Re: [RCSE] Another reason not to Fly 2.4 GHz

2008-08-01 Thread George
As a CD I appreciate the SS pilots. It makes it a lot easier to set up the
rounds when the frequencies of the pilot's chosen timer, or vs. versa, is no
longer an issue. The Ham radio pilots have rarely caused a problem when trying
to separate the pilot and timer.

I am sure this is just one of those things that can happen when New
technologies are quickly accepted and infrastructure has just not reacted
quickly enough to keep pace. What I am speaking about is the lack of
accommodation to Spread Spectrum contestants and their timers at Soaring
Competitions. As I am sure you know back in the old 72 MHz days if you wanted
to have your own caller timer at a contest you just entered on the same
frequency so that you would be available to help each other. This was the
method in particular used at the Nats and the Masters. Because of the lack of
identification of a unique SS frequency the SS guys are just piled in to the
Matrix. This has caused some major headaches at the Nats where contestants have
been held up waiting for Timers. My suggestion to those clubs that are having
Contests with called flight order is to accept SS entries and either ask for
team affiliation or Timer, Helper particulars. I am thinking you could identify
SS flight groups as say SS1 SS2 SS3 and use the same 3-4 contetstants as is
now offered to 72 MHz contestants. I believe that this will be fairer and help
the contest run smoother. Larry

[RCSE] Fresno Soaring Society good news

2008-08-01 Thread George
About a year ago I said that FSS was threatened with our flying site
becoming a golf course. Our field is located in a county park, we have used
our flying site since 1994. The county held 3 public workshops on purposed
uses of the park which included our field. Our members attended the public
workshops and spoke against the golf course. The majority of the public
attending the meetings are against the golf course and indicated they wanted
open space. I am confident we will be able to continue the use of our field
as the county decided to drop the golf course. We probably will have to
share the field with others but should be able to work out some
arrangements.

Re: [RCSE] Organic Servos

2008-06-10 Thread George Joy
Phil and all,
I decided to use an Airtronics 761 for the flap, yes did have to trim
away some of the rib. I'm going with HS-85,s for the rest of the setup as
they are the smallest servos with ball bearings I have available. I want
good holding power for the launches. :-)
Thanks for all the input.
BTW:
I just returned from the IHLGF in Poway, and all I can say is
WOWOWOWOW!
This year was the best fly-off show I have ever seen, even better than the
ones I participatedin, Many years ago :-(
I hurt my back the day I left for the event, so had to have someone
throw for me, And need to thank everyone, yes even Paul, (it wasn't his
fault the fuse broke!) for allowing me to enjoy the event.
Especially Dave Leedom who graciously provided me with a plane to
finish the contest with. Then proceded to have a midair with me (Both his
planes involved) He completed the round and I had to have him help me
repair and get it back in the air the next round,
TPG had a lot of new faces and they carried on the great tradition of
fun and a well run event. My hats off to everyone who participated in that
effort.
Thanks again

On my new Organic I'm using Hitec 81's all the way around except for the

I think these may be overkill but you really can't beat the price or
speed. I think George
Kennedy recommends the JR 241's or an alike. These have about 17 oz. of
torque compared
to the Hitec's 30. However, all that said, I think holding power and
centering are the two
most important requirements over torque.

You'll love your Organic.

Re: [RCSE] Servo question

2007-12-31 Thread George
I have two 94091Z servos for spoilers on a RES ship. After a short period
of time one stopped working. After I removed it from the wing it appeared
that the servo overheated and melted the housing, it had shrunk in one area.
I replaced it with another 94091Z and it has worked for several months
without any failures.

Hey guys,

Quick question for those of you servo experts. I fly solely Airtronics
equip - servos, radios, receivers... I don't pay attention to any other
manufacturers products. My Stalker utilizes a 6 servo wing. 761's are
good for the flaps, but for the 4 ailerons, 761's are overkill. I can
use them, and they'll fit, but I don't want to carry the extra weight.
Airtronics has a 94091Z Super Microlite Servo. The torque ratings are
fine for my purpose. Does anyone have experience with these? Centering?
Gear train? Etc??? What other servo from any other manufacturer in this
size and weight might you guys recommend and why?

