align the ribs to the top of the TE or the bottom. After I do I am suppose to sand the TE to match the ribs. Which works better without screwing the airfoil? [RCSE] What R You flying?
Daryl, What are you flying these days in most any given weather situation that works either by adding ballast or removing ballast for TD/F3J's events? I got an R/C buddy and I are looking at moldies frankly we've given ourselves a migraine. It seems we started a Ford vs. Chevy discussion in the R/C discussions. We don't really want to fly what everyone else is using in the club. We want to get into the contest for TD F3J and wiling to put the time in. Just to be apart of the gang isn't't our game. We know the airplane we get we need to know it like we know our wives in order to be competitive. We've heard Pike's, Sharon's, NYX's, Artimus', etc. It's like the Chinese alphabet for airplanes...Thoughts? Suggestions? Finally, when I plunk down $1000 on a ship. I can't go to my wife in 3 months and say Opps got the wrong airplane.
