The Orion has the upside down engine.. The Amp on the T-56 is mounted on
the top of the engine and has the words NO STEP stamped on it. If you
look up in the main wheel well of the Orion (inboard Engines). You can see
this Amp facing down with the words NO STEP stamped on it. Kind of odd

No, no, no...They're upside down on the Herc! Actually the motors
are in the same orientation. The gearbox is mounted high on one and low on
the other. You guys can guess which one is high and low.

That's why we call those big four-bladed things 'fans'--when they quit
turning the crew starts sweating. Unless they are in an Orion and then
they
intentionally shut a couple of them off before they drop down to skim the

Since when? As a professional pilot who has watched people build
and
buy
homes closer and closer to airports that have been there for many
 tens
of
years, and some a hell of a lot longer than that, I question their
intelligence, education and common sense. Airports are and always
will
be
good for the community, especially from a financial perspective!
And
those that are home to military squadrons play an even more
important
role! Most airports generate more steady-state revenue for the
local
community than people ever seem to realize. And why is it that when
people have to travel somewhere and choose to go by airline, the
average
joe traveling public seems to always be complaining about how much
of
a
pain it is to get to the airport because it's so far away, etc.
Everyone
seems to want an airport nearby when it serves their personal
purposes,
but are quick to condemn them if an airplane flies overhead. And
those
that complain about ticket prices on airlines have no clue what it
costs
to operate an airplane or airline. Airlines RARELY make much if any
profit
at all. Most operate in the red! Airlines operate on such thin
margins
that few people in their right mind would ever invest in one! The
incredible lack of understanding and general ignorance of what's
involved
in supporting and operating aircraft is not just limited to the
general
public, but sadly also includes those that actually work in the
industry
(It's all I can do to keep from blowing up when I listen on a
 discrete
frequency to some airline pilots complaining about their contracts,
pay
and benefit packages as we cruise along at 40,000' over the Atlantic
or
Pacific routes sometimes). It's really a sad thing.

*sigh* okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. Sorry to all for my
little
  rant off-topic...

BUT before I go... how can anyone not be turned on by the sound
  of
50,000 pound thrust G.E. or Pratt and Whitney engines in
afterburner,
even
if it IS at O-dark thirty in the morning?

It's quite simple. Weight divided by area. (Number of ounces divided by
number of square feet.)

Let's say you have 325 sq in of wing area and your plane weights 28 oz.
There is 144 sq inches in a square foot, so that means you have 2.257 sq
ft of area. (325/144).

Now divide 28 oz by 2.257 and you have your wing loading in oz per
square foot. (12.4 oz/ft).

They can't put it in inches, it depends on the span of the aircraft. They
use percent so that it can be applicable to all aircraft with that foil. So
you may want to send out a follow up post with the span of your aircraft.

Some of you requested the results from our F3J with winches contest. You
can
view the results at: http://www.rmsadenver.com/scores/2005/0503/0503.htm

We had a lighter than normal turnout since it was a rescheduled event due to
snow the previous weekend and spring break weekend was here, but we had a
great
contest anyway. Since there were only 10 pilots we flew groups of 5 with
the
other 5 pilots as timers. There was a choice of strategy for line
retrieving
since there were not enough pilots to also fetch the lines. Some pilots
chose
to send their callers/timers down the line during the preptime to hurry back
with the lines after the launch. Others chose to keep the timers near them
until they were established - then send them down to get the lines in case
of a
relite... The conditions were quite challenging. We had a strong overcast
with ocassional showers moving thru. There were periods of great lift and
also
much sink. Some rounds were won with 4 or 5 minute times. In accordance with
F3J
rules we allowed 1 throwout and in the end Skip Miller won 1.5 points ahead
of
me...

There were some great flights in tough conditions. We all had a great time
and
really enjoy the format.

For those that want to know the planes:
Skip Miller - Pike Superior
Jim Monaco - Icon
Mike Verzuh - Pike Superior
Don Ingram - Tsunami
Bob Lewan - Pike Superior
Lenny Keer - Pike Superior
Danny Williams - Icon
Bob Moffett - Stratos?
Jim Barr - AVA

As a matter of fact I just sent two of my Futaba 8U transmitters in for
servicing today. The repair service that Futaba uses works very well. One of
the transmitters I sent in was an 8UA system that some aftermarket user had
modified to put the three position switch on the left. Guys do this all the
time. I have not done this but it is possible to physically move the switch
to the other side and perhaps modify the wiring harness so it reaches the
new position. I'm a little hazy on what is involved since I have not done
that operation myself.

Perhaps a better idea is to send the transmitter to the Futaba service
center and ask to have it changed over to switch mode 1. If you go with
the do-it-youself method then you will have a problem if you ever want to
send the transmitter in for any sort of repair work. The first thing they
will insist on doing is to return the transmitter to factory standard
condition before doing any other work. They won't mind putting the
transmitter into factory standard condition as a switch mode one
transmitter but you will have to get that done before any other factory
service work can be done on the transmitter, so you might want to consider
getting that conversion done from the beginning rather than attempting some
non standard modification yourself first.

I have been impressed with the service they have offered and it did not seem
expensive either. They will fix every little thing on the transmitter that
you send them including the replacement of broken switches, etc. It will be
just like a new transmitter when they are done.