For reference:
Weight: 0.32 ounces
Size:0.91 x 0.44 x 0.87
Torque (6V): 23 In oz.
Speed 60deg (6V): 0.10

Re: [RCSE] Solenoids

The failures were on 2 different winches. All winches are Tim McCann
winches, all have Cole Hersee solenoids. The only difference is one winch
has a Ford 6V motor, the other has an Injoy 6V motor (not the new ones). We
run with 12v batteries. We have replaced the solenoids with the same Cole
Hersee part number. All have worked. When you are launching a full house
Unlimited sailplane you would lug the motor down so we know this is not the
case. I'm not knocking Cole Hersee solenoids, before these 2 incidences we
have not had a single failure.

[RCSE] Solenoid Failure

2007-12-13 Thread George
Our club has 3 winches and I have 2. All have double Cole Hersee solenoids.
All the failures have occurred in the last 4 that we have purchased in the
last year. So far all the replacement solenoids have functioned properly.
I'm wondering if there is a quality control problem.

I'm surprised at that many failures over that short period of time.
Something ain't right somewhere. I've never seen a failure of a cole
hersee solonoid with years of service on my winch. I'm sure you have
already, but I would check all the wiring and connections real
carefully.

[RCSE] Solenoid Failure

2007-12-10 Thread George
In less then year I have experienced the failure of 3 winch solenoids. They
are Cole Hersee solenoids. The first failure was with brand new ones. On
the first day of use both solenoids failed at essentially the same time,
they both stayed closed. A cutoff switch saved the sailplane. After the
failure I installed Cal Posthuma's Solenoid LEDs. The second failure was
last Saturday, it was only the second day the solenoids were used. One of
the solenoids stayed open. Cal's solenoid setup's buzzer sounded and the
LED for that solenoid stayed on. We jerry rigged a bypass for the bad
solenoid and were able to fly.

I am a firm believer of Cal's solenoid setup.

[RCSE] 2M planes for sale

2006-11-02 Thread George Voss
Title: 2M planes for sale

Don't wait until 3 weeks before the Nats to pick up an excellent flying 2M plane. Buy them now and have time to trim them to your satisfaction before the Nats!

The first is an excellent condition Super V 2M. Includes 6 JR servos, 341's for the tail and I'm told 341's for the ailerons and 351MG servos for the flaps. I will only pull the nice looking tape covers off of the wing if it's a show stopper. The only thing that keeps this plane from being like new is a couple of repaired cracks on the bottom of the V-tail. The wings were made by Fred Sage and are in excellent condition. The fuse is also in excellent condition and it has a molded in nose skeg. I was told the plane weighs in right at 40 ounces and can be ballasted by changing the aluminum wing rod included with a steel one that the new owner can supply. $425 + shipping

Next is a combination plane. The wings are double taper Super V wings again made by Fred Sage. The fuse is an NSP Laser 2M fuse and a set of built-up stabs. The wings have Hitec HS80 size servos in them (I'm not sure whether they are 80's, 81 or 85's) and the flap servos have metal gears. The servos aren't permanently installed and the wiring needs to be completed. The fuse is brand new, never touched and the stabs are built-up and covered in Monokote. There is some building obviously needed to complete this plane. $375 + shipping

Next is one of my favorite 2M planes, the Saturn 2M. This is a wood over foam plane covered with Ultracote. This plane is in great condition considering they haven't been built for over 10 years. No servos are included. These planes were the hot ticket in the 80' and early 90's. The wingrod is a piece of aluminum tubing 3/4 in diameter! This plane will take a hard winch launch without hesitation. $150 + shipping

Finally, I have a Falcon 600. The wings are in good condition but the fuse has had several repairs. No radio is included. This would make a great little slope plane or an intro into full house planes. It's too heavy for serious contest work, but for fun or slope, it's great. $150.

I'll get some photos NLT this weekend.

2006-10-22 Thread George Meyers
Our club had a fly fly/annual picnic yesterday. We had installed dual
solenoids on our winches and one of the winches failed with almost
disastrous results. Both solenoids shorted out at the same time. The only
thing that saved us was our cutoff switch. I always thought the odds of
both solenoids failing at the time was very high, it's not, this was the
first time we used the winch. We used Cole Hersee 24059 solenoids. I
communicated with Tim McCann and will replace the solenoids with the Cole
Hersee 24037 solenoids he recommends. Tim says that the 24059s are rated at
84 amps while the 24037 is rated at 750 amps.

Brent,

We are thinking of two classes, one for
wings, other for conventional planes. We are looking at guys settling on a one
design down the road, but not too fussy about plane specs in the beginning, It
always gets down to the pilot anyhow. As mentioned, we have a member with a cnc
machine who just knocked out 5 of them.We hope to have a caravan to Wilson for the 07 event.
I also have an I-26 and a leFish. Who knows which will be fastest? We have been
getting 25- 30 mph winds fairly regularly in last several weeks! 12-18 is more
the norm. For light wind maybe we will go to DHL stuff.

Just got a spud launcher to knock planes
down from TALL trees near the rotor. My Foameron is stuck about 150 feet up in
one of them.

As it stands we get 8-10 guys our for a
combat day without even trying. We even get Jim Carleton away from his
retailstore to fly! I have been to Dayton
meets where the draw was about the same, and that was for sanctioned events!!

The key has been to not make it too
formal sounding as we run our fun fly contests.

[RCSE] Winch Parts

2006-09-26 Thread George Voss
Title: Winch Parts

This looks like a good start for someone wanting to build a winch. Even if you didnt get the motor, the spool w/brake and line guide arm are worth $100 and he MAY ship those. A good FLS motor will run you $50-100 depending on the type of wind and location you live in.

[RCSE] Good Condition Jaro Mueller Escape For Sale

2006-09-26 Thread George Voss
Title: Good Condition Jaro Mueller Escape For Sale

Up for grabs is a good condition Jaro Mueller Escape. It's got the 6 servo wing but it's currently set up for 4 servos with Volz servos in the wings. The V-tail is actuated by 2 HS85's.

The plane has some repairs on the wings and fuse. The wing repairs were/are not structural. All repairs make the plane plenty strong but they aren't faired in very well. This plane would make a good entry into the molded category or as a good back up plane or slope racer.

$600 without servos

$780 with servos.

RE: [RCSE] Wing Building Techniques: Foam Laminated vs. Built up Pro's and Cons?

2006-09-24 Thread George Voss

IMHO, Vacuum bagging would be the way to go.
You can cut and prep the cores one day and bag the second day. There is
probably as much work in a foam wing as there is in a built up wing, but it
should come out more accurately (accurately is said with some trepidation, see
UICU results on airfoil testing). You dont need to paint the mylar,
just wax them and they are ready to bag. Color if desired can be handled
with colored cloth.

Wing Building Techniques: Foam Laminated vs Built up Pro's and Cons?

Gang,

I know the usual answer is it depends but which is the better build
method?

Here are the considerations...

1. Time (I want to build as quick as possible)
2. Accuracy of the build. I can cut foam wings and I can cut ribs
by hand. I can also outsource these functions to have the performed by
computers.
3. Durability. Which will generally take longer to wear out?
4. Easy of building. I have the bags, pumps, epoxy, ca, balsa
etc... to build either.
5. Prototype? Which is the prefered method to prototype
ships. This would mean really quick, almost disposeable building so that
a basic feel of the plane can be gained. I can see covering a foam wing
with tape or building a ribbed wing with fewer ribs and full balsa sheeting.
6. Any other considerations you may have.

This will be my first official building season, and I plan on building several
60 inch planes from DLG, to mini hotliners. I purposely didn't ask about
spars as I think the same spar can be used in either construction method.

Thanks.

Jay

RE: [RCSE] World Soaring Masters: Finals are FINAL

2006-09-24 Thread George Voss
Ben, Thanks for taking the time to inform those of us that are 'home bound'
this weekend. Looking at the scores and considering the talented flyers in
the top 10, the scores seem very unusual. The 10th place flyers score is
only 67% of the winners score. This is a very low percentage in my opinion.
Even the 5th place finishers score is seems low at ~84% of the winner's
score especially considering they are flying MOM. There is over 6 1/2
minutes worth of points separating the first and second place winner.