Here is a link to the service center;

http://www.futaba-rc.com/service.html

You just fill out and print a repair order and send that in with the
transmitter. For an extra $35.00 they will give you a two day turnaround
time also.

Phil

I would not be so worried about the skegs and teeth mounted to someones
plane, but more the 4 pounds of aircraft moving towards me at a high rate of
speed if they're not!!

I was out flying my old Camano the other day and it has a skeg mounted on
it, and I asked myself why... When I drop those big flaps down to 90% and
both ailerons go up it almost stops inflight, but keeps coming right up to
the tape at a slow walk.

Skegs and Teeth? Maybe the rules should say you have to use them during a
contest to keep the landing area safe for others.

osmium at about 22.6 grams/cc. Most anything heavier than tungsten is mind
bogglingly expensive (only Icon pilots could even consider it) or toxic or
both.

It say's it's 30% heavier then lead.

Lead is about 11.3 grams/cc. (Steel is about 7.8 grams/cc and aluminum
around 2.7 grams/cc, titanium comes in at 4.5 grams/cc and tin at 7.3
grams/cc.) There are heavier metals than lead but I doubt if many are
cheaper.

Bill

[RCSE] Airfoil question

2005-03-08 Thread Don Lisa Copley
Over the past week we have gone from Artemis to Zenith's in what to fly
discussion category.

It's boiled down to two things:
1.) it's a tool use it...practice, practice practice
2.) ...and airfoil

What is the difference between (Zenith etc.) MH-32 and (Sharon Pro) SD 7037
which turn into a RG15. This is Greek to me. I don't have aerodynamics
degree but it seems pretty important for what your airplane can do and can
do in a contest environment...yes, I will have practice at least three times
a week.

RE: [RCSE] Airfoil question

2005-03-08 Thread Don Lisa Copley

John.
So it turns into a Chevy Ford fiasco again? I have some top fliers
commenting on the Sharon. They must feel it when they fly to different
airfoils like you said. So the foil with less camber is easier to change the
TE flight characteristics and the plane with more camber is harder?

Thanks for the education,
Don

Subject: Re: [RCSE] Airfoil question

Don,

A lot of the airfoils will reference numbers that have to do with 2 things:
Camber and Thickness. The Zenith has a HQW 3.5/8. The HQW part is the
author, in this case Helmut Quabeck. The 3.5 is the percent camber, and the
8 is the percent thickness.

In general, the greater the camber, the more lift but at a price of more
drag. Where you really see it is in windy conditions or when you are trying
to go fast. Trying to make the best of both worlds, the designers have set
up the airfoils so you can change the trailing edge of the wing (reflex or
camber) hence changing the airfoil. A reflexed airfoil is going to scoot
across the sky better, but not have as much lift.

Some of the differences between airfoils are so small that only as a more
experienced pilot will you notice a difference. There are other factors
like the wing planform (shape) that also come into play. So...the MH32 has
less camber than the HQW 3.5/8 which in turn has less than the 7037. That's
probably the order you would put them in general terms if you are talking
about drag and lift.

Your final sentence sums it all up. If you practice 3 times a week (lucky
man) it won't really matter what foil your plane has. A good pilot can make
a number of foils work, it just comes down to preference and flying style.

When I had the opportunity to buy that Sharon 3.7 Pro - X tail, I jumped at

It floats in light lift better than almost any other glider. It will,

[RCSE] How do you...?

Ya'll
I was flying today (Aquila Grande) when I probably shouldn't have been in 20
mph gust. We used a winch and she kited on me before I knew it and hit the
ground on the nose and cart wheeled to the wing. The only damage I have
found thus far is my outer panel snapped at the dihedral and threw my
spoiler out of that wing. My problem is a night at the work bench but the
real question is how do I remove the 5/8 steel rod in the fuse as it was
bent on both sides during the launch? The rod is 9 long 3 is into each
wing.

Thanks,

Everyone thank you all for your help. I knew there was a few construction
experts. The one thing I found in common is cut it. I cut it and I got a new
one on the way .They are only $5 - $10. It will take a couple of days before
I fly her anyway. Although Harvey I like your idea the best but that last
comment probably would have led me to cutting it anyway.

Problem solved except for pilot decision making skills. :-)

Don, get a couple of pieces of metal plumbing pipe the rod ends will fit
into for leverage. If possible, first rotate the rod so the bent ends point
to the tail, put the nose in your belly and simultaneously bend the rods
back. You should be able to straighten it enough to get it out, but will
likely need a new rod. Otherwise, saw it off one bent end so you can pull it
out the other side.

ribs. Which works better without screwing the airfoil?

2005-02-27 Thread Don Lisa Copley
Daryl,
What are you flying these days in most any given weather situation that
works either by adding ballast or removing ballast for TD/F3J's events?

I got an R/C buddy and I are looking at moldies frankly we've given
ourselves a migraine. It seems we started a Ford vs. Chevy discussion in
the R/C discussions. We don't really want to fly what everyone else is using
in the club. We want to get into the contest for TD F3J and wiling to put
the time in. Just to be apart of the gang isn't't our game. We know the
airplane we get we need to know it like we know our wives in order to be
competitive.

We've heard Pike's, Sharon's, NYX's, Artimus', etc. It's like the Chinese
alphabet for airplanes...Thoughts? Suggestions?

Finally, when I plunk down $1000 on a ship. I can't go to my wife in 3
months and say Opps got the wrong airplane.