Don't take these comments as darts to the finishers, they are not.
Personally, I think the Soaring Masters is a great idea and is flown
utilizing a great format. Thanks to all of the sponsors for their support
and to all of the modelers who were able to come to Muncie, fly their best
and put RC soaring on the map as a Major Modeling Venue.

As for the purse, it is a great idea and I'm sure the pilots appreciate a
cash return. However, the money returned in no way can cover what most of
us have invested in this hobby (can I get an up in here from the Icon
flyers? :-)) I'd gather Mike Smith will have spent upwards of $1500 for the
trip to Muncie from SoCal, not counting the investment in planes, support
equipment etc.

Again, Congrats to all who were able to attend, Ben Wilson for keeping the
rest of us informed from round-to-round and to rest of the 78 pilots who
were there for the top 10 to beat. If it wasn't for them, it really
wouldn't be much of a championship.

I'd like to see a 2M event similar to the Masters. I know there is a
love/hate for 2M planes among our group. A very good Midwest pilot once
told me he flew a 2M only for a year. He said if you can fly a 2M against
an unlimited plane and win consistently, you'll do better when flying your
unlimited plane...he would know as he finished in the top 20 of the Masters.

[RCSE] Epoxy odors

2006-08-25 Thread George Voss
I'm no chemical expert, but I'm pretty sure the catalyst is acidic and
that's probably what you smell. All epoxies will have some odor to them. I
would recommend doing it in the garage or workshop next time to keep the
smell out of the house.

I haven't done any building in a while and am I am installing the radio in a

new ship.

I had to mix up a tiny batch of generic 30 minute epoxy that the local hobby

shop sells so I could install the servo tray. You could smell that tiny bit

of epoxy throughout my two story house. The smell wasn't overwhelming but
you could still smell it.

Is there an odorless epoxy on the market I can use for servo mounts and
other similar applications/ I'm not talking about glassing wings or
building a fuse, just simple installation jobs where a small amount of epoxy

is needed.

Subject: [RCSE] Epoxy Odors

Sorry to disagree with you George, but you're wrong. Almost all epoxy
systems consist of two parts. One is the epoxy resin, the clear, gooey,
essentially odorless component. This piece contains epoxide linkages at
each end of each moledule which are just waiting for something to interact
with them. The other part, the catalyst, is a diamine, which is a
compound with a reactive functional group at each end of each molecule.
This is the component that stinks, and will turn yellow with age. Since it
is a diamine, it will interact with water (you can wash the catalyst
container, and yourself with soap and water, unlike the resin). The diamine
is also a sensitizer to both the skin and lungs, and the reason some people
develop allergic reactions to epoxy systems.

Here is a little test you can do yourself. Take a few drops of the catalyst
and place it in a few mL of water. It will disolve. If you try the same
thing with the epoxy resin, it will just sit there. The resin requires an
organic solvent (like isopropyl alcohol or acetone) to disolve, while the
catalyst has both water soluble and organic soluble regions.

The strong odor emanating from the epoxy system that started this thread
suggests that the diamine catalyst is old, or has broken down somewhat.
This tells me that the cured epoxy matrix that will result will not be as
strong as if the components were fresh, since the chain lengths of the
polymer (yes, that is what epoxy is) will be more varied than if the fresh
components had polymerized.

Hope this helps.

This week at the AMA site will be the US F3B Team Selections.

I would like to thank in advance all volunteers that make this possible.
If you can volunteer and haven't talked to Jack Iafret or Marc Gellart
there's still time.

For those that haven't seen F3B, you are missing something.
The TD part you know... 10minutes (always) 1 meter /per 5 point landing
without skegs.

The Distance is the most fun part in my opinion. Distance is like racing
and yahting. Know when to go slow and when to go fast.
When its fast well its loads of fun

Speed, is just that... FAST... 4 legs with ballast and fast turns.
Smooth, short, and fast wins. Times for the 600 meters can range from
14-23 seconds... It all depends on the air.

So if you can make it you are sure to see some cool stuff going on. I am
hoping that some of you get hooked enough to want to try it sometime...
We need more fliers if we are too compete on a world class level.

If you can help, and watch even better. If you can't volunteer, I hope
you can make it too watch... Unlike TD this IS a spectator sport since
distance and speed have something to watch...

Learning to FLY F3B WILL MAKE YOU A BETTER PILOT...

See ya all there... And thanks again volunteers.

Re: [RCSE] Great Ideas

2006-08-15 Thread George Meyers
I've heard of contests where the ruling was if the canopy came loose and was
still attached by a string or other device, you had to be willing to launch
the sailplane that way or take a zero for the landing.

I then Goop the LED display to the inside of the canopy. A side benefit
is that

technically, even if the canopy departs the aircraft on launch/landing it
remains tethered, thus allowing you to score on that round.

I have a number of planes for sale that will be available after Soar Utah. There is no way I can get them out until after that event.

NSP Laser 3M. Excellent condition, RTF with quality Airtronics 141 servos. $450

F3X Cobra. Some repaired damage on the wing and fuse, but a new fuse is included. Wing damage was cosmetic only. This would make a great slope racer or practice F3B plane. $500,

Fischer V-Ultra. Some repaired damage on the wing and fuse. Wing damage was cosmetic only. This would make a great slope racer or practice F3B plane. $500,

Escape w/electric fuse. Some repaired damage on one wing, cosmetic only. This can easily be set up for a thermal plane with some simple mods to the nose. $500

The Cobra, V-Ultra and the Escape all sold for $1000-1200 new.

Ive got photos of the damaged and repaired areas. Several of the planes currently have servos in them but the prices DO NOT include servos. The V-Ultra has Futaba MGs, the Cobra has MPX digital, and I dont remember what are in the Escape. I think they are Volz.

[RCSE] 2-Meters thoughts

2006-08-01 Thread George Voss
A prominent Midwest sailplane flyer contested a 2M only for a full year. He
flew it in 2M (obviously) and in unlimited. His words to me were something
like this: If you can win with a 2M, you can wing with anything, (meaning
and unlimited plane since he doesn't fly DLG.)

I'd have to agree with him. 2M's just don't have the performance an
unlimited plane has and if you can fly a 2M to its maximum, an unlimited
plane is just that much easier.

The DLG guys will say the same thing. If you can thermal out with a 60
model, anything larger is easier. Of course that's not true in all cases,
but I'm sure I can get an amen from those who have flown DLG when I say if
you can thermal out from a 50' launch, a 600' launch is like a 'gimme'.

I can't remember the gentlemen's last name (his first name is Lee) and he
had kept record of his flights for a year. The 2M times were statistically
lower overall than the unlimited times. The chart was published in RCSD
many years ago.

As far as contests go, I think most people will build a plane to compete in
the events that are scheduled. For example, I attend MWSC every year and I
didn't have a foamy warbird for that particular class. I'm building one now
for next years event. If we have 2M events as part of a 2-3 day contest,
people will bring 2M and fly in the event instead of sitting around while
everyone else is flying.

Maybe we don't want to spend as much on a 2M as an unlimited plane, but good
flying 2M can certainly be had for less than $500, not counting the radio
and many are less than $250 used.

I for one would like to see 2M continue. Unfortunately it now has to
compete with DLG, RES and Nostalgia. It's up to contest directors to keep
2M going.

[RCSE] Numbered drill bit question

2006-07-24 Thread George Voss
All pins that I know of are .0625 or 1/16 diameter. You can get a .059
drill bit. I think it's a #47. This will give you .005 undersize. This
works perfect if you have carbon on FG control horns. They are tough to get
started the first time, but by moving the clevis up and down it will loosen
the hole fit a little. If you spend 3 minutes doing this, you'll have an
almost perfect fit. Once it starts getting loose, which takes about a year
of flying, you can put the thin CA on like the others mentioned. The
control horns I sell have a .059 hole in them. gv

Not a bad day for Team Polecat ;)

1. Mike Smith
2. Bruce Davidson
3. Shane Spickler
4. Doug Pike
5. Doug Harnisch

The weather produced some really tough air, which combined with Ed
Franz' difficult tasks (two 3's and a 4, two 4's and a 2, 3x3) made for
some serious shake-ups in the scores all day long. An excellent
contest, despite my sad placing :)

RE: [RCSE] Brrrr that's cold

2006-07-06 Thread George Voss

Due to the extreme heat we suffer, its
imperative we keep our radio systems covered as the heat will play havoc with
the radio equipment. Sometimes we use fabric, or a simple shade. For serious
temperatures though we need to cover the entire fuselage so the control rods
dont expand. This is a typical example of how we keep the control
system cool in the blazing heat.

sent me an email with the instructions and after reading them, I still had
nothing...until I realized that this unit requires a separate battery, i.e.
it didn't have a BEC circuit!

Long story short, I connected the ESC/motor to the RX, plugged in a motor
battery, plugged in an RX battery and the beeps started happening! Now
everything is fine. I had disconnected the external BEC for the initial
tests and the motor is fine. I then hooked up the BEC again and everything
works. I'm a happy camper now.

Thanks everyone for your comments. gv

RE: [RCSE] Problems with GE Silicone II

2006-06-22 Thread George Voss
There is a silicone made specifically for electrical components.
Unfortunately, it's hard to find and expensive for a small amount. RS used
to carry it but no longer does. If the silicone has an acidic smell, i.e.
it smells like vinegar, it will cause corrosion in electrical applications.
I'd guess that's what happened to your servo. The electrical grade silicone
doesn't smell like vinegar.

Like Jeff mentions, it's going to be tough to remove it from the surface. I
recommend epoxy-ing the servos to a piece of balsa and then epoxy the balsa
to the fuselage. That way you have a release film. Some people wrap the
servo in masking tape and then epoxy the servo in place. I've done that too
in certain situations. gv

The servos work but I get nothing out of the motor or ESC. The motor has 5 pin female plug coming out of it which I'm pretty sure is for sensors, but this is a sensorless control so nothing is hooked up to it.

Any ideas why my throttle doesn't work?

RE: [RCSE] Supra ? Mine weighs 61.75 oz prior to balance. How does this compare with yours?

2006-05-19 Thread George Voss
This proves several things. Any or all of the following could apply.

First is Gordy's rule of weights: Everyone else's plane weighs less than
yours no matter how light yours is. If you build a Supra RTF at 40 ounces,
somebody will have a lighter one!

Then: Stan is a lousy builder.

Next: Maurice is a great builder.

Next: Maurice used lighter equipment than Stan.

Next: Maurice has the CG at the back of the wing ala DP.

Next: Stan has the CG at the front of the wing.

Next: Stan's scale weighs heavy.

Next: Maurice's scale weighs light.

Next: Stan's plane has more carbon, paint or epoxy in it so it's slightly
heavier.

Next: I've heard 61-65 ounces depending on servo choice. Let's face it; if
you use sub micros at 6 grams or you use micro digitals at nearly an ounce a
piece, you'll end up with different weights.

Next: 99% of us couldn't tell the difference between the way a 61 ounce
plane and a 65 ounce plane flies. 4 ounces out of 60 is only .07%. That's
nothing for the majority of us. Most of us can't tell the difference in how
a plane flies unless we change the loading by 2 ounces per square foot,
which equates to about 20 ounces. On a light plane like an AVA, we might
notice a difference in the way the plane flies at 1 ounce per square foot
increased loading, or an additional 10 ounces.

Next: None of this really matters at 1000' and 20 minutes!

Just my humble opinion of course. Personally, I think you've done fine
Stan!

with a Foodsaver

Greetings:

I am about to apply skins to my Alcyone 3M, and I want to reinforce the
wings with carbon fiber. What's better: carbon tow or carbon mat?
Will the thickness of the carbon fiber be a problem under the balsa skins?
How wide a strip should I apply?
What's the best way to apply the carbon for the best adherence to both the
core and the skin? Should I apply epoxy to the core where the carbon will
be, lay in the carbon and then apply the skins? Should I apply the carbon
to the skins first and then to the cores?
I have considered applying a wide strip of carbon between the leading edge
of the core the trailing edge of the spar (on both upper and lower
surfaces), all along the main wing panel from the root to the junction with
the tip panels. Is that too much CF? I'd like to make the wings as strong
as I can to avoid folding them on launch.

Has anyone tried vacuum bagging small parts, like stabs, in a Foodsaver? It
occurs to me that the Foodsaver might work well, provided it can produce
enough pressure.

Cheers!

ADVICE NEEDED: Lightest electric 2m with landing control?

Ok,

I am looking for the litest weight glider with landing control in the two meter
class.

I want to build it, from plans, I want it to be simple and quick.

Power will be 3s1p 2100, at around 400 watts (probably a mega direct drive), I
want vertical performance to 300 feet.

The wing must be multiple pieces.

I would like AUW to be 30oz or less, and should be able to penetrate wind.

Any thoughts...

Jay

I like the bagging idea only because it then becomes your sailplane and no one else's. There is a pride that goes with building/bagging your own, especially in the 2M size. If you have some small issues with the bagging like pin holes or whatever, it's not that big deal.

OK, Im suddenly in the market for a 2M ship for the 2 contests a year

it will see action I can not bring myself to spend more that about

200 bucks, so that limits me.

What are your thoughts on Ed Whyte's Cara? DJA's updated 2M Chrysalis?

The 2M Bird?

I throw the 'Bird in there after going to Muncie yesterday - that seemed

to be the club ship. Downside to that is that I'd really rather build

the 100 version, don't really want multiples.

Any other choices? Are Ducks much out of that range? Plan B is

bagging wings for an Allegro fuse, seems more like a longer term plan.

Thanks,

Brent

Dubro makes long arms to fit Airtronics, JR, Hitec and MPX servos. They are
on a tree and come with about 8 different arms if I remember correctly. gv

I need a arm at least 3/4 inch from center to end. Anyone know where
I can get one.

[RCSE] 3110 Motor

2006-04-21 Thread George L Meyers
I just learned the meaning of the saying that if I didn't have bad luck I
wouldn't have any at all. I mounted the 3110 motor in my winch frame and
ran it so I could sand the shaft like you would in a lathe. I had to sand
the entire length of the shaft. The end by the brushes was harder as I had
to remove the armature and be very careful. I finally got it all done.
When I tried to mount the Real Balls to the motor, the bolts will not go
thru the slots in the heat sink. Now I have to go buy new bolts. I'm
stubborn enough to keep at it until it's done.

RE: [RCSE] Initial CG on a scratch ship...

2006-04-20 Thread George Voss
Title: Initial CG on a scratch ship...

You need to find the MAC or Mean
Aerodynamic Chord, which is the average chord. Assuming a straight leading
edge and a tapered TE, if its a straight taper , measure the root, add
the tip and divide by 2. That is the average chord. So, make a mark
8 back from the LE and thats the average chord. 30% of 8
is 2.4, just like you calculated. Id start there.

If the TE has more than one taper, you
will need to take into that into account.

Just
trying to get a rough idea where to start here, what formula you might use to
come up with a starting CG. Picture a 200 inch wing, root chord about 11
inches, tip about 5, straight leading edge, tapering TE.

Modern
airfoil, HQ 2.5, 12 - 10 percent thick. My thought was to go
mid span, take some percentage of the chord there, then mark the root that far
back - example: 30% of 8 becomes 2.4 inches - mark the root at 2.4
inches from the leading edge.

2
questions - how far off is that logic, how far off is
30%?

I'm
towing this ship for the first flight, so I'd like to be pretty close, erring
to the nose heavy side.

Thanks!

RE: [RCSE] Robbe Infinity 2 charger repair

2006-04-20 Thread George Voss

I opened the charger
today, removed the plastic dust cover and disassembled the button. There is
a metal circular disk under the cover and its concave. The click
you hear is the disk compressing and returning to its neutral position. I
had to reshape the disk since Id bent a portion of the edge. Once
reshaped, I sprayed some contact cleaner/lube from RS ($10), reassembled the
button and it works fine. Instead of removing the dust cover on the
remaining buttons I simple sprayed a tiny amount of cleaner/lube in each button.
All is well now.

Thanks RCSE!

George,

 My buttons went south a
few years ago and I tried to find someone without any luck. I also tried
to find replacement buttons with the same results. With nothing to lose,
I opened up the contacts, wiped them with contact cleaner and glued the
covers back on again. Voila! It's been working for two years since
then. I'd hate to lose it as it seems to work much better than my
Triton.
